“Economic Forecast 2011” What challenges do you anticipate for local businesses in 2011? The challenges that lie ahead in 2011 will be somewhat different than those we anticipated in 2010. It looks as if the economic outlook is a little brighter across the nation and in particular in Texas. Although there are signs of a pickup in our economy, businesses will have to remain cautious as they determine how to grow. In Rowlett many of our businesses, particularly retail and service businesses, will continue to deal

with the headaches of construction. Rowlett is undergoing a massive transportation transformation with President George Bush Turnpike and DART Blue Line under construction. The good news is we are getting closer each day to the opening of both projects and once they are open, it will make Rowlett more accessible to the North Texas region. In the meantime businesses will need to be creative as they market and bring customers to their doors. How has the Rowlett business community fared through the recession, and what is the outlook for the new year? The business community has remained strong in the Rowlett area. There have been some casualties in the turbulent economic times that we are in. But for the most part the businesses in Rowlett have worked hard to figure out ways to remain economically viable in the worst of times. The one positive side of a slow economy is that it forces businesses to examine their operations and processes and find efficiencies that they may not have thought of during the booming years. Going through that process makes businesses stronger and positioned for growth when the economy begins to rebound. What sort of growth or decline do you anticipate in employment? From what I’ve observed in Rowlett and through discussions with major employers we will see little change in our employment numbers. There are companies that will more than likely add to their workforce, but unfortunately there are some small businesses that are struggling. What is the Rowlett Chamber of Commerce doing to attract more businesses to the area? The Rowlett Chamber of Commerce works to improve the business climate in our area. Our main focus is to make sure our businesses have the support and tools they need to be successful. We work with the City’s Economic Development Department on joint projects so that we can leverage our resources. Their Economic Development team is top notch and does a great job talking to developers, real estate professionals as well as targeted industry leaders to market our community. Our job as a Chamber is to help retain businesses and help them grow and expand. We focus our energies on making sure there is a healthy business climate in Rowlett that is attractive to potential new businesses. We have expanded our programming this past year including adding SCORE mentors, a Job Fair, and improved business workshops. For more information about the tools we have to help businesses, visit our newly updated Website at www.rowlettchamber.com. Sincerely,

Lisa Ferrell, IOM President
