FROM LEO'S LAIR As I continue to travel through our wonderful District, I am amazed by the variety and scope of projects our clubs are undertaking. We are truly making a difference in this world. I am going to continue to ask that we put more emphasis on what is referred to in Rotary as the "forgotten avenue of service", vocational ser- vice. In an era of less than optimum ethics and morals, we need to go back to basics. We should follow the "Declaration of Rotarians in Businesses and Professions." Let us try to emulate the expec- tations contained therein. You can download the Declaration PDF by clicking the link: http:// www.rotary.org/RIdocuments/enpdf/200en.pdf. Please display a copy of the Declaration at your workplace so that all may see the high ethical standards Rotarians live by. I would encourage all Rotarians to save some important dates. FROM LEO'S LAIR

As I continue to travel through our wonderful District, I am amazed by the variety and scope of projects our clubs are undertaking. We are truly making a difference in this world.

I am going to continue to ask that we put more emphasis on what is referred to in Rotary as the "forgotten avenue of service", vocational ser-vice. In an era of less than optimum ethics and morals, we need to go back to basics. We should follow the "Declaration of Rotarians in Businesses and Professions." Let us try to emulate the expec-tations contained therein. You can download the Declaration PDF by clicking the link: http://www.rotary.org/RIdocuments/enpdf/200en.pdf.

Please display a copy of the Declaration at your workplace so that all may see the high ethical standards Rotarians live by.

I would encourage all Rotarians to save some important dates. Our District Con-ference will again be held at the Hutchinson Island Marriott Resort. This year's date's are April 30-May 2, 2010. We are receiving confirmations from a number of inspiring speakers. The Rotary International Convention will be held June 20-23, 2010 in Mon-treal, Canada It is not too early to register.

Thank you for your passion and enthusiasm for Rotary and for making this world a better place for all to live.

“When your club enters into a Grant with a Rotary club overseas, do you really try to get to know something about those Rotarians? Do you try to build a lasting relationship? I know that it is not a requirement in the pa-perwork, but isn't that the point? I can tell you that I now have some very good friends in Mexico and I still continue to communi-cate with them. Every club involved in a Matching Grant should be able to say the same about their Rotary International part-ners.”

Just call me if you want some homework help on how to do better Grants.

Reverse Matching Grant purchases van for the

Lighthouse for the Blind of the Palm Beaches

In a brilliant ―thinking outside the box‖ effort PDG Jean Starkey was able to bring to-gether two Rotary clubs in Mexico, the Rotary clubs of Palm Beach-Flagler and Delray Beach and the magic of our Foundation’s Matching Grant program. With PDG Jean’s experience as District Foundation Chair (2006–2009) she was able to maximize all the funds available from the clubs, DDF (district designated funds) and the RI Foundation. She calls it ―Rotary Math‖ as a $1400 investment of club money blossomed into a $14,000 grant for a project right here in our district.

Joe Ieradi, Past President of the Palm Beach Flagler club, found an eight passenger van at Mullinex Ford in North Palm Beach perfect for the Lighthouse for the Blind’s transportation needs. Unfortunately, the van was $4750 more than the grant mon-ies. Mullinex Ford generously donated the difference in an outstanding show of com-munity support. Mary Allen, Director of Vision Services for the Lighthouse, expressed her gratitude to all the many hands that have brought this Rotary project together for them. She can be contacted regarding their programs at 561 586-5600. The Light-house for the Blind, a part of Goodwill Industries, services five counties within our Dis-trict offering Adjustment Training, Mobility Training and other life-changing skills for the blind on the treasure coast.

The RI Board of Directors adopted a new

membership slogan, “Each Rotarian: Reach

One, Keep One,” at its June meeting. The

slogan emphasizes the need to focus on both

recruitment and retention in membership

On September 19th GSE Chairman Bill Pearl hosted the GSE Selection Committee to an outstanding brunch featuring Korean cuisine prepared specially for the occasion by Bill’s wife, Dr. Joann Hendelman-Pearl. Our DG Leo, having traveled to Korea on many occa-sions, was delighted with the spicy authentic-ity of Joann’s culinary efforts.

Special thanks to Bill and Joann Pearl for bringing to us the International spirit and ex-citement of the GSE experience for 2009-10. Team member selection is slated for October 10th. If you would like to offer Denny your support, her email is [email protected].

Chairman Bill’s committee featured members from past GSE teams and past team leaders as well as members of our District leadership, who had five strong candidates to consider.

Eradication of Polio is the dream of every Rotarian and the fulfillment of our dream is just around the corner. Today, there are only a few areas of the world where polio re-mains and our efforts are fo-cusing on those last remain-ing outposts. As you are aware Bill Gates has challenged Rotary Inter-national to raise a matching $200m. Together we are moving forward at an ever increasing pace and have al-ready achieved almost half of this amount. We have asked every club to have a fund rais-ing project that will involve non-Rotarians in an effort to

include our communities in our goal and share the re-sponsibility with others. Par-ticipating in a NID is always a life changing event for Rotari-ans who make this take a hands-on effort. Your club president has been provided information regarding two upcoming NID events. If inter-ested contact your club presi-dent or PDG Harold Friend, D6930 Polio Eradication Chair, 2009-10 [email protected]

Rotary Club of Stuart’s project fosters Authors of the FutureRotary Club of Stuart’s project fosters Authors of the FutureRotary Club of Stuart’s project fosters Authors of the Future

Known as the Junior Authors Program the Rotary Club of Stuart offers third grade stu-dents a unique opportunity to become young authors and release their creative lit-erary muses. Working with the English/Creative Writing and Arts departments of The Pine School this project al-lows students to tap into their imaginations and bring their ideas onto paper.

They engage in a number of pre-writing activities to help them decide what they want to write about, organize their thoughts and edit their stories. They learn about the skills needed to keep a reader interested -- A catchy, bold or outrageous begin-ning, adventurous, funny, complex characters and a thrilling or mysterious story-line.

Each child prepares an ―About the Author‖ summary about themselves and are able to choose someone spe-cial to whom they dedicate their book. When their books are done and are returned from the company that turns them into a hard cover book*, a school assembly is planned where Rotarians are invited and each child show-cases their book to family and friends. Writing can be a deeply satisfying experience for young authors which we hope will lead to a lifetime of personal expression.

More detailed information about this Literacy project should be directed to Rotar-ian Patricia Gage at the Pines School at 772 283-1222 [email protected] .

*Each kit runs $20.00 for a twelve page bound book.
