IDENTIFYING THE VERSIONNUMBER1. Checking the version number
Turn on the power while pressing the [PERFORM/TONE],[USER/PRESET] and [1/PIANO] buttons. The title screen of the test mode appears and the version of eachCPU and ROM is displayed.
Saving and loading user data
Items required:Sequencer(XP-80,MC-80,etc)MIDI cable
You can save the user data to an external sequencer (Bulk Dump)
The process of transmitting tone, Drum Set, Performance or Systemsettings on an external MIDI device is called Bulk Dump.
How to data save Setting the Device ID Number
When carrying out Bulk Dump, set the Device ID number. Whenshipped from the factory, this is set to "17." Normally, there is noneed to change this number when transmitting data to a sequencer orother such device. If you do want to change it, use the followingprocedure to make the settings.
1. Press [EDIT], getting the indicator to light.
2. Use VALUE [-]/[+] to select "System Setup."
3. Press [ENTER].
4. Press the numeric key [4] several times to select "Device ID#."
* If you hold down [SHIFT] and press [4], you will return to theprevious item.
5. Press VALUE [-]/[+] to select value(17 to 32)
6. Press [EDIT].The [EDIT] indicator goes out, and you are returned to the previousscreen.

All:All five of the above settings (The SYSEX of Use Tone willnot be output for Version Number of ROM. Please refer tothe Service information No.10134a [Ver.1.03])
1. Use a MIDI cable to connect the RS-5's MIDI OUT connectorto the MIDI IN connector of the external sequencer.
2. Press [UTILITY], getting the indicator to light.
3. Use VALUE [-]/[+] to select "Bulk Dump."
4. Press [ENTER].
5. Use the VALUE [-]/[+] to select the types of Bulk Dump.
6. Put the external sequencer in record mode.
7. Press [ENTER] to transmit the settings. The message "Transmitting..." appears in the display duringtransmission of the data.
* Do not press any key on the keyboard while Bulk Dump is inprogress. Pressing a key sends Note messages from the MIDIOUT connector. To cancel the Bulk Dump, press [EXIT].
After the transmitting is finished, the display will indicate"Completed."The [UTILITY] indicator goes out, and you are returned to theprevious screen.
8.Stop the external sequencer.
How to data load Setting the System Exclusive Receive Switch
When returning saved settings to the RS-5, set the ExclusiveReceive switch to ON. With the factory settings, this will be "ON."
1. Press [EDIT], getting the indicator to light.
2. Use VALUE [-]/[+] to select "System Setup."
3. Press [ENTER].

Restoring saved settings to the RS-5
* Be aware that when you restore data to the RS-5, the data in theRS-5 will be overwritten and lost.
1. Use a MIDI cable to connect the MIDI OUT connector of theexternal sequencer to the MIDI IN connector of the RS-5.
2. Set the device ID number to the same setting as when youperformed the bulk dump.System Setup Numeric Key [4] : Device ID(refer to " Setting the Device ID Number")
3. Turn on the exclusive receive switch.System Setup Numeric Key [4] : System Exclusive(refer to " Setting the System Exclusive Receive Switch")
4. Transmit (play back) the data from the external sequencer. When the transmitting is finished, you are returned to theprevious screen.
* Play back the external sequencer at the same tempo you usedwhen performing the bulk dump. If you use a faster tempo, thedata may not be restored correctly.
Caution:When data is being written to the User Memory, the message"KEEP POWER ON!" appears in the display; be sure not to turn offthe power while this message is displayed. If the power is turned off or interrupted while data is being writtento memory, the internal data may become corrupted, and you maynot be able to turn the power back on. If you have confirmed that,Upgrade (refer to "Upgrading the program memory softwareversion") and execute the Factory Reset (refer to "Factory Resetprocedure")

Factory Reset procedure
You can restore all User Performance, User Tone, User Drum Setand System Setup settings to the factory condition.
* If the RS-5's internal memory already contains important datathat you have created, this operation will cause all of this datato be lost. Save data that you want to retain by sending thedata to an external sequencer.(refer to "Saving and Loading User Data")
Five types of Factory Reset are provided depending on theapplication.
User Tone: Settings of all User TonesUser Drum Set: Settings of all User Drum SetsUser Performance:Settings of all User PerformancesSystem Setup: Settings of System SetupAll: All four of the above settings
1. Press [UTILITY], getting the indicator to light.
2. Use VALUE [-]/[+] to select "Factory Reset."
3. Press [ENTER].
4. Use the VALUE [-]/[+] to select the types of Factory Reset.
5. Press [ENTER].A confirmation message appears.
6. Press [ENTER] to execute the Factory Reset operation. After the Factory Reset operation is finished, the display willindicate "Completed."The [UTILITY] indicator goes out, and you are returned tothe previous screen.
Upgrading the programmemory software version
Upgrading Flash ROM
The RS-5 uses a flash memory for the program ROM.It can be upgraded by externally inputting MIDI data. Also, factory resetting must be done after each upgrade. If important data are written in the user memory, update aftersaving it.(See Saving and Loading User Data)
Equipment needed RS-5 Ver.Up Disk(17041032) The SMFs playbackable sequencer (machines that can be
played in chain such as the MC-80 and xp-80, 60, 50 aredesirable)
MIDI cable
Upgrading
1. Connect the MIDI cable to the RS-5 MIDI IN from the MIDIOUT of the external sequencer.Setup the SMF to play back in chain if the sequencer can doso.
2. Simultaneously pressing the [-] and [DUAL] buttons andturning the power on will bring up the following MIDI updatescreen.
3. Pressing [+] will display the following and wait for MIDIdata receiving.Screen display is [INC] but press [+].
4. After checking 3.s display, playback all of the .mid fileson the RS-5 Ver. UP Disk from the external sequencer.(Playback in this order p00001.mid--p00016.mid)
While receiving the MIDI data, the [DUAL] LED will flashand the [Waiting] display will switch to [Receiving].Endingdata transfer of one file will switch the display to [Waiting],so carry on and play back the next file.
RS-5 Jan. 2001
10
Upgrading is much easier when using a sequencer with a chainplayback function such as the MC-80.Loading and playing the.svc files (chain files) on the disk will automatically playbackall of the mid. files on the disk as well.Use the following file.
XP-80, 60, 50 : MITK5_XP.SVC
MC-80 : MITK5_MC.SVC
5. When upgrading is finished correctly, check sum will bedisplayed and the FAVORITE PERFORM BANK [1]-[8]LEDs will flash.
Check that each of the 3 upper case values and the two lower andcentral case values match.(Ignore the right most lower case value.) If they do not match, upgrading has failed.Perform upgrading from the beginning again.
6. If a checksum is confirmed, reboot and perform factoryresetting.(See Factory Resetting)
7. Check the version of the updated Flash ROM.(See Checkingthe Version Number)
Cautions:
Number of SMFs SMF is made for each Flash Memory block. Sixteen SMFs from p00001.mid to p00016.mid are made. A file in the middle may be taken out depending on the
program size. Since checksum data are placed in p00016.mid, this file will
always be made.
Ending the Update After the p00016.mid file has been received, all updated data
are received. Erase the block which was not updated at this point. This is for correctly managing the checksum data of the
Flash ROM. Therefore, updating of only one part of the block cannot be
done. If turning off the power while date is being written in Flash
ROM. Preform upgrading from the beginning again.
