• Before going to the GI Bill website you will first need to obtain a few documents such as SELECTED RESERVE EDUCATIONAL ASSIST PGM (GI BILL) NOTICE OF BASIC ELIGIBILITY DD 2384, CERTIFICATE OF RELEASE OR DISCHARGE FROM ACTIVE DUTY DD214, STATEMENT OF UNDERSTANDING, THE SELECTED RESERVE MONTOGOMERY GI BILL (10 USC CHAPTER 1606) DA 5435.

• These documents are obtained by logging into your IPERMS with your CAC card on this website https://iperms.hrc.army.mil/rms/login

• Next you will apply for your benefits at vabenefits.vba.va.gov/ then click I am a new Vonapp User, then continue twice, then create a Vonapp account. Next, enter your information (BE SURE TO WRITE THIS DOWN). After this you will be logged in and be prompted to create a new form. We will be filling out Education Benefits (Form22-1990). Finally, create a new claim.

• The benefits MOST of you will be applying for will be Montgomery GI Bill Chapter 1606. Next fill out the blocks – see attached email for a example packet.

• At the end it will ask if you would like to upload documents. YOU must upload your Notice of Basic Eligibility, DD214, and GI Bill contract which you pulled from your IPERMS.

• Next, your claim will be processing and generally takes 6-8 weeks. You will receive back pay however. Be sure to follow up with the VA regarding your benefits! The VA can be reached at 888-442-4551.
