(e) DESCRIPTION OF REGIONAL AND LOCAL GEOLOGY;
REGIONAL GEOLOGY;
The Area is located in the Precambrian Wabigoon sub-province.
This Area Embraces two major East-North-East trending Antiforms.
separated by the Swell Bay steep sided Synclinal trough. In
Cross-Section you have a "K" shaped structure over 6 miles across. The South Antiform is intruded by the Bad Vermillion Lake Gabbro- Anorthosite Complex. The North Antiform (Dome) is intruded by
the Rice 3ay Gabbro Complex. According to ?.R. Harris (G.D."-~.
Geological Report, 19?^) "The Ri c e 3ay yetasediir.ents form a structural Dome, This is the most hi~hly metamorphosed rocks of the Map area." Harris also describes the cor.r-on occurrences of garnets and Staurolite in those rr.etasedimeri's, which i
a high level of thermal metamorphism.

South of 3^eeze Hay in the Swell 3ay Synclinal Basin. A c ircular
"agnetic-Kigh Anomalyis outlined or. the O.G.3. Airborne Magnetic and E-:* Survey, 1980. This Xagnetic anomaly was outlined by a detailed ground Magnetic Survey carried over lake ice Feb. 1995 by this writer under Contract to Kr. Armstrong. The Magnetic Anomaly runs E-';/ for a length of nearly l Km. and over a thickness of about 80 K. The Magnetic Anonaly plunges Southwestwards at about 60*. This discrete Magnetic anomaly was interpreted as a magnetic basic to ultrabasic intrusive, within the Swell Bay
metasediments.
Two parallel "formational" Conductors extend for over J Kms from the West where they abut up against the Breeze Bay Magnetic Anomaly
In 1969, Noranda attempted to test the Magnetic Anomaly with drill hole N-88 @ -60*, they encountered 80 feet of water and it was stopped in red mud at a depth of 380 Ft. Drill Hole 1995-3 of this Report, is the first test of both the Conductor
and Magnet!c Anomaly.
INTRODUC'TIC::;
A Ground .Vagnetic Survey was carried out, Jan29-Feb.6 1995.
on Lake ice over the Magnetic-High Anomaly, North of Ar7!ot Is.
A portable S c intrex Kodel r'F-2 pre c ession Magnetometer with a Sensitivity of * l gamma was used in the survey. The combination of deep lake overburden (upto ^00 Ft) and the
high magnetic relief resulted in a relatively uniform, pattern to the ''aanetic anomaly. The pattern of the Magnetic Anomaly indicated a Southwesterly plunge.
A Deep Diamond Drill Hole Number 1995-3 was drilled from a set up located on thr Northeast tip of Araot Is. of 3ainy Lake. The Drill Hole was started Q - 52* with a N-3'-E Bearing targeted to test the Air E-' Conductor and to test the Magnetic-High Anomaly. The Drill Hole was started July 3.1995 and was stopped prematurely July 31,1995 at a depth of 1901 feet. This Drill
Hole essentially flattened very little for the first 1000 feet so that its trend in section did not cross as much ground horizontally as is the normal projection. This resulted in an additional UOO ?t. of Drill hole required to cross the targeted Magneti c Anomaly. Serious Difficulties were also encountered at a depth of 900 Ft. where the Drill hole followed alone; the bedding of Graphite in a Fold Nose, The Graphite walls spall off during drilling and a.use binding of the drill rods which eventually bulged rods at their connections. It is planned to deepen this drill hole when newer stronger drill rods are available.
RESULTS of DIAMOND DRILLING;
The Targets of this Drill Hole were to test the Magnetic-High Anomaly, and along the way to test the Strong Air Survey located 2-M Conductor. As interpreted before the drilling, the E-J'. C onductor was found to be Graphite in Black Sediments- "A Formation
Conductor". The Magnetic-High Anomaly was found to be lenses of magnetite as expected but the magnetite occurs in a thermally metamorphosed metasediment not in a Basic to Ultrabasic intrusive as interpreted. This writer was misled by the"short" lenticular shape of the "agnetic Anomaly set in an extensive trend of the Swell Bay r**etasediments,of uniformly low Magnetic relief, su di an isolated Anomaly was naturally interpreted as a magneti c intrusive, especially in a Geologic environment of numerous large Gabbroic- intrusions. The lenses of magnetite ri di sediment (up to 70?' magnetite) are l-*v feet thick and o c oar over a- intersection of 27^ feet in lengthwith l5:5-20f5 of that length being lenses of magnetite. The "agnetite lenses cannot be classified as the usual cherty banded magnetite Iron Formation, It is magnetite that o cc urs within what were most likely Pelitic sediments originally, but the magnetite lenses, in this writers opinion were con osntrated by a thermal mobilization of magnetite from iron rich sediments and iron sulphides.
There is ample evidence of increasing thermal metamorphism northwards in the drill core, the diagnostic marker minerals of thermal metamorphism have been recorded in the core, these an Biotite - Cordierite - Amphibole *Almandine*:.'agne t ite.
The oore from this Drill Hole is stored at the Kenora c ore library, and forms a very valuable source material for in depth studies of the Swell Bay Sediments and Structural Geology. Thin Section Work and Rock element analyses related to logging in infinite detail,would be valuable to Dept. of Mines and Resources in the area and to Exnlorationists.
STRUCTURAL GEOLOGY;
The core logging of this Drill Hole 1995-3 reveals that the Swell Bay formation are Sediments largely of pelitic composition with some siltstone that exhibits fine c rossbedding structures. An ex csllent "Horizon Marker" was also intersected at 900 Ft. which consists of beds of Black sediments,Sericitic Schists and a distinctive "Limestone bed"-with blebs of apple green Fucshite. This Black Sediment-Graphite horizon has been traced for several Kilometers westwards. There are variable gradually changing bedding angles to the core axis some of which were recorded during logsrinfr, this information together with the duplication of the Bla de Sediment- "Limestone Bed" series in a mirror imaare confirms the presence of a series of folds. (NotetThe angle of Bedding to core axis has two complimentary angle directions possible,) This detail of logged information together with the known regional structural geology leads this writer to postulate that: ...,. "The sediments along Swell Bav of Rainy Lake forr. a Synclinorial Basin. " . . .. between the Rice Bay Dome to the North and the Seine Bay-Bad /ermillion Lake Antiform to the South. Some of this information may prove valuable in assessing the Structural relationships in the discovery and tracing of mineral occurrences on the South side of Swell Bay. A postulated s dierr.atic fold pattern is indicated on the vertical cross-se c tion of D.Drill Hole 95-3 included in this report.
SG C?! Oy 1C GEOLOGY;
The iv'agne tic -High Anomaly was found to consist of a series
of magnetite-rich lenses in a mass of limited strike length in the metasediment s. Some narrow sections of Amphibole-Gamet carry a few percent of pyrrhotite and trace spe des of chalcopyrite Several of those sections were sampled and assayed and returned low but possibly significant? Copper values Geochemically. The Black Sediment-Graphite se ction traced by the Air E-K conductor near the depth of 900 Ft. carried Geochemically low values in Zn. and Cu. in the barren sulphides.
Near the bottom of the Drill hole near 1900 Ft. a Gabbro
intrusive? was entered,its North contact has some chance of being mineralized with Cu-Ni. ? If the caving at 900 Ft allows? this drill hole will be deepened several hundred feet.
CONCLUSIONS;
This Drill Hole 95~3 succeeded in testing the Air E-?/!
C onductor, which was discovered to be Black Sediments with Graphite, as previously interpretedthis is a Foraational Conductor. The lenticular to "circular" magnetic-High anomaly was expected to be a Basic to ultrabasic intrusion within the Swell Bay metasedimer.ts. This Magnetic Anomaly was found to be a series of lenses rich in magnetite, each lense appears to be of limited extent, but the mass effect produces a strong magneti c anomaly. It is this writers
interpretation that the concentrations of magnetite resulted from high thermal metamorphic effects.The Gabbro intrusion at the bottom of the drill hole presents some possibility that the North contact of this Southerly
dipping intrusion may be mineralized with Cu.-Ni.
