FROM THE VICARAGE:As I write these few words in the early part of September, we are very much in the Harvest season. A new word has come into use in the Church in recent years to describe this time of year – and that word is “Creationtide”. It is a word which well describes what we are thinking about in church at this time of year. Harvest is about so much more than just thanking God for all the good things He provides us with every day. It is also an opportunity for us to reflect upon our world generally, and especially to consider environmental issues. We are all now so much more conscious of our responsibility to look after the world God has given us to enjoy than we were just a few years ago. Many issues which were not so long ago the concern of only a very few activists are now mainstream – and we have come to learn that we can all make a difference to the health of our environment by making even small changes to the way we live. It is good for us to remember what we read in the very first Chapter of the Book of Genesis, the first Book of the Old Testament. God’s Creation of human beings was the pinnacle of His Creation and He gave them charge over all the rest of Creation – but He gave them, He gives us, that charge not as owners but as stewards. Our responsibility is to leave the world in a better state for those who come after us than we inherited it from those before us.

CHURCHYARD NEWS:By the time this is printed Autumn will be well on its way. The Harvest Festival Service will have taken place, and our two wonderful scarecrows (brilliantly made by David Dolman, our many thanks), will be nearing the end of their stay.

The churchyard is looking excellent at the moment, and has been remarked upon by many people, so well done to all our volunteers, hopefully they will not have to mow for much longer and can take a well earned break for a short time. However tidying and maintaining the churchyard goes on regardless.

I will finish with the following poem by John Keats which is very appropriate for this time of year.

Seasons of mists and mellow fruitfulness, Close bosom-friend of the maturing sun;

Conspiring with him how to load and bless,With fruit the vines that round the thatch-eves run;

To bend with apples the moss’d cottage-trees,And fill all fruit with ripeness to the core.
