Pattern Design System
By: Jennifer Collado
What is a Pattern Design
System ( PDS) ?A PDS or Pattern Design System is a system that offers different
techniques / tools that are specially designed for drafting new
patterns or editing existing ones.
This system allows you to use the tools one would normally use
when making patterns like modifying seam allowances, darts,
gathers, curves and measurements.
Pattern Design System & Computer Aided Design
A PDS differs from a regular CAD because the Pattern Design
System lets you work with different tools and not just in a 2D
and 3D view.
Although the CAD lets you see visualize your modifications as
close to reality as possible , the PDS offers more of an
advantage with the different techniques that it offers such as:
DigitizingMarkingModulatingGradingNestingMatching
DigitizingWhen certain patterns that
are drafted are modified to
make contour shapes and
adding any information like
addition darts, or seam
allowances.
Grade Used to ease at patterns,
meaning after patterns
are digitized into the
software, you can begin
to fix your darts, splits,
angles, and sizes. The
pattern s are then scaled
according to proportions
and sizes of your
original
Patterns.
Marking Marking modulation is used to
maximize the productivity and cut
down on wasted fabric .
It allows importted fabrics for ex)
stripes to be marked for
modification.
Modulate
Modulating is used in a
PDS to shape dimensions
such as the shoulders.
bust, waist and hips .
Modulate will shape the
jacket to fit these four
dimensions. Each
modification to the jacket
can be visualized when
changing names and
values.
