RPS bAlcony hinge

1 DeScRiPtion oF the SySteM

RPS balcony hinges manufactured by R-Group Finland Oy are steel partsused in pre-cast concrete buildings to transfer horizontal loads from balcony slab to the building floor and at the same time allowing vertical momevent of balcony due to temperature changes.

RPS balcony hinge consists of R30 or R36 lifting anchor installed to thebalcony slab before casting and balcony hinge steel part installed to the floor grouting. These parts are connected with an attachment screw. The attachment screw is installed to the R lifting anchor before the balcony hinge steel part is installed. Balcony hinge steel part is installed before the floor slab is cast.

RPS balcony hinge allows 14 mm vertical movement of the balcony slab.

RPS balcony hinge steel part is stainless steel (except ribbed steel part inconcrete).

R lifting anchors: see R-Group design instructions for R lifting anchors.

3.1 mAnufacturing method

Steel parts are cut and welded according to manufacturing drawings.

3.2 mAnufActuring mArkings

Product package is equipped with a R-Steel -sticker, which contains the following information: product type, product name, quantity, ISO9001 and ISO14001 quality and environment system markings, FI marking and product picture.

Products are delivered in cardboard boxes on a truck palette. Cardboard boxes are marked with FI and BY (Concrete Association of Finland) logo and the number of certified product declaration, numbers of the ISO-certificates and the product type and name.

3.3 QuAlity control

Quality control of the wire rope loops is done according to the requirements of the Finnish Code of Building Regulations and the instructions according to the quality and environment system of the R-Group Finland Oy (ISO9001 and ISO 14001). R-Group Finland Oy has a quality control contract with Inspecta Sertifiointi Oy.

4.1 design PrinciPles

Resistances of the balcony hinges are calculated for static loads according tolimit state dimensioning method.

Calculations are done according to following rules and regulations:

FIGURE 3 | Minimum installation depth to concrete

5.1 limitAtions for APPlicAtion

Concrete strength for grouting and elements must be ≥ C25/30.

5.1.1 Minimum edge and center distances

Minimum installation depth of the steel part of the RPS balcony hinge to concrete is 230 mm (see figure 3).

Minimum edge and center distances in the balcony slab are determinde by the Rr lifting anchor.

Concrete covers required by design instructions must be taken into account when placing the balcony hinge to the structure.

If R lifting anchors are used for lifting the balcony slab minimum distances according to R lifting anchors design instructions must also be considered.

5.2 reinforcement

5.2.1 Reinforcement of concrete elementSlab element must be reinforced according to SFS-EN 1992-1-1.

5.2.2 Additional reinforcement for RPS balcony hingeBalcony slab must always be reinforced according to figure 5 and table 4.

If R lifting anchors are used for lifting the balcony slab additional reinforcement according to R lifting anchors design instructions must also be considered. table 4 | aDDitional ReinFoRceMent

6.1 AttAchment to formwork

R liftong anchor must be attached to the edge of the balcony slab formwork securely. R lifting anchor is installed perpendicular to the edge. Concrete must be thoroughly vibrated at the lifting anchor. R lifting anchor must not be vibrated.

6.2 instAllation of the steel PArt

Steel part is installed to a hole designed to the outer wall and hollow core slab. Minimum distance in concrete is 230 mm. When designing the hole its manufacturing tolerances must be considered.

6.3 AttAching the bAlcony slAb

In the first phase the attachment screw is screwed ro the R lifting anchor through the rising socket and tightened securely. Attachment screw is locked by damaging the thread before assembly (done at the factory).

10

FIGURE 8 | Installing the steel part

Before casting the correct placement of the steel part must be ensured. The placement is correct when the rising socket and the adjustment ring touch each other.

FIGURE 7 | Attachment screw and rising socket installed

In the second phase the U-shaped attachment plate is placed over the risingsocket, behind the attachment screw.

6.4 instAllAtion tolerAnces

RPS balcony hinge must be installed plumb in both vertically and horizontally. Installation tolerances for the slant of the balcony hinge are given in figures 11 and 12 and table 5.

Slant of the steel part must be checked before casting and during casting it must not move.

If the installation tolerances are surpassed the steel part is straightened by wrenching the attachment plate.

Check list before casting:

• balcony hinge is in good condition

• balcony hinge is according to designs and in the right place

• balcony hinge is attached firmly

• the required additional reinforcement is assembled

During the casting:

• balcony hinge stays in the right place

• the concrete is thoroughly vibrated around the balcony hinge

After the casting:

• the situation of the balcony hinge is according to designs.
