  • 2 Bearing Inspection

Rothe Erde slewing rings aredesigned according to customer-specified loads and applications.

To determine the condition of abearing and thereby its expec-ted service lifethe slewing ringsshould be subjected to periodicinspections during their operatinglife.

    Wear Measurement

For assessing the condition of abearing, we recommend that itsnormal wear rate is determined. The wear present in the racewaysystem shows itself by a changein the axial motion of the bearing.Depending on the individual con-ditions, wear can be determinedeither by measuring the tiltingclearance or by axial reductionmeasurements. Another meansof wear assessment is by greasesample analysis.

    Tilting Clearance Measurement

For equipment allowing this, werecommend to measure the tiltingclearance in order to determinethe wear. The first measurementmust be performed when theequipment is put into operationin order to obtain a base valuefor subsequent repeat measure-ments.

Check the bolts. The measuringpoints have to be marked aroundthe circumference while the boomis kept in a specified position. Themeasurements are then takenbetween the lower mating struc-ture and the bearing bolted to thesuperstructure (Fig. 1).

The measurements should be ta-ken as close to the bearing aspossible in order to minimize theeffect of elastic deformations inthe system.

The first measurement should beperformed when the equipmentis put into operation in order toobtain a base value for subse-quent repeat measurements.

Fig. 2:Loading principle for axial reductionmeasurement (see also Rothe Erde maincatalogue).

3 Maximum permissible increaseof the bearing clearances

    4

The dial gauges should have anaccuracy of 0.01 mm. Start withapplying the maximum backwardmoment and set the dial gaugesto zero. Then apply a forwardturning moment with load uptake,if necessary.

Slew the superstructure to themarked positions and repeat themeasurement procedure. Whenall positions have been measu-red, record the base values ob-tained in tabular form (test certi-ficate).

The measurements should be re-peated every twelve months asa minimum and under identicalconditions as the base measure-ment. The difference between thevalues measured and the basevalues represents the wear thathas occurred.

The measurements should be re-peated every twelve months asa minimum and under identicalconditions as the base measure-ment. The difference between thevalues measured and the basevalues represents the wear thathas occurred.

If the wear is found to have heavi-ly increased, the time intervalsbetween measurements shouldbe shortened.

If the acceptable wear values(tables 1, 2 and 3) are exceeded, please consult Rothe Erde.

    Axial Reduction Measurement

In cases where it is not possibleto measure the tilting clearancewe recommend the axial reduc-tion measurement. Here, the cen-ter of gravity of the load combi-nation is to be within the trackdiameter of the bearing. The loa-ding principle is shown in Fig. 2.

Check the bolts. Mark the respec-tive measuring positions aroundthe circumference while keepingthe boom in a specified position.

The measurements are takenbetween the lower mating struc-ture and the bearing ring boltedto the superstructure (Fig. 3).

Record the base values obtainedin tabular form and allocate themto the respective base measure-ments (test certificate).

The axial reduction measurementshould be repeated every twelvemonths as a minimum, alwaysunder identical conditions.

In case of heavy wear the timeintervals between measurementsshould be shortened. If the devia-tion from the base measurementexceeds the maximum valuesshown in tables 1 through 3,please consult Rothe Erde. Tocontrol slewing rings, a basemeasurement has to be perfor-med when putting it into operati-on (measurement of the axial re-duction or the tilting clearance)and entered into the table. Copyto RE. In parallel, first greasesamples have to be taken. Stategrease type. Complete certificate.

An additional measurement ofthe axial reduction resp. the tiltingclearance has to be effected eve-ry 12 months. Thereafter, 6 grea-se samples have to be taken. It is thus possible to control thebearing continuously.Together with every slewing ring, the customer receives a greasesampling set. (Fig. 4). After thegrease sample analysis, onefurther set is put at disposal.

Grease sample collection Remove the sealing elements

    from the sampling ports(Figs. 5 and 6).

The sampling port of the sup-porting raceway is under theboom.

Three-row bearings have oneadditional port for the retainingraceway offset by 180.

Slew the boom into the mainworking direction.

Insert flexible clear plastic tube, which is divided into sectionsof 120 mm length each andpositively connected to the suc-tion system into the boreholeup to the raceway area (Fig. 7)

While rotating the slewing ringslowly, collect the grease sam-ples 1, 2 and 3 from the sup-porting raceway always at adistance of approx. 45.

Analogously, collect the greasesamples 4, 5 and 6 from theretaining raceway (Fig. 8).

    Fig. 8:Main working range.
