During the 15th week of Rotary

Year 2019 – 2020, Club members,

along with our guest, Mark Wetstein

(Julia’s husband), took part in a contest

cooked up by our own Christine Cope.

She presented us with clues about

various musicians who were born in

October, and we had to guess the name

of each artist. Those individuals who

got the right answers were entered into

a drawing to win none other than two

tickets to our upcoming Fall Festival!

And the winner was. . . Don Powers!

If you’d like to try your hand at

Christine’s musical trivia, here are the clues (and the answers are

down below – no peeking!):

1. You may say he’s a dreamer.

2. He won’t back down.

3. He wrote a little diddy; pink houses; large cat

4. He made the sky cry.

5. He’s groovy and can tell you how to leave your lover.

6. He’s a little bit of a stalker.

7. He’s a little bit of a joker, gangster, and cowboy and can

fly as high as an eagle.

Answer Key: (1. John Lennon; 2. Tom Petty; 3. John Cougar

Mellencamp; 4. Stevie Ray Vaughn; 5. Paul Simon; 6. Sting;

and 7. Steve Miller)

WARREN ROTARY’S PARTNERSHIP WITH ASA SOCIAL FUND FOR HIDDEN PEOPLES & BRIGHT KIDS UGANDA

Three years ago, a filmmaker shared a documentary about gender

crime in Uganda involving acid attacks. Compelled by our hearts and

consciences to do something, The Rotary Club of Warren partnered with

Pauline and Lou Picard of the University of Pittsburgh, who provided advise

on how our dollars could make the most impact. The end result was a joint

project focusing on ending poverty through microloans provided to survivors,

enabling them to start small enterprises and support themselves and their

children.

On October 9th, Victoria Nalongo Namusisi, Founder and Director of

Bright Kids Uganda and Chairperson of The Blessed Survivors, along with

Pauline and Lou Picard from the University of Pittsbugh and the ASA Social

Fund for Hidden Peoples visited our Club. Victoria extended greetings from

the survivors and also indicated that she was celebrating the 57th

Independence Day of her country. Victoria always tells her people that

“you cannot have political independence without economic independence”. In

that regard, she was also celebrating $5,000 presented to her that day

by our Club to further sponsor the economic independence of the survivors

in Uganda. This support enables them to lead better lives, provide for

their children’s education, and put food on their plates. She also

expressed

appreciation for

previous funds which

supported purchase

of a van used to

transport those

needing medical

care to and from

the the hospital.

Victoria has been involved

in so many projects that make a

positive difference in Uganda.

In December of 2015, she was

taking a boy home to Northern

Uganda. Conditions were very

hard in his village where more

than 500 people were killed

during the war in 2004. She

started “Adopt-A-Village”,

collecting blankets and clothing

for the village’s people, and offering small microloans and training on

micro-finance in collaboration with the Picards. However, she noticed

that the women would attempt to sell their commodities but had to run

away during inclement weather. In further support, Victoria raised

money to build three marketplaces where the women could set up their

merchandise and have shelter from the rain.

Dr. Lou Picard also spoke to us about his work with Bright Kids

Uganda and the ASA Social Fund. Dr. Picard is a Professor at the

University of Pittsburgh’s Graduate School of Public and International

Affairs and Division of International Development and African Studies.

The ASA Social Fund for Hidden Peoples provides “financial support

for vulnerable and fragile children and adults who are impacted by

extreme poverty, civil strife, abandonment, gender violence,

disfigurement and physical disabilities. Three years ago, through the

ASA Fund and Rotary donations, a pool of $2,000 was raised to fund

microloans for seven or eight survivors. They became a core group of

individuals who can work with the next generation of survivors. A

strategy was formed to create groups of six members, each of whom

would receive a $150 to $200 loan, with payback being required within 6

months. There was a stipulation that if one member did not pay back

the loan, loans to all members in the group would stop.

Our most recent funds will allow for an $800 loan, including a two-

tiered training system on branding, marketing, and advertising. It is

hoped that six to seven groups will be funded now, and six to seven each

for the following two years. Governed through sound financial

processes, 12% interest will be charged on the concessionary loans.

The Rotary Club of Warren would also like to recognize the Rotary

Club of Cortland and Dr. Patel for partnering with us on this project.

This is definitely what we have been called to do – transferring heart

into action!
