Programmes of Study
The Royal University of Bhutan
October 2013
1
Preface
Since the establishment of the Royal University of Bhutan in 2003 through the amalgamation of tertiary education offered from various locations across the country, the first priority for the academic programme was either to adopt the existing programmes after fulfilling quality assurance of programme development as prescribed under the Royal University of Bhutan, or to initiate development of new award bearing programmes after subjecting to academic screening processes something similar to GNHC screening tools. Through the years, several programmes are adopted and validated, reviewed internally and also through engagement of external examiners and consultants. Some award programmes have become obsolete in context to present need assessments and have discontinued while relevant programmes continue to be offered. At the same time, new programmes are developed and introduced.
This booklet contains the synopsis of historical development of academic programmes offered at various University campuses with a brief statement of the intention of the programme being offered, the curriculum structure with details of modules offered at various levels, the duration taken for each academic programme and the current status of programme either continued or discontinued.
The intention of this booklet is to serve four target groups namely - the prospective students, the university faculty, the general public and the potential employers. Although this booklet does not elaborate the contents of the module of each academic programme, it is expected firstly, to give some sense of study focus that enables the prospective and aspiring pre-service and in-service candidates to choose the academic programme of their choice and calibre. Secondly, by nature of distributed University campus across the country in different curriculum areas, quite often University faculty members themselves do not get access to information of programmes offered from each University campus. Consequently, some modules that look similar (for instance Dzongkha, Research Methods, Environmental Science and many more) are developed specific to the each programme needs (natural science, business, education, language, engineering, health science, physical and life science and so on) which could have either adapted instead of developing a new module. Through the access of information from this booklet, the University faculty members are expected to get encouraged to collaborate among University
2
campuses, initiate peer review and standardize the curriculum content of same module so that it leads to improvement our University academic programmes. Thirdly, this booklet is to serve as a source of information to the general public in guiding, counselling and deciding University education in Bhutan for their children, grandchildren, relatives and friends by looking at the wide opportunities of higher education leading to as many as ninety awards under the aegis of the Royal University of Bhutan including an affiliate College. Finally and most importantly, dissemination of such synopsis of curriculum structure is expected to provide insight of graduate academic calibre and assist in human resource planning processes by the potential employers. This is particularly pertinent to know the focuses of study areas as the new academic programmes are being launched catering to the growing new job markets.
This booklet being the first of its kind will be reviewed and updated regularly to provide correct information on academic programmes offered by the Royal University of Bhutan. The readers are encouraged to provide feedback for improvement if it serves the intention of this booklet publication.

Academic Programmes Offered by the Royal University of Bhutan
The Royal University of Bhutan offers programmes leading to awards at various levels: Diploma, Degree, Honours Degree, Postgraduate Certificate, Postgraduate Diploma and Master Degree. All programmes leading to an award of the University are subject to validation, periodic review and annual monitoring in addition to other basic elements of quality assurance. Since the establishment of the Royal University of Bhutan in 2003, several new programmes have been validated and existing programmes adopted.
The modes of study applied for completion of RUB award bearing programmes are mainly through full-time and part-time study. Full-time study means that every semester of the programme should have at least 15 weeks of teaching during which learners should complete at least 60 credits of study at the undergraduate and postgraduate level and should be completed within the prescribed period of registration by learners. Part-time study means that a programme has less than 60 credits per semester where a semester is more than 15 weeks of teaching and the programme can use technology to deliver programmes from a distance, can have residential schools, can be taught during evenings and weekends and/or combinations of these.
The following sections briefly outline the University award programmes offered at various campuses, the broad purpose and intention of the programme, the curriculum structure with duration and status at various university campuses. The distance of each campus in Kilometre (KM) is taken from reference to capital city Thimphu, Bhutan.
