The R&S®AVHE100 is a highly integrated, modular system that provides the entire functionality of an encoding and multiplexing solution in an extremely compact size. It com-bines sophisticated developments from Rohde & Schwarz with state-of-the-art IT technologies. The R&S®AVHE100 is a software-based solution built on a commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) platform. It uses hardware modules to inter-face with the traditional broadcast chain.

The R&S®AVHE100 can be flexibly configured for a wide range of applications. Signal flow within the encoding and multiplexing solution is fully IP-based. The R&S®AVHE100 has an intuitive, easy-to-use headend management system (HMS) that lets users control and monitor the entire work-flow via a single GUI.

The R&S®AVHE100 takes a unique approach to headend architecture, combining best-in-class software modules with highly reliable and compact hardware solutions to provide the industry’s first all-IP broadcast encoding and multiplexing solution.

Support of video signals up to ultra high definition (UHD)The R&S®AVHE100 supports the UHD format, which at 3840 × 2160 pixel delivers four times more pixels than an HD signal at 1920 × 1080 pixel. The input signals are 4 × 3G-SDI signals, each containing one quadrant with a FullHD signal (1920 × 1080 pixel) in progressive scan format. This means that the R&S®AVHE100 can accept and process uncompressed video data at approx. 12 Gbit/s per UHD service. The R&S®AVHE100 automatically combines the signals for the individual quadrants into a UHD picture and then encodes them.

Multi-codec support, including the new HEVC standardThe R&S®AVHE100 is a software-based encoding and mul-tiplexing solution, making it possible to adapt to market demands and customer needs quickly and flexibly. The R&S®AVHE100 can encode all received video signals with the new high efficiency video codec (HEVC) to achieve the best video quality at the lowest data rate. HEVC is specifi-cally used with ultra high definition (UHD) transmissions, as it accomplishes reduction of video data in the most effi-cient way. It is also finding increasing use with high defini-tion (HD) transmissions in terrestrial networks (DVB-T2).

Decoding of MPEG-2 and H.264 video signals,and MPEG-1, Dolby E™, Dolby Digital™, Dolby Digital Plus™ and Dolby® Pulse (high-efficiency AAC) audio signalsThe R&S®AVHE100 decodes precompressed video and audio signals, which are delivered as transport streams over IP, or as ASI or DVB-S/DVB-S2 transport streams. The decoded video and audio signals are taken to the respec-tive encoders, where their data rates are changed (trans-coding) and their resolution is adapted (scaling) to deliver the desired output format. Built-in automation capabilityThe R&S®AVHE100 comes with an integrated headend management system (HMS). Using the automation func-tion, the HMS can automatically perform reconfigura-tions. These can be launched at specific times by means of a scheduler or by an external trigger (e.g. SNMP, GPI). The intuitive, web-based GUI with its drag & drop func-tion makes it easy to modify reconfiguration sequences. This allows easy regionalization of the generated multiplex without external management solutions. In addition, the R&S®AVHE100 offers numerous display options (e.g. list/month/week view), where the start time for a selected event can be changed interactively. Events can also be completely cancelled.

Support of high dynamic range (HDR) techniqueThe R&S®AVHE100 permits the transmission of HDR-spe-cific metadata in a transport stream. This makes it possible to encode and transmit an SDI signal containing an HDR signal. An HDR-ready device displays images with a larger color space and an increased dynamic range of luminosity. Viewers see even more details, especially in bright or dark picture areas. The resulting picture is even more true to life and spectacular.

Hybrid redundancy solutionThe R&S®AVHE100 offers all essential functions of an encoding and multiplexing solution. On the R&S®AVS100 audio/video processing platform, multiple services are decoded and encoded in parallel, multiplexed, and adapted to the broadcast medium by means of transmis-sion specific network adapters. The hybrid redundancy concept makes it possible to implement an optimal N+1 device redundancy and thus an N+M encoder redun-dancy, with a 1+1 multiplexer redundancy at the same time. In combination with the R&S®CrossFlowIP tech-nology, this enables seamless main/alternate device switchover, i.e. switchover without any interruption of the generated transport stream. N+1 device redundancy additionally offers the advantage that one of the servers can be configured in 1+1 hot standby. As a result, the (high-priority) services encoded on that server also run in 1+1 hot standby and continue to be transmitted without interruption when switchover to the other server is made.

Statistical multiplex functionThe optional statistical multiplex (StatMux) function ana-lyzes the video complexity of the A/V streams to be multi-plexed and, based on the results, allocates appropriate bit rates to the encoders in a statistical multiplex pool. This ef-ficient utilization of data rates makes it possible to achieve higher picture quality for the transmitted programs or to transmit more programs at a time (enhanced efficiency). Programs can be prioritized within a pool. Higher-priority programs are allocated higher data rates to achieve higher quality for complex video sequences. The R&S®AVHE100 also supports a mixture of different codecs (MPEG-2, MPEG-4/H.264, HEVC) and formats (SD, HD).

Full functionality and flexibility, with only a few hardware componentsThe R&S®AVHE100 is a state-of-the-art encoding and multi plexing solution based on a high-quality IT processing platform that can be extended with an audio/video gate-way from Rohde & Schwarz. All R&S®AVHE100 functions are software-based, allowing quick and easy adaptation to modifications or expansions of the coding or transmission standards. In its UHD version, the R&S®AVHE100 com-prises only two R&S®AVS100 audio/video processing plat-forms. The R&S®AVS100 base unit provides all core func-tions, which are enabled via option keys.

R&S®AVS100 audio/video processing platformThe R&S®AVS100 audio/video processing platform is the core component of the R&S®AVHE100 encoding and mul-tiplexing solution. Easy installation and upgrades, low operating costThe signal flow for the various input signals such as ASI, SDI, AES or the 10 MHz reference clock is fully IP-based throughout the R&S®AVHE100 system. The R&S®AVHE100 uses robust standard components and Ethernet cabling, which simplifies installation and maintenance. Since the core functions of the R&S®AVHE100 are software-based, system upgrades and modifications can in many cases be implemented by acquiring additional option keys – without any hardware extensions. For example, DVB-T can be up-graded to DVB-T2 with a simple option key. The integration of extensive functionality into a powerful IT processing platform also means lower power consumption. This re-sults in lower dissipated heat, which further reduces oper-ating costs, such as for air-conditioning. With its high level of integration, the R&S®AVHE100 saves valuable space in the equipment room, cutting down on infrastructure costs.

Innovative R&S®CrossFlowIP technologySeamless input signal switchingOn the input side, the R&S®CrossFlowIP technology allows the input signals from the main system to be used in the alternate system and vice versa. Signals are routed between the main and the alternate system via IP, making any external components such as SDI switchers or man-agement systems unnecessary. The R&S®AVHE100 auto-matically detects faulty input signals and switches seam-lessly to the alternate signal. As a result, no switching operation becomes necessary in the downstream process-ing chain, and the transmit signal continues undisturbed. Unlike traditional redundancy concepts, the R&S®AVHE100 switches to the input signal alternate system automati-cally. This reduces system complexity and significantly decreases integration effort during commissioning.

Built-in frame synchronizer and format converterThe R&S®AVHE100 includes a software-based frame syn-chronizer that auto matically matches up the video signals, allowing a clean switchover at the frame level. Using the R&S®CrossFlowIP technology, the signals are distributed to the various R&S®AVS100 devices fully over IP. This elimi-nates the need for external frame synchronizers and SDI switchers required in conventional systems, substantially reducing system complexity and cost.

The R&S®AVHE100 allows users to convert input signal formats to configurable target formats. Video signals can be converted from interlaced to progressive format ( de-interlacing, e.g. from 1080i to 1080p), and the pic-ture resolution can be changed (scaling, e.g. from 720p to 1080p). External format converters – which intro-duce additional errors during signal feed, substantially add to costs and represent a single point of failure – are eliminated.

Seamless output signal switchingOn the output side, the R&S®CrossFlowIP technology permits seamless switching between the main and the alternate system. The seamless switching functionality implemented in the R&S®AVHE100 also provides synchro-nization of the main and the alternate path. In conven-tional systems, this functionality is provided by an external device, increasing system complexity and requiring inte-gration into a higher-level management system. The use of the R&S®CrossFlowIP technology, on the other hand, ensures that the main and alternate transport streams ap-plied to the modulator via IP (SMPTE 2022-1/-2) or ASI are always bit and time synchronous, so that the modulator can switch between these signals seamlessly without in-terrupting transmission. This is a vital prerequisite espe-cially for terrestrial transmitter systems configured as sin-gle-frequency networks (SFN) because, if the modulation for these transmitters is not time synchronous, the signal will be disrupted and resynchronizing all transmitters will cause an outage of several minutes.

Automated, seamless software updatingThe R&S®AVHE100 has an integrated update function that makes it possible to perform automated, incremental soft-ware updates on all devices in the system without inter-rupting transmission. In an N+1 system, software updates installed on the various devices (including encoders, multi-plexers, network adapters) are transferred to the alternate devices in an intelligent, step-by-step process during live transmission. The entire process is centrally controlled and monitored via the HMS. The R&S®CrossFlowIP technology and the fully IP-based signal routing ensure that no service is interrupted and that the transport streams are generated seamlessly. The overall process can be performed in sev-eral substeps; the operator retains complete control of the update.
