Report on Magnetometer and VLF-EM Survey - Townships of Hearst and McXi ttie , Ontario
Introduction
Linecutting followed by magnetometer and VLF-EM surveys were carried out at intervals from September 18,1972 to April 1,1973 over a 51 claim property in the Larder Lake area. A large part of the survey was over the waters of Larder Lake were work could only be carried out when the lake was covered with ice.
Location, Access and Ownership
The property is located in the townships of Hearst and Mcvittie, Larder Lake Mining Division, District of Temiskaming, Ontario. It comprises 51 claims numbered L270378- 270382 inclusive; L270384-270391 inclusive; L282855; L283254-283256 inclusive; L283389-283397 inclusive; L290033-290038 inclusive; L290051-290052 inclusive; L319198 - 319207 inclusive; L319210-319211 inclusive; L341844-341848 inclusive. The claims are registered in the name of R, A. MacGregor, 134 Palace Drive, Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, The property is accessable from the Town of Larder Lake which adjoins the property on the west or by a forest access road running from Highway 66 to Larder Lake near the east side of the property.
Previous Exploration
The area was explored for gold prior to 1940 by surface pits , some diamond drilling and underground work at two locations. At one location, the former Raven River Mine, workings reached a depth of 716 feet and about a quarter of a million dollars in gold produced in the period 1937-1939, The workings at the Laguerre shaft were deepened to 781 feet in 1946 following encouraging diamond drilling, but no i production was reported. Gold values and one copper inter section are recorded from diamond drilling (1939) at Thib's j point in the centre of the property. Records for most of j this wbrk could not be found. More recently two short holes, ^ for a total of 830 feet, drilled in Leroy Bay and near1 Thib's f point, following a limited geophysical survey., found graphiticzones in felsic volcanics,
lGeology
The property is underlain by an assemblage ofEarly Precambrian volcanic and sedimentary rocks intruded by 3 felsic stocks. This is overlain in the east part of the property ^ by Middle Precambrian sediments of the Cobalt Group. The ';
- 2 -
Cobalt group rocks consist largely of poorly sorted conglomerates with some greywacke ant! slates. Late Precambrian sediments are greywacke and some slate occurring north of Thib's point and the south part of Gold King point.
Syenitic intrusives occur at the Laguerre shaft, the Raven River mine and Thib's point. Gold mineralization is associated with these intrusions* The Raven River intrusive is interpreted as a volcanic neck or vent. Mafic volcanics occur between the Laguerre and Raven River shafts. Felsic volcanics are reported from diamond drilling on Leroy Bay.
Survey Procedure
A total of 7 base lines were laid out, 5 in a north- south direction in the west part of the property and 2 in a north east - south west direction in the east part of the property. Cross lines were laid out normal to the base lines at 400 foot intervals. Six tie lines were laid out to give location of the ends of the cross lines. Lines on land were cut out, chained and picketed and on ice chained and picketed at 100 foot intervals.
Magnetometer readings were taken with a Sharpe MP-1 instrument at 100 foot intervals and at 50 foot intervals in anomalous areas. The looping method was used for control of diurinal variation. In this method a base station is selected, and readings taken along lines describing a loop, arriving back at the starting base station in less than two hours. A second loop is then started using either the same base station or another which is tied to the previous loop. Readings are then corrected for diurinal variation by assuming the time between readings is the same and distributing any variation equally among the intervening readings. No correction was applied less than the accuracy of the base station reading. Before starting the survey, the magnetometer was zeroed at the Department of Natural Resources magnetic base station on the boundary between Hearst and Skead townships.
A VLP-EM survey was carried out using a Radem instrument set to read the signal from the Cutler, Maine station (17.8 KH4 ) . Readings were taken at 100 foot intervals using the procedure outlined in Appendix I. The looping method was used for control of variation, the same as described for the magnetometer survey excepting that the time was noted for each station.
Results and Conclusions
The magnetic survey shows a narrow band of high magnetic readings along the west boundary of the property. Thie is caused by a band *if iron formation. Spot high readings scattered over the property are probably due to small bands of iron formation or mafic dykes. A high negative reading
- 3 -
(-18,000 gammas) at 18 * 50E on Line 12S from Base Line 5 is probably a mafic dyke. An area of -f 1000 gamma readings east of Base Line 7 is known to be underlain by mafic volcanics, A second, larger area of * 1000 gamma readings occurring east of base line 3 on lines 26S to 38S under the waters of Larder Lake is probably also underlain by mafic volcanics, A change in the trend of the rock formations can be noted from north- south in the west to east-west in the south-central part of the property.
The Radem survey shows a number of cross overs, but most conductor axis appear to approximate shorelines, valleys, swamps or other features suggesting conductive overburden as the source. A more detailed analysis might show some conductors worth follow-up with more discriminating methods.
