4 Wind power.A renewable energy source.

Increasing environmentalawareness and limited energyresources have made wind ener-gy more and more important asan environmentally friendly com-plementary solution to conven-tional electrical power generationall over the world. And the per-centage of regenerative energygeneration will even increase inthe years to come.

Continuous advancement inthis technology has led to pro-gressive growth in the variousoutput classes. Consideringthat the average output of windenergy turbines amounted tono more than 250 kW in theearly nineties, intensive researchand development have nowmade turbines with outputs inthe megawatt range the modernstandard.

The rotor bearingIn this application, slewing ring bearings functioning as self-retainingmoment bearings are exposed to extreme dynamic loads. They donot require rotor hubs and allow to give the nacelle a low-profileand light construction.

The blade bearingTo assure optimum power output from the generator even at varying wind speeds,the pitch angles of the rotor blades must be adjustable. Depending on the pitch drive,blade bearings can be provided with or without integrated gearing.

Rothe Erde slewing ring bearings absorb all radialand axial forces and the resultant tilting momentsin a single self-retaining, ready-to-install bearingunit. Their low profile and excellent weight/perform-ance ratio, open centre, and the possibility of anintegrated gearing make Rothe Erde bearings idealstructural components in wind energy turbines.

Bearing designs for wind energy turbinesThe requirements to be met by wind turbinebearings demand individually adapted designs.Here, Rothe Erde offers the ideal bearings up to adiameter of 8,000 mm. Long-standing experienceand competence in the dimensioning of ball androller slewing ring bearings result in optimumdesigns for the loads to be expected.

Yaw and blade bearings mainly execute adjustingmovements. Most suitable for this purpose areour single-row and two-row 4-point bearings.

Extreme load cases are defined to occur veryrarely during the entire service life of a bearingand are shown as static loads.

The small twisting angle which is often not evenwithin the pitch range of the rolling elements,makes the rating of both bearing types based ontheir theoretical service life (fatigue life) ratherdifficult. Blade bearings in particular have to with-stand the continuous load changes resulting frompulsating loads. Therefore, the design of thesebearings relies on the Hertzian pressure.

Rothe Erde yaw and blade bearings are given aslight preload with defined torque resistancevalues during production as a means to preventunwanted false brinelling.

Special Rothe Erde double lip seals resistant toozone and ultraviolet light are installed to assureoptimum protection of the raceway system.

Rotor or main hub bearings rotate continuously.Three-row roller slewing ring bearings in particularhave proven their superiority in this application.

Due to the high dynamic loads they are exposedto, these bearings are dimensioned with respectto their theoretical life.

Corrosion protectionRothe Erde uses various reliable surface treat-ment methods to meet the specific requirementsregarding outside corrosion protection. A highlysuitable protection against detrimental environ-mental conditions is surface sand-blasting withsubsequent zinc-flame-spraying to EN 22063.
