September witnessed the famous Goodwood Revival being held in UK, where Royal Enfi eld made

its presence felt, especially through its war-inspired marquee, vintage motorcycles, war revivalists and a newly-launched range of accessories inspired by World War II.

In September this year, Royal Enfi eld ventured into Lhasa for the second time with the Tour of Tibet. Despite adverse road and weather conditions in Nepal, the riders' perseverance paid off . The Tour of Tibet was closely followed by the Tour of Nepal, which has witnessed massive participation from Royal Enfi eld riders every year. The REunion West was held at Silvassa, Dadra and Nagar Haveli. Over 200 riders from Gujarat, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh and other neighbouring states were part of this event. Upon entering the venue, one is instantly transported back in time; women in bouff ants, beehives, polka dot dresses; the men in tweed, brogues, military uniforms

.................................................................................................

The three-day-long automotive festival, Goodwood Revival is where one can see Grand

Prix and GT cars from the 1950s and 1960s, historic saloons and celebrated motorcycles on the tracks again. The visitors to this festival dress up in period costume from the 50s and 60s, adding to the charm of this event. If you are into riding at all, this magnifi cent event with its fi ne people and roaring machines should be a must on your bucket list. The festival is held close to the historic town of Chichester, when the rolling downs of West Sussex come alive for three days. The Goodwood track opened in 1948, with its last race being held in 1966, and the Revival recreates its short, but active life. Upon entering the venue, one is instantly transported back in time: women in bouff ants,

beehives, polka dot dresses; the men in tweed, brogues, military uniforms, classic mechanic overalls worn with a shirt and tie and, of course the Mods and the Rockers in their signature style. The Royal Enfi eld team blended right in with their military uniforms riffl ing off the motorcycle despatch riders of World War II: overcoats, riding breeches, combat boots in hues of olive topped up by peak hats, side-caps and berets set at a jaunty angle! The Royal Enfi eld marquee was fortuitously located with busy Goodwood High Street in the front and at the rear, a reserved parking lot packed with hundreds of classic and vintage machines. There was also a special parking space for riders who have ridden into Goodwood on their Royal Enfi eld Continental GTs from London. It served as a perfect

......................................................................

The next day, as the sun struggled to break through the overcast morning sky, the most unique automotive party on the planet—the Goodwood Revival—was already underway in full spirit. One could easily see that the crowd was visibly much more than that on the opening day and the dewy grass of the parking behind the Royal Enfi eld marquee, which was reserved for cars made before 1973 was covered with acres of evocative automotive sheet metal from Ferraris to Rolls-Royces, from tiny Motobecane mopeds to the Bonneville salt speed machines. The Gangs of Rockers and Mods mock-snarled at each other around the recreation of the Brighton Pier ambience; while Spitfi res and Hurricanes fl ew lower and lower, wingtip to wingtip with each successive fl y-by. The action on the racetrack was intense with most racers vying for bragging rights and starting position in the Sunday fi nal races. The highlight was the Goodwood tribute to Sir Jackie Stewart who had stepped into a single seater race car for the fi rst time at this

very circuit 50 years ago. Twenty nine cars from his sterling motor racing career took to the circuit for the parade laps, with Sir Jackie in the Tyrrell Cosworth 006, the car in which he won his third and fi nal Formula 1 title in 1973. Finally on Sunday, in a tribute parade 'West Sussex Goes to War', over 100 military vehicles from World War II lapped the circuit headed by Lord March accompanied by Spitfi res, Hurricanes and Lancasters fl ying overhead. The Royal Enfi eld marquee got a steady stream of visitors drawn in by the celebration of minimalistic machinery as manifested by the iconic motorcycles through the ages. David Fiddman, MD of Davida Helmets, came by and stayed a while to admire the new Royal Enfi eld apparel collection while professing his admiration for the creativity of the marquee set-up. Being Revival newbies, we did not get our fi ll of this fabulous celebration of classic cars and motorcycles, and period charm. But then, it's never too early to plan for 2015.

to unveil a preview of Royal Enfi eld's new apparel collection that takes its inspiration from the Royal Army despatch riders, the Don R’s. Royal Enfi eld's special guest to unveil the collection was the 93-year-old George Brown who was a despatch rider for the Royal Corps of Signals in World War II and the motorcycle that he rode, Royal Enfi eld 350cc WD/CO, was also on display. The fi rst day went by as a blur. Over at the paddock area, one was constantly drawn to the sound of machinery racing wheel to wheel. There were scores of Maseratis, Jaguar D-types and other series in racing paddocks that were being celebrated at Goodwood this year, the Rockers hanging tough around their cafe racers versus the Mods lolling indulgently on their scooters, lovingly maintained old aircraft that one could touch and feel parked on lush grass. As the day drew to a close, we had no doubt that the Goodwood Revival had soul, magic, authenticity and a passion that we would be back to tap again the next day.

Ride Story

Lhasa literally means the 'place of the gods' and

we embarked on this journey of a lifetime, known

for its thrills and adventures

.................................................................................................

I have always loved all the riding opportunities I have got, but it certainly had been quite a while

since I really looked forward to doing something I had never done before. Tibet fi tted the bill perfectly and the ride to Lhasa was the next adventure. Lhasa literally means ‘place of the gods’ and we embarked upon the journey to this enchanting place in early September 2014. The adventure began much before the real journey kicked in. What was supposed to be a routine ride to the border town of Kodari from Kathmandu turned out to be quite a thrilling adventure in itself and I could easily write a complete article just about that one long day itself. We faced a massive landslide that had wiped out a large section of the road a couple of days ago and we were aware that it was going to be a

tough detour. However, the worse was still to come; something I had not imagined in the wildest of my dreams. In the beginning it seemed like a mild combination of some cobblestone tracks, with some deep rutted dirt sections thrown in, on what seemed like a moderate incline! However, a few kilometers further into the road and there was nothing moderate about it anymore. The whole group was sprawled out at diff erent stages on the track with each one formulating their own strategy on how to get across every tough patch. The hot and humid weather wasn’t helping at all with even the fi ttest of us left questioning our physical abilities. We kind of involuntarily regrouped at a place on the road as we all fi nally came to a point and got stuck. Luckily we were able to commission some

remote hillside hamlet in Nepal. No one had signed up for something like this but as they say, life inevitably throws us a ‘curve ball’ so now we had to just deal with this. At around 10 pm, we luckily found a small place in a village, which served us some hot instant noodles, our only meal between breakfast which we had had at 7am and subsequent dinner at 1:30 am the next day when we fi nally reached the hotel. The next morning, the Tour of Tibet was fi nally on. A large and dreary part of the ride was waiting at the various check posts while sorting out the paperwork, from Kodari to Zhangmu to Nyalam onwards to Tingri and eventually Shigatse. Even the capital Lhasa isn’t spared of the check posts. There was customs, police and the army, which made up for the variety across the kinds of check posts. Apart from this, the ride was delightful. The roads were great; traffi c sparse and the landscape breathtaking (one just had to learn to ignore all the overhead electricity installations along the road). I wouldn’t attempt to describe it because when you go there you would

certainly end up saying, “Its way better than what Sachin had mentioned”. The road from Shigatse to Lhasa (which are the two big towns en route) is full of speed limit markers and checks which are a bit of a let-down despite the amazing road. Personally for me, the highlight of the ride was the road that ran along the high altitude lake Yamdrok and the Tibetan lifeline river Brahmaputra, which we crossed on the way from Lhasa to Gyantse, the third biggest town in this part of the world. Being very scenic and culturally rich, Tibet off ers one of the most enjoyable experiences, but one should never disregard the altitude of this place which can bring in its own set of challenges. Luckily in this ride, with the said group of people, we were perfectly fi ne. The vastness of the Tibetan plateau and the awe-inspiring view more than compensated for everything big or small that we had to endure. Apart from the journey and the destination, that is the one more reason for which I ride. So, until next time, ride safe.

large 4x4 trucks to carry us across the particular patch in question, although loading the bikes on the 'high ground clearance' trucks was no mean feat either. There was no alternative but to hitch a ride in the load bay with our bikes as we moved ahead. Even in the trucks, the going was quite tough as the vehicles struggled up the hill with the bikes jostling around, crashing into each other and on stray occasion into the odd passenger too, in quite a detrimental way. As we continued further into the late afternoon, the thundering rain compounded the condition. It was the kind of situation where people need to draw strength from each other. There were times when we wondered if it would have been faster to get down and walk – not that there were any takers for that but all that was about to change the moment we came across another truck stuck right on the road. I took a call deciding to walk rather than spend the night stuck there. So there we were, at 8 in the evening, trekking along in our fancy leather jackets, motorcycle boots and helmets on; near some

Traversing through mystic hills, meandering rivers, and clear clouds is every

motorcyclist’s dream. The much-awaited Tour of Nepal 2014 (now in its 3rd edition) off ered this and much more to the participants. The riders reached Lucknow for the ride, before setting out towards their destination. Like every other Royal Enfi eld ride, the riders and their motorcycles underwent a mandatory bike and riding gear scrutiny, after which they were briefed about the various terrains they would encounter during the course of the trip. While some were apprehensive about unfamiliar terrains, most of them were eager to begin the tour.

On the morning of October 06 2014, Lucknow woke up to the sound of a score of Royal Enfi eld motorcycles thumping away through the city, after being fl agged off from the Royal Enfi eld Brand Store. They made their way to Dhangadhi past the vast expanses of lush green fi elds and forests. Dhangadi is the headquarters of the Kailali District in the province of Seti and the largest city in the far-western region of Nepal. The documentation required at the border was all done, before entering into Nepal. The riders took a while to get used to the unbearable heat, but were rewarded by a pleasant evening. The next day, the riders were and ready on their saddles by 7am,

and were excited to know what Nepal had in store for them. Beginning the ride on tarmac, the riders waded through a big water crossing and rode through dirt trails of Bardiya National Park. The riders spent their time on a jungle safari in the afternoon, while the evening was a fun-fi lled experience around a bonfi re, where riders shared their adventures during the day. The following day was a longer 353 kms ride to Lumbini, which is famous as the birthplace of Lord Buddha. On the morning of October 09, the riders visited the beautifully preserved shrine of Buddha in Lumbini and then made their way to Chitwan, in time to see the famous sunset by the river. The evening at Chitwan ended with a party.

The next day was a much-awaited stretch, which saw riders preparing themselves for the treacherous terrain Kodari had to off er. As the paved roads came to an end, all hell broke loose with steep inclines fi lled with slush lined with deep trenches and riders had an adventurous experience navigating through these obstacles and putting to use the skills they had developed over the last few days. The ride ended quite late in the day, thanks to the taxing terrain, but the riders still woke up to a breathtaking view of the Himalayas the next morning. Early next morning, the riders also tried their hand at bungee jumping in Kodari, from a height of 160 m off a hanging bridge down to the untamed river fl owing below. Later in the day, the riders made it to Kathmandu and called it a day after reaching their destination. Since the next day was a rest day in Kathmandu, the riders partied hard until the wee hours of the morning to unwind after the day's

ride. On the rest day, the bikes had time to recover, and the riders got an opportunity to explore the vibrant city. On Day 9, the riders started the day by heading out on the road leading to the town of Pokhara. The ride to Pokhara was over 210 kms with good winding roads and some great scenery. Pokhara stands at 884 m above sea level and is a tourist’s paradise with its crystal clear lakes, magnifi cent views of the Annapurna Mountain Range and its bustling but quaint lake side bazaar. The following day was yet again fi lled with surprises. This was the day to cover the stretch to Jomsom! The day started off with some drizzling, which continued throughout the day, and the riders enjoyed the light showers. Despite the tricky weather condition and terrain, the riders rode towards Dhaulagiri and their motorcycles proved to be reliable through the treacherous terrains. Due to worsening weather conditions, the riders eventually headed to Pokhara,

with a following day of rest. It was on October 17 that the riders hit the road once again and tackled winding roads before reaching the plains of Butwal. The riders stopped by for a break at a dhaba, 50 kms before Butwal and feasted on some delicious local food. On October 19, it was day 15 of the ride and the time had come to return to Lucknow. As all good things must eventually come to an end, this ride too came to a close, as the riders arrived at Lucknow via Lakhimpur and Sitapur around 6pm. The gleam on the faces of the riders was evident. Soon it was time for the much-awaited farewell party. The certifi cates were handed out by the Royal Enfi eld offi cials, Mr Anil Goyel and Mr Sunil Kimothi amidst loud cheering and applause for all.

registration, the riders went to their rooms and rested after a long journey from each of their hometowns. The next day, on September 13, an array of fun-fi lled events revolving around the Royal Enfi eld motorcycles was the highlight of the day. The events included the popular ones like Slow Race, Carry your Bike and the Figure of 8. There was a special prize for anyone who attempted the Figure of 8 on a Continental GT, which made it even more interesting and thrilling. Arm wrestling and Beer Guzzling also witnessed huge participation. Besides these events, there was some foot-tapping music by Whirlying Kalapas with Uday Benegal as the lead vocalist. DJ Amul took over after the band performance and set the fl oor on fi re with some great

music. The next day, after a hearty breakfast, the riders all headed to their respective hometowns, with unforgettable memories of the trip.

The second edition of the Royal Enfi eld REunion West was held in Silvassa on 12th,

13th & 14th September 2014. It was a good time for Royal Enfi eld enthusiasts and riders from the western part of India to celebrate the spirit of the open roads, in the company of fellow motorcycling enthusiasts. It was an opportunity to bond with old and new friends alike, and share stories of their adventures, apart from participating in some motorcycling activities. The venue for REunion West was the famous Khanvel Resort in Chauda village at Khanvel, Silvassa. The beautiful venue overlooking a river was the perfect setting for this event. Registration counters opened on September 12 at 10 am. After

WINNERS AT REUNION WEST 2014

When you think of a trip to the theatre, you don't usually imagine gathering round

a Royal Enfi eld Bullet and sidecar and roaring with laughter at the madcap antics of three energetic thespians. Yet that’s what regularly happens when crowds gather to see ‘The Smallest Theatre in the World’. This is an elaborately decorated theatre of sardine tin proportions which is hauled around on the side of a mid-1990’s 350 Bullet. I recently visited England’s Lake District and the beautiful town of Kendal, famous for its Mint Cake, to catch up with a performance of the Smallest Theatre at the annual Mint Fest. When I arrived the company was about to launch into its fi rst

performance of ‘King Kong’. The old Bullet had a string of bananas draped over its handlebars and an enormous gorilla head placed on its seat. But on the other side, where all the action was taking place, the crowd of approximately 200 people was warming up, hooting with laughter and heckling the actors. I was soon drawn in. Bodies dived in and out of the sidecar, which for a while played its part as a ship, before King Kong emerged above it, an appearance that delighted the younger members of the audience. After the performance I caught up with Dave Danzig and Mandy Medlicott, whose theatre company the Grand Theatre of Lemmings, now owns The Smallest

Theatre in the World. “The concept for the Smallest Theatre goes back to 1971,” explains Dave. “It was originally built onto a Panther motorcycle and sidecar, which hauled it around for many years. The company toured extensively in the UK, in Europe and the USA.” It also had a number of TV appearances and those early tours pulled in some famous names, with acting legends Bob Hoskins, Michael Elphick, Jim Carter and former Dr Who, Sylvestor McCoy, all spending time in the sidecar theatre. Comedian Billy Connelly was a fan and in the US, actress Meryl Streep squeezed into the auditorium to watch a 30 minute version of Hamlet. Mandy continues: “We bought it one and a half years ago. It was in a state of disrepair

and attached to a defunct Russian Cossack motorcycle. There was no question for us that the motorcycle we should attach it to was a Royal Enfi eld.” With a warm glance towards the Bullet, Mandy confesses to having, for a number of years, an affl iction she calls ‘Enfi eld Envy’. As none of the theatre company's members are mechanically minded, an off er of help from a local RE enthusiast to service the bike was very welcome. Over the years, The Smallest Theatre’ has staged an eclectic mixture of plays, ranging from ‘Decline and Fall of the Third Reich’ to ‘Jack and the Beanstalk’ and ‘A Christmas Carol’ to ‘The Tempest.’ But their future plans will be much closer to the heart of Royal

Enfi eld fans: a trip to India is planned for early 2015. “Our goal,” explains Dave, “is to visit the Royal Enfi eld factory in Chennai and have them build us a new bike and sidecar. We will then work closely with local craftsmen to create our new Indian-style theatre.” After the Chennai visit will follow a six week Indian tour including workshops organised with street children, orphanages and local theatre companies plus a number of street art festivals. “And whatever else comes our way in terms of cultural exchanges and opportunities for sharing skills,” adds Mandy. The foundation of the ‘Enfi eld Pirates’ was laid on November 06 2011 with a few like-minded

Royal Enfi eld riders coming together to form a club, which has today grown into a well known motorcycling club spreading its wings not only in India but also across the globe. Motorcycling is often considered a solo activity, but for many riding as a group whether on a Sunday morning or over the weekend is the epitome of an exciting motorcycling experience. The Enfi eld Pirates believe in riding hard & partying harder but never compromising on safety. Contrary to popular belief, Pirates are known for travelling miles and exploring new destinations, and exhibit a rock solid character with a strong belief in brotherhood. The club has grown by leaps and bounds, thanks to the consistent eff orts of Amman Mithani & Rohan Mishra. The growth of Enfi eld Pirates Motorcycling Club (EPMC) has been slow and steady, but they are on the right track. After tasting success in Mumbai, they have spread their wings to Indore (Chapter Head

Rahul Dey Sarkar) and Ahmedabad (Chapter Head Kalpesh Mewada). The progress has been tremendous over the last three years. The Enfi eld Pirates actively participate at Rider Mania in Goa every year, and also gave tough competition to other teams during the REunion

You don’t stop riding as you age; you start aging when you stop riding,’ is the motto that Lt Col

Roy strongly believes in and stands by. The spark of riding was lit in him as a child when he used to watch his father ride a Royal Enfield to work. His first attempt to ride a motorcycle was in his early teens, when he rode his father’s bike (who was away at the time), with his mother’s consent. When he joined the Indian Army, he wished to own a Royal Enfield. As he was too thin and tall, he was dissuaded from buying it. However, he still got into motorcycling and rode a couple of other bikes, while braving and overpowering physical ailments in the process. He rode to Ladakh in June 2009 along with three other Royal Enfield riders from Bangalore and then fell in love with the motorcycle all over again. Eventually he settled for a teal

green coloured Classic 500 in 2010 and immediately after acquiring the bike, he rode out straight to Meghalaya and Nagaland and bonded with the bike on this journey. He also rode to Ladakh again in 2010 on this bike. Riding a bike was never a pastime for him, but a passion and a way of life. It was ever since his time as a young officer that he realised his passion for biking. As he continued riding and living his passion, he associated these rides with social causes. Even after having crossed to the other side of the 60s, he finds that his passion for biking has only grown stronger with each passing phase, making him test his abilities time after time and go that extra mile to ride to terrains that seem tough. These roads do not make him feel tired; instead they beckon him with renewed vigour, making him instantly feel much

more energised and refreshed. In his own words, the Royal Enfield is a motorcycle which has all-rounder qualities.
