When the new format hit my door, I, like many others,

threw up my hands in despair--ahahah!

But now I'm a "recant." The newspaper business

everywhere is in dire trouble. What you did was to save it

in our not so small part of the world. The yokels--uh,

locals--should be happy as a blood-choked mosquito. I,

for one, was not aware of the diversity of life here in

Charlotte until you began playing it up. Wow!

Not every paper could pull this off, but the Observer can

because (1) you have such good writers, (2) and

photographers. I feel as if I'm reading an on-going novel-

-illustrated. Tell me more, show me more!

As a writer, I thank you for the book page and the photo

of my dear friend, and fellow poet, Dannye Powell, in the

upper left-hand corner.

You have a winner there.

Onward and upward,

Julie Suk
