Safe Harbor Notice

This presentation describes features that are under development by MicroStrategy. The objective of this presentation is to provide insight into

MicroStrategy’s technology direction. The functionalities described herein may or may not be released as shown.

This presentation contains statements that may constitute “forward-looking statements” for purposes of the safe harbor provisions under the

Private Securities Litigation Reform Act of 1995, including estimates of future technology releases. Forward-looking statements inherently

involve risks and uncertainties that could cause actual results of MicroStrategy Incorporated and its subsidiaries (collectively, the “Company”)

to differ materially from the forward-looking statements.

Factors that could contribute to such differences include: the Company’s ability to develop, market and deliver on a timely and cost-effective

basis new or enhanced offerings that respond to technological change or new customer requirements; delays in the Company’s ability to

develop or ship new products; the extent and timing of market acceptance of MicroStrategy’s new offerings; continued acceptance of the

Company’s other products in the marketplace; competitive factors; general economic conditions; and other risks detailed in the Company’s

registration statements and periodic reports filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission. By making these forward-looking

statements, the Company undertakes no obligation to update these statements for revisions or changes after the date of this presentation.

We’d have the data the way we want it The nature and structure of data would never change

Our users would be happy with a predefined set of applications

In a perfect world #1 (according to some IT departments)

A beautifully structured data warehouse with clean data at the lowest grain going back years. All operational applications would conform to the enterprise reporting model.

Or if they do, they do so very slowly to give us time to update our beautiful data warehouse in a proper software engineering way.

We’d spend years evolving the applications, making sure change is managed at all levels. Our users would know the data and would not expect to ask for anything out of the ordinary

We’d have any data we want We’d change our designs and our minds all the time

We’d provide our users with new and innovative ways of looking at data

In a perfect world #2 (according to some User departments)

A core data warehouse with the common backbone hierarchies would suffice. We’d then hang any data we like on this warehouse to explore new insights.

Because our competitors never stand still, because the world changes rapidly, we need to be quick and precise to fit our offering with the times.

We’d be able to conduct exploration sessions with business users and find the best way to visualise and share data. We could capture the session findings and share them, without commissioning projects.

After much effort, data warehouses are maturing.Developer led applications are reaching thousands of users.Data is multiplying in scale and complexity.Business users are bypassing IT with their own tools.Data discovery, machine learning, natural language query are gaining prominence.

Compromise and Context

The Compromise: Neither world vision is practical. In reality, it’s about managing the blend of governed data within an explosion of exploration and new data stories.

The Context: In addition, you must consider the environment where MicroStrategy applications exist today:

Complexity and scale are increasing

Back to our main topic

Dossiers and Documents are vectors for sharing information

Documents and Dossiers address both worlds

You’ll see that they exist at different points on the agility and governance spectra. Thus, they permit the widening of an adoption net for an enterprise deployment of MicroStrategy.

Yet they share the same data source flexibility, the same security model, and the delivery device capability.

It’s possible to view Documents and Dossiers as competing technologies. With experience, it’s turning out that these two are complementary, and can significantly increase the analytical and discovery capability of an organisation, whilst providing a path to industrial scale and governance.

In the next slides, we’ll explore the differences, and then we’ll look at use cases with both technologies deployed.

Just to be quite clear…What do we mean by Report Services Document (RSD) ?

A Report Services Document can be created from Web or, less frequently, from Developer.

It has an extensive design interface permitting elaborate structures, exquisitely precise design and possibly transactions

This results in fully-functional applications where the inquiry flow is guided and the data stories fit a precise business scenario.

Just to be quite clear…What do we mean by Dossier ?

A Dossier is created either via Web, via Desktop or via Workstation.

Its streamlined interface permits data exploration with in-built import facilities from many sources.

This promotes rapid visualisation of data and generation of new insights with a free-form query mode.

Achieving the best of both worlds

Getting Started

• More than ever, you should always start with a Dossier.• Getting the data story straight with the end user saves much

rework.• You might, or might not, migrate the application from a Dossier

to a Document. This depends on what the application needs to do.

• You can deploy Dossiers to production. You simply need to ensure the data sources are available. Thus you might not need to convert your Dossiers to Documents.

Last year : Documents with Dossiers !

Monolithic applications are a thing of the past. Many organisations implement Landing Pages. These are documents, usually data-driven and heavily branded, that direct the user towards applications addressing precise use cases.

Each application has, itself, a landing page – usually a summary of the key indicators that provide overall context for the use case. This can be a document or a dossier, depending on the functionality requirement

The next level down can consist of documents, if required functionality demands it and if the exploration path is firmly set – or it can be a dossier, giving the end user freedom to explore the provided data, thus answering far more user stories.

• Dossiers and documents can be deployed

identically using MicroStrategy’s lifecycle

tools.

• Both technologies allow you to address a

much bigger audience.

• Making sure the data is available in

production systems without user intervention is the real challenge.

• Investment has taken place to boost

Dossier performance leading to

performance parity with Documents

Thoughts to take away

• Dossiers evolving rapidly.• Library and Collaboration extend adoption.• HyperIntelligence gives frictionless, targeted

insights.• Technologies are complementary.• Existing investment preserved.• Exciting possibilities with new features.
