GEONICS EM-16 VLF SURVEY............l" = 200'
INTRODUCTION
During the summer of 1991, Phantom Exploration Services
was contracted by Mr. Cyril Pettit of Beardmore to review his VLF
EM-16 data from his Watson Lake Property in Northwestern Ontario.
The property consists of l claim which were staked just to the
north of an extensive shear zone containing gold and copper values.
(see Loc at i on Map)
Approximately /l.3 fc/ilometres of lines had been cut at a
azimuth of 082 degrees with the grid lines at 180 degrees. The
survey was conducted in order to test for any conductive trends
present on the property and to try and correlate these trends with
the gold mineralization.
The Survey was funded by an OPAP grant from the Ministry
of Northern Development and Mines.
LOCATION AND ACCESS
The property is located on the boundary between Irwin
and Mccomber Townships approximately 8.5 kilometres northeast of
the town of Beardmore. The Trans Canada Highway # 11 and the
Canadian National Railways are located between one and two
kilometers to the southern boundary with the nearest settlement
for services being the hamlet of Jellico located about 16
kilometers to the east along Highway # 11. Access is provided by
two wheel drive vehicle along the Mindigokan road to the end of
Watson Lake and from there by either boat or snow machine.
THEORY OF OPERATION
The VLF EM-l6
The VLF transmitting stations located in various
locations of the world have a vertical antenna. Because of this,
the antenna current is vertical and creates a concentric horizontal
magnetic field around it. When these magnetic fields meet
conductive bodies in the ground there will be secondary fields
radiating from them. The VLF measures the vertical components of
these secondary fields.
The EM-l6 is a sensitive receiver covering the frequency
bands of the transmitting stations with means of measuring the
vertical field components. The receiver has two inputs with two
receiving coils built into the instrument. One coil has a normally
vertically axis and the other has a horizontal axis. The signal
from one of the coils (vertical axis) is first minimized by tilting
the instrument. The tilt angle on the EM-16 is calibrated as a
percentage slope and not as a true dip. (This is significant when
calculating Fraser Filter values since the larger numbers from the
percentages will result in larger fraser filter anomalies.) The
remaining signal in this coil is balanced out by a measured
percentage of a signal from another coil after being shifted 90
degrees. This other coil is normally parallel to the primary field.
Therefore if the secondary field signals are small compared to the
primary horizontal field, the mechanical tilt angle is an accurate
measurement of the vertical real component and the compensation 90
degree signal from the horizonal coil is a measure of the
quadrature vertical signal.
SURVEY PROCEDURE
The VLF EH-l6
The Cutler y Maine transmitting station was chosen because
of its favourable orientation to the geology of the area. VLF
readings were taken at 50 foot intervals over the entire grid using
the Geonics EM-16. Both the dip angle (in X slope) and the
quadrature were noted at each station.
To take a reading, the reference coil ("T") in the lower
end of the handle is orientated along the magnetic lines 90 degrees
to the station direction. This is achieved by swing the instrument
back and forth until a minimum sound level is achieved, (null) The
quadrature dial is then adjusted until the sound level is further
minimized. The dip angle and quadrature are then read from their
respective dials. The north direction is always faced when a
reading is taken.
DISCUSSION OF JLTS
The VLF survey was unsuccessful in outlining any
conductive trends of interest on the property. Only lines 12+00 M
and 6+00 W had weak crossovers on their northern extensions and
these are thought to be due to topographic features such as swamps
etc. A general negative increase in the readings towards the south
section of lines 0+00 to 6+00W is due to the proximity to the lake.
CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS
The VLF EM-16 survey was unsucessful in outlining any
interesting conductive trends present on the property.
