Hi there Members of the best Art Society on the Gold Coast, Well the Film Festival Art Com- petition went off without a hitch and although the entries were not as they were last year the Opening was attended by just as many, if not more. It was great to have the happy Lord Mayor Tom Tate for the open- ing. He opened the exhibition, then gave out the Awards with a large smile on his face which relaxed the gallery. Unfortunately the win- ner Narelle Dwyer was in Sydney so could not attend but when I phoned her to give the news, she would not believe me and thought it was a hoax call. She certainly took some convincing but was over the moon. Our next BIG Member’s competi- tion is “The BIG Art Awards” which is held in June. This is a Member’s only competition and does not have a theme. The entry forms will be at the front desk as from Wed.22nd. Let’s see some fantastic work pro- duced so that the judges have a hard job selecting the category win- ners. We don’t want to see work that has been up a number of times. It may not be accepted. Now for the news that no one wants to hear which has come as quite a shock. Our Office assistant and Ar- tistic Director, Patrick McMahon, has had to resign due to ill health. He felt his duties were not helping with bad back condition that he has, and although he didn’t want to, thought it best that he did. Pat- rick is someone who gives and then gives again, would always listen, PRESIDENT’S EDITORIAL and willing to help. He will certainly be missed around the gallery. He remains a member and will be in from time to time. He is one member we all wish well for the future. As if that news isn’t bad enough. Our President, Paul McDowell has had a mini stroke caused by stress related conditions and has had to resign from his position as well. He has put in endless time at the gal- lery and has put in many hours at home as well with his I.T. knowl- edge. I know you all thank him for the time he has been your President and wish him well as he recovers. And so yours truly is now your President and although I have been ’blooded’ as Vice President over these past three years there is still a lot I have to learn. So keep your hats on while I endeavor to restruc- ture and/or implement a few things to have our gallery running smoothly once again. I still have the Newsletter job, Ellen Nolet has kindly offered to give me a hand which I may take her up on. It’s a funny job as only one can work on a computer at a time. Might have to work something out If there is anyone at all I could just hand it over to, please don’t be shy, let me know and the job is yours. Any takers? That’s about all folks, I wish you all the best in the BIG Art Awards. Hi there Members of the best Art Society on the Gold Coast,

Well the Film Festival Art Com-petition went off without a hitch and although the entries were not as they were last year the Opening was attended by just as many, if not more.

It was great to have the happy Lord Mayor Tom Tate for the open-ing. He opened the exhibition, then gave out the Awards with a large smile on his face which relaxed the gallery. Unfortunately the win-ner Narelle Dwyer was in Sydney so could not attend but when I phoned her to give the news, she would not believe me and thought it was a hoax call. She certainly took some convincing but was over the moon.

Our next BIG Member’s competi-tion is “The BIG Art Awards” which is held in June. This is a Member’s only competition and does not have a theme. The entry forms will be at the front desk as from Wed.22nd. Let’s see some fantastic work pro-duced so that the judges have a hard job selecting the category win-ners. We don’t want to see work that has been up a number of times. It may not be accepted.

Now for the news that no one wants to hear which has come as quite a shock. Our Office assistant and Ar-tistic Director, Patrick McMahon, has had to resign due to ill health. He felt his duties were not helping with bad back condition that he has, and although he didn’t want to, thought it best that he did. Pat-rick is someone who gives and then gives again, would always listen,

PRESIDENT’S EDITORIAL

and willing to help. He will certainly be missed around the gallery. He remains a member and will be in from time to time. He is one member we all wish well for the future.

As if that news isn’t bad enough. Our President, Paul McDowell has had a mini stroke caused by stress related conditions and has had to resign from his position as well. He

has put in endless time at the gal-lery and has put in many hours at home as well with his I.T. knowl-edge. I know you all thank him for the time he has been your President and wish him well as he recovers.

And so yours truly is now your President and although I have been ’blooded’ as Vice President over these past three years there is still a lot I have to learn. So keep your hats on while I endeavor to restruc-ture and/or implement a few things to have our gallery running smoothly once again.

I still have the Newsletter job, Ellen Nolet has kindly offered to give me a hand which I may take her up on. It’s a funny job as only one can work on a computer at a time. Might have to work something out

If there is anyone at all I could just hand it over to, please don’t be shy, let me know and the job is yours. Any takers?

That’s about all folks, I wish you all the best in the BIG Art Awards. There is prize money up for grabs in that and also in the Special theme for August, courtesy of David and Sandra Ladley, thanks guys.

Smile out loud, & …..

Keep those brushes wet, there’s money to be won,

‘Why do I paint?’ – My personal

answer to this question is that I

am not too sure. All I can say is

that I have a need to paint and

have always had the motivation to

do so.

Artists are always inspired by

Great Artists and if I named all

the ones that inspire me, my list

would be long. However

if I name just a couple

who have influenced me

I would have to say that the Artist

that inspires me the most is Pi-

casso. What I love about his work

is that he paints not what he sees,

but what he feels and how he in-

terprets what he has seen. Picasso

was quoted as saying “There is no

abstract art. You must always

start with something. Afterward

you can remove all traces of real-

ity”.

Another Artist that I am inspired

by is Austrian painter Gustav

Klimt. I love his eclectic and often

fantastic Art Nouveau style; the

richness of colour and his elaborate

patterns are so illustrative with a

suggestion of Byzantine, Greek and

Egyptian art motifs. The lushness

is delicious.

My belief is that when an Artist of-

fers their work to the world, they

are offering a peek into their inner

selves. For when we paint it is to

free our soul. Words do

not matter, it is the colour

and movement and how

the paint ends up on the canvas,

that tells the story. As we work,

our deep seated sub conscious

comes to life and we are often sur-

prised with the end result.

Sometimes we think we know what

we are going to paint at the begin-

ning but as the work evolves and

we go through the process, the end

result is totally different to what

was planned. Yet other times we

don’t know what the painting is

going to be, yet we start painting

anyway - and the outcome becomes

SUE BIANCHI *** Member # 3428 *** ‘Why do you paint’

Other times we don’t know

something you always imagined it

would be.

Like Picasso, for me the fun is not

painting things that you see

around you the way they are –

within the confined dimensions

of space-time, but in creating an

image that is an experience – I

call it ‘tasting with your eyes’.

Myself, once I have finished a

piece of art, I am finished with it

and can’t wait to move on to the

next one. So I put my art out

there with the hope that someone

will ‘adopt’ it. To help with this I

have recently started a little Shop

on-line which is exciting. When

someone buys a piece, I am grate-

ful and glad that it is appreciated

and has found a happy home and

when I make a sale I am ener-

gised to replace and create. I get

so excited that I can hardly sleep

and I need to start painting again.

MEMBER PAINT-IN DAY

Catswingers” ”Every Friday $5 No Tutor

All members are welcome Bring lunch and

something for the morning tea table.

‘ WHY DO YOU PAINT ’ articles are wanted for future Newsletters. By you putting pen to paper (email) you

could write an interesting episode about yourself. Why not give it a go? Surprise yourself as well as others.

Long term Members who have been

members for some time, must have noticed the changes in procedures over the years, the eftos, the receipting, etc. and find at times that it takes some

keeping up with. As you all know we have an ’Induction Course’ for New Members. This is not just for the new members, it is a course which has been put together so as we can all keep up to date with the running of the gallery and make things

much easier for us to do this. So don’t be shy about this Induction Course. You

will find by going along to one of these (which will only take a little of your time), that when you are

on Duty everything will run smoothly and without a worry in the world.

= Making the ROSTER TIME go faster = Think of it as being your own business.

1* Talking with the visitors and giving out the “Peoples Choice” slips.

2* Sweeping the gallery and foyer floor as well as outside the entrance.

3* Checking to see that paintings are level. 4* Phoning next days Duty Person and tidying

the front desk. 5* Some windows may need cleaning. Thanks

THE new INDUCTION COURSE Is held upstairs in the Peter Abraham Studio Gallery
