On July 22, Bobby Andrews, Bridgeport Power Systems technician, rushed to the aid of an Oxy Petroleum employee who fell unconscious from heatstroke at the Terrell Plant.

According to Bobby, he was simply doing his job, nothing he wouldn’t expect from anyone else. He attributes his action to experience and training.

Bobby was on-site that day servicing a Caterpillar® generator and had just sat down for lunch when he heard a frantic call for help on the two-way radio. Bobby ran approximately 300 yards to the operations room where 50-year-old Mike had been unconscious for a total of five minutes. Bobby immediately opened Mike’s airway, checked his pulse and applied mouth-to-mouth. Mike’s skin felt very warm and he had a very faint irregular pulse, which made Bobby think of heatstroke.

While someone located an automated external defibrillator and first aid kit, Bobby used a damp cloth to cool Mike down and a bottle mask to keep oxygen in his lungs. He was able to relay pertinent information to the EMTs when they arrived one hour 20 minutes later.

Bobby points out a silver lining as a result of this incident. The Terrell Plant has added more AEDs and additional wall station kits that include an oxygen tank, glucose and heart monitors, and other related first aid supplies. For many remote locations, the EMTs are often community volunteers, like Bobby himself, and there are only so many ambulances and volunteers. When the initial 911 call for this incident was made, the ambulance was transporting a patient to a hospital in Iraan, which caused the hour 20-minute delay. It was fortunate that Bobby was on site!

Bobby and his wife Connie, also a trained EMT who serves as a Schleicher County fire department volunteer, live on a ranch near Eldorado.

HOLT Power Systems is nearing completion on two expansion projects that will increase capabilities and provide customers with additional repair options from HOLT CAT.

A 28,000 square foot engine rebuild and overhaul facility has been built in San Antonio. This addition, which is equipped with a positive air-conditioning system with high-efficiency filtration to control contamination from dirt and other foreign materials, doubles the overhaul capacity for diesel and natural gas engines which power earthmoving equipment, petroleum drilling rigs, natural gas compressor packages and generator sets for standby, emergency and prime power.

To ensure the engine rebuilding process is as efficient as possible, the new facility was designed with each of the steps in an engine rebuild taken into consideration.

HOLT has established 13 distinct tasks in the engine rebuilding process – Wash, Teardown and Inspection, Machining, Component Rebuilding, Reassembly (eight stations), Dyno Testing and Final Inspection, then Repainting.

All of the rebuilding tasks will be monitored and refined, with the goal being to rebuild C32 and 3412 engines in 48 hours. By implementing more efficient processes and conducting quality checks at specific points in the rebuild, the goal is to reduce the current eight day turnaround in half, and then continue refining the processes to reach the 48 hour goal.

With the addition of two engine dynamometers, one

rated to 1,725 horsepower and one to 4,500 horsepower, HOLT will have the ability to measure engine burn rates and analyze five gas emissions indicators.

New, higher capacity machining tools have expanded HOLT’s capabilities to perform machining on all engine sizes.

HOLT’s Longview Power Systems Division is now housed in a 52,500 square foot stand- alone facility at 2210 Neiman Marcus Parkway, just 10 minutes from the main campus on Loop 281. Nine thousand square feet of the new space is dedicated to the Power Systems parts department where PSD customers can conveniently order and pick up parts over the counter.

As in San Antonio, the Longview engine rebuild and repair facility will be fully capable of rebuilding diesel and natural gas engines that are used in many petroleum, electrical power generation, industrial and earthmoving applications. A complete machine shop will support the engine rebuild operation, enabling enhanced turnaround times.

HOLT has established a regimented process for rebuilding engines that are used extensively in the oilfield and energy exploration industries. The 3500 “Hybrid Assembly Line” will allow segmenting of the complex elements of this rebuilding process. By focusing on a defined segment of the rebuild, technicians become experts in a specific portion of the process. Once a technician masters a particular segment, he can then move on to the next repair segment. By mastering all of the rebuilding segments he will then have the competencies to complete an entire rebuild. The customers’ benefit from a hybrid assembly process will be enhanced quality, greater rebuild efficiencies and a shorter rebuild turnaround time.

The rebuild facility has three engine dynamometers,

one rated at 1,750 horsepower and one rated at 3,125 horsepower. A 6,000-horsepower dynamometer, specifically designed for testing large bore (3,600-sized) industrial engines is the third dyno unit. Since there are only two or three of this sized dynos in North America, HOLT’S Longview facility is in a unique position to be able to offer dyno testing on 3600 sized large bore engines.

The entire Longview facility is operating within “Lean Manufacturing” guidelines, which is an overall methodology that seeks to minimize the resources needed for production. Emphasis is on eliminating activities that inflate costs, lead times and inventory requirements, and placing more focus on the use of planned maintenance, quality improvement programs and a flexible work force.

and bucket forces that are about seven percent greater than the previous models for aggressive digging. Drawbar pull is about five percent greater for increased maneuverability and solid performance when moving on slopes or when traveling in poor underfoot conditions.

All utilize the Cat® C6.4 engine which employs ACERT™ Technology as well as the ADEM™ A4 electronic control module which manages fuel delivery to get the best performance per unit of fuel used.

These excavators incorporate additional systems to save fuel. The Standard Power

Mode can reduce fuel consumption as much as eight percent when performing work that doesn’t require full power. Automatic Engine Speed Control cuts engine speed in no-load or light-load situations. The cooling system has a demand fan controlled by a viscous clutch that automatically adjusts fan speed to meet cooling requirements.

Among the many optional features is the Tool Control System for D-Series models. The Tool Control System is exclusive to Caterpillar and allows operators and technicians to set auxiliary hydraulics flows and pressures by using the monitor in the cab instead of using expensive service tools. The customer can pre-set and store as many as 10 flow and pressure settings for 10 different hydra-mechanical work tools.

Governor Rick Perry announced to hundreds of people gathered for a recent groundbreaking ceremony about a new Caterpillar manufacturing plant. The one-million-square-foot, $170 million manufacturing plant will employ about 1,400 people. It will be located on Interstate 10. Gov. Perry says that this is a big deal for Seguin, and this is a big deal for the state of Texas.

Perry says the Caterpillar plant is just part of what will make the global economic downturn less severe in Texas, and he credited low taxes, a focus on education and reasonable state regulations for helping create jobs. “Every time you see that piece of Caterpillar equipment in the future, you will know a big piece of it was made in Texas,” Perry continued.

Seguin was in competition with locations in Mexico, Alabama and South Carolina to build large engines for Caterpillar equipment. It won with the help of a 10-year property tax abatement, promises to build roads and sewer lines to the plant and $10 million from the Texas Enterprise Fund.

Gary Stroup, vice president of Caterpillar’s large power systems division, said the biggest factor that brought the company to Seguin was its friendly and helpful people. “Everyone we have met here are the kind of people we want to be with, the kind of community we want to be part of,” Stroup said.

Peter Holt, owner of HOLT CAT in San Antonio, the largest U.S. Caterpillar dealer and great-grandson of the company’s founder, was on hand for the ceremony. “I wish I could say I had a big role in bringing them here, but they were already rolling when I got involved,” he said. But Holt said he’s been pushing the company for a decade to come to Texas and tried to use his friendship with Perry to help persuade him to commit money from the state’s Enterprise Fund to lure the company here.

The first phase of the plant is scheduled to be complete in 2010, and the entire project should be finished in 2011. Caterpillar is closing plants in Illinois and South Carolina to consolidate the work in Seguin.

While this coaching strategy may or may not be effective, the idea certainly has merit — not just in athletics, but in the earthmoving business, too. Imagine how successful your company could be if you managed your equipment in such a way that catastrophic failure was not an option.

Life without failureConstruction and mining equipment

is designed to wear out over time, but it doesn’t have to fail — ever. If a machine is properly operated, maintained and managed, problems can be predicted and prevented, and repairs can be completed before failure. Great things are in store for equipment owners who refuse to accept failure. Here are just some of the benefits.• Maintain production. Without the

disruption of unplanned downtime, you can stay on the job, moving material and earning revenue. you’ll have the power to do more work in less time and be in a stronger position to compete for additional business.

• Schedule repairs at convenient times.When service is planned in advance, it can be done at the best possible time, instead of the worst. you’ll determine when to take the machine out of service, and as a result, production won’t have to suffer.

• Minimizedowntime.It takes more time to repair a failed component than it does to replace a worn one, so by fixing problems before failure, you can keep your machine working a larger percentage of the time.

• Control repair costs. Unplanned repairs cost much more than planned ones, because when a component fails, there is usually contingent damage. The extra problems increase parts and labor costs. To control repair costs, it’s best to take care of problems before they turn into catastrophes.

• Get full value from the equipmentinvestment. Repairing and replacing key components at the right time — not too early, not too late — allows you to capitalize on all the performance and life that was designed and built into your product. you invested in a productive, durable machine; be sure to get what you paid for.

Preventing failuresIf you’re determined to keep your

equipment running productively and cost effectively over its entire life cycle, here are some things to keep in mind. • It starts with the operator. Put the right

person in the cab, and you’ll reduce the risk of premature component failure. Hire exceptional people, train them thoroughly, help them improve their skills and reward them for excellent performance. Make sure operators always perform thorough walk-around inspections prior to start-up. Teach them safe and proper operating procedures, and encourage them to be alert for leaks, noises and other signs of trouble.

• Maintenance matters. It’s impossible to overstate the importance of maintenance discipline. To keep a machine failure-free, change fluids and filters on a regular schedule, using high-quality oil and filter products and safe, clean maintenance procedures. The change intervals the manufacturer recommends can be adjusted, but if you modify them, work with a professional who understands your equipment and the application in which it works. Don’t forget to keep accurate maintenance records, too. An up-to-date maintenance history will help you spot recurring problems and take care of them before they cause failures.

• Fluid analysis pays off. Fluid analysis remains the single best way to catch critical problems in their early stages. Choose a comprehensive analysis program that reports on component condition as well as fluid condition. Be sure you’re using proper sampling procedures, submit samples regularly and trust your fluids to professionals who have the knowledge and experience to interpret results accurately.

• Conduct regular inspections. For best results, stick to the inspection schedule established by the manufacturer of your product. It should include a daily walk-around, performed by the operator; a more in-depth inspection, completed during fluid and filter changes and incorporating fluid analysis; and a comprehensive

performance assessment, done by a professional service technician, annually or every 2,000–3,000 hours.

• Pay attention to repair indicators. Most of the time, your machine will try to tell you when something’s not right. The key is to pay attention. Leaks, unusual noises, excessive smoke, abnormal vibrations, gear slippage and overheating are all warning signs that could indicate critical problems. A quick check of a machine’s service meter hours, service history, fuel consumption or fluid analysis results can also reveal the need for planned service work.

The HOLT CAT Fluids Analysis Laboratory has made some major improvements to the services that it can provide to our customers. In 2006 the Fluids Lab was placed under the Customer Support department, where close attention was given to the Lab’s capabilities and processes. Increasing demand and volume of the labs oil analysis service has created a need for some changes. We made several changes to the Oil lab, including purchasing new equipment and going “green.”

We replaced two ICP (Inductively Coupled Plasma) Instruments, which are used for wear metal analysis. The older units could only sample for 7 elements while the new units now have the capability of testing for 15 elements allowing us to detect problems that were not visible before. The new instrument

is 50 % faster, which ensures quicker, accurate processing of samples, giving us the ability to inform you sooner if any warning signs are detected.

An infrared machine, which measures soot, oxidation, nitration and sulfur products has been added. An additional viscometer, which is used to test the viscosity of oil and to detect chemical breakdown of oil components, was purchased. Results from viscosity tests will indicate if it is safe to extend oil life.

Our computer system was upgraded and conversion to a web based software system which provides real time sample results on- line.

To be more environmentally friendly HOLT is now recycling cleaning chemicals, reducing the cost of new chemicals by 75% and making

less of an impact on the environment. HOLT CAT is currently working to become

a central certified S.O.S. (Scheduled Oil Sampling) testing facility. By being a central testing facility we will be able to perform trend analysis. Trend analysis will reflect how a machine is operating over a period of oil samples. So, you can be assured that your oil is being analyzed the same way every time. Being able to access Cat’s database of oil sample results will enable us to see the history of samples for a particular machine, regardless of where previous oil samples were tested.

When Chris Staff and his partner Jeff Allgayers, owners of J.A.C.S. Construction need reliable equipment they partner up with HOLT CAT. “Nothing really compares to Cat® equipment,” said Chris and added, “My Caterpillar® Skid Steer Loader can move almost as much dirt as a regular John Deere® or Case® Backhoe Loader.”

The name J.A.C.S. derives from Jeff Allgayer and Chris Staff who founded the company in

2002. “Jeff owns a rental company that rents Caterpillar Backhoe Loaders and he gave me one to use until my cash flow was better,” said Chris. He credits his success to Caterpillar Equipment. When J.A.C.S. first started out they rented machines from different manufacturers, but nothing compared to Caterpillar. I rented a Case Backhoe Loader but it broke down the first day on the job,” said Chris. When asked why he chooses HOLT CAT as his equipment dealer, Chris replied that HOLT CAT provided him with the right equipment and offered him the service he needed to get his business started.

Jeff and Chris purchased a Caterpillar Backhoe Loader and a Caterpillar Skid Steer Loader, which they still use today. “These machines have 6,000 hours and are running as good as they did when we first bought them,” said Chris. J.A.C.S. also owns a D3 dozer and just bought a new Caterpillar Backhoe Loader. The company started with

land clearing and expanded the business to excavation, utility work, swimming pools and today does full site work.

Chris said that Caterpillar equipment gives J.A.C.S. the competitive edge because Cat machines helps them complete jobs faster and more efficiently. Their operators like the joystick controls and the power of the CAT engine and Chris added that Caterpillar machines are very dependable. “We have not had any major problems with our CAT equipment, only normal wear and tear. We had a lot of problems with competitive equipment hydraulic pumps giving out, lack of power, poor parts availability and high freight costs.” Chris stated, “Competitive machines also do not have the power we need to move dirt, pull out loose rocks, dig into the base or just knock down trees. Our CAT equipment can handle all of those jobs without losing any power. It looks good when we pull up to a jobsite with CAT equipment because the machines always look new. The decals may fade but the machines always keep their radiant shine,” said Chris.

Chris noted that Caterpillar equipment is very easy to service with the skid steer radiator that flips out and a cab that lifts up, making it easy to conduct daily maintenance checks. “When I operated a competitive skid steer loader my back was hurting at the end of the day, but now that I have a CAT Skid Steer Loader I feel energized because Caterpillar does not have foot throttles, they have joysticks controls, which makes it less tiring to operate. If your operators know how to use the joysticks in the CAT you will have more productive operators who will get more done, because they are not tired at the end of the day,” said Chris.

Chris and Jeff both agree that HOLT CAT gives them the competitive edge because they have an equipment dealer that provides the service they need. “We buy a lot of small equipment from HOLT, but we never get treated like the “small guys” and David Goll, our Account Sales Representative in Austin, is always here to assist us with our equipment

needs. He is very knowledgeable and treats us with the utmost respect,” said Jeff Allgayer. “HOLT’s service department delivers on its promises. When Course Crafters, Inc. is renovating a golf course in Texas and needs quality rental machines, they look to HOLT Rental Services. Course Crafters, Inc. was established in 1992 by Bob Pinson and is headquartered in Gainesville, Georgia. The company specializes in golf course renovation and construction projects that span from Alabama, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Maryland, Mississippi, North and South Carolina to Oklahoma, Ohio, New york, Tennessee, Texas and Virginia.

“HOLT Rental Services keeps us running,” says Terry Mausbach, Course Crafters Superintendent. Terry has been employed with Course Crafters for six years and is in

charge of the total golf course renovation in the Dallas/Fort Worth area where the project began in September 2008. To prepare for course renovations, the club began to eliminate all grass surfaces, including the tee boxes, fairways, roughs and greens. In addition, all sand from the bunkers had to be removed.

The golf club course renovation is a major project that requires 8,700 trucks to bring in new materials for the course rebuild and concrete for the six miles of cart paths. The entire golf courses 168 acres, except the greens, which will be seeded in a custom process, will be sod. “When we started the projects we kept ecological concerns in mind

to create a more eco-friendly golf course,” says Terry. The old grass was buried to create new elevations for tee boxes; the old paths have been crushed and compacted in borrow pits to create new berms along the fairways. All the trees have been tagged and plotted on an overview plan so that we can relocate them instead of removing them. Course Crafters will also install a new drainage and irrigation system at the course, which is scheduled for completion in June 2009.

Bar Constructors, Inc., a specialized construction company owned by the Arrambide family – brothers Sam, Joe, Michael and Sid and Sid’s wife Marlene -- has taken delivery of the first Link-Belt crane provided by HOLT Crane & Equipment just six weeks after HOLT became a Link-Belt dealer on July 1.

“Cost was not the reason we went with HOLT,” says Sid Arrambide. “It was because of HOLT’s reputation for service and parts availability.”

This first unit was sold on Aug. 11, then delivered in seven pieces on Aug. 14 and assembled on the job site at the City of Dallas East Side Wastewater Treatment Plant by HOLT trained mechanics with the assistance of Mark Fett, Link-Belt representative.

The new unit is a 248 Hylab5, 200-ton lattice boom crawler crane. It was used at the plant for installation of new pump station equipment. Bar

Constructors is a longtime user of Link-Belt cranes and also Caterpillar earthmoving equipment. The company specializes in construction and service work for wastewater treatment plants and pipelines.

The 248 Hylab5 crawler crane was introduced by Link-Belt in 2004. The model delivered to Bar Constructors has a 200-ton lifting capacity and a 210-foot boom. 5. When your equipment is sale ready, it will be advertised in print publications and different online sites. Your machines will receive maximum exposure to the world market.

6. Once the machine is sold, hOlT CAT will handle the rest. From invoicing to collection, hOlT CAT has you covered. You can also speak to your sales representative about tax deferment opportunities for a new machine purchase.

Customers who own and operate smaller machines like skid steer loaders, backhoe loaders, small track-type tractors, small wheel loader and mini-excavators have many of the same needs as customers who own large dozers, motor graders and off-highway trucks, but they also have needs that are unique to their business. HOLT CAT knows that all contractors are not the same so we’ve made changes at our North Dallas store to focus on serving the needs of contractors that expect fast, reliable repairs for their smaller machines, sometimes while they wait.

We are concentrating on smaller machines at our North Dallas store, so if you have backhoe loaders, small track-type tractors, small wheel loader, skid steer loader or other compact machine that needs minor repairs, is due for an oil change, scheduled interval maintenance service or a factory update bring it by our dedicated Express Service Bay, and we’ll get right to it. We are also working on refining parts operations and financing process that directly effect contractors with smaller machines. While these changes are still in the works, we have not forgotten that our goal is to be more than just your equipment dealer; we want to be your partner, so let’s partner up.
