MathematicsAs we near the end of the year, students have been doing varied investigations in their mathematics lessons. The aim of these mathematical investigations is to deepen students’ understanding of concepts taught in class and build on communication skills. Some of the investigations that have taken place include collecting data on the 2020 American Presidential election in a creative and innovative way. The task required students to gather information on each US state as though it was a live ballot. Results were then collated and displayed around the classroom as paper chains. This was an exhilarating and creative way to see how one decision can affect a society and country.

CareersYears 8 and 9Students in Years 8 and 9 have accessed the RHHS career webpage and are currently exploring their career interests, skills and abilities. They are encouraged to come to the Careers room to discuss their career ideas and collect resources such as free university and TAFE guides. Students are showing an interest in a wide range of industry sectors and are encouraged to consider career opportunities in the STEM related career fields. Those careers that incorporate interest, knowledge and skills in Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths.

Year 10Year 10 students are navigating multiple career websites such as myfuture, job jumpstart, job outlook all of which are providing them with a snapshot of their personal career attributes for the building of their career and transition plans. The RHHS Career webpage is providing information on jobs and employment to support students in their quests for casual and part-time employment. Students interested in the trades are reminded that they need to complete the White Card course credential and should register for the course next year in the Careers room.

Year 11Some students in Year 11 will be undertaking TVET/TAFE courses and school based traineeships next year. They are reminded that they are required to maintain their RHHS Stage 6 learning while at TAFE and on work placement.

Year 12Year 12 students have a busy time next year with tertiary applications, scholarships, traineeships and employment pathways. Links to tertiary information can be found on the RHHS Career website. Students are reminded to regularly access and read their RHHS’s email for information and notifications. We would like to wish Yr 12 2020 every success with their future careers. ROUSE HILL HIGH SCHOOL CAREERS WEBPAGE https://www.rousehillhscareers.com/

    PDHPE - CAFS Group Work

With rollover long behind us our senior students are hard at work with both the Community and Family Studies (CAFS) and PDHPE courses, already having submitted their first assessment tasks for the Preliminary course.

The CAFS students have successfully completed the first Core unit for the Preliminary Course and have moved onto studying Individuals and Groups. One of the classes had a challenge this week where they were split into groups and put into practice some of the skills that had been discussed in class.

Students identified the roles individuals adopt within a group and the impact this has on group cohesion. They displayed a positive approach to the task and we look forward to seeing what these students are capable of in the rest of the course.

EnglishAs the summer holidays approach, we would like to congratulate our students on their efforts throughout 2020! You have truly been an inspiration to the English faculty.

Before the school year ends, we are re-energising our student’s attitude toward reading by breaking them out of their usual routine. We are encouraging them to discover books that they may not typically borrow.

A fun way of motivating our students to read outside of their preferred genre is through a Library Scavenger Hunt. Students in Stage 4 and 5 have engaged in a cheerful search of books hidden in the library learning space. Students competed against their classmates to complete the hunt to achieve first prize! Students were able to achieve first place by being the fastest in completing the hunt by finding books that answered the scenario. Some included, “Find a book that might take place on an island; find a book that has an animal as the main character and look for two fairy tale or folk tale stories”.

The Library Scavenger Hunt gave our students a reason to explore the vast range of books at the RHHS library in a fun way. Along their journey, they discovered books and resources that they didn’t know the library possessed.

MathematicsWhat a year it has been!! If only we had 20-20 vision about what 2020 would bring us. As a faculty, the maths teachers have worked together to provide students with plenty of opportunities for learning. We have introduced lots of new things into our teaching and learning during 2020, including document cameras, Google Hangouts, Screencastify videos, Wizer.me activities, MathsOnline tasks, Smartermaths documents, lots of hands-on activities and endless online resources that have all enhanced the learning for both students and teachers.

We have seen students blossom into strong and confident mathematicians as we continue to support student growth in their mathematical skills here at Rouse Hill High School.

We hope that students have a well-deserved break over the Christmas holidays and they return with a re-charged mindset, a charged laptop, a pencil case full of stationery, a CASIO scientific calculator and a Mathematics book that is ready to be filled with the learning that will happen in 2021.

Happy holidays and Merry Christmaths everybody!!

    Science

One of the goals of the Youth Environmental Society (YES) is to promote sustainability and responsible use of resources at Rouse Hill High School. In pursuit of this endeavour, the YES team held ‘Lights Off!’ on Wednesday 2 December. This event was to raise awareness of how much energy we use each day, and to help us consider those times in our day that we can minimise our energy use. We encouraged all teachers to have the ‘lights off’ for at least one lesson in their day, as long as it was safe and practical to do so. Students got on board and recognised the benefits – saving money and saving energy, as well as the calming benefits of learning in natural light!

We hope everyone continues to value the importance of saving energy where we can, and recognising when they can contribute to sustainability at Rouse Hill High.

The Science faculty has welcomed two new members this term – a couple of violet-winged stick insects. The two females, named Ada and Rosalind after famous scientists from the past, are currently acclimatising to RHHS in the G block labs.

This species is also known as spur-legged stick insects, though only the males will have thick spurs on their hind legs and develop the violet wings. The females are impressive as they can lay eggs with young in them without any males present – this is known as parthenogenesis, and can only be done by a rare selection of species. Our stick insects love to eat Eucalyptus leaves, amongst the branches of which they do an impressive job of camouflage to protect themselves!

    CAPA

With the rollover to the new academic year, the CAPA faculty has introduced its new stage 6 course Visual Design. This course allows students to express their creativity by meeting a set design brief to create a “product” for a particular audience.

For their first project, students have been designing their own retro video game. They have been learning about the history of video game design, features of a successful video game and how to engage an audience through the user experience of the video game.

Students have used the online platform of Sploder to create their retro video game. They have been highly engaged in the design process and have enjoyed not only making, but playing each other’s games. From the CAPA faculty, we wish our students and the community a safe and enjoyable break and look forward to seeing everyone in 2021.

    HSIE

Rolling over into the new year, students in HSIE have had the opportunity to explore brand new subjects; Medieval Europe - was it really dark?! Popular Culture - what was Australia like in the 1960s? Changing Places - why are we living where we are?

    Ms D Vial

Year 8 students have started to develop an understanding of the Medieval Period, and like the fantastic historians they are, are demonstrating critical thinking while deciding whether or not it was actually dark. Does the plague mean that this period of time had no developments? How effective were the castles and types of warfare? Were the forms of punishment really necessary or even effective? As part of their assessment, they’ll investigate major developments in this period in order to answer the driving question - were the Dark Ages really dark?!

Year 10 were given the opportunity to investigate a key musician from the 1960s and assess their impact on Australian popular culture - this is the first time this unit has run at Rouse Hill High School, and we are certainly happy about the engagement!

As part of the unit, students were able to immerse themselves in different technology, including battling each other in Street Fighter on a Super Nintendo - Mr Gatehouse definitely had some skills over the students, they’ve got a lot to learn!

    Technologies - VET Hospitality

The Vocational Education and Training Hospitality Food and Beverage students have been developing their knowledge and understanding of hygienic practices for food safety and safe work practices and applying these in a practical context. Students have prepared a range of food and beverage items to demonstrate their competence in applying concepts in the practical environment. Last week students prepared a “Food Truck Chicken Burger”. Students effectively demonstrated their skills and agreed that the end result was delicious!
