Modern table setting is a personal affair. Choosing an eclectic mix of colour, pattern and style is more personal and chic than a very formal and studied setting. Mix old with new, classic with modern, plain with patterned and colour with pure white. With Royal Copenhagen dinnerware, you can lay out the past, present and future in one setting.

The history of fine porcelain reflects the history of culture and sophistication. From the great dynasties of China to modern wedding lists, fine porcelain is and always has been held in high esteem. Strong, yet fragile. elegantly beautiful.
Royal Copenhagen’s own birth as the Royal Danish porcelain Factory was in 1775, under the protection of Queen Juliane Marie. Since the very beginning, Royal Copenhagen has formed artistry, craftsmanship and innovation into a porcelain art of uncompromising perfection.
lovely to look at. Smooth to the touch. each piece tells its own story. Some take a point of breathtaking departure from an element of tradition, finding daring new expressions through functionality. others remain largely unchanged, as fresh as they were 200 years before. porcelain-making skills are handed down from generation to generation, as are Royal Copenhagen inheritance pieces. Quality endures. history continues.
Welcome to Royal Copenhagen.

new colours are continously added to the fluted contrast range, creating a palette of colour to brighten up everyday life.
fluted contrast represents the fusion between aesthetics and practicality. the designs are stylish and modern, yet with a deep respect for royal copenhagen’s history and tradition. decorative fluting, a motif throughout the series, was first used in 1775 and has since been a distinctive feature of royal copenhagen porcelain. danish minimalism is celebrated in practical designs for daily life both inside and outside, weather permitting. fluted contrast embraces good taste, for the individual that appreciates it – a thoroughly modern bon vivant.

the turn of the Millenium. Young design student, karen kjældgård-larsen presents royal copenhagen with a bold idea: a dramatic reinterpretation of the classic Blue fluted dinnerware. her design breaks with tradition, yet the hand-painted craftsmanship is consistent. the magnification of the classic pattern creates extraordinary expressions that are still quite familiar. Blue fluted Mega is the rebirth of a legacy. With this renewal, the 1775 pattern evolves and a modern classic is born.

Beauty in an everyday setting
in fluted signature, the royal copenhagen factory stamp has been disrupted from its location underneath each piece of porcelain and amplified for all to see. the historic signature has three waves, representing denmark’s most important bodies of water; the oresund, the great Belt and the little Belt. a mighty seal of approval from old times to new places.

at Royal Copenhagen, true beauty and spirit can be found in the details: in the undulating, jagged edging of Flora Danica, the classic fluting, the delicate lace accents and the luxurious flowered motif. elements is a fresh, modern approach to a Danish classic, reaching into elegant new territory. With a witty yet respectful take on Royal Copenhagen’s two-century-old legacy, design elements have been appropriated, twisted and brought up to date, to make the elements collection a modern interpretation of old values.

elements has taken a dive into royal copenhagen’s treasure chest to create fresh design expressions for modern living. in louise campbell’s groundbreaking design, elegant lace accessories are borrowed from flora danica and half-lace, while classic Blue fluted lends its grooves for the occasion. in pure white porcelain, this unexpected use of familiar royal copenhagen elements gives each piece a subtle yet distinctive style. use White elements as a backdrop to Multicoloured elements and Blue elements, mixing and matching to create a unique expression.

1/ The Design process ideas for new royal copenhagen products can come from many sources. often they are inspired by heritage designs that are hundreds of years old in a unique process of design evolution.
But new life is breathed into our products through creative collaborations with designers and artists throughout the whole development process, from concept to final decoration.
Bringing an idea to life is also a process of testing for royal copenhagen products and many things can go wrong in the process. Which is why the final results, the pieces that exist are fine examples of the highest quality craftsmanship.
2/ First Thoughts an idea strikes and is sketched or created by the designer/artist. this first form is considered and submitted, the first step in a lengthy process.
3/ Taking Shape the sketch is then modelled in 3d on a computer and from that design, a fragile first model is created by a 3d printer. this printing process, which can take up to a day, lays ultra-thin layers of porcelain over each other until the form takes shape.
50 51
4 5 7
6 8
4/ Fine-tuned by handBut it’s the human modeller that perfects the mould, grinding out irregularities and errors and this process can take up to a month, even for the most experienced and educated modeller. all those small details, the ripples and flutes take time, patience and a steady hand…
5/The original Modelan original mould is created from this first model, by way of a computer-controlled milling machine in a process that can take up to three days.
6/ liquid porcelainin open casting, liquid porcelain is carefully poured into dry moulds that absorbs the moisture leaving a shell. When this shell is a certain thickness, the excess liquid porcelain is poured away.
7/ The newly-moulded productthe new item is removed from the mould and any joints and edges are removed and lovingly polished smooth.
8/The Final Touchthe porcelain is still fairly moist and fragile at this point, which is the perfect opportunity for retouching and garnishing with handles and decorations. a sure and steady hand is needed to swiftly affix these details to the piece, before it is dried and fired.
52 53
9
10
11 12
13
9/ The Signature blueroyal copenhagen’s signature cobalt blue pigment can withstand extremely high temperatures, so is applied prior to the final glazing and firing. this process makes the colour and the item more robust and able to withstand dishwashing etc.
10/ painting the porcelainafter preheating, the porcelain remains fragile with a porous and absorbent surface. this is the point that the painters set to work illustrating the porcelain. With brushes made from the delicate fibers from cows’ ears or reindeer belly, they carefully and painstakingly paint on the lines, flowers and patterns that are so characteristic of royal copenhagen craftsmanship.
11/ glazingafter this, a thin, light-blue glaze is applied. it is this glaze that reacts with the porcelain clay to create a thin, glossy layer that highlights the beauty and structure of each piece of royal copenhagen porcelain.
12/ Firing the porcelainthe product is now fired at nearly 760 degrees celcius and undergoes a shrinking process losing up to 14% of its size. Many pieces are lost during this final firing; one in five items may be discarded after this step.
13/ The Final productit’s a long process but finally, the product is ready. it may only have taken a few months but via a process of craftsmanship that has evolved over 235 years at royal copenhagen. Which is why when you buy a piece of royal copenhagen, you are also buying a piece of danish history, craft and design.

luxuRy liVeS on…dating from the golden age of porcelain in the 18th century, the flora danica service is one of the world’s most prestigious and precious dinner services in production today.
at that time porcelain was an extremely precious commodity, considered “white gold”. ultimately, the service remained in den-mark and became the heritage of danish kings. flora danica was first used at birthday banquet for the king himself in 1803. ever since, this royal service has been used only on ceremonial occa-sions, including royal birthdays and weddings, visits by foreign monarchs and banquets held for the opening of the high court and the investiture of knights.
a boTaniCal MaRVel by Johann ChRiSToph bayeR acclaimed porcelain painter, Johann christoph Bayer took on the immense task of creating the flora danica service, a job that be-
came his life’s work. With distinctive and sensitive brush strokes, he copied the copperplates of over 700 nordic wild plants taken from the flora danica encyclopedia and painstakingly hand-painted them onto the precious porcelain.
1,503 pieCeS haVe SuRViVeD the remaining part of this service still graces the royal table of Queen Margrethe ii on state occasions at christiansborg Palace in copenhagen. a STuDy oF ouTSTanDing inDiViDualS flora danica is as admired today as it was when it was first pro-duced, although culture and taste have changed a great deal since then. flora danica speaks to us across the ages. one never tires of studying the service, because each and every piece is deco- rated with an individual and highly articulated plant – complete with flower, leaves, stem, root and fruit.
The DaniSh peopleS' giFT the danish Peoples' gift to crown Prince frederik of denmark and his fiancée, Miss Mary donaldson, when they married on May 14th, 2004, was a flora danica dinner service with plates and cups bearing the young couple's new monogram, designed by Queen Margrethe ii of denmark, mother of the crown Prince.
FloRa DaniCa is one of the world’s most prestigious and luxurious
porcelain collections.
…in DinneRWaRe FiT FoR RoyalTyFlora Danica’s origins were royal from birth. It was commissioned by the Danish king, Christian the VII and intended as a gift for the Empress Catherine the Great of Russia, an enthusiastic collector of porcelain.
The long and laborious process commenced in 1790 and was not finished until 12 years and 1,802 different pieces of hand-moulded and hand-painted porcelain later. To this very day Flora Danica is still moulded and painted by hand as it was more than 200 years ago.

Christmas. Royal in every sense. it was the Danish king, Christian iV who first celebrated Christmas as we know it today; with a delicious feast, presents for friends and family and an elegantly-decorated table. Star Fluted Christmas dinnerware was created with inspiration from a service that was first produced in 1895 and has graced tables ever since; from the Royal treasury to the modern home. With its elegant wreaths of pine and red ribbon bows, it is the perfect background to a joyous Christmas meal. For generation after generation.
