President’s Message

Welcome to the 2019-2020 Rotary year – let’s connect the world! (But … as I tell my two boys; “yup, let’s go!”) There have been many exciting Rotary experiences over the last year-and-a-half after being nominated that I don’t know how to squeeze anything else into the mix … but I’ll certainly try! “Congratulations” and a huge “thank you” to President Al. He has done an outstanding job from the podium, added new Rotarians along the way, and expertly managed our Board. Expanding on President Maureen’s initiative of a Club executive group that would provide continuity between service years, Al has challenged our group to expand membership ideas, create and tell our story, as well as, have some fun along the way! I’ve appreciated his mentorship and it’s been an honor to serve with him…thanks, Al!

What? No side-salads!? Where’s the bread?!? From one business professional to another, we have a strict op-erating budget and take our expenses seriously. We’ve evaluated various budget line items over the past two years and will continue to adjust as labor, service contracts, and corresponding Rotary International and District dues rise. In order to maintain the highest value for your membership, and keep the outstanding service that Pardini’s Catering performs every week, we’ve adjusted some of our lunch items. Check it out for a while and then tell us what you think. Additionally, adjusting some of the food items will help with excess food waste that we pay for only to see end up in the trash upon clean-up. Our operating expenses are pivotal and we will continue to address additional cost-saving items in the future to maximize your membership. If you have ANY QUESTIONS, please don’t hesitate to ask our A++ Treasurer, Mr. Dick Herrinton. He is always available to discuss our financial health. What’s in store for YOUR 2019-2020 Rotary year? My dedicated fellow Rotarians, we were established in 1916 as Club #203 out of 36,000 today and one of the Top 50 Clubs worldwide in membership size. THIS IS THE PLACE TO NETWORK, HAVE LUNCH, AND SEE AN OUTSTANDING PRESENTER EVERY MONDAY! (don’t think of it as a meeting…those can be boring!) We will celebrate our success every week as we provide; (1) value for YOUR membership, (2) consistency in amazing presenters, (3) continue to tell our story to the greater Fresno Community, (4) increase and target our support for specific youth programs that promote impact and sustainability, (5) increase your knowledge and participation within the Five Avenues of Service, AND, (6) pick up a few GREAT NEW Rotarians as fellow business professionals that see what we see in service, and networking. It’s been an educational and mentoring journey over the past year-and-a-half (so many thank yous!) and I look forward to the next 2019-2020 journey as we continue in Rotary service.

Last Month’s Meeting Recap—Like Us on Facebook & Instagram for photos!

June 3: SPORTS DAY! Thank you to everyone who participated to help make this a great day for Rotarians.

June 10: Jim Boren, Executive Director for the Fresno State Institute for Media & Public Trust, gave insightful tips for sifting through "fake news" stories that are passed easily through social media. From his early days as a beat writer with the Fresno Bee, Boren started the Institute at Fresno State in 2018 with a goal to offer solutions to arm people with facts. He encouraged all to first look beyond the personal biases that tend to blind a logical assessment. When questioning the validity of a news article, Boren asked to first check the source of the news item. If you have not heard of the source, continue to question. Boren stated that a simple web search of the source can go a long way to disprove an article. If you want to go further, deepen your web search to other news agencies to see how that story is being promoted (if at all) and the tone used for the story from other outlets. Boren implored all to check the actual link in your browser before clicking on that Facebook post because legitimate fake news will try to appear as real as possible. Boren said if it doesn't pass the "smell test," then it's a red flag. Boren also encouraged the use of non-partisan, fact-checking websites like factcheck.org or snopes.com as well as researching the author of any story you feel is suspect. According to Boren the most important tool anyone has is their critical thinking ability. Boren said, "don't assume it's true, check it out and confirm the facts."

Ringers: Bill Stewart (2) was excited to share some stories from his 26-day cruise that carried him from Ft. Lauderdale to Russia; and Gil Nye (2) rang as a proud papa to celebrate his sons' recent graduations.

June 17: Mark Arax, local author and journalist, shared stories that he uncovered while working on his new book, "The Dreamt Land" that describes the history of agriculture and the needed water flow in California. Arax began by describing the mad-ness of the 1,000-mile chunk of earth with all of its agricultural variety and rainfall that varies by 100 inches depending on the locale called California. Arax posed a few questions for consideration: Where does the water go? Why does the water go there? By what right does the water flow in that direction? Inspired by his grandfather's journey to the Valley from Paris, France in 1920, Arax described the beginnings of hydraulic irrigation when early industrialists transitioned from mining gold to growing crops. Even though the rivers were captured early, the real explosion took place through fruits, vegetables and nuts that were given water through hydraulic irrigation. The water system that was the greatest the world had ever seen is now a bone of contention between the North, South and Center of the State as they war over their water needs. Today’s families struggle to farm their land because a neighboring farmer dug a deeper well. Arax concluded his time one final question and remark: What is the future of water in California? New regulations, dramatic changes and havoc.

Ringers: Dick Herrinton (2) got things started when he rang the bell to celebrate his wedding anniversary; Scott Barton (2) tout-ed the new dinosaur exhibit and the healthy baby rhino at the zoo; Todd Sheller (2) was back from the Rotary Interna-

tional Convention in Hamburg, Germany where he took a side trip to visit Normandy Beach and the D-Day Memorial; John Baerg (5) had a great father’s day with his grandkids and has found success after merging with another CPA business.

June 24: This day was jam packed with Miss California contestants and magician, Kyle Elder, who had the gift of entertainment (and the ability to blow minds) with levitating tables and misplaced wedding rings found in gumball machines.

Ringers: Ev Norcross (10) had his family in attendance as he sang his Rotary swan song before their big relocation to Texas. Ev rang for each member of his family, the glue of Rotary (Anna Pine and Dick Herrinton), Al Smith surviving his year as president and Jack Lamborn and all the back-table cronies. The Rotary Club of Fresno won’t be the same

without you, Ev!
