RPS Weekly Newsletter

Dear Parents & Carers,

The good weather has returned, and I

hope this is helping to keep your spirits

high and that you are all in good health.

This week Nina, Aaliyah and Suzy have

been the teachers on duty, and they

continue to provide a fun project-based

approach to learning.

As bank holiday Friday was organised to

celebrate the 75th anniversary of Victory

over Europe VE day, lessons in school

have marked this special occasion.

Traditionally, families around the country

would celebrate this event with street

parties and social gatherings. As this is

not possible this year, I have attached a

link with suggestions of how you can

celebrate VE day with your children at

home: https://www.english-

heritage.org.uk/siteassets/home/visit/ve-

day-75/eh-ve-day-at-home-pack.pdf

Why not sing some war time songs, make

some traditional lemonade or have a go

at the Lindy hop! Children could design

celebration posters and bunting. Maybe

you could have a garden picnic.

I have attached a powerpoint that you

can use to talk to your children about VE

day. You can also watch this short film

clip produced by the BBC for children in

years 3-6:

https://www.bbc.co.uk/teach/class-clips-

video/history-ks2-ve-day/z7xtmfr

You can also access a resource pack from

twinkl:

https://www.twinkl.co.uk/resource/t2-h-

4813-ve-day-resource-pack

At 11am, BBC one will be holding a two-

minute silence and we would encourage

families to join in with this act of

remembrance.

Owen Wales, our brass music teacher, has

also recorded a short film clip of him

playing the last post. Please share with you

families: https://bit.ly/2zZm4q5

We will be posting pictures and short clips

of the celebrations we have held in school,

so do not forget to have a look on the

website.

Over this week and next teachers are

calling all our parents. Some may be doing

this from home so their phone details will be

blocked. Please do answer the calls. If

there is anyway that we can help or

support, you please do get in touch.

Happy 75th VE Day. We wish you peace

and good health.

Year 4 children have been planning and

writing stories this week and we have

received some fantastic examples.

Well done Anifat. We loved the bit where

your character has to think about his

strengths to solve his problem.

Fantastic story from Sara (Kingfisher class)

A wonderful 3 page Dragon story.

Amazing - keep up the hard work. Here is

Sara’s plan.

What an amazing adventure Carly went

on in Elsie’s (Kon Tiki class) mystery story.

Fantastic writing Elsie. I think you should

write a sequel.

Teachers are very excited when you

email them to share your home learning.

Here are some examples of the fantastic

home learning that children have been

producing.

Well done Niko in Coral class, who has

been working so hard on this great letter

to thank the rubbish collectors for

collecting our rubbish.

Well done to Sasha from Endeavour

class. Lots of lovely work emailed. You

look like you are enjoying your history

work on the Stone Age. Keep it up!

Conor loved the video message telling

him about how hard you are working

and belated Happy Birthday to you.

Isla Rose has been baking up a storm.

Maybe she heard it was Sasha’s

birthday. Well done Isla Rose.

Colleen was very impressed to see how

hard Nicoy has been working on

completing his multiplication home

learning. It is really good to see that you

are checking your calcuations Nicoy.

Well done.

Elliot from Cutty Sark class has used

coding to allow people to have a ‘chat

with a fox’. I am very impressed Elliot. It

worked beautifully. I enjoyed my chat.

Keep up the fantastic home learning

everyone!

In school Learning

This week teachers have linked learning

tasks to the VE day celebrations.

Early Years, year 1 & 2 children have

talked about how we know things are in

the past. They have learned that

people who were alive 75 years ago are

older people and they quickly made

links to Captain Tom Moore. They know

that we can learn about the past by

listening to people who talk about it.

They have considered the fact that we

are currently living through a signifcant

event in time that will be remembered in

history. They have thought about what

they could tell their grandchildren about

what it was like live with the Coronavirus

pandemic. The children have role

played asking and answering questions

about this.

They have also looked at what it means

to be a good friend. The children have

been making decorations and writing

shopping lists and instructions for how to

make smoothies. They also created a ‘

bagel bar’.

Year 3, 4, 5 & 6

The children have looked at how VE day

was reported on – through broadcasting

and newspaper reports. They have

made links with currently living

through a key time in history that will

be remembered. Children have had

a go at writing articles. They have

explored Winston Churchill’s speeches

and have written their own

broadcasts to communicate current

events.

How VE day was celebrated has also

been explored. Children have

decorated bunting, made paper

spitfires and made traditional

lemonade. Yummy!

All children at school dressed up in

red, white and blue today and

celebrated with a special socially

distanced street party in the

playground.

Congratulations Home Learning Stars!

Nursery: Darcy

Darcy in nursery has been incredibly busy the past few weeks with lots of amazing

learning. She has recently been extremely interested in the human body. Mum and Dad

have supported her interests and helped her learn about various parts of the body,

including the different structures in the ear! She has also been learning about the solar

system and is beginning to look at the different flags of the world. Amazing work Darcy, we

can't wait to see what else you learn about next week!

Reception: log in to NUMBOTS

and start you journey. You

can find your personalized

log in details on Tapestry.

Congratulations to Adel and

Daniel joining on the Story

to see some more names up

Thank you for emailing the teachers with

samples of work that your children have

completed. Please keep sharing the

fantastic home learning that you are doing.

If you have any questions about

homelearning teachers will try to help you.

Teachers have been calling all parents. If

they have not been able to contact you

please call the school office.

We were really pleased to hear the positive

feedback from parents about the Oak

Academy online classroom. We will

increasingly use this as part of home learning

activities. It provides set lessons for each day

that includes clips of teachers teaching

lessons. Children should have a pencil and

paper ready. There is also a new specialist

section with activities for children who may

have additional needs.
