2 RRU Equipment

About This Chapter

The RRU is a remote radio unit.

The RRU has the following functions:

l Receives RF signals from the antenna system, down-converts the signals to IF signals, andthen transmits them to the BBU or the macro NodeB after amplification, analog-to-digitalconversion, digital down-conversion, matched filtering, and Digital Automatic GainControl (DAGC).

l Receives downlink baseband signals from the BBU or the macro NodeB, forwards datareceived from its cascaded RRU, performs filtering and digital-to-analog conversion, andup-converts RF signals to the transmitting frequency band.

l Multiplexes RX and TX signals over RF channels and filters the RX signals and TX signals. This enables the RX signals and TX signals to share the same antenna path.

2.2 Panels of the RRUThe RRU has a bottom panel, a cabling cavity panel, and an LED panel.

3 RRU Cables

About This Chapter

The RRU cables include the PGND cable, power cable, AISG multi-wire cable, AISG extensioncable, CPRI optical cable, RF jumper, and alarm cable.

3.1 RRU Cable ListThis describes the RRU cables. The cables are the PGND cable, power cable, CPRI optical cable,AISG multi-wire cable, AISG extension cable, antenna jumper, interconnect jumper, and alarmcable.

3.2 RRU PGND CableThe PGND cable ensures the grounding of the RRU.

3.3 RRU Power CableThe RRU uses a shielded -48 V DC power cable. The cable feeds external -48 V DC power tothe RRU.

3.4 CPRI Optical FiberCPRI optical fibers are classified into multi-mode optical fibers and single-mode optical fibers. They transmits CPRI signals.

3.5 AISG Multi-Wire Cable for the RRUThe AISG multi-wire cable is 5 m long. It is connected to the RRU and Remote Control Unit(RCU) to transfer control signals from the base station to the RET antenna.

3.6 AISG Extension Cable for the RRUWhen the distance between the RRU and the RCU is more than 5 m, an AISG multi-wire cableis not long enough to connect the RRU and RCU. In this case, the AISG extension cable is usedto extend the AISG multi-wire cable for transmitting RS485 signals.

3.7 RF Jumper for the RRUThe 1/2-inch RF jumper is used for the RRU. It transmits and receives RF signals between theRRU and antenna.

3.8 Interconnect Jumper for the RRUThe interconnect jumper for the RRU connects the RX_IN/OUT ports of two RRUs, andtransmits the RF signals between the RRUs in the same cell.

3.9 Alarm Cable for the DC RRU

3.4 CPRI Optical FiberCPRI optical fibers are classified into multi-mode optical fibers and single-mode optical fibers. They transmits CPRI signals.

NOTE

l When the distance between a BBU and an RRU or between two RRUs is shorter than 100 m (328. 08ft.), a multi-mode optical fiber is used. When the distance is longer than or equal to 100 m (328. 08ft.), a single-mode optical fiber is used.

l A single-mode optical fiber connects a BBU to an ODF or connects an ODF to an RRU.

3.5 AISG Multi-Wire Cable for the RRUThe AISG multi-wire cable is 5 m long. It is connected to the RRU and Remote Control Unit(RCU) to transfer control signals from the base station to the RET antenna.

NOTE

The RCU is a driving motor used for the phase shifter in the RET antenna. It receives the control commandsfrom the base station and executes the commands to drive the step motor, which drives the phase shifter in theantenna through the gearing to adjust the tilt angle of the antenna.

ExteriorThe AISG multi-wire cable has a DB9 waterproof connector at one end and an AISG standardfemale connector at the other end, as shown in Figure 3-9.

4 Auxiliary Devices of the RRU

About This Chapter

The auxiliary devices of the RRU consist of the Outdoor Cable Conversion Box (OCB) and theIndoor Floor installation support (IFS06).

4.1 OCBThe Outdoor Cable Conversion Box (OCB) interconnects cables of different core diameters. The power cables shipped with the RRU cannot support long-distance power transfer. Therefore, when the power supply is far from the equipment, the OCB can be used to connect the powercable of the RRU and a cable with a large core diameter, which can transfer power for a longdistance.

4.2 IFS06The Indoor Floor installation Support (IFS06) is used for installing RRUs indoors.
