Austin Museum of Art January 1-31, 2014 Roy Lichtenstein was born on October 27, 1923 in the Upper West side of Manhattan. He is an American artist who is famous for his influence during the pop movement in the 1960s and is often referenced with artists such as Andy Warhol and James Rosenquist. He drew inspiration from bright color and comic books to create satirical artwork. His artwork stemmed from popular culture and Abstract Expressionist’s work during the 1950s and 60s. Lichtenstein’s most well known work is “Whaam!” which he painted in 1963, referencing the comic book All-American Men of War for inspiration.
