A candidate referred on the Third or Final Examina- tion will not be admitted to re-examination until after the lapse of a period of not less than three months from the date of rejection and will be required, before being admitted to re-examination, to produce a certificate, in regard to Medicine and Surgery, of having attended the Medical and Surgical Practice, or the Medical or Surgical Practice, as the case may be, during the period of his reference ; and in regard to Midwifery and Diseases Peculiar to Women a certificate of having received, subsequently to the date of his reference, not less than three months’ instruction in that subject by a recognised teacher. Students of recognised universities in England, Scotland, and Ireland, who have passed examinations for a degree in Medicine at their universities in the subjects of the First and Second Examinations of the Examining Board, may enter for the Final Examination at the expiration of two years from the date of passing in Anatomy and Physiology, on production of the required certificates. Graduates in Medicine of certain recognised Indian, Colonial, and Foreign universities may present themselves for the Final examination under special conditions which can be ascertained on application to the Secretary. ROYAL COLLEGE OF PHYSICIANS OF LONDON. In addition to the diplomas granted by the English Con- joint Board, the Royal College of Physicians of London and the Royal College of Surgeons of England grant honour diplomas, which no longer give the right to practise pro- fessionally if held separately. The Royal College of Phy- sicians rf London has two such diplomas, the Fellowship which is a purely honorary distinction and the Membership which is obtained by examination. Membership.-Every candidate for the Membership of the College must furnish proof of having attained the age of 25 years. Candidates must not be engaged in trade, dispense medicine, make any engagement with a chemist, or any other person for the supply of medicine, or practise medicine or surgery in partnership, by deed or otherwise. Any candidate being already registered or having passed a qualifying examination in accordance with the Medical Act of 1886, who has obtained the degree of Doctor or Bachelor of Medicine at a University in the United Kingdom, in India, or a British colony, or who has obtained a foreign qualification entitling him to practise medicine or surgery in the country where such qualification has been conferred, wherein the courses of study and the examinations to be undergone previously to graduation have been adjudged by the Censors’ Board to be satisfactory, will (if the Censors think fit) be admitted to the Pass Examination. The nature and extent of this examination will, in the case of each candidate, be determined by the Censors’ Board. All other candidates must produce proof of having passed the examina- tions required for the Licence of the College. The examina- tion is directed partly to pathology and partly to the practice of medicine and may be modified in circumstances to be ascertained by application to the Registrar. For example, candidates under 40 years of age are examined in an ancient or modern language, a test from which their seniors are exempt. The fee for admission as a Member of the College is 40 guineas, except when the candidate for Membership is a Licentiate of the College, in which case the fee already paid for the Licence shall be deducted from the 40 guineaC. The fee for the examination is .66 6s. Fellowship.-The Fellows are selected annually from the ranks of the Members. ROYAL COLLEGE OF SURGEONS OF ENGLAND. The Royal College of Surgeons of England confers its diploma of Fellow upon a few distinguished persons in an honorary capacity. A certain number of Members of long standing are also elected to the Fellowship. But the bulk of the Fellows obtain the diploma as the result of examination. Fellowship.-The examination for the Fellowship is divided into two parts-viz., the First Examination and the Second Examination. The subjects of the First Examination are Anatomy and Physiology and the ques- tions on these subjects may require an elementary acquaintance with Comparative Anatomy and Physiology. The examination is partly written and partly viva voce. The subjects of the Second Examination are Surgery, including Surgical Anatomy and Pathology. The examination is partly written and partly viva voce and includes the examination of patients and the performance of operations on the dead body. The examinations are held during the months of May and November of each year. The fees for examination are : First Examination, each admission, five guineas. Second Examination, each admission, 12 guineas. Of such examination fees 17 guineas will be reckoned as part of the fee payable upon admission to the Fellowship. The fee to be paid upon admission to the Fellowship is 30 guineas, except when the candidate is a. Member of the College, in which case the fee is 20 guineas. A Member of the College is admissible to the First Exa- mination at any time after receiving his Diploma of Member- ship. A candidate who is not a member of the College is admissible to the first Professional Examination for the- Fellowship on the production of evidence of having passed the First and Second Examinations of the Examining Board. in England by the Royal College of Physicians of London.. and the Royal College of Surgeons of England (or, if a, member of a University recognised by the College for the purpose, of having passed the Examinations in his Uni- versity equivalent to the First and Second Examinations of the Board) and on the production of certificates of attend- ance upon certain courses of study described in the Regulations. A Member of the College is admissible to the Second Examination at any time after having passed the First Examination, on producing satisfactory evidence of having been engaged not less than six years in the study (or study and practice) of the profession. A candidate who is not a Member of the College must possess the registrable surgical and medical degrees re- cognised by the Council and must’ have been engaged in the study (or study and practice) of the profession for not less than four years subsequent to the date of obtaining the re- cognised qualification, one year of which shall have been spent in attendance on the Surgical Practice of a recognised hospital. The diploma of Fellow is not conferred upon successful candidates until they have attained the age of 25 years. The Regulations may be obtained on application to the- Secretary of the Examining Board, Examination Hall, Victoria Embankment, London, W.C. ROYAL COLLEGE OF PHYSICIANS OF EDIN- BURGH, ROYAL COLLEGE OF SURGEONS OF EDINBURGH, AND FACULTY OF PHYSICIANS AND SURGEONS OF GLASGOW. These Colleges have made arrangements by which, after one series of examinations, held in Edinburgh or Glasgow, or both, the student may obtain the diplomas of the three Bodies. The three Bodies grant their Single Licences only to candidates who already possess legal qualifications in Medi- cine or Surgery. Copies of the Regulations for the Single Licence of any of the Bodies may be had on application to the respective secretaries. The regulations which follow are for candidates who commenced study after Jan. 1st, 1892. Professional Education.-1. Graduates in Medicine of certain recognised Indian,Colonial, and Foreign universities may present themselvesfor the Final examination under special conditions whichcan be ascertained on application to the Secretary.

The examina-tion is directed partly to pathology and partly to the practiceof medicine and may be modified in circumstances to beascertained by application to the Registrar. ROYAL COLLEGE OF PHYSICIANS OF EDIN-

BURGH, ROYAL COLLEGE OF SURGEONSOF EDINBURGH, AND FACULTY OF

PHYSICIANS AND SURGEONS OFGLASGOW.

These Colleges have made arrangements by which, afterone series of examinations, held in Edinburgh or Glasgow,or both, the student may obtain the diplomas of the threeBodies.The three Bodies grant their Single Licences only to

candidates who already possess legal qualifications in Medi-cine or Surgery. Copies of the Regulations for the SingleLicence of any of the Bodies may be had on applicationto the respective secretaries. The regulations which followare for candidates who commenced study after Jan. 1st,1892.

Professional Education.-1. The candidate must producecertificates or other ’ satisfactory evidence of havingattended the following separate and distinct courses of

instruction : Physics, three months ; Elementary Biology,three months; Chemistry, six months ; Practical or

Analytical Chemistry, three months ; Anatomy, during atleast six months ; Practical Anatomy, twelve months ; Physi-ology, six months ; Materia Medica, three months;Pathology (including Practical Pathology), six months ;Practice of Medicine, six months ; Clinical Medicine, ninemonths; Principles and Practice of Surgery, six months;Clinical Surgery, nine months ; Midwifery and theDiseases of Women and Children, three months; MedicalJurisprudence and Public Health, three months. Thenumber of lectures certified as attended at any schoolnot situated in Scotland should not be less than three-fourths of the total number of lectures delivered in acourse. 2. The candidate must also produce the follow-ing certificates :-(a) Of having personally attended notless than six cases of labour, or alternatively attendanceon 12 cases of labour, at least five of these to be conductedpersonally under the direct superintendence of the practi-tioner who signs the certificate, who must be a registeredmedical practitioner. (b) Of having attended, for threemonths, instruction in Practical Pharmacy; the certificateto be signed by the teacher, who must be a memberof the Pharmaceutical Society of Great Britain, or the

superintendent of the laboratory of a public hospital or dis-pensary, or a registered practitioner who dispenses medicines’to his patients, or a teacher of a class of Practical Pharmacy.(c) Of having attended for 27 months the Medicaland Surgical practice of a public general hospital contain-ing on an average at least 80 patients available forclinical instruction and possessing distinct staffs of phy-sicians and of surgeons. Evidence must be produced thatthe candidate has acted as Surgical Dresser and MedicalClinical Clerk for not less than three months in the wardsin each case. (d) Of having attended for six monthsthe practice of a public dispensary specially recognisedby any of the above authorities, or the out-patient practiceof a recognised general hospital or of having acted forsix months as pupil to a registered practitioner who eitherholds such a public appointment, or has such opportunitiesof imparting practical knowledge as shall be satisfactory tothe cooperating authorities; this attendance should bemade after the student has passed the First and Secondexaminations. (e) Of having been instructed in the Theoryand Practice of Vaccination by a Public Vaccinatorauthorised by the Local Government Board to grant certi-ficates of proficiency in vaccination and of having per-formed operations under the teacher’s inspection during aperiod of not less than six weeks.

In addition to the courses above prescribed candidates arerequired to attend the following courses : Diseases andInjuries of the Eye, three months; Insanity, three months;Infectious Diseases, three months.The curriculum lasts for five years; the fifth year should

be devoted to clinical work at one or more public hospitalsor dispensaries. The period of three years devoted to

hospital practice may include clinical instruction in specialsubjects, and should also include instruction in administra-tion of anæthetics and attendance at post-mortem examina-tions. The student’s regularity of attendance in the wardsand out-patients’ departments of the hospitals and at the

post-mortem examinations should be duly ascertained andnoted on the certificate.

Candidates shall be subjected to four professional exami-nations :

-First Examination.-The First examination shall embracethe following divisions of subjects-(1) Physics, (2) Che-mistry, including Practical Chemistry, and (3) ElementaryBiology. The fees payable for admission to the Firstexamination shall be for the whole examination, £5 ; foreach division separately, E2 lox.

Second Examination.-The Second examination shallembrace Anatomy and Physiology including Histology ;and candidates may be admitted to this examinationat the end of the second year of medical study. Thefees payable for admission to the Second examination shallbe-for the whole examination, £5, and for re-entry afterrejection, £3 for both subjects, and E2 if one of the subjectshas been passed.

Third Examination.-The Third examination shall embracePathology and Materia Medica with Pharmacy. The fees

payable for admission to the Third examination shall be-for the whole examination, R5; for re-entry in both subjects

atter rejection, £3 ; and £2 it one ot the subjects has beenpassed.

Final Examination.-The Final examination shall not betaken earlier than the end of the fifth year of studyand shall embrace the following subjects :-Medicine,including Therapeutics, Medical Anatomy, and ClinicalMedicine; Surgery, including Surgical Anatomy, Clinical

Surgery, and Diseases and Injuries of the Eye; Midwiferyand Diseases of Women and of New-born Children; andMedical Jurisprudence and Public Health. All candidatesshall be subjected, in addition to the written and oral

examinations, to clinical examinations in Medicine and

Surgery, which shall include the Examination of Patients,Physical Diagnosis, the Clinical use of the MicroscopeExamination of the Urine and Urinary Deposits, SurgicaAppliances, Bandages, Surface markings, &c. The feespayable for the Final examination shall be,-for thewhole examination, .615, for re-entry in all subjects afterrejection, R5.

Candidates who enter on the footing of having passed theearlier examination at another Board shall pay the fees inrespect of these examinations, as well as the Final examina-tion fees.

rhere are six periods of examination annually, four inEdinburgh and two in Glasgow, and candidates may presentthemselves at either examining centre irrespectively of theplace of the previous examination. The Registrar in Edin-burgh is Mr. J. Robertson, solicitor, 54, George-square; andthe Registrar in Glasgow, Mr. A. Duncan, LL.D., 242,St. Vincent-street, to whom fees and certificates must besent for the respective examinations.Note.-In applying for copies of the Regulations students

should state whether they commenced medical study beforeor after Jan. lst, 1892, a warning which it is to be hopedhas no longer much application.

ROYAL COLLEGE OF PHYSICIANS OF EDINBURGH.In addition to the diplomas granted by the Scottish Con-

joint Board the Royal College of Physicians and the RoyalCollege of Surgeons of Edinburgh grant honour diplomaswhich no longer give the right to practise professionally ifheld separately, and also grant their Single Licence tocandidates already possessing legal qualifications for pro-fessional practice.The Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh grants a

Membership and a Fellowship.Membership.-A candidate, who must be a Licentiate of

the College of Physicians or a graduate of a British or IrishUniversity and 24 years of age, is examined in medicine,therapeutics, and in any branch o; the departments ofmedicine, such as general pathology, psychology, publichealth; obstetrics, tropical medicine, or medical juris-prudence. A candidate who for 40 years haa been in thepractise of his profession may be excused any or all of theexamination. The fee for the Membership is £36 15s.,15 guineas of which will be returned to any successfulcandidate who was already a Licentiate of the College atthe time of qualifying for the Membership.

Fello7vship.-The Fellows are selected, save with rare

exceptions, from the ranks of the Members. They must be25 years of age. The fee is 64 18s.The College grants its Single Licence on terms similar

to those of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, asmentioned in the next section.

ROYAL COLLEGE OF SURGEONS OF EDINBURGH.The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh grants a

diploma of Fellowship after examination to the holders ofthe surgical degrees of diplomas of the recognised Britishexamining bodies, as well as of the holders of the surgicaldegrees of the Universities of Canada, Australia, NewZealand, and the Indian Empire. The candidates for theexamination must be 25 years of age and must have beenengaged in practice for at least two years. The examinationis of a practical nature, partly written and partly viva voce,and includes surgery and surgical anatomy, operativesurgery, and clinical practice. One optional subject canalso be taken, the range of these specialisms coveringevery branch of medicine. The fee to be paid on obtainingFellowship is f:45, f:15 of which will be returned to those whoalready hold the Licentiateship of the College. Three weeks’
