Royal Wade was a son of John Utley Wade and Alice Woodrum of Goochland and Franklin counties, Virginia. (The Douglas Register, William Douglas, edited William Macfarlane Jones, J. W. Fergusson and Sons, Richmond, VA, 1928). Rachel (Rachael) Jones was a daughter of John and Mary (Rentfro?) Jones, who moved to Woodford County, Kentucky, from Franklin County, Virginia, before 1790. (Data of Mildred Christie Barnes, Mesa, AZ, 1975; Woodford County tax lists, microfilm boxes 57 and 58, Kentucky Historical Society, Frankfort, KY.)

The birth and baptismal dates for Royal Wade appear in the register kept by the Reverend William Douglas of Goochland County, Virginia, from 1750 to 1797:

John Utley Wade & Ellis Woodrum a son named Ryal born Jul: 10 1766. Baptized Oct: 16 1766. p. 75.

Royal Wade and Rachel Jones were licensed to marry in Franklin County, Virginia, on

24 February 1791, with John Hale as surety on their bond. (Marriage Bonds of Franklin County, Virgina, 1786-1858, Marshall Wingfield, 1939, reprinted Genealogical Publishing Company, Baltimore, 1973.)

The births of their children were recorded in a Wade family Bible (Possessed by Dorothy Ellis Hedges, Bagdad, KY, transcribed by Ronald Harrod, Bagdad, 1976.) The Bible is an Alexander's Stereotype Edition, published by C. Alexander and Company, Athenian Building, Franklin Place, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in 1834. It has not been determined to whom it originally belonged, who made the entries or how it descended to Ruth Duncan Ellis, who gave it to her daughter Dorothy Ellis Hedges, but it is reasonable to assume that Ruth received it from her mother Martha Wade Duncan, who was a daughter of William Wade and Louisa Crook Johnson. The Bible also contained the birth and death dates for Louisa Johnson Wade, and a loose-leaf birth record for the family of her parents Jones Johnson and Polly Crook of Madison, Shelby and Franklin counties, Kentucky.

While residing in New York City and visiting Bagdad, soon after receiving the transcript of the Bible entries from Ronald Harrod in 1976, this compiler telephoned Mrs. Hedges for permission to see and photograph the Bible. She reluctantly agreed, but when he arrived at her home, shortly after calling, she did not answer the door, apparently, as has been suggested by other relatives in the Bagdad area, uneasy about admitting strangers into her house and being a jealous guardian of the Bible. Ronald Harrod, also a Wade descendant, described the Bible as “very old & rotten and moths have eaten part of it.” It measured about 12 by 8 inches. The front cover was missing and the back cover was “very stiff” leather. Some of the pages appeared to be missing from when he saw it some fifteen years earlier, while it was in the possession of Ruth Duncan Ellis. Most of the upper third of the family record page, containing the family of Royal Wade and Rachel Jones, is missing because of a diagonal tear that carried away the names of the first four entries, which probably included the parents, since the first remaining notation is the day and year of the birth of their first child Mary Wade in 1794:

The following entries were written by two or three different hands in various places in the Bible:

Martha Ellen Wade & W. D. Duncan were united by Thomas Daniel at William Scrogins on this 18th day of Sep. 1877 in presence of James R. Duncan and G. F. Duncan

The birth entry for Martha Ellen Wade was copied erroneously as Mary Ellen in the Harrod transcript, which Ronald later verified.

Ronald Harrod described the Johnson family record as a very old and fancy paper, not part of the Bible, but in it. He misread the name Jones Johnson as James Johnson and the middle initial of William Logan Johnson as J., but they are given correctly here for

The parents of Thomas Wade, who married Mary “Polly” Wade, daughter of Royal Wade, on 03 June 1813, have not been determined. Royal Wade was security on their bond and the minister was Abraham Cook, who preached at Indian Fork Baptist Church in Shelby County (Shelby County, Kentucky, Marriages, 1792-1833, Eula Richardson Hasskarl, Ada, OK, 1985; Shelby County Marriage Book 1, page 79.)

Rebecca Miles, who married Royal Arial Wade, was a daughter of Enos Miles and AnnBohannon who came to Kentucky from Franklin County, Virginia. She was born in Virginia about 1794. (Data of Mildred Christie Barnes; vertical file Miles, Kentucky Historical Society, Frankfort.) Royal Miles, Jr. and Rebecca Miles, daughter of Enos (Enoch) Miles, were married on 14 September 1820 by Abraham Cook, with Samuel Miles as bondsman and witness. (Shelby County, Kentucky, Marriages, 1792-1833; Shelby County Marriage Book 1, page 165.)

Sarah “Sally” Wade and Jubal Lee were married on 04 May 1817, with her father Royal Wade as bondsman. Sally apparently died before 23 September 1833, when Jubal Lee married Catherine Raredin, a widow, in Shelby County. Joseph Ellis was surety on the bond. (Shelby County, Kentucky, Marriages, 1792-1833.)

Theophilus Brawner and Rachel Wade were married on 09 November 1820, with RoyalWade, father of the bride, as bondsman. (Shelby County, Kentucky, Marriages,1792-1833.)

Samuel Miles, who married Susannah Wade, was a son of John Miles and Elizabeth Jones. (Data of Mildred Christie Barnes.) Elizabeth Jones Miles was a sister of Rachel Jones Wade, so Samuel and Susannah were first cousins. On 03 August 1813 Samuel Miles married (1) Sarah Miles, daughter of Enos Miles and Ann Bohannon, with Israel Christie as security on the bond. (Shelby County, Kentucky, Marriages, 1792-1833.) Sarah, who was a sister of Rebecca Miles who married Royal Arial Wade, and Samuel were first cousins, also. When Samuel Miles married (2) Susannah Wade on 13 November 1847, her brother Anderson Wade was bondsman (Shelby County, Kentucky, Marriages, Volume II, Eula Richardson Hasskarl, Ada, OK, 1985.) Susannah Wade Miles died on 20 October 1862 and is buried in the cemetery at Indian Fork

Baptist Church in Shelby County. Her marker gives her birth date as 22 July 1820, contrary to her birth date of 02 July in the Bible. (Cemeteries of Shelby County, Kentucky, Shelby County Historical Society, Shelbyville, 1979). After Susannah's death, Samuel Miles married (3) Margaret Wade, her spinster sister, on 10 November 1863: (Shelby County, Kentucky, Marriages, Volume II.)

Samuel Miles, Sr., of Shelby County; age 67, born Woodford County, Kentucky; father and mother born Virginia; 3rd marriage; and Margaret Wade of Shelby

County; age 26, born Shelby County; 1st marriage; bond by T. A. ------

This transcript gives the age of Margaret Wade as 26 but the actual bond gives it as 56 (Shelby County, Kentucky, Marriage Book 9, page 2956.) Born in 1805, Margaret actually was 58 in 1863.

Identified in her marriage license as being born in Shelby County, Margaret Wade apparently was the first of the children of Royal Wade and Rachel Jones to be born there. They were in Woodford County, Kentucky, from 1793 (Woodford County, Kentucky, Deed Book B, page 329). After Polly was born on 28 April 1805, Royal and Rachel were identified as residents of Shelby County on 05 August 1805, when they sold their Woodford County land. (Shelby County, Kentucky, Deed Book C1, page 473.)

The parents of America Cheatham, who married Anderson Wade on 14 July 1831 inSpencer County, Kentucky, are not known. James Peter was bondsman. (Spencer County, Kentucky, Marriages and Vital Statistics, Volume I, Eula Richardson Hasskarl, Ada, OK, 1979.)

Mary “Polly” Anne Johnson, the second wife of Anderson Wade, was a daughter of Jones Johnson and Polly Crook and a sister of Louisa Crook Johnson, who married his brother William Wade. James A. Wade was surety for Anderson and Polly, who were married on 01 September 1847. (Shelby County, Kentucky, Marriages, Volume II.) A son of Royal Arial Wade and Rebecca Miles, James A. Wade married Sarah Christie, daughter of Israel and Elizabeth Cook Christie, on the next day, 02 September. Samuel Miles was bondsman (Shelby County Marriage Book 6, page 1623).

About 1840, Isaac Wade, son of Royal Wade and Rachel Jones, married Eleanor Barnhill, daughter of Robert Barnhill. (Vertical file Wade, Kentucky Historical Society, Frankfort.). Her mother was Alyce Ellender “Ellie” Adams. (Data of A. Virgil Barnhill, Jr., POB 22621, Knoxville, TN 37933, 24 Jun 1998, obtained from David Lee Barnhill, Ottumwa, IA.) Robert Barnhill and Alcey Adams were married on 06 April 1811 in Shelby County, Kentucky. Alcey’s father was dead and her step-brother Josiah Boone III was surety on the bond. (Shelby County, Kentucky, Marriages, 1792-1833.). Alcey Adams Barnhill was a daughter of Ephriam Adams and Elenor Ellender Bryan. Elenor Ellender Bryan Adams married (2) Josiah Boone, Jr. (See addenda for Barnhill and Bryan charts.)

Robert Barnhill’s brother James Barnhill married Hannah Boone, daughter of Josiah Boone, Jr. and Hannah Hite, in 1800. Hannah was born at Fort Boonesborough on 01

November 1786 and died on 28 January 1862. James Barnhill was born on 18 August 1780 and died on 01 January 1825. For a short time after their marriage, James and Hannah lived at Boonesborough, then they moved to Shelby County near Lynch’s Fort, before going to the part of Henry County, Kentucky, that became Oldham County. In 1824 they went to Daviess County, Kentucky. (Quotation from a history of Daviess County, published in 1855, The Boone Family, Hazel Atterbury Spraker, Rutland, VT, 1922, reprinted Genealogical Publishing Company, Baltimore, 1974.) Lynch’s Fort was originally known as the Painted Stone Station or Squire Boone’s Station. In 1779, Daniel Boone’s brother, Squire Boone, Jr., erected a fort at the Painted Stone on Clear Creek, where Shelbyville now stands. About 1783 Squire Boone transferred it to Colonel Lynch and it became known as Lynch’s Station. (History of Shelby County, Kentucky, George L. Willis, Sr., Shelby County Genealogical and Historical Society, Shelbyville, 1929, reprinted Cook and McDowell publications, Hartford, KY, 1979.)

Robert and James Barnhill were sons of Robert Barnhill, Sr. and Rachel Ann Harper (Hooper). Robert, Sr. was the son of William Barnhill, Sr., who reputedly was born in County Antrim, Ireland, and migrated to America where he settled in Orange County, North Carolina, where he died in 1791 as “an old man.” (Data of A. Virgil Barnhill, Jr., POB 22621, Knoxville, TN 37933, 24 Jun 1998, obtained from David Lee Barnhill, Ottumwa, IA.)

Josiah Boone, Sr., who was born 06 January 1725/26 in Exeter, Berks County, Pennsylvania, and died in 1814 on Glen Creek in Woodford County, Kentucky, was a son of George Boone IV and Deborah Howell, and a first cousin of Daniel Boone. He married (1) Hannah Henton, daughter of George Henton and Persis Boone, on 30 June 1750 in Amity, Pennsylvania, by whom he had Jeremiah Boone (b. 1747 PA), George Boone (b.1751 PA), Allison Boone (b. 1753 in Exeter, Berks County, PA; d. young) and Josiah Boone, Jr. (b. 1758 PA). He married (2) Hannah Hite in Augusta County, Virginia, and had Noah Boone (b c1767 VA), Deborah Boone (b 1769 VA), Allison Boone (b. 1770), Ruth Boone, Hannah Boone and Ruhemah Boone.(E-mail data of Nancy Stine >[email protected]<)

Josiah Boone, Sr. lived in Exeter and Robeson townships in Pennnsylvania. His birth date is also reported as 06 March or 17 March 1727 in Spraker’s The Boone Family. He was condemned in the Minutes of the Exeter Meeting for a “disorderly” marriage on 30 May 1750, a month before he married Hannah Henton, who was not of the Quaker religion.

The will of Josiah's father, George Boone IV of Exeter, was dated 18 November 1753 and proved in Berks County, Pennsylvania, 24 December 1753. The will contained a legacy to Josiah: “Thirdly, I bequeath to my beloved son Josiah the sawmill in Robeson Township.” Berks County tax records show Josiah continuing to live in Robeson for the 1754 and 1760 tax years. He was on the list of Removals from the Exeter Meeting in the following entry, “6-24-1762, Josiah Boone to Bradford, M.” Shortly afterward, he moved from Pennsylvania to Virginia, probably following the death of his wife. It was here that he met and later married Hannah Hite in 1766. He was living at Linville Creek,

Rockingham, Virginia in 1768. [E-mail data of Bruce Sharpe >[email protected]< from Nancy Stine.]

Mary Fitzsimmons, who married Josiah Wade on 14 July 1836, was a daughter of Patrick Fitzsimmons. William Thorp was surety on their marriage bond. Josiah was dead by 26 December 1844, when his widow Polly Wade married Richard Sanford. William Roberts was bondsman. (Shelby County, Kentucky, Marriages, Volume II.)

Thurza Rodgers, who married Squire Wade, was a daughter of George Rodgers (Rogers) and Elizabeth Pearson of Shelby County. Mrs. Elizabeth Rogers, widow, married William Christie on 12 February 1834. John Pearson, brother of Elizabeth, was surety on the bond. Squire Wade and Thurza Rodgers were married on 17 December 1834. William Christie, step-father of Thurza, secured the bond. On 25 February 1836 Mahala Rogers, daughter of George Rogers, deceased, married William J. Hughes. William Christie, step-father of Mahala, was surety on the bond. (Shelby County, Kentucky, Marriages, Volume II.)

William Wade and Louisa Crook Johnson were married in Franklin County, Kentucky, on 24 October 1844 by Abraham Cook. (Franklin County, Kentucky, Marriage Book 2, page 30.) On 13 February 1845 Louisa and William Wade were described as heirs of Jones Johnson in a Shelby County, Kentucky, deed. Polly Johnson, widow of Jones Johnson, deceased, Logan Johnson, Polly Johnson, William Wade, Louisa Wade, Elizabeth Carr, Abraham Christie and Sarah Christie, legal heirs of Jones Johnson, sold land in Shelby County. The widow Polly Johnson, her son Logan Johnson, her daughter Polly Johnson, who later married Anderson Wade, her son-in-law William Wade and her daughter Louisa Wade were described as residents of Franklin County (Shelby County, Kentucky, Deed Book O2, pages 116-118).

As a resident of Franklin County, Virginia, Royal Wade bought 391 acres there, from his father-in-law John Jones, who also lived in Franklin County, Virginia, for 13 pounds, on 01 February 1789. The tract was adjacent to land of Thomas Jones, on branches of Turners and Nicholas creeks. The deed, witnessed by David Barton, Thomas Jones, Jr. and Thomas Ruble, was proved by John and Mary Jones in Franklin County Court on 02 August 1789 (Franklin County, Virginia, Deed Book 2, page 8). On 30 July 1791 Royal Wade of Franklin County, Virginia, sold this land to Conrad Plaster of the same place for the same price, 13 pounds. Witnessed by Thomas Jones, Jr., Randolph Hall and Henry Jones, the deed was proved in Franklin County Court by Royal Wade and his wife Rachel on 01 August 1791 (Franklin County, Virginia, Deed Book 2, page 247).

Land lying on the watershed of both Turners and Nicholas creeks probably was situated near present Route 752, west of Ferrum, Virginia, and north of Route 40. The streams drain a hill that rises to 2100 feet above sea level. Turners Creek is north of the hill and runs east to join the Pigg River. Nicholas Creek is south of the hill and flows south to Philpott Reservoir, a lake formed by the damming of Smith River. (U.S. Geological Survey Topographic Map, 1973.)

Royal and Rachel Jones Wade moved to Woodford County, in the District of Kentucky,

Glenns Creek rises near Versailles, Kentucky, the Woodford County seat, and flows northwest, along State Route 1659, into the Kentucky River near the Franklin County line. (Kentucky General Highway map, 1973.)

On 01 April 1807 Royal Wade acquired 157 acres, on Six Mile Creek in Shelby County, from Charles Lynch for $1.00. The minimal payment suggests that there was another, more important, consideration involved, such as a familial relationship, but the basis for the price is not known. The tract adjoined lands of Abraham Cook, John Miles, Bohannon, Rogers and Plaister. With the exception of Rogers, these surnames are found with the Wades in Franklin County, Virginia. The parcel of land was part of a 2000-acre survey patented to William Dandridge and William Duvall. Lynch was represented in the transaction by William Taylor, Attorney-in-Fact. The deed was witnessed by John Rogers, Samuel Miles and Abraham Cook: (Shelby County, Kentucky, Deed Book H1, page 129.)

Indian Fork Creek rises on the west side of the North Benson Hills at the village of Consolation. Indian Fork Baptist Church, on Highway 12, between Consolation and Jacksonville, is on one of the upper runs of the stream, which flows north into Six Mile Creek, a tributary of the Kentucky River. Benson Creek drains the other side of the ridge into the river. The other streams of Shelby County run south into the Salt River (Kentucky General Highway map.) A map of Jacksonville, Precinct No. 9, Shelby County, in 1882, shows the residence of Anderson Wade south of Consolation on the road to North Benson Post Office (now Hatton), which probably was on the land of his father Royal Wade. The dwellings of A. Wade and of I. and J. Wade are near each other. One of their neighbors, across the road, was R. Rodgers. There were Cooks and

Miles nearby and Mrs. Jane Wilcoxson Bohannon, widow of William Bohannon, whose daughter Pamelia married Benjamin Scrogin, lived across the road. Walnut Grove School was situated between thehomes of R. Rodgers and Mrs. J. Bohannon. William Samuel Scrogins, son of Benjamin Scrogin and Pamelia Bohannon, and his wife Mary Edna Wade, daughter of William Wade and Louisa Crook Johnson, resided near Jacksonville. (An Atlas of Henry and Shelby Counties, Kentucky, D. J. Lake and Company, Philadelphia, 1882.)

The lands of Royal Wade and Benjamin Scrogin adjoined a tract sold in Shelby County. (Shelby County, Kentucky, Deed Book R2, page 381.)

Royal and Rachel Wade again signed their names in full to the deed whereby they sold a parcel of land on Six Mile Creek in Shelby County, containing 13 acres and 15 poles, to James Bright, for $55.00, on 15 May 1835. Neighboring land owners were Israel Christie, William Pierson and Rodgers: (Shelby County, Kentucky, Deed Book C2, page 169.)

The enumeration of Royal Wade on the 1810 Federal census for Shelby County, Kentucky, does not coincide correctly with the family records in the Wade Bible: (Federal Census Microcopy 252, Roll 8, page 209.)

(Anderson?) (Susannah) (Margaret)

This tabulation of seven children appears to leave out Sally, aged 11, and one of the three sons under 10, such as Isaac, aged 1. According to the birth records in the Bible, Royal, Sr. would have been 44 in 1810; Rachel would have been 34; and they would have had nine children, Polly, 16, Royal, Jr., 13, Sally, 11, Rachel, Jr., 9, Susannah, 8, John, 7, Margaret, 5, Anderson, 2, and Isaac, 1.

The account of the family of Royal Wade on the 1820 census for Shelby County is more accurate: (Federal Census Microcopy 33, Roll 24, page 174, line 26.)

Royal Wade 1 M 45+ 1 F 45+ (Rachel) 2 M 18-26 (Royal Jr) 2 F 16-26 (Rachel Jr) (?) (Susannah) 1 M 16-18 (John) 2 F 10-16 (Margaret) 2 M 10-16 (Anderson) (Eliza) (Isaac) 3 M -10 (Josiah) (Squire) (William)

The identity of the second male aged 18-26 is not known. Polly and Sally Wade were married by 1820.

Since Polly Wade, who married Thomas Wade in 1813, would have been 26 in 1820, it appears that she died before the 1820 census was taken, after having four children between 1814 and 1820, unless she was entered in the 45 and over column in error: (page 174, line 38.)

Thomas Wade 1 M 26-45 1 F 45+ (?) 4 M -10 (?)

Polly probably was dead, and the older woman probably was someone helping Thomas care for his young sons, because on 01 March 1825 Thomas Wade married Nancy Patton (Shelby County, Kentucky, Marriages, 1792-1833.) Since there appears to have been only one Thomas Wade in Shelby County at this time, this scenario is logical, but it has not been proved that this marriage applies to the husband of Polly Wade.

Jubal Lee was registered on the same sheet as Royal Wade and Thomas Wade: (page 174, line 10.)

Jubal Lee 1 M 26-45 1 F 16-26 (Sally) 1 M -10 (?) 1 F -10 (?)

Patrick Fitzsimmons, father of Mary who married Josiah Wade in 1836, was entered just before Jubal Lee: (page 174, line 9.)

Royal Wade, Sr. was entered as Uriah Wade on the 1830 census, covering the area ofShelby County north of the road from Louisville to Frankfort: (Federal Census Microcopy 19, Roll 41, page 264.)

This indicates that John, Anderson and Isaac Wade left home, or died, between 1820 and 1830. The 1830 Kentucky census index does not include either Anderson or Isaac Wade and there is no John Wade of residence in or near Shelby County. (Kentucky 1830 Census Index, Dora Wilson Smith, Heritage House, Thomson, IL, 1974.) There is no knowledge of the adult life of John Wade, so perhaps he died young. Anderson Wade, who married America Cheatham in Spencer County in 1831, probably was living with an employer in 1830. Isaac Wade apparently married Eleanor Barnhill before 1840. They lived in Indiana, where they had children from about 1841 until 1849, before going to Iowa, where they resided in Yellow Springs Township, Des Moines County, in 1850: (The Wade Quarterly, Volume 3, Issue 2, Evelyn Wade, Llano, TX, September 1976.)

Isaac Wade 40 M Laborerborn KY Elanor Wade 28 F KY William Wade 2 M IN Sarah Wade 7 F IN James Wade 5 M IN Mary Wade 3 F IN Eliza Jane Wade 1 F IN

As the first child listed, the age of William must be incorrect. Perhaps it should be 9 instead of 2. This would give him a birth date of 1841, which would fit the age of Eleanor Wade who would have been 19 in 1841. Born about 1822, she probably did not marry Isaac Wade before 1840. Robert Barnhill and Isaac F. Wade are on the 1840 Indiana census index in Montgomery County (pages 695 and 815).

Rachel Wade, Jr. married Theophilus Brawner in 1821, but his name also does not appear in the 1830 census index for Kentucky.

Thomas Wade and his second wife seem to be in Oldham County, Kentucky, in 1830.Oldham was formed in 1824 from parts of Shelby, Henry and Jefferson counties:(Federal Census Microcopy 19, Roll 40, page 289.)

Page 14: ROYAL WADE 36. ROYAL WADE Born 10 Jul 1766 ...wgscroggins.kueber.us/Wade2_Royal.pdfMary Edna Wade and William S. Scrogins married Jan. 25, 1866 G. F. Duncan and R. J. Wade was married

The four youngest males could be the 4 males under 10 in 1820 and the female under 5 could be a daughter born after Thomas Wade and Nancy Patton were married in 1825. Aged 26-45 in 1820, Thomas could be either of the older males.

Wesley Wade, who owned land on the Shelby-Franklin county line next to Benjamin Scrogin and was listed on the census in District 2 of Franklin County on 09 September 1850, with real estate valued at $452.00, may have been a son of Thomas and Polly Wade, who were married in 1813. Although he was enumerated as aged 39, perhaps this was another of the many age errors found in the census records: (Federal Census Microcopy 432, Roll 200, Franklin County, District 2, dwelling 514, family 519.)

Wesley Wade married Elizabeth Rogers on 11 November 1833 in Franklin County, Kentucky. (Marriage Records of Franklin County, Kentucky, 1816-1841, Volume II,Elizabeth Prather Ellsberry, Chillicothe, MO, undated.) Daniel Rogers was bondsman. If Wesley was born after 1813, he could have been one of the four males under 10 with Thomas Wade in Shelby County in 1820. In Oldham County in 1830, Thomas Wade had four males between the ages of 5 and 20 residing with him. The elder could have been Wesley Wade.

Elizabeth Wade, wife of Wesley Wade, is buried at Indian Fork Baptist Church in Shelby County. Her marker gives her birth and death dates as 30 August 1811 and 09 June 1863. Louisa (Lewize) Wade, daughter of Wesley and Elizabeth Wade, born on 08 July 1845 and died on 14 August 1850, is also interred there. (Cemeteries of Shelby County, Kentucky.)

The youngest boy, with Thomas Wade in 1830, may have been Royal Wade who married Martha Lewis, daughter of John, in Franklin County, Kentucky, on 20 April 1852. (Source missing.)

Jubal Lee was in Henry County, Kentucky, in 1830: (Federal Census Microcopy 19, Roll 37, page 273.)

The 1850 Federal census for Kentucky shows Squire Wade in Shelby County, with his wife Thurza and 4 children. The initial for his daughter Susan appeared to be a J. Interviews with older members of the Wade family in Kentucky over a period of years identified four children of Squire Wade, Susan, Billy, Cynthia Ann and Enos (Data of Earl F. Wade, Louisville, KY, 1965.) Since Thurza Rodgers had a brother named Alfred, it appears that the group of births headed by Alfred Wade, in the Wade family Bible, applies to Squire and Thurza Rodgers Wade:

Alfred Wade Dec. 8, 1835 Sally Wade Nov. 1, 1836 Jane Wade Aug. 24, 1838 William Henry Wade Jul. 19, 1840 John Berry Wade Apr. 30, 1842

William Henry Wade, born 19 July 1840, coincides with W. H. Wade, aged 11, of the 1850 census and son Billy of the chart of Earl Wade. Jane, born 24 August 1838, coincides with J. Wade, aged 12, of the 1850 census and could be Susan Jane Wade to match the Susan of Earl Wade's chart. E. Wade, aged 2 of the 1850 census could be Enos, whose birth does not appear in the family Bible. Alfred, Sally and John Berry Wade may have died before 1850.

After 21 January 1853, when he was associated with the settlement of the estate of William Bohannon (Shelby County, Kentucky, Will Book 31, page 234.), Squire Wade moved from Kentucky to Hendricks County, Indiana, where he died. Squire Wade and his wife Thurza were involved in a deed in Shelby County as heirs of her father George, probably not long after they were married: (Shelby County, Kentucky, Deed Book F2, page 92.)

Royal Wade, Sr. was enumerated in District 1, Shelby County, on 10 August 1850. Since she was not tabulated with him, wife Rachel Jones Wade must have died after the 1840 census and before the one in 1850. Unmarried daughter Margaret was still at home and son Anderson Wade was living with Royal, along with Anderson's second wife Polly Johnson Wade, her young daughter Isabella and his son Obediah by his first wife. Royal was credited with real estate worth $2000: (Federal Census Microcopy 432, dwelling 917, family 917.)

The correct initial for Enos Wade was M. He probably was named for his maternal grandfather Enos Miles. Enos M. Wade, aged 25, born in Franklin County, son of Royal and Rebecca Wade, died of consumption on 18 April 1852 in Franklin County, Kentucky. (Bluegrass Roots, Volume III, No. 3, Kentucky Genealogical Society, Frankfort, 1976.) This statement of birthplace indicates that Royal Arial Miles lived in Franklin County about 1827, after marrying Rebecca Miles in Shelby County in 1820, and before moving to Henry County, where he appeared on the 1830 census. Enos is buried in the Russell Cemetery on property owned by Ellsworth Kesler in 1978. The graveyard is on the east side of a wooded ravine that drains into Benson Creek, 800 yards from Highway 12, 3.7 miles from Bagdad on the Shelby-Franklin county line. The inscription on the badly weathered fieldstone marker is not completely legible: (Cemeteries of Shelby County, Kentucky.)

The last letter of his name and the last numeral in his birth year, shown in parentheses, were questionable. The 1 undoubtedly should have been a 7.

After the 1850 census and before 02 August 1851, James A. and Sarah Christie Wade moved from Franklin County to Gentry County, Missouri. In addition to Mary E. Wade, who was two years old in 1850, James and Sarah had at least three sons, Elza T. Wade, who was born in Gentry County, Missouri, on 02 August 1851 and later lived in Pendleton, Oregon; Israel C. Wade and A. J. Wade. (Collections for the History of the Wade Family, Stuart Charles Wade, Microfilm Reel 4; unpublished notes on 4 reels of microfilm.) As abolitionists, James and Sarah moved from Missouri to Nebraska and then, after the Civil War, returned to Missouri. Unless Mary E. Wade was named Mary Elizabeth and called Lizzie, James A. Wade and Sarah Christie also had a daughter Lizzie Wade Hardin. (Data of Earl F. Wade.) In 1876 James A. Wade, a native of Shelby County, Kentucky, lived in Daviess County, Missouri, Pattonsburg Post Office, Townships 61 and 62, Range 29 West, to where he had come in 1856. (Daviess County Atlas of 1876, quoted in Wade Waid Waide, Mrs. Jeff Wade, Jr., Bragg City, MO, 1975.)

Cynthia A. Wade, daughter of Royal Wade and Rebecca Miles, married Samuel Robertson on 03 February 1842 in Shelby County. (Shelby County, Kentucky, Marriage Book 5, page 1076.)

Susanna Jane Wade, daughter of Royal Wade and Rebecca Miles, married James Ghormley Miles, son of Samuel Miles and Hannah Ghormley, on 12 November 1850 in Franklin County, Kentucky. Samuel Miles was a brother of Rebecca Miles Wade, so the couple were first cousins. James Ghormley Miles was born on 02 July 1827 and died on 15 March 1898. Susanna Jane Wade Miles was born on 04 March 1834 and died on 12 August 1904 at Indianapolis, Indiana. (Data of Mildred Christie Barnes.)

It has been said that Royal Arial Wade may have had a daughter who married a Rogers. (Data of Earl F. Wade.) Perhaps she was Cynthia who married Samuel Robertson. Census records do not support the existence of another daughter.

On 14 October 1852 William Elza Wade, son of Royal Wade and Rebecca Miles, married Louisa Scrogin, daughter of Benjamin Scrogin and Pamelia Bohannon and sister of William Samuel Scrogins who married Mary Edna Wade, daughter of William Wade andLouisa Crook Johnson. Thomas M. Daniel performed the ceremony before witnesses William Bohannon, James Wilcoxen and James Wade. (Shelby County, Kentucky, Marriage Book 8, page 2119.)

It has not been determined when Royal Arial Wade moved from Kentucky to Indiana, but he and his brother Squire reputedly left Kentucky because they were opposed to slavery. (Hoosier Pioneers, Ethan A. Miles, Indianapolis, 1937.) Rebecca Miles Wade was born in Virginia on 08 January 1794 and died in Danville, Hendricks County, Indiana, on 30 July 1874, at the age of 80. Royal Arial Wade died in Danville on 11 March 1884, aged 87.

The date of the death of Rachel Jones Wade is not known, but she died before her husband. Royal Wade, widower, born Virginia, died on 27 August 1855, aged 87 years. (Records of Kentucky Historical Society, Frankfort.) Born on 10 July 1766, Royal would have been 89 before 27 August 1855.

Anderson Wade and William Wade were enumerated as neighbors in Shelby County on the Kentucky census, dated 29 June 1860. The real estate of each was valued at $800.00, which suggests an equal division of their father's land. The personal property of William was valued at $425.00 and that of Anderson at $400.00. Their unmarried sister Eliza, who was described as an idiot, resided with William. Their mother-in-law Polly Crook Johnson lived with Anderson: (Federal Census Microcopy 653, Roll 395, District 2, Christiansburg Post Office, dwellings 650 and 651, families 614 and 615.)

William Elza Wade was called Elzy. In his will dated 09 October 1867, William E. Wade mentions his wife Louisa and the above children, who were minors at the time. The executors were wife Louisa and her father Benjamin Scrogin. Witnesses were F. M. Bohannon, Lee Tharpe and Newton Miles. (Shelby County, Kentucky, Will Book 32,page 4.) The children were still minors when their mother married (2) James W. Harrod.

Information about the family of Anderson Wade was obtained from the genealogical charts of Earl F. Wade, grandson of Obediah Wade and Eusebia Cook. The data of Earl Wade did not include a son Fountain, who appeared on the 1860 census with Anderson and Polly Johnson Wade and probably was their child.

Obediah and Eusebia Cook Wade had issue, but a record of marriages and issue of the children of Anderson and Polly Johnson Wade has not been located.

Eusebia Neville Cook, who married Obediah Wade, was a daughter of Abraham Cook,Jr. and Hannah Miles. Hannah Miles Cook was a daughter of Enos Miles and Anna Bohannon. Obediah Wade (Waid) obtained a license to marry Eusebia N. Cook, daughter of Abraham (Abram), on 09 January 1860, with Richard J. Shannon (Shanon) as bondsman. (Shelby County, Kentucky, Marriages, Volume II.)

In his will, dated 07 March 1883 in Shelby County, Anderson Wade named his wife Mary Wade, daughter Belle Wade and sister Eliza Wade, whose name was transcribed by the court clerk in the recorded copy of the will as Elvira (Source identification not in compiler's files).

Since Anderson Wade and America Cheatham named their son Obediah, she must have been related to Obediah Cheatham who died in Spencer County, Kentucky, about 1837. In his will, dated 24 August 1836 and proved 02 October 1837, Obediah (Obadiah) Cheatham named his wife Lucy Cheatham, daughters Dolly Cheatham and Sally Russell, and son John Wesley Green Cheatham. The wife and son were named as executors. The will was witnessed by John Cochran and Thomas J. Martin who also secured the bond of administration for the executors. (Spencer County, Kentucky, Records, Volume III, Eula Richardson Hasskarl, Ada, OK, 1979.) Before Anderson Wade and America Cheatham were married in 1831, Obediah Cheatham appeared on the 1830 census for Spencer County, with daughters aged 15-20: (Federal Census Microcopy Roll 41, page 319.)

Obadiah Cheatham 1 M 60-70 1 F 50-60 (Lucy) 3 M 10-15 (John) 2 F 15-20 (Sally) (?) (America?) (?) 1 F 10-15 (Dolly)

William Cheatham, who was enumerated on the same page as aged 20-30 probably was a son of Obediah:

John Wade, son of Royal Wade, Sr., either died fairly young or, perhaps, moved from Kentucky at an early age, since nothing has been learned about him as an adult. Born in 1803, maybe he moved to Indiana, Missouri and then to Illinois. He would have been 57 in 1860 and on 29 August 1860, a John Wade, aged 58, born in Kentucky, was a resident of Adams County, Illinois, Lima Township, 2 North, 5 West. He had lived in Indiana about 1827 and in Missouri about 1834-1836. The abbreviation MS is for Mississippi today, but the previous 1850 census suggests that in this instance MS probably should be interpreted as Missouri. John Wade was blind in 1860. Thophilus Cunchaw, a farmer, aged 44, and his family resided with him: (The Wade Quarterly, Volume 6, Issue 2, 1979.)

Also in Adams County, in Lima Township, 2 North, 2 West, on 14 August 1860, were two men of the age to be sons of John and Susannah but, unless John was a dedicated itinerant, their birthplaces belie that possibility:

Washington Wade 30 M Farm laborer born KY

Matthew A Wade 29 M born IL

John Wade was living in Lima Township, Adams County, Illinois, in 1850. The birthplaces of his wife Susannah and daughter Eliza Jane do not agree with the 1860 census, but IA probably was intended as an abbreviation for Indiana. The birthplace ofElizabeth Wade indicates that John lived in Missouri in 1836 which suggests that he also lived there in 1834, when Susannah E. Wade of the 1860 census was born: (The Wade Quarterly, Volume 5, Issue 3, 1978.)

Israel Christie was a son of James Christie and Sarah Lemmon. James Christie, who served in the Revolutionary War, was born on 16 August 1758 in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, and died in Shelby County, Kentucky, on 08 March 1837. He and SarahLemmon were married on 20 March 1781 in Orange County, Virginia. Sarah LemmonChristie was a daughter of James Lemmon, who was in the French and Indian War. It has been said that she was a granddaughter of Pontiac, a chief of the Ottawa tribe. Born about 1720, Pontiac was killed at Cahokia in Illinois in 1769. Sarah was born on 19 April 1762 in Hagerstown, Maryland, and died on 27 March 1844 in Ripley County, Indiana. (Data of Mildred Barnes.)

Evan Miles, who married Mary Christie, was a son of Samuel Miles and Sarah James. Evan Miles apparently moved to Madison, Indiana, where his wife Mary Christie Miles died on 15 March 1833.

Sarah Miles, the first wife of William Christie, apparently was his first cousin, a daughter of Isaac Miles and Mary Ann Jones. Isaac Miles signed their marriage bond in Woodford County in 1805. (Forks of Elkhorn Church, Ermina Jett Darnell, Standard Printing Company, Louisville, 1946.) William Christie married (2)Elizabeth Miles, another first cousin and a daughter of John Miles and Elizabeth Jones, on 05 February 1810 in Shelby County, Kentucky, with David Miles as surety on the bond. Isaac Miles and John Miles were brothers of Evan Miles who married Mary Christie. Mary Ann Jones Miles and Elizabeth Jones Miles were sisters. The third wife of William Christie, Elizabeth Pearson Rodgers, was the widow of George Rodgers and sister of John Pearson. Elizabeth Pearson Rodgers was the mother of Thurza Rodgers who married Squire Wade and Mahala Rodgers who married William J. Hughes. Lemmon Christie married Elizabeth Pearson, daughter of John Pearson, in Shelby County on 20 January 1835.

Abraham Lewis, who married Christina Christie in 1805, was a son of Joseph Lewis and Sarah Beck. The marriage was recorded on 08 February 1805. (Shelby County, Kentucky, Marriages, 1792-1833.)

Polly Lewis, the first wife of James Christie, Jr., was a daughter of Joseph Lewis and Sarah Beck. Elizabeth Herren, the second wife of James Christie, Jr., was a daughter of Fielding Herren.

Elizabeth Cook, who married Israel Christie, was a daughter of Abraham Cook and Sarah Jones. Sarah Jones Cook was a sister of Mary Ann Jones Miles and Elizabeth Jones Miles.

Eliza Christie, sister of Sarah Christie Wade and daughter of Israel Christie and Elizabeth Cook, married James Crook in Shelby County, Kentucky, on 13 August 1840, with Abraham Christie as bondsman. (Shelby County, Kentucky, Marriage Book 5, page

897.) Her brother Jeffrey B. Christie married Letha Bohannon, daughter of Henry T. Bohannon and Philadelphia Gale.

James Crook, who married Eliza Christie, was the son of Zachariah Crook, probably by his first wife Jenny Jones. Zachariah Crook was a brother of Mary “Polly” Crook who married Jones Johnson and had Louisa Crook Johnson, who married William Wade, and Mary Ann “Polly” Johnson, who married Anderson Wade. Hezekiah Crook, who married Elizabeth Johnson, sister of Jones Johnson, was a brother of Zachariah Crook and Polly Crook Johnson. Their parents were Absalom and Mary Ann Crook, who came to Madison County, Kentucky, from Virginia. (Crook data of compiler.)

Joseph Lewis was a brother of Susannah Lewis Butcher Johnson, step-mother of Jones and Elizabeth Johnson. Susannah Lewis was the widow of Samuel Butcher when she came to Kentucky from Loudoun County, Virginia, and married Jesse Johnson in Shelby County on 21 April 1806, with her brother Joseph Lewis as surety on the bond. She died in Madison County, Kentucky, in 1819. In her will, Susannah Lewis Johnson identified a sister and three brothers, Martha Lewis Beck who had seven children, including Moses Beck, Joseph Beck, John Beck, Bristow (Brister) Beck, Patsy Beck Bristow (Brister), and Sally Beck Lee; Isaac Lewis, who was married to Nancy Overfield and had sons Benjamin Lewis, who married Nancy Cowherd, daughter of Reuben Cowherd, on 02 December 1817 and Isaac Lewis, Jr., who married Mahala B. Rucker, daughter of Lucy L. Rucker, on 25 March 1824, and four daughters, including Susannah Lewis, who married Richard Finley on 26 March 1812, Elizabeth “Betsy” Lewis, who married George Osburn on 10 August 1814, and Ann Lewis, who married David Lilly on 11 April 1820; James Lewis, whose wife was named Sally, who had four daughters, including Taney (or Tacy) Lewis, who married David Brown on 09 September 1813, and Nancy Lewis, who married Henry Polsgrove on 31 August 1818, and sons, Abraham Lewis who married Joyce Wilcoxson, daughter of Daniel Wilcoxson and Sally Faulconer, on 18 September 1821; and Joseph Lewis, who was married to Sarah Beck and had Ann Lewis, who became the second wife of Samuel Miles, Jr. on 07 April 1802, Susannah Lewis, who married Roger “Toddy” Ellis on 06 January 1804, Kitty Lewis, who married John Green on 19 May 1804, Joseph Lewis, Jr., who married the widow Nancy Bell on 25 June 1804, Abraham Lewis, who married Christina Christie in 1805, Rachel Lewis, who married David Miles, son of John Miles, on 05 February 1810, Isaac Lewis, who married Margaret Bristow on 24 August 1810, Esther Lewis, who apparently married Samuel Prothero on 06 February 1812, Polly Lewis, who married James Christie, Jr. on 16 July 1812, Hannah Lewis, who married Zachariah Lee on 31 August 1815, Elizabeth Lewis, who married Gideon Hale on 08 December 1817, Rebecca Lewis, who apparently married Henry Lawson on 13 May 1821, Sally Lewis, Martha Lewis, Jemima Lewis, Jesse Lewis, Jonathan Lewis and James Lewis. Joseph Lewis, Jr. married Nancy Bell, a widow, and had a step-daughter, Susannah Bell who married John R. Irwin on 29 August 1819. (Crook and Johnson data of compiler.) Joseph and Sarah Beck Lewis were members of the Forks of Elkhorn Baptist Church with the Cook and Bohannon families. Joseph Lewis and John Miles, along with John Bohannon, her son-in-law, witnessed the will of Margaret Jones Cook in Franklin County, Kentucky, on 11 March 1797. They later moved to Shelby County with the Cooks and Bohannons. (Forks of Elkhorn Church.)

Isaac Lewis married Margaret Bristow, whose father was dead, on 24 August 1810, with Samuel Prothero as surety on their bond. Samuel Prothero married Esther Lewis, daughter of Jesse Lewis, on 06 February 1812, with William Prothero as security. Isaac Lewis was bondsman when Josiah Harrison married Hannah Bristow, whose father was dead and whose mother was Sarah Bristow, on 13 December 1812. James Bristow and Sarah Prothero, daughter of Thomas and Hannah Prothero, were married on 20 April 1813, with William Prothero as bondsman. John Prothero, son of Hannah Prothero, and Ann Bristow, daughter of Benjamin A. Bristow, deceased, and Sarah Bristow, were married on 29 July 1821 with James Miles as surety. Sarah Bristow, widow of Benjamin Bristow, married Abel M. Sargent on 11 June 1823, with Samuel Miles as bondsman. (Shelby County, Kentucky, Marriages, 1792-1833.) Benjamin Bristow and Sarah Miles, daughter of Samuel Miles, obtained a marriage bond, with David Pugh as surety, in Franklin County, Virginia, on 07 December 1789. (Marriage Bonds of Franklin County, Virgina, 1786-1858.) Hannah Prothero apparently was a daughter of Samuel Miles and Sarah James since Thomas Prothero was an heir of Samuel Miles, Sr.

Hosea Dunn, who married (2) Elizabeth Christie, was a son of William Dunn and Bathsheba Cook. He married (1) Eunice “Nise” Cook on 19 July 1814 in Shelby County. Bathsheba Cook Dunn was a sister of Helen Cook Bohannon, mother of Henry T. Bohannon. Bathsheba Cook Dunn and Helen Cook Bohannon were sisters of Abraham Cook who married Sarah Jones. Sarah Jones Cook was a sister of Rachel Jones, who married Royal Wade, Prudence Jones, who married Abraham Bohannon, Elizabeth Jones, who married John Miles, and Mary Ann Jones, who married Isaac Miles. Their parents were John and Mary (Rentfro?) Jones who came to Kentucky from Franklin County, Virginia. Margaret Jones, probable sister of John, married William Cook, Jr. and had, among other children, Abraham Cook, Bathsheba Cook Dunn, Helen Cook Bohannon, and Eunice Cook who married Samuel Miles. (Jones, Cook and Bohannon data of compiler.)

Samuel Miles, Jr. married (1) Eunice Cook, daughter of William Cook and Margaret Jones, on 27 February 1797 in Franklin County, Kentucky; (2) Ann Lewis on 07 April 1802 in Shelby County; and (3) Mary Wilcoxson Vardeman, daughter of Daniel Wilcoxson and Sally Faulconer and widow of Thomas Vardeman, on 03 April 1822 inShelby County. Peter Vardeman, son of Thomas Vardeman and Polly Wilcoxson, married Mary “Polly” Scrogin, sister of Benjamin Scrogin, whose son William Samuel Scrogins married Mary Edna Wade, daughter of William Wade and Louisa Crook Johnson.

Samuel Miles, who married (1) Sarah Miles, daughter of Enos Miles and Ann Bohannon, on 03 August 1815; (2) Susannah Wade, daughter of Royal Wade and Rachel Jones, on 13 November 1847; and (3) Margaret Wade, sister of Susannah, on 10 November 1863, was a nephew of Samuel Miles, Jr. and a son of John Miles and Elizabeth Jones. The children of Samuel Miles, who was born on 25 October 1796, have not been determined. It is unlikely that he had children by his last two wives since they were, respectively, 45 and 58 when they married him. All three marriages occurred in Shelby County, Kentucky, where Samuel and Sarah Miles sold land on 10 April 1827.

(Shelby County, Kentucky, Deed Book W, page 213.)

Elizabeth Jones, who married John Miles, was born 03 March 1765 and died on 14 July 1833 in Hendricks County, Indiana.

Lucinda Tiller, the second wife of Isaac Miles, was the widow of John Tiller. Her maiden name may have been Guthrie since she was identified as the widow Guthrie in a biographical sketch of Isaac Miles, who ran a grist mill in Woodford County, Kentucky, on Glenns Creek, across the stream from his residence. Both structures were standing a few years prior to 1938. His mill was one of the first built in the county and one of two in the community that was subsequently named Millville by his son Samuel Miles, who continued the operation of the mill. Samuel was succeeded in the milling business by his son John E. Miles, who was very successful. To obtain better access to transportation facilities, John moved to Frankfort, Kentucky, where he built a large mill and elevator. His J.E.M. Brand of flour was popular for years and the brand name eventually passed to a milling company in Lexington, that was still using it 1938. (History of Woodford County, Kentucky, William E. Railey, Frankfort, KY, 1938, reprinted Genealogical Publishing Company, Baltimore, 1975.)

Ann Bohannon, who married Enos Miles, was a daughter of James Bohannon (Bohanon), whose will was dated 03 August 1774 and proved in Surry County, North Carolina, the same month. It named three children, Jeremiah, Ann and Isabel Bohannon. Jeremiah, who lived on the Pigg River, was to be bound out to Josiah Jones, with whom his daughters were then living. (Will Book 1, page 27a, Surry County, North Carolina, Will Abstracts, Jo White Linn, publication data missing, transcribed by James Bohannon, Escalon, CA, 1988.)

James Bohannon apparently died of blood poisoning: (Records of the Moravians in North Carolina, 1752-1775, Volume II, Fries, publication data missing, transcript from James Bohannon.)

March 18, 1774, Br. Schaub has engaged the constable, Bohannen, to work for some months at the Tavern.

Aug 1, 1774 Bohannen (“the constable from England”) who has been hostler in the Tavern, ran a splinter into his foot fourteen days ago. Br. Bonn took it out, but he has a wound-fever.

Aug 6th At five o'clock the body of James Bohannen was buried in our Parishgraveyard. Br. Fritz conducted the service in English.

The description, “from England,” by the Germanic members of the Moravian Church, may imply that the Moravians determined the birthplace of James Bohannon or just his ancestral origin. It also may be simply an identification by language. When the Moravians were migrating from Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, to Wachovia, North Carolina, in 1753, they stopped for one night with Robert Jones on the Pigg River and described him as a Welshman. (Travels in the American Colonies, Newton D. Mereness,

Antiquarian Press, New York, 1961, data of Russell Bidlack, Ann Arbor, MI, 1987.) Robert Jones was born in Wales and emigrated to Pennsylvania with his parents when he was a small boy.

The Pigg River, where Jeremiah Bohannon was living, was in the part of neighboring Pittsylvania County, Virginia, in 1774, that became Henry County in 1777 and Franklin County in 1786. This is the area where the associated Wade, Jones, Bohannon, Cook, Miles and Rentfro families resided.

The executor of the estate of James Bohannon (Bohanon) was Tyree Glenn who filed an inventory in November 1774. (Will Book 1, page 31, Surry County, North Carolina, Will Abstracts.) On 22 July 1797 Enos Miles of Woodford County, Kentucky, appointed Jeremiah Bohannon of Montgomery County, Virginia, his attorney to receive sums owed to Enos by Tyree Glenn (Gleen) of Surry County. (Franklin County, Virginia, Deed Book 3, page 480, Abstracts of the Eighteenth Century Deed Books of Franklin County, Virginia, Sara Motisher Beck, Franklin County Bicentennial Commission, Rocky Mount, VA 1978.)

Jeremiah Bohannon (Buchanon) and Sarah Jones were married on 15 December 1786; Ann Bohannon (Anna Buckanan) and Enos Miles were married on 25 July 1789; and Isabella Bohannon (Buckhannan) and Joseph Beck (Beek) were married on 21 January 1791. (Marriage Bonds of Franklin County, Virgina, 1786-1858.)

James Bohannon of Surry County, North Carolina, may have been related to Andrew Bohannon who was on the 1771 tax list for Surry County. (Data of James Bohannon.)

Ann Bohannon Miles was born on 25 May 1770 and died in Montgomery County, Ohio, on 25 December 1810. Enos Miles owned land on Glenns Creek in Woodford County,Kentucky, in 1796, which he sold to Aaron Darnell in 1809, apparently before moving to Germantown, southwest of Dayton, in Montgomery County, Ohio, to live in an anti-slavery state. Enos married (2) Sarah Ann Troup Rentfro, a widow, in Montgomery County on 12 March 1812. (Hoosier Pioneers.)

There is a tradition that the first wife of Enos Miles was Ann Buchanan, a sister of President James Buchanan of the United States, who was a son of Andrew Buchananand Jane Russell. After the Revolutionary War, Enos Miles moved with his parents from Baltimore, Maryland, to Chester County, Pennsylvania. On 30 July 1789 he married Ann Buchanan in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, and later migrated to Lynchburg, Virginia, then to Versailles, Kentucky, and finally to Ohio. (Data of Mildred Christie Barnes.) Lynchburg, Virginia, is in Campbell County which was formed in 1782 from Bedford County. It is near Franklin County where Enos Miles married Ann Bohannon.

Born in 1770, Ann Bohannon Miles was nearly a generation ahead of President Buchanan (1791-1868), who was a native of Mercersburg, Franklin County, Pennsylvania. To justify the contention that she was a sister of the president, it has been proposed that two weddings were held to satisfy the desires of both families, one on 25 July 1789 in Virginia and one on 30 July 1789 in Pennsylvania. That would have

been improbable, if not impossible, within five days in 1789.

Samuel Miles, Sr. was born in Wales about 1730 and died in April 1811 in Shelby County, Kentucky. He married Sarah James in Baltimore, Maryland, in 1760. She was born in Chester County, Pennsylvania, on 12 December 1746 and died in Shelby County between 1811 and 1820. After the Revolutionary War they lived in Franklin County, Virginia, before moving to Shelby County, Kentucky. (Data of Mildred Christie Barnes.) Samuel and Sarah James Miles had nine children of whom eight are identified in a deed dated 04 November 1815 whereby, as legatees of Samuel Miles, deceased, John Miles, Isaac Miles, Enos Miles, Samuel Miles, Jr., Evan Miles, James Miles, Sarah Bristow and Thomas Prothero, whose wife was named Hannah, sold 107 acres on Six Mile Creek, adjoining James Lewis, Sarah Bristow and Jesse Lewis, to Benjamin Miles for $400.00. The buyer Benjamin Miles may have been the ninth child. The deed was witnessed by Samuel Prothero, Isaac Lewis and Evan Prothero. (Shelby County, Kentucky, Deed Book M, page 456.)

Samuel Miles and Sarah James actually were married in Pennsylvania. They obtaineda marriage license there on 30 August 1760. (Pennsylvania Marriages Prior to 1790,reprinted from Pennsylvania Archives, Series 2, Volume 2, 1890, Genealogical Publishing Company, Baltimore, 1968.) This suggests that the tradition, that they were married in Maryland and had their children in Baltimore before moving to Pennsylvania and then to Virginia, needs examination.

Sarah James, who married Samuel Miles, was a daughter of Isaac James. Samuel and Sarah James Miles were residents of Franklin County, Virginia, on 07 September1795, when they issued a power of attorney for the purpose of acquiring her legacy from the estate of her father Isaac James, who died in Pennsylvania: (Franklin County Deed Book 3, page 228, Abstracts of the Eighteenth Century Deed Books of Franklin County, Virginia, Volume II, Sara Motisher Beck, Franklin County Bicentennial Commission, Rocky Mount, VA, 1978.)

Whereas Isaac James late of the County of Philadelphia but now Montgomery in the state of Pennsylvania Deceased by his last Will and testament in Writing bearing date Oct 15, 1789 did give and bequeath unto Sarah Miles the wife of Samuel Miles ... a legacy of one hundred pounds, to the use of the said Sarah during her life and after her decease to be equally divided amongst the Children of the said Sarah... We Samuel Miles & Sarah appoint Samuel Duval attorney.

The deed, witnessed by Abraham Jones and James Miles, was recorded in September1795. John Drake and Benjamin Johnston were the executors of the will of Isaac James.

Another power of attorney, dated 09 September 1795, to receive a legacy of 100 pounds from the executors of Isaac James, deceased, which was bequeathed to Sarah Miles by his will dated 15 October 1789, was issued by Samuel and Sarah Miles to Samuel Duvall. Samuel Duvall then named Samuel Miles to be attorney for Sarah Miles. (Franklin County Deed Book 3, page 227, Abstracts of the Eighteenth Century Deed Books of Franklin County, Virginia.)

On 29 January 1795 Samuel Miles of Franklin County sold 100 acres on branches of the south fork of the Pigg River in Franklin County to Abraham Miller for $100.00. The tract adjoined a road and land of Randolph Hall. The deed was witnessed by Thomas Jones, Jr., Joseph Hale, Benjamin Bristow (Brestow) and Randolph Hall(Hale). The deed was proved in February 1795, Sarah Miles relinquished her dower right, and it

Caty Mikesell, who married James Miles, was a daughter of John Mikesell. The surety on their marriage bond was James Mikesell (Miksel). Married by Jacob Miller, minister, they had 11 children. James and Caty died in Preble County, Ohio.

Benjamin Miles, son of Samuel Miles and Sarah James, who obtained land from the heirs of Samuel Miles, Sr., was married to Cecilia Lawson. (Data of Mildred Christie Barnes.) He also may have been the Benjamin Miles who married Patsy Stout, daughter of Joseph Stout, on 10 May 1814 in Shelby County, Kentucky. Peter Stout was bondsman. Elisha Famitus Miles b. 02 Jun 1809d. 27 Jun 1884 Hendricks County, Indiana m. Nancy Swaim 16 Jul 1835

Probably about 1796, John and Elizabeth Jones Miles built the old house which was on the site of the home of A. W. Lippert near Duckers in 1946. They sold it to James Porter in 1803. (Forks of Elkhorn Church.)

Elizabeth Abbett, who married William Miles, was a daughter of James Abbett and Nancy Pines. The Spotsylvania County, Virginia, will of Lewis Pines, Jr. in 1787 indicated that his sister, Nancy, married James Abbett. James Abbett was in Franklin County, Kentucky, in 1796 and records suggest that he was the father of Betsy Abbett Miles; Peggy Abbett Miles; Garnett Abbett; William Abbett, who married Lorena Wade in Franklin County in 1814; and James Abbett, Jr. Peggy Abbett married John Miles in Franklin County in 1803. (Forks of Elkhorn Church.)William Miles and Elizabeth Abbett, daughter of Ann, were married on 01 August 1804. (Marriage Records of Franklin County, Kentucky, 1790-1815, Volume 1, Elizabeth Prather Ellsberry, Chillicothe, MO, undated.)

William Christie, who married (2) Elizabeth Miles, was a son of James Christie and Sarah Lemmon. David Miles secured the marriage bond for William Christie and Elizabeth Miles, daughter of John Miles, on 05 February 1810. (Shelby County, Kentucky, Marriages, 1792-1833.)

Rachel Elizabeth Lewis, who married David Miles, was a daughter of Joseph Lewis and Sarah Beck. David Miles, son of John Miles, and Rachel Lewis, daughter of Joseph Lewis, obtained a marriage license on the same day, 05 February 1810, with Roger Ellis, her brother-in-law, as bondsman. (Shelby County, Kentucky, Marriages, 1792-1833.)

Sarah Miles, the first wife of Samuel Miles, was a daughter of Enos Miles and Ann Bohannon, and a first cousin to Samuel. His second and third wives, Susannah and Margaret Wade, were daughters of Royal Wade and Rachel Jones and also his first cousins. Rachel Jones Wade and Elizabeth Jones Miles were sisters. Samuel Miles, son of John Miles, and Sarah Miles, daughter of Enos Miles, were married on 03 August 1815. Israel Christie was surety on their bond. (Shelby County, Kentucky, Marriages, 1792-1833.) Samuel Miles and Susan Wade were married on 13 November1847. Her brother, Anderson Wade, was bondsman. Samuel Miles, Sr. of Shelby County; aged 67, born Woodford County, Kentucky; father and mother born Virginia; 3rd marriage; and Margaret Wade of Shelby County; aged 26, born Shelby County; 1st marriage; were married on 10 November 1863. Their bond was secured by T. A. (?). (Shelby County, Kentucky, Marriages, Volume II.) This transcript gives the age of Margaret as 26, but the actual bond has it as 56. (Shelby County, Kentucky, Marriage

Book 9, page 2956.) Born on 28 April 1805, she actually was 58 in 1863.Susannah Wade Miles, who was born on 22 July 1820 and died on 20 October 1862, is buried in the cemetery at Indian Fork Baptist Church, as is Samuel Miles, who was born on 25 October 1796 and died on 13 April 1885. (Cemeteries of Shelby County, Kentucky.) Since Susannah Wade was 45 and Margaret Wade was 58, when they married, it is unlikely that they bore children for Samuel Miles. However, since he identified himself as Samuel Miles, Sr. when he married Margaret, he had issue by either his first or second wife, including a son Samuel Miles, Jr. Jehu Miles, whose tombstone in the cemetery at Indian Fork identified him as a son of S. and S. Miles, could be a son of Samuel Miles by his first wife Sarah. Jehu was born on 10 April 1816 and died on 30 May 1870. In his marriage license, Samuel Miles described his parents as natives of Virginia, perhaps because they came to Kentucky from there. His mother Elizabeth Jones Miles was a Virginian, as were her parents, John and Mary Jones. However the birthplace of his father John Miles has been given, traditionally, as Baltimore, Maryland.

Polly West, who married John Miles, Jr., was a daughter of William West. John Miles, son of John Miles, and Polly West were married on 21 November 1816. Her father William West was bondsman. (Shelby County, Kentucky, Marriages, 1792-1833.)

Elizabeth Rice, who married Isaac Miles, was a daughter of Jesse Rice. Isaac Miles, son of John Miles, and Elizabeth Rice, daughter of Jesse Rice, were married on 09 December 1819. Nathan Rice secured their marriage bond. (Shelby County, Kentucky, Marriages, 1792-1833.)

John Miles apparently moved to Hendricks County, Indiana, west of Indianapolis, after 1830 and before his wife died there in 1833, since he does not appear thereon the 1830 census index. The index of the 1840 census has two heads of household named Miles in Hendricks County, John Miles on page 688 and John Miles on page 695, which suggests that John Miles, Jr. went there with his father. (Indexes of the Indiana Historical Society, Indianapolis.)

Isaac Miles and Mary Jones, daughter of John and Mary Jones, obtained a marriage bond, with John Chambers as surety, on 24 January 1787. (Marriage Bonds of Franklin County, Virgina, 1786-1858.)

Isaac Miles, Jr., who was on the Woodford County tax list in 1826, (Forks of Elkhorn Church.) must have been the son of Isaac Miles and Mary Ann Jones. Since Mary Ann reputedly died in Lincoln County, Kentucky, in 1802, Isaac, Jr. probably was the Isaac Miles who married Jenny Bell, daughter of William, in Lincoln County in 1803. (Forks of Elkhorn Church.)

Isaac Miles was surety on the marriage bond for William Christie and Sarah Miles in Woodford County in 1805, which suggests that Isaac was her father. (Forks of Elkhorn Church.)

Thomas Miles and Polly Henderson were married by John Edwards on 17 August 1819.(History of Woodford County, Kentucky.) They later went to Morgan County, Indiana. (Forks of Elkhorn Church.)

John Evans Miles and Malinda Brown were married in Woodford County in 1818. (Forks of Elkhorn Church.)

Samuel Miles and Elizabeth Hawkins were married on 07 November 1825 in Franklin County, Kentucky. (Marriage Records of Franklin County, Kentucky, 1816-1841, Volume II.)

Jesse Miles who married Sarah Christie, daughter of James Christie and Sarah Lemmon, 20 February 1809 in Shelby County, Kentucky, may have been the son of Isaac Miles and Mary Ann Jones. Jesse Miles went to Indiana also. His son, Harmon Miles, married Catherine Henderson, daughter of Elizabeth Blackburn, in 1830 in Woodford County, Kentucky. (Forks of Elkhorn Church.)

Rachel Miles married Andrew Samples in Woodford County in 1808. (Forks of Elkhorn Church.)

Married (2) Sarah Ann Troup Rentfro 12 Mar 1812 Montgomery County, OhioBorn Died

Children (2):unknown

Sarah Troup Rentfro, who married (2) Enos Miles, was a daughter of Jacob and Mary Troup and the widow of Turpin Rentfro. Jacob Troup died at Yorktown, leaving his widow Mary, son Henry Troup, who married Dolly Wade, sister of Royal Wade, in Franklin County, Virginia, on 16 January 1794; daughter Mary, who married Peter Mikesell on 15 August 1797, with Henry Troup as surety; and daughter Sarah Troup, who married (1) Turpin Rentfro, son of the Reverend Moses Rentfro by his second wife Elizabeth Turpin, and (2) Enos Miles in Montgomery County, Ohio, on 12 March1812. Moses Rentfro (1728-1824) was a son of William Rentfro and Elizabeth Cheney. He married (1) Hannah Rentfro, daughter of Joseph Rentfro, Sr. and his wife Mary. (Chronological Index of the Renfro Family in the United States, 1700-1850, Donald Ott Manshardt, M.D., Peoria, IL, undated, photocopy from Ruth Smitt, Walkerton, IN, 1986.) Moses Rentfro married (2) Elizabeth Turpin by a Bedford County, Virginia, marriage bond dated 24 May 1773, with Robert Alexander as surety. (Marriage Bonds of Bedford County, Virgina, 1755-1800, Earle S. Dennis and Jane E. Smith, Bedford, VA, 1932, reprinted Genealogical Publishing Company, Baltimore, 1975.)

Mary Jones, the mother of Rachel Jones, who married Royal Wade, may have been the sister of Hannah Rentfro, the first wife of Moses Rentfro. The Reverend Moses Rentfro has been credited with the naming of the Red River in the western part of North Carolina which became Tennessee. Moses, Joseph, Isaac, James, Nathan and Solomon Rentfro accompanied Colonel John Donelson in a flotilla of settlers which emigrated down the Tennessee River in 1779. At the mouth of the Tennessee River, the expedition went up the Cumberland River to the Red River and beyond to Nashboro, which became Nashville. The Red River enters the Cumberland River at present-day Clarksville, north of Nashville. Some of the Rentfro family were killed in an Indian attack on Rentfro Station on the Red River in 1780. (Rentfro data of compiler.)

James Bristow and Sarah Prothero, daughter of Thomas and Hannah Prothero, were married on 20 April 1813, with William Prothero as bondsman. James Bristow and Catherine Kesler (Kester) were married on 02 February 1819, with Lewis Kesler (Kester) as surety. (Shelby County, Kentucky, Marriages, 1792-1833.) The second marriage may pertain to the same groom. The fact that Sarah Prothero, who married James Bristow, and John Prothero, who married Ann Bristow, were children of Thomas Prothero and Hannah Miles, suggests that James Bristow and Ann Bristow also were siblings. Hannah Miles Prothero and Sarah Miles Bristow were sisters, so the couples were first cousins.

John Prothero, son of Hannah Prothero, and Ann Bristow, daughter of Benjamin A. Bristow, deceased, and Sarah Bristow, were married on 29 July 1821, with James Miles as bondsman. (Shelby County, Kentucky, Marriages, 1792-1833.)

Samuel Bristow and Ann Long were married in Franklin County, Kentucky, on 11 October 1820. (Marriage Records of Franklin County, Kentucky, 1816-1841, Volume II.)

William Bristow and Sarah Lewis were married in Franklin County on 14 April 1821. (Marriage Records of Franklin County, Kentucky, 1816-1841, Volume II.) Sarah may have been Sally Lewis, sister of Jesse Lewis and daughter of Joseph Lewis and Sarah Beck, whose husband has not otherwise been identified.

Since Samuel and William Bristow were bondsmen for the marriage licenses of Margaret Bristow and of James Bristow, it is likely that they were siblings.

Born 19 Mar 1762 Baltimore, MarylandDied between 1850-1860 Jeffersonville, Clark County, Indiana

Children (order of birth unknown):Sarah Protherob.d.m. James Bristow 20 Apr 1813 Shelby County, Kentucky

Probable children:Samuel Protherob.d.m. Esther Lewis 06 Feb 1812 Shelby County, Kentucky

William Protherob.d.m.

Hannah Miles and Thomas Prothero were married before 03 October 1796 when, as residents of Franklin County, Virginia, they sold 35 acres of land there on branches of Island Run of Pigg River to Mary Troup of Franklin County for 15 pounds current money of Virginia. Thomas signed the deed with a script T mark before witnesses Robert Henry, Turpin Rentfro and Sarah Rentfro. Hannah relinquished her dower right and the conveyance was recorded in October 1796 (Franklin County Deed Book 3, page 387, Abstracts of the Eighteenth Century Deed Books of Franklin County, Virginia, Volume II.)

Samuel Prothero and Esther Lewis, daughter of Jesse Lewis, were married on 06 February 1812, with Jesse Lewis as bondsman. (Shelby County, Kentucky, Marriages, 1792-1833.) Samuel Prothero was surety on the marriage bond for Isaac Lewis and Margaret Bristow, who were married on 24 August 1810. Margaret Bristow was a sister of Ann Bristow, who married John Prothero, and Esther Lewis Prothero was a niece of Isaac Lewis.

William Prothero, who was bondsman when James Bristow and Sarah Prothero, daughter of Thomas and Hannah Prothero, were married on 20 April 1813, probably was her brother.

James and Hannah Boone Barnhill had a daughter Persis Barnhill who was born on 20 January 1808 in Oldham County, Kentucky, and moved to Daviess County, Kentucky, with her parents in 1823. They settled in what is now Boston Precinct and their son Joseph Barnhill still lived on the old homestead farm in 1883. James Barnhill brought a large drove of sheep with him and all were killed by wolves. Persis married Thomas J. Howard on 22 December 1829 and was living in 1883: [History of Daviess County, Kentucky, Inter-State Publishing Company, Chicago, 1883, reprinted McDowell Publications, Utica, Kentucky, 1980, page 682.]

THOMAS J. HOWARD, deceased, was born near Richmond, Va., on the James River, Oct. 19, 1806. He was a son of Captain Edward and Frances (Adams) Howard. His mother's father, Captain Robert Adams, enlisted in the Revolutionary war at sixteen and came out Captain at the close of that war. Thomas J. Howard's parents had a family of seven sons and one daughter. Thomas was the second son and second child. He was but eight years of age when his father died. He then lived on the old homestead with his mother until 1828 or '29, when he came to Daviess County, Ky. He married Miss Persis

Barnhill, Dec. 22, 1829. She was born in Oldham County, Ky., Jan. 20, 1808, and was a daughter of James and Hannah (Boone) Barnhill. She was a second cousin of Daniel Boone. Mrs. Howard was but fifteen when, in 1823, she came with her parents to Daviess County. Her father settled in what is now Boston Precinct, and Joseph Barnhill, his son, still lives on this old homestead farm. Mrs. Howard's father brought a large drove of sheep and the wolves killed all of them. After Mr. and Mrs. Howard were married they settled in the timber on Green River, near Hartford, Ohio County, for a year; then returned to Knottsville Precinct, Daviess County, where he taught school and farmed until about 1842. They then settled on the old homestead farm in Masonville Precinct. He taught school here a number of years. He was a man of fine education and taste, and that, in addition to a good brain, made him a very useful man. Many of his scholars have grown to manhood and old age in this county. He was an earnest Christian and was first a member of the Baptist church, but in 1830 joined the Methodist Episcopal church and was a member of this church up to the time of his death, which occured March 27, 1881. He was loved and respected by all who knew him--a faithful friend, kind husband and an indulgent father. Mrs. Howard is still living with her son Lewis on the old homestead farm. She is now in the seventy-fifth year of her age. She is a member of the Methodist Episcopal church and has been since 1830. She and husband had a family of nine children. Six lived to be men and women--Ruhema F., born Sept. 30, 1833, married Virgil Davis and resides on a farm near Neosba Falls, Woodson County. Joseph G., born Feb. 18, 1838, married Elizabeth A. Cook, July 14, 1860. They have had seven children, six living--Roxanna F., born June 6, 1861; George J., born Dec. 25, 1862; Rebecca P., born March 3, 1865, died March 13, 1865; Leander A., born Feb. 25, 1866; William D., born Sept. 11, 1870; Valeria E., born July 1, 1876; James L., born Feb. 24, 1879. Mr. Howard owns a farm of 105

acres, forty acres under cultivation. In politics he is a Democrat, but votes more for the man than the party. Thomas M. enlisted in the late war. He joined General Morgan and died in camp at Liberty, Tenn., of hemorrhage of the lungs. Cleopatra I. A., born Aug. 23, 1843, married W. A. Stone, and resides in Boston Precinct. Lewis P. F., born in Daviess County, Jan. 1, 1847, still resides on the old homestead. He married Melissa May, March 6, 1873. She was born Dec. 15, 1850, in Daviess County, Ky., and was a daughter of William and Susan (Wright) May. They had one child -- Susan P., died an infant. The mother died Feb. 16, 1874. She was a member of the Baptist church. Mr. Howard married Miss Laura V. Usher, Feb. 15, 1876. She was born in Louisville, Ky., Aug. 4, 1855, and was a daughter of John and Fannie (Woodard) Usher, natives of Oldham County, Ky. Mr. and Mrs. Lewis P. F. Howard are both members of the Methodist Episcopal church. They have had three children, one living--Thomas B., born June 28, 1878. Mr. Howard owns a farm of 286 acres, 125 under cultivation. In politics he has always been a supporter of the Democratic party. Mary E. Howard was born Oct. 15, 1850, and married Daniel Keith and resides in Woodson County.

1) was born January 06,

1725/26 in Exeter (Berks County), PA1, and died 1814 in Glen Creek (Woodford County), KY. He married (1) Hannah Hinton June 30, 1750 in Amity, PA (St. Gabriel Episcopal Church)2, daughter of George Hinton and Persis Boone.* He married (2) Hannah Hite 1766 in Augusta County, VA3.

Notes for Josiah Boone:Josiah Boone, Sr. lived in Exeter and Robeson, Pennsylvania. His birth date is also reported as March 6 [O.S.] or March 17 [N.S.], 1727 in Spraker’s “The Boone Family.” He was condemned in the Minutes of the Exeter Meeting for a “disorderly” marriage on May 30, 1750 although this appears slightly before his marriage to Hannah Hinton who was not of the Quaker religion. World Family Tree Vol #1 Pedigree 516 reports a marriage to Hannah Hinton on June 30th, 1750 at St Gabriels Episcopal Church in Amity/Marlatton, Pennsylvania. The Will of Josiah’s father, George Boone IV of Exeter, was recorded in Berks County and signed on November 18, 1753 and proven on December 24, 1753. This will provided “Thirdly, I bequeath to my beloved son Josiah the sawmill in Robeson Township.” Berks County tax records show Josiah continuing to live in Robeson for the 1754 and 1760 tax years. He was on the List of Removals from the Exeter Meeting in the following entry: “6-24, 1762, Josiah Boone to Bradford M.,” indicating that he left Pennsylvania and possibly moved to Virginia, probably following the death of his wife.* It was here that he met and later married Hannah Hite in 1766. He was living at Linville Creek, Rockingham, Virginia in 1768. From Virginia State Records list, Josiah served in the American Revolution in the Virginia State Militia, under Capt Samuel Kirkham in 1782 and on 22 Oct 1782, as a member of an expedition against enemy Indians, under General Clark. He served 32 days. Revolutionary Service Papers state that Josiah Boone, Sr. was in the Lincoln Militia as a Guard serving under Capt Samuel Kirkham, VA troops. He was assigned to guard duty at the Salt Works under Capt Kirkham. After the war of the Revolution, Josiah and Hannah Hite moved to Woodford County, Kentucky,* where he died in 1814. His will is recorded in Versailles, Kentucky.

aunt of George Boone IV. (see charts below)

Bradford Meeting was in Pennsylvania.

Josiah Boone served in the Virgina Militia as a resident of Kentucky. The Lincoln Militia refers to Lincoln County, Virginia (Kentucky). Colonel George Rogers Clark was commissioned “brigadier general of the forces to be embodied in an expedition westward of the Ohio” by Governor Jefferson on 22 January 1781. Later Clark recruited an army of 1,050 men to attack the Indian villages in Ohio. Organized into two divisions, one under Colonel John Floyd, which gathered at the Falls of the Ohio, and the other under Colonel Benjamin Logan, which rendezvoused at Bryan Station, the army united at the mouth of the Licking River to invade Ohio. This must have been the campaign for which Josiah Boone enlisted in October 1782. Samuel Kirkham was on a roster of Captain John Holder’s Company in Madison County near Boonesborough on 10 June 1779.

Josiah Boone was taxed in Lincoln County in 1787 and in Madison County on 17 April 1789. The 1800 Kentucky tax list shows assessments for Josiah Boone in Shelby and Woodford counties.

Leah Spencer Boone had a daughter Susanna Spencer who married James Gillaspy on 02 Sep 1817 in Shelby County (bond date) with George Boone as surety.
