My Farinas: An 0wnership History o'o#l;[*

A short while ago you kindly printed an axticleabout my father's Morris Oxford and how this gotme interested in Farilas in a child. I thoueht thefollowing might be of inlerest. conc?rningvarious farinas I have owned over the yeaN.resulting fiom rhe trostalgia of dadb car all-thoseyeals ago.In 1988 I saw an advert in the local paper forARR 535H, a trafalgar blue 1970 Series 6 Oxfordfor f270 - taxed MOT'd and ready to go. A quickinsoection and test drive oroved it to bemeahanically good if a littli tatty around theedges, but a deal oft250 was done and I drove itaway.I was onlv the 41h owner and il was Dressed ifltoevery day service, proving extremely reliable(aren't they all?), taking me and an ex girlfriendon holiday to the Norfolk Broads, and my mateeven borrowed it to oick uo a l6ft caravan he hadiust boueht as it had a towbar fifted.-At the s-ame time I was offered RAU 6816 - abeige and white Series 6 from a lady for spares. Ithad just failed the MOT on rust but ranbeaurifully. ljust couldn't bring myselflo break ilup and on furrher investigation found it had beena hire car wh€n it was new. The battery andradiator were swapped as they were better thanthe ones on my car, and then the complete cax was

sold for what I paid for it - f,50. I supposenowadays it would have been r€paircd and putback on the road, but in 1988 a rusty MorrisOxford with no MOT had littl€ value. I b€lieve itwas, sadly, broken up for spares. In around 1 994, I bought a very sad but completeand running (only just!) MG Magnette COU829C which I planned to restore. However, onclose inspection it was probably too far gone.which was a shame as I rcmember lhis car as achild when it belonged to a local shop keeper. If Iremember I thi* John Grcen who used lo ownFBD 5C boueht it as a continued donor car for hisimmaculate lr4aenette. Still anxious for anotnerfarina I found E-RA 487H, a 1969 sandy beigeOxford languishing in an old warehouse. It hadclearly been vandalised and was sitting on fourflat tf€s, but the reg numb€r struck a chord withme and I realised it was the same car used by'Practical Classics' in 1980 when they did afeature on Lhe various marques ofthe farina. The previous owner had not paid the storage feesand disappeare4 and after much haggling Imanaged to purchase it for !70. Although it wascheap, once I had trailercd it home and given it afull inspection, it became apparent it would needa lot spending and many parls replacing to bringit up to a good standard. Six months laler and a lot

5

of hard work it was MOT'd and put back on theroad for the fi6t time in five years. Aside from afew teething problems it proved extr€melyreliable and drove beautifully. My brother took alikine for it and made me an offer I couldn'trefus-e, and he ran it for another couple of yearsbefore selline it.ARR 535H; my first and favoudte Oxfordchanged hands several times after I sold it, andone iight I got a visit fiom the police saying itbeen abandoned and vandalised and it was stillrcsistered to me.I ihought it had probably reached the end of therca4 yet some months later I saw it being drivenby a middle aged chap who had took pity on itand renovated it saving it ftom the crusher . Ibelieve it chaneed hands several times after thatand I last saw- it in about 1990...does it sti1lsurvive?Although I belong to this splendid club and willalways be intercsted in farinas, I curently run a1953 Austin Somerset (another car ftom mychildhood). Howwer. if another Morris Oxfordcame along at the fight price, who knows? If anyone knows what happened to any of thefarinas I have mentioned or indeed owns any ofthem, I would love to hear fiom you!

6 Eftn/errvleMy love of Farinas did not stan tluough my father having one,we had acouple of Ford ZephFs also BMc A40s and I l00s.My interest.like a lot ofpeople in the club, started through being raken to banger racing and seeingthese lovely carsgetting smashed up.It was in the Alde6hot pits in 1984that i filst noticed the six cylinder variation (I previously thought they wereall A60s!) listening to the tuneful bark of the C-series engine with theexhaust cut short and the seeing the largei and graceful lineswith the fins at the back.

In later yeals I started racing myselfand also decided I would get a westyto use on the rcad. The car I eventually got in 1987 was a 196? AustinWestminster, almond over connaught green with the registration NUF 6 1 7.This reg had come otr a Rover P4; the Al l0's odginal reg was PPF326E.

MBU 64I E

Since letting NUF 617 go I always wanted another westy, this time Idecided i would find a wolseley 6/110. A fiiend I had made on the internet,Michael "Boggy" Sanders from Liverpool, had similar ideas and hadplaced a "wanted" style advert and acquired both an Al 10 and a 6/1 10. Thephone calls kept coming and he told me about a 1967 two tone green Al10mk2 in Wigan ,the owner was seriously ill,the son didn't want to keep thecar but obviously wanted the car to go to a good home and saw Michael'sadvert. Christmas 2005 Michael went to see MBU 641 E and sent me somepictures and I knew then that I wanted it ( a westminster the same colouras my first one ha4 by fate, found mel) I went up on the train to see itBoggy kindly taking me over Eric had owned the car since 1973 when he

sold on the day before I went

Moving on to 2007

This year saw the car's 40th Binhday and so I decided take her back toCowley, Oxford where she was constucted. The log book shows firstregistation 7th July 196'7 (Oldham), so I decided to go over to Oxfordat the beginning of July. I have a friend, Dave Jones, whosefather used to work in the BMC factory and lives locally andworks over the road flom the site in a bus depot. The original factoryhas been pulled down, and there is now a restaurant called "The Long Wall"which for a while kept memorobilia on the walls. The former Pressed Steelfactory where the panels etc. were made still stands and is where the BMWMini is made today. So we took some pictures of MBU 641 E at itsbirthplace. Other events this year have included taking part in the COOCLondon to Brighton rally which was thoroughly enjoyable, and acquiringsome lovely rostyle* wheels fresh offa Rover P5B saloonl (thanks Tufty).

-The ioumev back to Herlfordshire was an excit insadventwe and without mijor iniident. Driving the beast. it all came bac[to me affer a few miles the memories of Aldershot pits re-kindled by thesound of the shot exhaust which gave me a headache by the time I got home(noise and fumes!) and woke the neighbours who thought a helicopter hadlanded. So the first task was to invest in a stainless steel system (thanksConra4 and also Tim for fitting it after a t p down to Hampshire).

It's a long lime since the club has had astand at the NEC so we were not able todraw. on much recent previousexpenence.

However I usually go to the show sohad some idea what goes on and Iwas determined that if we weregoing to spend the time, money andeffort needed to do it ther we wouldIlot just park four cars in a circle andget our camping chairs out.

My logic for this was threefold:

1 - Sitting in a chair looking at four club carsfor three days woul4 I thought, probably bequite tedious. Since going to the show and

NE4CI-nssrc

Cnn SnowNe/l'07

meeting people coming on th€ stand I have revised thisidea I must admit as I had some fascinating chats, includingone that brought teals to my eyes.2- If we were going to spend the money needed to elter the show weshould do something that would get us publicity for th€ club, and I wasswe that just parking some cals would not. That is, after all, myjob onthe committee and I cheerfully admit to not getting involved with theday to day ruruling of the club (well done Steve, Val, Conrad, John,Sheila and Tafi without whom we would not have a club).3- If we were all going to be there we might as well do something for agood cause at the same time and the Macmillian Cancer Care scheme issomething I have a soft spot for, and which also seemed to be wellthought of by others on the committee. Sharon Battersby fromMacmillan also handled the legal side, which I appreciat€d greatly.

I had been given the germ of an idea by Seth Kennedy (the club'sModified Car Officer) and it seemed like a good one, charity modelAustin Cambridge racing... Seth had met someone who races l/l2thscale ndio controlled bangers at a mlly and sent me a web link. It's asport that was invelted by Keith Dowsett of Kamtec Modelsport and hiscompany (wwwkamtec.co,uk) now produce a large range of bodies tosupport it. Of course with our club car's significance in the real sport'shistory Keith has had to produce quite a few shells depicting clu6 carsso we had a ready made supply of 14 inch long plastic shells that wecould use. but in a slightly different way... Radio controlled bangerracing is a full contact sport and the chassis raced can be fitted with anybody in a matter ofseconds. So model racels may start the night with aRover P5 and bring out a Wolseley 6/110 for later in the evening. Thebodies are quite cheap and essentially disposable. Keith makes i hugerange. from Z Type MG Magnettes to Peugeot 205s and they aresupplied unpainted; part of lhe fun is to painl them in 'your' livery

So affer a little time looking at Kamtec's web site (where I discoveredthat they make an .460 Van, an Oxford Series VI, a 6/1 10, an A99Hearse (!) and an A55 Mkl saloon) [ phoned Kamtec up, explainedwhat the Cambridge Oxtord Owners Club is, rhat we would like io raisemoney in some way using their models and asked if they werelnterested_

They were, and a friendship with Kamtec Keith (as I shall call him)started that I hope will endwe. He was initially surprised that a classiccar club would be interested in anything that is remot€ly connected tobanger racing but I explained that a sizable portion of the club'smembers have been involve4 at some point, with banger racing and thatwhilst the Club's aim is to preserve and enjoy our cars-we can'iwipe outhistory. On grounds of tasle il is imponant I make clear that I was notintending to have model banger racing on the club s stand but equally Ididn't see why the cars desigfied for tFat task should not be usedby ihepublic in some form of'pay and play' system, with the money going tocharity and a prize for th€ fastest time of the weekend. I then called theshow organisers and explained what we wanted to do; they too werevery enthusiastic and even promised extra passes for the people weneeded lo help run rhe stan4-which was great.

My first port ofcall for real vehicles was Bob Metzner (Our Longbddgeshow 'Foreman') who had otrercd to help organise the NEC at the AGMin 2006. He did not disappoint; promising either his A55mk2 or hisneighbour Johrl Kyte's Series V Oxford. He also volunteered theservices of his good mate Dave Morris (the Longbridge show's veryown Pinin Farina) and his A55mk2. I did not want two 'big fin'carsreally, as I think its best to show off the diversity ofthe club, but flushedwith the rtews that I had one definite car I phoned Kamtec Keith andstarted to work out exactly what we were going to do. It soon beaameclear that we had technical issues... Keith was worried about re-charging the cars ard about how we were going to time them etc. In theend he borrowed timing equipment ftom racer Brandon Snell (thanks

9

rescued me at Longbridge and did so again at the NEC) cameup trumps and provided some perfect 'surplus' carpet. We also decidedthat the weekend's fastesl driver should win a radio conrolled RC kit ofa club car This prize wasjointly donated by COOC and Kamtec.

With less than three weeks to go progress had slowed because I wasworking abroad but I managed ro book the enlire week of lhe show offwork as leave in order to prepare. Space dictated that we were soins tohave three cars so I lhought something unusual, like a Sun-Tor would begood as well as a 6-cylinder car. A call to longstanding local memberand arch enthusiast Keith Bullock gained the promise of his fantasticSun-Tor, (thanks Keith). The kind 6ffer of a third car came fiom DonWood if we were stuck (he was exiibiting one of his other cars onanother club stand) but it was obviously going to be a struggle for him.Geoff Baker ofered his Al l0 basic saloon but getting it fiom Ipswichto Birmingham was a problem. In the end our third car came in the formof Rex Cleaver's pre-Farina Al05 Westminster I phoned Rex, with Ithink. less than a week to go. He was completely unlazed by the rushand like Keith. Jobn and Bob. enrered into ihe sdiril wonderfully.

The d3y before the show found me bringing back 8'x4' sheets of plyfiom B&Q in a bonowed convertible Peugeot 306, with the roof down,in lhe rain. We all gol wel (including rhe dog) but managed to get homewithout being arreited lor having pl-yuood -on the drive-r s heai. On themoming of the setup day. Thursday..l was still lianrically building rhestand tor the club's bannet figuring how to fit four garden chairs ontothe roof of an MGBGT and tryingio fix the brokenlndicarors on saidcar. all at the same time.., Jusl to add to rhe fun it was blowing a galeand still bucketing down.

I arrived at gate 3.I on Thursday lunchtime flustered and wet. to find mylhree cars and volunteers already there. ARer a chat about layoul I hadto take my car back out and rhen walk the (il seemed like) two miles inrhe rain back liom the car park. as you are only allowed loading vehiclesin the show hall for a shori while. in rhe hour'or so it took me'io do thisKeith Bullock, Bob Metzner, John K''te and Rex Cleaver did awonderful iob of sorling out exactlv where the real cars were eoine inrelalion to ihe model raie track and-then mounted the COOC binneionmy home made plywood stand. Fantastic! COOC really is fuIl ofbrilliant, enthusiastic helpful people.

The model ncing car equipment finally arrived at about 6pm, and wethen had to assemble it. Again a big thanks to Keith BullocLwho stayedlate gaffer+aping carpet m.-ats togeiher so the models could run over'thejoins (we live such a glamorous life in the COOC) and helped build themodel track. By l0.00pm Kamtec Keith, Bianca and I were allexhausted and went for a proper Birmingham takeaway cwry After thatI went elsewhere to print out 43 size posters of the club logo whileKeith and Biarca got on with finishing painting the models in mylounge, it was well affer 1.30am before any of us got to bed.. . and wewere up at 6.30 on Friday moming.

A Police closedown of the A45 from Birminsham meant that our earlvstart tumed into a late affival and it was I I be,-fore we finallv opened fo'rbusiness, However our second saviour had arrived bv then in the formofAndy Clemence. a keen radio contolled model raclr who came to allthree days of the show and who we could not have managed without.Kamtec Keith had never done anyhing like this before and he managedbrillianlly but I know he won't'mind my saying that he would hivestruggled with the sheer volume ofwork required to keep the cars on thetrack. changing baneries and the like, withoul a capable man like Andyin the pits. As it was we were open for business wilhout a real breal<througholl all *rce days. and a lot ofthe credit for that goes to Andy aswell as Kamtec Keith and Bianca.

Bnndon) and penuaded his fifteen year olddaughter Bianca to run it. I don't know

how we would have managed withoutBianca, she worked all weekend and attimes was the only pelson whoactually knew what was going on.The image of her telling a load ofmiddle aged blokes (including herDad) what to do is something I willreasure Ior many years. . .

So we decided on a format: a Dound ago for two minutes, with three cars

running all the time if possible, so twokits could be recharging. We settled on a

srze,25ft.by 10ff, and I then found out thatwe needed to provide carp€t for the cars to run

on! Bob Metzner (who I have yet to see wear hisunderpants outside his tlousels but should do, as he

Page 10: RR120

Although Friday was quieter for the public it was busy ftom my pointof view as it was when most of t}Ie media and guests arived. We werevisited by representatives of the National Motor Museum Beaulieu(Stephen Vokins) and The British Motor Industry Heritage TrustGaydon (Gillian Bardsley) as well as all the major classic car mags.Classics Monthly took the track over for twenty minutes or so andstaged a lace between thee of their staff (Eric Richardson, James Pageand Mike Renaut) and a representative of the Corgi Vanguards range,Mark Pinnigar. Mark beat all three ofthe Classics boys! We were alsovisited by Classic Cars, Practical Classics, Classic Car Weekly, aadvarious other freelance photographers and joumalists. I was busy allday dealing with guests (including TV presenter Alex fuley) andhardly saw anything ofwhat was going on with the stard itselfbul themission was accomplished. Photogruphs of our stand made all themajor Classic Car mags (including Classic ard Sportscar) except forPractical Classics and they gave us a mention in the text.

I must at this Doint thank Bob Metzner and Dave Morris who ran ttleCOOC side ofthe stand wonderfully all clay; signing up new members, answering tecbnical queries and taking money for the model mcing.Ably assisted by Don Wood they did a brilliant job and I am aware thatI was not about much on the Friday so again thanks chaps; we couldnot have done it without you.

We made it through Friday having leamt lots of lessons and on theSahrday the club side ofthings was run by Paul Curtis, Lynda Knott,Mark Dunnett and Pogie Fisk. Again they all did a graat job andKamtec Keith's RC team had a busier day but were expanded by othervolunteers from the RC world. A bigger crowd was drawn to the standby the RC experts doing demos every so often and we ran at almost fullcapacity all day.

The real cars being displayed got a grcat deal of attention as well;Keith Bultock had set his Sun-Torh bed up with a large doll in asleeping bag, which made people look twice. It received many positiveaommonts fiom a curious public all fascinated by this wonderfulvehicle's extremely pmctical design. The engine bay of Rex Cleaver's.4105 Westminster &ew many admiring glances as well, I am sure hemust clean it after every drive.. . Whilst John's stunningly original lowmileage Oxford V brought back memories for many including a ladywho burst into teals when being allowed to sit iII the driving seatbecause it was exactly the same as her late Father's car, which she hadlearnt to ddve in.

With Bianca having taught the ever helpful aad resourceful Andy howto use the lap timing computer and even more RC guys to help wereally had the model racing cars on great money raising form forSunday. The COOC side of things was ably looked after by KeithBullock, Rex Cleaveq Conrad Parr, Lynda (again), Bob and Dave(again) and various others who mucked in at ditrerent times. I evenmanaged to have a quick look around the show and buy some HTleads.

The weekend came to a dramatic climax at 4PM when SharonBattersby from Macmillan came to Dresent the orize to the wioner andcollect our takings. We had a very alose race-off between two peopleand had to wait to Dresent the orize until we had given them both achance to have a firial 2 minute'heat each. All nail Siting stuffbut thewinner bv halfa lao after tlte race offwas Rob Hambridee from Burtonon Trent wbo comirleted 27.4 laps in 2 minutes.

I don't think I have felt as exhausted as I did on that Sunday night inmy entire life; I eveu fell asleep in the bath. I have heard peoplecriticise the orsadsers of the NEC event but I have to sav thev couldnot have been irore helpfirl. They did make a mistake re tire supply ofour lights but they organised a refirnd without aly quibbles and weregenerally very helpful. The only criticism I would have was that theshow took place on Remembrance Sunday. The organisers broadcastover the tannoy at a few minutes before I 1, saying they were going toobserve the two minutes silence in a few minutes time and indicatingthey would say when it was going to start. However tley tlrcn did notbroadcast again until tley said the silence was ov€r. We were actuallystood talking about the fact it must be about due to start wh€r theyannounced it had finishe4 a great shame because it's an importantannual event. which I felt the show should have honoured, It was alsosomething which I personally was both saddened aad embarrassed by,it's importart that we remember...

However it was a great four days and well worth the effort. The clubraised €492 for the Macmillan cancer care scheme, which I was yerypleased about, and I think all who volunteered had a good time. If Ihave missed anyone by name I apologise, I had too many greatmembers helping to mention everyone but thalks very much to all.

A few months ago whilesearching ebay for Wolseley partsetc, I came across a 4 volume setof motor repair manuals from thelate 1950's. There was no otherinterest, so the set was mine for acopper under !10 includingpostage.Although the 4 volumes reallypre-date the Farina range ofvehicles, they still provide anexcellent soulce of reference onthe maintenance and repair ofcars and components. Datingfiom a time when parts wererepaired and re-conditionedrather than replaced.

Countless nostalgic illushations, pictures and diagmms are used tohelp demonstrate the repairsbeing undertaken, covering a vastrange of makes and models andtechniques of the day.I have seen two different sets ofmanuals form the late 1950's'Motor Repairs & Overhauling'and 'The Modern MotorEngineer'. I would recommendeither set to anyone with ageneral interest in mechanics ofclassic vehicles.

NTG was founded in 1966 by Barry Naunton, Clive Tanner andMike Green (hence NTG) three MG enthusiasts who purchasedan MG TA for the princely sum of e15 for spares to keep theirown cars on the road. As word spread of their acquisition, other enthusiasts contacted them for many of the parts.

Subsequently they purchased fudher cars for dismantling tomeet the demand and also remanufactured a few new items.

Barry & Clive left the fledgling company around 1 970 to pursueother careers and Mike was joined by his broiher-in-lawRichard Bird, who together established NTG as aninternationally renowned spare parts mail order company. Thiswas recognised by British Leyland when they were invited to

NTG had been supplying spares for the MG Z Magnette for several years, andwere approached by Taff Gillingham as a possible supplier of Farina spares. As I work Sundays (clergy do (l)) werarely have the chance to get to ralliesand shows these days so this year wethought we would go to the Tom Roltin May, which confusingly was flaggedup as a three day event by the Tal-yllyn Railway but as a two day €vent onmost of the publicity on the Internet. We had been to this a few times abouttwenty years ago as we were then members ofthe Railway, and in those daysalthough the Monday was busiest the Saturday was probably as, ifnot more, significant than the Sunday.

Saturday 26th. May dawned al1d as planned we set offfor the Tom Rolt, hada look around the ground where these was very little happening, and waitedfor ihe rest ofthe COOC gang to arrive fron1 Bala for the advertised BBQ.And waited. Juan Carlos Tirzzolino sent in these photos ofvarious Di Tella vehicles in the city of BuenosAires in Argentina. As most of you will know,Siam di Tella is an Argentine compaay whichwas founded in l9l l. The name Siam is anacronlm for Secci6n Industrial AmasadorasMec6nicas. Car model Siam di Tella 1500,based on the British BMC Farina series in the early 1960s, became very popular amongtaxi drivers of Buenos Aires city. As you can see, there are still many fine examples onthe sheets today, including some 'Siambrettas'! Thanks to Juan as usual.

The centrespread in RRl19 certainly did not do justice to the Club's firstannual road run. Dave Page has sent us these pictures which, added to Lee'sfrom RR119 give a much better picture of that remarkable day.Dave irlso tells us that plans are well advanced for another road run thisyear. The idea is to choose a different finish point and maybe have adillerent finish each year. Get it in your diaries as soon as he sets the date!

A Sad FarewellSadly the time has com€ for me to t€rminate my membenhip of COOC. Thereason? I have reluctantly parted with my lovely Austin A60 Cambridgesaloon, KGU 328 D, a cumulus greylsnowberry white gem with red leatherseats.

was 86. She thenbecame mine to useand I ini€rited herwhen my motherpassed away in 2000aged 100. As th€ years hav€ \passe4 I found that I wasdrjving her less and less as traffichas increased: the roads have become sobusy locally that it was becoming difficult to nipacross them. so a modern car had to be the answer fordaily us€. I continued to drive KGU on occasions andI can say that almost without exception, wherever Iparked somebody would come up and admire her andtell me that he/she had owned a Cambridge or a memberof their family had done so. I am sure all COOCmembers are familiar with this kind of conversation. Everytime I went out, heads turned and in halt€d traffic, neighbouring driv€rs would cast glances. I have had many offers tobuy her put through my letterbox, an offer from Germany and I had amotorcycle rider follow me home for miles one day in the hope, it turned out, ofmaking me an offer. I have the occasion to drive to Windsor Castle everyfour years for a regular function and I simply loved driving sedately along th€Long Drive in Windsor Creat Park, and she became a favouite of the staffmanning the Castle Car Park.

Here, former member Hazel Oberst exprcssesher sadness at parting with her dear old A.60

after 42 years, as well as leaving the COOC...

Where is she now? Well, in l9?5 we were rcconrmended to a young garageowner of 26 and ever since then, Ron Ryall of RMC Garages, Dews Lane,Harefield in Middlesex (Tel: 01895 823488) has tak€n care ofKGU. In 1975at the time that BMC had become British Leylan4 they offered body panelsfor sale for the Oxford and Cambridee which were stacked in a field.

Unfortunarely. rhe o\ l ner of the house decided to mor e and the .pare panel.had to find a new hom€. We could not find one. so my father decided

,-! that at eleven years old in 1977, he would ask Ron to re-build KGU.Ron did so and has a photographic record at every stage of the\ rebuild. He has taken care ofher ever since and is devoted to

her What better home for her than with him? So in Julv lastyeat she joined Ron's collection ofcars in a large bam andhe tells me he recently took her to her first shoq somethingI had never done. I told him not to part with her as long as

By the way, I can thoroughly recommend Ron and his team forbodlnvork repairs; he hates modern cars but revels in the classics. All good wish€s for continued success to COOC - I will miss the RosetteRecorderWe arc reD' son!- to bse ),au Hazel but, or behalf of a nenbets. a bis thank lou .for arDut suppott aret the rcots. - TulJ
