Meeting held at Café Elixir 23rd June 2014 President Norm announced that this evening we were farewelling our 2 exchange students Anson from Taiwan and Akin from Turkey. He welcomed all members attending this week and also invited guests, Jacob's Sister Jack-ie, Ian's partner Margaret, Col Hannigan from the Grand Toyota Dealership (His Mother is President of the Inner Wheel in Ireland), Neil Coney and his daughter Elizabeth who is our outbound student heading off to Argentina, Bernice Marwick, District Chair of Inner Wheel A40 Jan Duffy, Penny Norm's wife and Linda Norm's sister and a very special welcome from District 9455 to Trish Lynch District Mentor for Turkey, Asia and the Americas. Rob Thompson from the Rotary Club of Scarborough and his wife Annie and Exchange Student Adele from France and Phil's partner Kerry. Owen's partner Helen. The first speaker for the evening was Akin the young fellow from Turkey and Norm said it has been an absolute pleasure to have him in their home. AS we all know he came with his English very low. Norm asked Ray if we could play Akin's first talk to the club. This was recorded on the ipad and we were able to listen to Akin's very bro-ken English welcome to our club. His speech was very broken with many pauses and we could not fully under-stand what he said and this goes to show what a remarkable effort he has made to master the English language and talk quite fluently. Full credit to him. Akin Kilich: Akin explained how he first encountered Norm trying to talk to him in the car on their way home and that he could not understand anything he was saying and didn't know where he was going so he went to sleep until they got home. The first weekend here was spent at a camp for the exchange students and he didn't under-stand what they were talking about so he slept while others talked. He said that was his worst weekend in Austral-ia. (This highlights the importance of spending time with them and including them in activities to make them feel welcome).

Akin mentioned all of the places that he has been to in Australia, Sydney, he had a lot of fun and New Year’s was a great night with the fire-works, Western Australia up North with Host Father Norm and he said that was his best trip in Australia seeing Geraldton, the Pinnacles, Mon-key Mia, Paraburdoo, Shark Bay and many plac-es. The last trip was to Adelaide with President Norm to watch a Bagpipes Competition and saw how the bagpipes can be played well. He started school at Bullsbrook and then changed to Cyril Jackson for English but found the English test very hard as he had only been there 9 weeks. When a teacher came before the class and said that someone had failed, he felt very upset be-cause he thought it was he that failed but it was another student so he was very relieved.

Akin showed some photos from his graduation day. He went back to Bullsbrook College and he must admit that since going back he swears a lot more. We all had a chuckle at that. As well as learning English he has been busking, surfing, playing guitar and the most important thing that he has done while being in Australia was learning to play bagpipes and played them for ANZAC Day and spoke about the friendship between Turkey and Australia and also was proud for being at the Anzac Day Ser-vice. He expressed his thanks to his host family who have looked after him for the whole year and they did lots of things to make him happy and hope that they can both visit him and his family in Turkey sometime in the future. Also thanks to his other host family Rob and Enid Thompson who looked after him when Norm was away. Big thanks to the Rotary Club of Wanneroo and in particular Norm de Grussa and Tom Drinkwater and again thanks to all members of the club. Thank you for looking after me. A big round of applause from everyone. Tom Drinkwater asked why he didn't play the bagpipes tonight for us but Akin explained that he hadn't been practicing for a while. President Norm said to Akin that it was a great pleasure for Penny and him to have him in their home and nice to have him in the Wanneroo Ro-tary Club and on behalf of the members I would like you to accept this gift. Akin thanked him. His gift was a Dockers Footy shirt.

Raffle: The Raffle was drawn by the 2 Exchange Students 1st Prize: Ray Perkins 2nd Prize: Kerry Cousins Pres Norm announced that we have a nomination in for National Youth Science Forum, a young fellow called Ronan Elders and his application has been forwarded on to District That looks after the National Youth Science Forum Greg Thurston who is dealing with that right now and our next inbound exchange student is Albin Celurud from Sweden who arrives on the 15th July and he is looking forward to coming here. He is a very keen fisherman and is bringing his own rod and reel. Anson Pai: gave his talk to the club. Anson thanked our club to give him the opportunity to come here and he is going to share his years’ experience with us. Why did he come to Australia? Because he wanted to come to a country that was different to Taiwan and to learn Eng-lish and wanted to learn a different culture and the different scenery. After an 8 hour flight he arrived to be greeted by Rotarians to start his exchange year. He really liked this Wanneroo Rotary Club. He was so scared in the first meeting but everyone was very kind and very friendly. That’s why he really likes the club. He was hosted by Norm for the first week and he taught him many Australian Cultures and took him to see some important places and I still remember the first word he taught me was streaker. I still remember on TV. Thank you Norm for taking care of me on the first week. After his first week he went to his second host family Lau-rie and Jan Duffy. Laurie taught him many stories about his family. He taught me lots of responsibility of life from him. Jan is a busy lady and when I have some questions she always can answer me and she is like a good teacher. The first host family is very important to every exchange student to teach you how to catch the bus, enrol him in school, and show him how to do his banking so I just want to say thank you for hosting me in the first 3 months. After the first 3 months I went to my second and present host family Owen and Helen Douglas. Owen is very passionate and funny and he always makes funny jokes and I can't stop laughing and I really like to talk with Owen he is like my friend and Helen is very kind and gentle. She always thinks about me and when I have some problem she al-ways helps me and supports me. I am still living with them and I hope we can continue having good times. People were wondering what Owen was holding in a plastic bag on the screen photo. Anson explained it was a bag of dog shit! Everyone cracked up. I think Owen was about to wet himself.... he was laughing that much. His third host fami-ly was Peter Miskelly, he had a photo of Peter on the screen and he said he doesn't know why but he always took pho-tos of Peters back. Peter said he was always walking too slowly. Peter is a busy ma because he is supporting a big car team and he took him to many speedways to watch the race and he was always happy when the team wins. Thank you Peter for taking him to watch the race even though you are busy. His school is very good and relaxed compared to his school in Taiwan. He made lots of new friends at school and they are very kind and very nice and he will miss them a lot

when he returns home, they are the best Australian friends that no-one can replace. He experienced many, many first times and he was referring to his first trip to Perth, First time for the baby from crawling to walking, the first was Norm's Grandson, the second was Laurie's Grandson and also Owen's Grand Daughter. He saw each baby from crawling to walk-ing and that was very special. First time for a school ball, He said he looked quite smart lol. He mentioned the three most important trips, the Goldfields was a special trip as it wasn't just for fun as we visited many Rotary Clubs around the Goldfields where we said hello and introduced ourselves. The second trip was to Sydney where he saw the Opera House and also saw the fireworks display for New Year’s which was very beautiful. The third trip was the Northwest Safari which was his favourite trip because it was the most expensive. He has a good sense of humor.... It was amazing as they went around WA and went underwater and saw the shark with a glass bottom boat, it was so beautiful, took a lot of pic-tures and met more Exchange Students from the other District. It was very good although we had an accident on the first day where one person went to hospital and many people were sick but we all returned back to Perth safely and we all had a good time. He thanked Rotary and our club again and thanks to the Family of the Wanneroo Rotary Club and thanks to my Mum and Dad. He said his English is improving (I think) and he will never forget this year in his life. He hopes that he will come back to Aus-tralia again to visit you all. Thank You. Owen Douglas said that he was a very like able lad but said tongue in cheek that he can't say he is honest. We all laughed as he was referring to himself not being a great host father. We all know better. Owen said

Page 5: Rotary Wanneroo Bulletin 39 2014

that his English is improving all the time and is a lot better than his Mandarin or Cantonese. Owen presented Anson with his gift from the Rotary Club members which was an Eagles Footy Jumper and said that it has been a fantastic journey for all of us and those that get involved in the Youth Exchange Program from the Directors, Facilitators and Trish to the Host parents in the club. It's a great program and we enjoy doing it and it has been a pleasure hosting you Anson. Akin and Anson were asked to remove their flags from the stand which signifies the end of the hosting period with the club. Vote of Thanks: Mark Douglas presented Akin and Anson with the Clubs Engraved glasses. Mark said to both of them thank you for their great speeches tonight and also mentioned that it must have been hard for them being in a new country and I am sure you will go away with great memories and we do hope that you think of us and what you have learnt when you go back to your own countries. Thank you very much. President Norm mentioned that he had a phone call from Paul Ripen from Germany one of our previous exchange stu-dents and he will be visiting us on Monday night. Sergeants Session: Phil Cousins thanked the members that assisted with the bowel scan program being Bill Kell, Neil Cook, Peter Miskelly and Owen Douglas for a fantastic job they did this year. Everything has been reconciled at this point of time. Raffle Winners paid up, Bill Kell has been going away, and going away, and going away and the B.. is still here. Smithy for holidays, Jacob for missing in action, Kerry for her retirement party, Colin was in credit for good advice on lemon trees, Akin for being nominated beau of the ball, Birthday boy Mark and also for missing meals, Norm for his introduc-tions, Exchange students for leaving their Chilli from the Chili Con Carne. The people whose country didn't make the World Cup received a fine. It was a good fine session after Phil's short break. President Norm acknowledge the District Chair Jan Duffy and the outbound students father Neil Coney and his daugh-ter Elizabeth Coney, Rob and Annie Thompson, Adele from France, Trish the District Mentor for Asia, the Americas and for Turkey. Thank you everyone for coming and we all sang the National Anthem.

GIGGLE’S CORNER ACCIDENTAL BONDING A woman and man get into a car accident. Both of their cars are totally demolished, but amazingly neither one of

them is hurt.

After they crawl out of the wreckage, the woman says, "Wow, look at our cars -- there's nothing left! This must be a

sign from Him that we should be friends and not try to pin the blame on each other."

The man replies, "Oh yes, I agree with you completely."

The woman points to a bottle on the ground and says, "Somehow this bottle of Scotch from my back seat didn't

break. Surely God wants us to drink this Scotch and celebrate our good fortune."

She hands the bottle to the man. The man nods his head in agreement, opens it, and chugs about a third of the

bottle to calm his nerves. The woman takes the bottle, immediately puts the cap back on, and hands it back to the

man.

The man asks, "Aren't you having any?"

The woman replies, "No. I think I'll just wait for the police."

WALKS INTO BAR—THREE TESTS

A new guy in town walks into a bar and notices a large jar filled to the brim with $10 bills. The man approaches the

bartender and asks, "What's up with the jar?"

"Well, you pay $10, and if you pass three tests, then you get all the money."

"What are the three tests?" asks the man

"Gotta pay first."

So the guy gives him the $10 bucks, and the bartender adds it to the jar.

"OK, here's what you have to do. First, you have to drink that whole bottle of pepper tequila -- the WHOLE thing at

once -- and you can't make a face while doing it. Second, there's a pit bull chained up out back with a sore tooth.

You have to remove the tooth with your bare hands. Third, there is a 90-year-old woman upstairs who's never had

an orgasm in her life. You gotta make things right for her."

"Well, I know I've paid my $10 bucks," says the man, "but I'm not an idiot. No wonder you've collected so much

money -- that's impossible!"

The new guy proceeds to drink several whiskeys, and eventually, he gets up his nerve.

"Wherez zat teeqeelah?" he slurs.

He grabs the bottle of pepper tequila with both hands and downs it, gulp by gulp. Tears are streaming down his

cheeks, but he doesn't make a face. Next, he staggers out back. Everyone in the bar hears a huge scuffle outside -

- barking, yelping and growling, then silence.

Just when they think the man must be dead, he staggers back into the bar with his shirt ripped and gashes across

his body.

"NOW," he says, "wherez at ol' lady with the sore tooth?"

FORGET ABOUT IT

An elderly husband and wife visit their doctor when they begin forgetting little things. Their doctor tells them that

many people find it useful to write themselves little notes.

When they get home, the wife says, "Dear, will you please go to the kitchen and get me a dish of ice cream? And

maybe write that down so you won't forget?"

"Nonsense," says the husband, "I can remember a dish of ice cream."

"Well," says the wife, "I'd also like some strawberries and whipped cream on it."

"My memory's not all that bad," says the husband. "No problem -- a dish of ice cream with strawberries and

whipped cream. I don't need to write it down."

He goes into the kitchen; his wife hears pots and pans banging around. The husband finally emerges from the

kitchen and presents his wife with a plate of bacon and eggs.

She looks at the plate and asks, "Hey, where's the toast I asked for?"

BEAUTIFUL

A lawyer was just waking up from anesthesia after surgery, and his wife was sitting by his side. His eyes fluttered

open and he said, "You're beautiful!" and then he fell asleep again. His wife had never heard him say that so she

stayed by his side. A couple of minutes later, his eyes fluttered open and he said, "You're cute!" Well, the wife was

dissapointed because instead of "beautiful," it was "cute." She asked, "What happened to 'beautiful'?" His reply was

"The drugs are wearing off!"
