ROTARY CLUB OF LINDSAY #4770 JUNE 28, 2021

June 28, 2021

President Adam called the meeting to order and asked for a toast to Queen and country.

President Adam had opportunity to take his family camping over the weekend. Even though he had to work during the day, and it rained a bit, he did have a story to tell about a baby mosquito. It seems baby mosquito was to take flight and spend it’s first day flying on its own. At the end of the day when the father asked

how the day had progressed, the juvenile responded with, “ It was awesome Dad, everyone was clapping for me!!”.

President Adam anticipates that there will be a dedication of the Dom Fox Memorial canoe/kayak launch installed at the Old Mill Park in Lindsay on July 20th at 1:00 p.m. Watch for updates relative to Covid-19 public gathering regulations.

Our guest, Asst. Dist. Gov. Bruce Gravel reports that although Covid-19 has certainly been a challenge, the Centennial Celebrations of the Peterborough club have been progressing.

A flag raising at city hall in April was attended by Rotary and City officials.

The. Centennial book researched and prepared over the past two years by none other than Bruce gravel and his wife Frances was released June 1st and has been well received. Copies have been presented to Premier Ford and Prime Minister Trudeau. The book

is available for purchase (it’s a fund raiser) at a special price for Rotarians (and the general public) of $50.

ADG Bruce spoke of other centennial projects as well; the Big Shade shelter built last year on Greenway trail at Rotary Park, and this year’s Splash Challenge which is a re-invention of the annual Swimathon which has been a successful fundraiser. It’s possible that Peterborough club President, Wayne Harding is the wettest president in club history. He has taken the Splash Challenge seriously in that he has jumped or been thrown into various bodies of water a dozen times already this year. The club has also presented Kamp Kawartha (also 100 years old) with a suitably large cheque in support of a carbon-neutral medical centre being constructed at the children’s summer camp near Peterborough. There are plans also for a gala dinner to be held in April 2022.

President Adam had a recap of events that our club has experienced over the period of his presidency.

Interesting and rewarding was to go to the local High Schools to present Rotary Bursaries.

Our bi-weekly social meetings were pleasant opportunities to visit and socialize until covid came along.

The Elgin Park Splashpad, initiated during Carol Timlin’s presidency, was completed and opened. Thanks to John Coxon for spearheading the efforts.

A cheque for five thousand dollars was presented to 5 Counties Children’s Centre.

In August of 2019, a well liked and highly respect member, Dom Fox passed away. He did much for our club and our community and we miss him.

Our last Burger Day before Covid was held in partnership with The Spudster.

We sent 2 students to RYLA camp

Our last Shred Day before Covid was held on a rainy and somewhat muddy day. Club members kept smiling and made the day a success.

President Adam and a contingent of Lindsay club members attended the District Conference in Huntsville. The conference is particularly memorable for Sharon Chambers.

Some of the bicycles actually became the single transport vehicle for whole family units.

Events, including a fashion show and a presentation about human trafficking.

Covid changed pretty much everything including Board meetings, and lunch meetings, business in general.

We could not honour student of the month. Conferences were held virtually. Masks 😷 became part of our wardrobe.

President Adam expressed his appreciation for all the help and guidance he has received from members over the past two years. In particular he thanked Past Pres. Carol for her help and support; Lynda Rickard for her IT guidance, fundraising and grant writing; Garry Burns as membership chair; Blair Bailey (the longest serving secretary in our club history) for his knowledge and help; John Bennett for taking care of club financials and the many other facets of club treasurer; Christine Paradoski for expertly handling “New Generations” reliably; Anthony Polito for always getting the job done without fail; John Coxon for being the definition of Rotary, taking on many challenges and always bringing projects to completion without delay; and Charlie Currie for his help and guidance in the pursuit of the return of our charitable status.

President Adam explained that Garry Burns, due to unforeseen circumstance, will not be assuming the role as President at this time. President Adam has graciously stepped in as acting President and will bring us information about Board of Directors and further developments soon.

John Bennett expressed his appreciation for Adam continuing in Garry’s stead and providing continuity.

ADG Bruce expressed congratulations and appreciation to Adam for going an extra mile and providing ‘service above self’.
