Ben-Day Dots The Ben-Day dots printing process, named after illustrator and printer Benjamin Henry Day, Jr., [1] is similar to Pointillism. Depending on the effect, color and optical illusion needed, small colored dots are closely spaced, widely spaced or overlapping. Magenta dots, for example, are widely spaced to create pink. Pulp comic books of the 1950s and 1960s used Ben-Day dots in the four process colors (cyan, magenta, yellow and black) to inexpensively create shading and secondary colors such as green, purple, orange and flesh tones. Use the pen tool to outline the face, hair, eyes, eyebrows, lips, teeth, etc. (NO FILL) THESE SHOULD ALL BE ON SEPARATE LAYERS Create your Ben-Day dot pattern (we will do this in class) and save as a swatch Begin filling your shapes with solid colors and Ben-Day dot patterns (50% may be filled with solid color but the rest must be Ben-Day dot filled) Use the brush tool to add the finishing black outlines (find a brush with varying thickness to imitate the look of a true, painted brush stroke) Create a talk-bubble and add your unique caption.
