U.S. OPEN CUP QUARTERFINAL – RSL @ FC DALLAS – TUESDAY, JULY 12, 2011

METROPLEX MISERY FOR RSL: This May‟s scoreless

draw at Pizza Hut Park might be the best-ever RSL performance in Dallas, despite the two-hour lightning delay and a paucity of offensive opportunity for either team … Despite the lightning and last year‟s Morales ejection during the postseason, RSL remembers Dallas for late heroics (Dominic Oduro), fantastic bombs from distance (Chris Gbandi, Arturo Alvarez) and a consolation penalty kick (Freddy Adu) … The list of all-time results in North Texas:

Real Salt Lake vs. FC Dallas

PLAYOFF FAILING IN FRISCO: In last year‟s

postseason meeting at Pizza Hut Park, FW Fabian Espindola set up RSL with a dream start in the first leg of the 2010 MLS Cup Playoff Western Conference Semifinals, scoring on a curling blast in the 7

th minute …

But victory was not in the cards, as RSL suffered its sixth 1-2 loss at Pizza Hut Park in nine all-time attempts, with Dallas scoring goals at the death in each half to take the one-goal aggregate lead … Dallas sub Eric Avila scored a stunning goal in the 88

th

minute to give the home side a dramatic win, as Avila found the back of the net on his first touch barely a minute after coming on … After Espindola‟s curling blast inside the left post from the edge of the area set up RSL early, it was former RSL striker and nemesis Jeff Cunningham skipping through a trio of RSL defenders in the penalty area and hammering a shot under Rimando … Each team was left a man down with a six-minute span in the second half, RSL's Javier Morales sent off with a second caution, and FCD's Atiba Harris after a high elbow in a midfield challenge … That set the stage for Avila, who picked up the ball in midfield and after a long run let fly with a searing drive from outside the box for the Dallas win …

SATURDAY NIGHT SPECIAL – RSL REWIND: Real

Salt Lake went a long way in climbing back to the top of the Western Conference table Saturday night, the Utah side knocking off rival FC Dallas 2-0 in front of 17,734 fans at Rio Tinto Stadium … After a scoreless – and physical – first half in Sandy, Real Salt Lake (8-3-6, 30 pts; 4th in West) broke the deadlock against FC Dallas (10-5-4, 34 pts.; 2nd in West) just moments into the second half when MF Andy Williams connected from range to beat GK Kevin Hartman, who bobbled the dipping shot and couldn‟t corral the ball before it trickled over the goal line … Dallas would have a golden chance to equalize in the 84th minute, when a run from MF Brek Shea would bring RSL GK Nick Rimando out of position … After making a run into the box, Shea left the ball off for MF Jackson in front of an open net, only to see his teammate tap the ball towards goal before DF Chris Wingert raced in to make a goal line save to keep RSL‟s 1-0 lead intact … The home side would seal the victory in stoppage time, when MF Will Johnson would connect with FW Fabian Espíndola to put the game out of reach … Upon receiving the pass from Johnson, Espindola was able to shake the Dallas defense and beat Hartman near-post in the closing moments of the match for his team-leading sixth goal in MLS play this season …

• Williams‟ goal in the 47th minute was his second of the season and his first in 13 MLS regular season games, his previous tally coming during the 4-1 win over LA at home back on March 26; • Kyle Beckerman assisted Williams on the opening goal, giving the RSL captain his team-high fourth assist this season, breaking a tie with MF Collen Warner in the category … It was Beckerman‟s third helper in as many games, following up on his pair of assists in RSL‟s 3-1 win over Toronto FC two weekends ago on June 25; • Espíndola‟s stoppage time goal pushed his team-high goal total in MLS play to six … The red-hot Argentine striker has now scored in back-to-back games and found the back of the net five times in his last seven league appearances; • The shutout was RSL‟s ninth in league play this season and Nick Rimando‟s eighth of 2011, with the last clean-sheet coming on June 22 in a scoreless draw at Chicago … Rimando trails only his opposite number from Dallas, Kevin Hartman (9), by one for the league lead in shutouts … The clean sheet also marked the first time Dallas has failed to score since the club hosted RSL back on May 22, when the two sides played to a scoreless draw … Rimando (82) and Hartman (101) are also 1-2 on the League‟s career shutout list …

U.S. OPEN CUP QUARTERFINAL – RSL @ FC DALLAS – TUESDAY, JULY 12, 2011

“THIS IS YOUR LIFE, JASON KREIS”: For RSL Head

Coach Jason Kreis, the eight days from July 4-12, 2011 mark a walk down memory lane, starting with the July 4 post-game retirement of the iconic #9 jersey worn for RSL (and earlier for Dallas) by one of Major League Soccer‟s pioneers … Jason‟s family, friends and his legendary youth coach, Gary Williamson, who now calls North Texas home, were all on hand for the occasion … On Saturday, July 9, RSL defeated Kreis‟ former team, FC Dallas, 2-0 in a critical match for RSL in the Supporters Shield race, before heading to the MetroPlex for Tuesday‟s Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup game at Pizza Hut Park … Kreis played nine seasons in Dallas, winning the MLS MVP Award in 1999, becoming the first American-born player to do (and one of only three in the League‟s first 15 years) … Both of Kreis‟ sons – Jake and Kason – were born in Dallas, where Jason scored 91 of his 108 career goals, and helped bring the Burn its lone title of any kind, the 1997 U.S. Open Cup … Kreis teammates on that Burn squad that hoisted the Dewar Trophy? – current RSL GM Garth Lagerwey and current RSL Assistant Coach Jeff Cassar …

JASON KREIS WEEK KICKED OFF POST-GAME:

RSL Founder Dave Checketts and Co-Owner Dell Loy Hansen joined members of the Kreis family and other figures from the legendary striker‟s soccer career to share their memories of RSL‟s first-ever player, Original Captain and second-ever Head Coach … After signing with Real Salt Lake on November 17, 2004 (acquired from Dallas for future considerations), Kreis became the most iconic figure in Real Salt Lake’s now seven-year history, with his milestones on the playing field in Claret-and-Cobalt from 2005-2007 including scoring the first goal in club history on April 9, 2005 (vs. LA) and becoming the first MLS player to score 100 goals in league play (Aug. 13, 2005 vs. KC) … Kreis would give up the captain‟s armband and hang up his cleats for good on May 3, 2007, as the League’s all-time leading scorer with 108 career goals, making a player‟s ultimate sacrifice by going from the field to the sideline in order to become Real Salt Lake‟s second-ever head coach … Now in his fifth season as RSL‟s sideline boss, the Omaha, Neb., native has flourished in the role, the Utah side‟s steady ascension from league doormat to MLS powerhouse … Highlights include Kreis leading the team to its first postseason berth in 2008, becoming the youngest coach to win an MLS Cup title in 2009, and helping the squad to unprecedented heights for an MLS team by reaching the Finals of the 2010/11 CONCACAF Champions League this past April …

KREIS BURNED UP THE DALLAS NETS : RSL Head

Coach Jason Kreis is FC Dallas‟ all-time leader in every significant scoring and service category, leading RSL against the team for which he played 247 games from 1996-2004 and won the League‟s 1999 MVP award, becoming the first-ever American-born player to do so … RSL Assistant Coach Jeff Cassar also played and coached for Dallas at various stints between 1996-2007, while RSL GM Garth Lagerwey joined Kreis and Cassar for Dallas‟ lone championship – the 1997 U.S. Open Cup side … RSL Assistant Coach Miles Joseph also played in Dallas during the 2001 MLS season … On the field, current RSL M/F Arturo Alvarez scored 11 goals in 76 games for Dallas from 2005-08, years which included several appearances in the U.S. Open Cup, Alvarez appearing in both of Dallas‟ finals, scoring a goal in 2007 …

RSL’s BIG D CONNECTIONS: While Kreis‟ exploits in

the old Dallas Burn black-and-red are well-documented, the new-era FC Dallas “Hoops” have shed ¾ of their once-decidedly RSL feel as the organization‟s inaugural head coach, John Ellinger, is Dallas‟ top assistant … Ellinger posted a 15-37-16 record from 2005-07 in Salt Lake, while Cunningham scored 19 goals and added 11 assists in 38 games in 2006-07, becoming the only RSL player to earn MLS Best XI honors for his 16-goal 2006 campaign … Harris posted 4 goals and 2 assists in 43 games for RSL from 2006-07 … Last year, former RSL forwards Jeff Cunningham and Atiba Harris regularly started for Dallas, but both moved on this past offseason … Injured DF Kyle Davies also enjoyed a brief membership with RSL prior to being traded to Dallas last year, and waived by the “Hoops” earlier this season …

FC DALLAS STREAK-SNAPPERS: During last year‟s

MLS Cup title defense, RSL dropped just two of its 26 league games after May 1, posting a mark of 14-2-10 and outscoring opponents 39-14 – with the lone losses both coming at Dallas on July 17 and Oct. 30 … Prior to the first DAL loss, RSL was enjoying a 10-game unbeaten streak in MLS play, while another streak – 14 games without a loss – was snapped in Leg 1 of the West Semifinal Series at Dallas …

RETURNING THE FAVOR: Real Salt Lake, on the other

hand, snapped FC Dallas‟ MLS-record 19-game unbeaten streak last October at Rio Tinto Stadium, Schellas‟ Hyndman‟s team not losing since mid-May … In Dallas‟s last visit to the Wasatch Front, the team drew RSL 1-1 in the second leg of the 2010 MLS Cup Playoff Quarterfinals to win 3-2 on aggregate …

U.S. OPEN CUP QUARTERFINAL – RSL @ FC DALLAS – TUESDAY, JULY 12, 2011

OPEN CUP ROAD POSSIBLE RETURN TO CCL: For

the first time since 2006, Real Salt Lake participates in the official Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup tourney, after failing to emerge from MLS qualifying rounds in 2007-10 … As has been the case in recent years, the 2011 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup Champion receives entry into the preliminary round for the 2012/13 edition of CONCACAF Champions League … All-time in Open Cup-related play, RSL is just 4-6-1, scoring 20 goals and conceding 22 … Against lower-division teams, RSL is now 2-1-0 in Open Cup action, losing 4-6 at Minnesota in 2005 (despite a Jason Kreis hat trick) before defeating the USL Virginia Beach Mariners 2-1 at home in 2006 … Both games went 120 minutes after being tied in regulation …

THE RING IS THE THING: While Real Salt Lake might

not have seen much success during its first six runs in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup, that doesn‟t mean some of its roster has not had the chance to lift the coveted Dewar Trophy before … Rookie RSL Assistant Coach C.J. Brown won an incredible four U.S. Open Cup titles during his 13-year career with the Chicago Fire, in 1998, 2000, 2003 and 2006 … One of his teammates in 2003 – MF Andy Williams – is the lone remaining “RSL Original” from the team‟s 2005 expansion year … Williams won a ring in 2003 with the Fire, as did MF Ned Grabavoy during his rookie season in LA in 2005 … A trio of RSL Technical Staff members – GM Garth Lagerwey, Head Coach Jason Kreis & Asst. Coach Jeff Cassar – were all members of the 1997 U.S. Open Cup-winning Dallas Burn … RSL Captain Kyle Beckerman and GK Nick Rimando each played for the ring with the 2000 Miami Fusion, which lost in the final to Brown and Chicago … M/F Arturo Alvarez lost two USOC finals with Dallas, in 2005 and 2007, the Salvadoran National Teamer scoring in the ‟07 Final … In all, the five current RSL players have helped their teams make a combined 10 LHUSOC Final appearances …

Current RSL Open Cup finalists (*won title):

M/F Arturo Alvarez: 2005 (DAL), 2007 (DAL)

MF Ned Grabavoy: 2005 (LA)*

MF Kyle Beckerman: 2000 (MIA)

GK Nick Rimando: 2000 (MIA)

MF Andy Williams: 1998 (CLB), 2000 (MIA), 2001 (NE), 2003 (CHI)*, 2004 (CHI)

OPEN CUP ROAD CONTINUES: For RSL to achieve its

goal of utilizing an Open Cup title as a means back to the CONCACAF Champions League, it will have to emerge victorious in four games, including last Tuesday‟s 2-0 win against Wilmington … RSL is now paired on July 12 in the Quarterfinal Round against MLS rival FC Dallas … and would host the Semifinal on Aug. 30 against the LA/Seattle winner … The LHUSOC Final is slated for October 4, with the RSL/DAL v LA/SEA winner facing NY/CHI/KC or Richmond) …

ALL YOU WANTED TO KNOW ABOUT THE OPEN

CUP, BUT WERE AFRAID TO ASK: Dating back to

1914, the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup is the oldest cup competition in United States soccer and is among the oldest in the world … Open to all affiliated amateur and professional teams in the United States, the annual U.S. Open Cup is a 97-year-old single-elimination tournament … The U.S. Open Cup is similar to domestic cup competitions popular throughout Europe, South America and the rest of the world … Cup competitions, which usually run concurrent with a country‟s league season, are open in the early stages to any club that can qualify, giving local amateur teams a chance to compete against the best teams a country has to offer … This year again guarantees the “David vs. Goliath” match-ups tournament fans have desired, as the eight MLS teams which advance to the 40-team tournament proper will take on survivors from the USL and amateur ranks during the competition‟s “Round of 16” in mid-June … Since its inception in 1996, Major League Soccer teams have won 14 of the last 15 U.S. Open Cup titles …

MLS TEAMS IN THE “PRO ERA” OPEN CUP:

YOU GOTTA FOLLOW THE RULES … In the Lamar

Hunt U.S. Open Cup, some rules and regulations differ from the MLS regular season … Should a match finish tied at the end of regulation, the game will go to a 30-minute added time session (split into two 15-minute halves) which will be played in their entirety (i.e., NO golden goals) … Should the added time period not yield any scores, the match will be decided by the traditional “kicks from the penalty spot” tiebreaker as mandated per FIFA guidelines …

U.S. OPEN CUP QUARTERFINAL – RSL @ FC DALLAS – TUESDAY, JULY 12, 2011

IN SEARCH OF A TROPHY: In its history, Real Salt

Lake has registered a 4-6-1 all-time Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup record (20 GF / 22 GA) in the competition‟s games/qualifiers across 2005-10 … That record includes five qualifiers: last June‟s 1-2 (aet) loss at D.C. United; last April‟s 3-3 draw (5-3 PKs to advance) at San Jose; the 1-4 road loss at Seattle to the eventual Open Cup champions; and 2008‟s 4-0 home win over then-expansion Earthquakes and the subsequent 0-2 loss @ Columbus … As RSL continues on its possible four-game road to the 2011 title, following is a year-by-year rundown of RSL‟s previous runs in U.S. Soccer‟s national championship tourney: 2010: Despite entering the year as the defending MLS Cup Champions, RSL was forced on the road to pursue Open Cup hardware due to its 11-12-7 regular-season MLS mark in 2009 … Last April 14 at San Jose, RSL stormed out to a 2-0 lead at Buck Shaw Stadium with goals by FW Robbie Findley and MF Nelson Gonzalez, but it was former Earthquake and current RSL player Arturo Alvarez that led the SJ comeback, scoring in the 88‟ to force overtime and assisting on a goal in 103‟ to give the „Quakes the lead … RSL battled back in OT, DF Nat Borchers heading home a Robbie Russell cross in the 118‟ to force PKs, where RSL won 5-3, GK Kyle Reynish saving the Alvarez effort in the 1

st frame to make the difference …

Last June, RSL played at RFK Stadium against D.C. United to determine the final MLS spot in the Open Cup proper, just days before visiting the White House to celebrate its MLS Cup win in 2009 … With FW Robbie Findley away at the World Cup, captain Kyle Beckerman and perennial starters Andy Williams and Chris Wingert unavailable, RSL started a 4-5-1 with new faces and players in new positions … After a scoreless first 60 minutes, both sides wilting in extreme heat and humidity, RSL inserted MF Javier Morales, FW Fabian Espindola and FW Alvaro Saborio in the 63‟ to inject life into the RSL attack, switching back to the 4-4-2 diamond … D.C. scored first, however, on a 75‟ PK, as rookie MF Collen Warner was adjudged to have handled a Chris Pontius shot following a stellar Reynish save … RSL MF Will Johnson answered back with a PK of his own just 8 minutes later, and the sides went to extra time … Teenage RSL MF Luis Gil made his debut for the squad entering to start the OT, but it was another teen phenom – United‟s Andy Najar – that came on for the final 15 minutes and provided the goal that sent D.C. on to the tourney proper … 2009: RSL kicked off its qualifying road for the 2009 LHUSOC at Starfire Complex in Tukwila, WA, the Sounders‟ training field … Expansion Seattle won a coin toss to host RSL, the Western Conference finalist from the year prior … The Sounders scored goals three minutes apart – in each half – to tally a 4-1 win over RSL, Sebastian LeToux tallying two goals and two assists … MF Will Johnson scored an unassisted goal in the 32

nd minute to cut the Sounders lead

in half after goals by LeToux (24‟) and Sanna Nyassi (26‟), but Roger Levesque (53‟) and LeToux (55‟) followed up in the 2

nd half …

2008: RSL kicked off its qualifying prospects for the 2008 U.S. Open Cup with a dominating, 4-0 late-April win at Rice-Eccles, as RSL MF Kyle Beckerman got the ball rolling with goals in the 21

st and 33

rd minutes … RSL would then punish

the „Quakes off the kick-off seconds later, as FW Yura Movsisyan converted the turnover into RSL‟s second goal inside the minute to put the game out of reach … RSL MF Andy Williams made sure he maintained his Open Cup scoring mastery, slotting home in the 90

th minute to close out

the scoring … GK Chris Seitz saw his initial first-team action of 2008 and recorded his first career clean sheet with his four-save effort … A month later in Columbus, Crew goals by Steven Lenhart (26‟) and Robbie Rogers (53‟) sandwiched around a 49

th-minute Dema Kovalenko red card ended

RSL‟s 2008 Open Cup chances … 2007: RSL kicked off its run to the 2007 U.S. Open Cup on by taking a 2-1 overtime victory over the Kansas City Wizards in a “play-in” contest … A Jeff Cunningham penalty kick a dozen minutes in appeared as if it would stand tall, but a goal by KC‟s Sasha Victorine in the 88

th minute

would send the match to added extra time … In the game‟s 109

th minute, Andy Williams again was the hero, finishing a

nifty give-and-go from 15 yards out to lift RSL … In the next round, however, for the second consecutive season, RSL‟s Open Cup run ended at the hands of the hated Colorado Rapids, as two Jacob Peterson goals, including one 3 minutes into stoppage time, led the Rapids to a 2-1 win over RSL … Chris Klein scored the 64

th-minute equalizer in

Jason Kreis‟ Open Cup coaching debut, but it wasn‟t enough to send the game into OT … 2006: Real Salt Lake saw added time once again in its 2006 USOC opener against another USL-1 side, Virginia Beach Mariners, but this time it was RSL getting the goal in overtime, as Andy Williams’ 93

rd-minute strike lifted the

MLS side to a 2-1 win in the Third Round, marking its first-ever USOC victory … RSL‟s run would be a short one, as the Utah side had the better of the play at home against Rocky Mountain Cup rival Colorado, but the Rapids‟ Peterson got the only goal in a 1-0 win in a 4

th Round affair

… 2005: RSL saw its inaugural run in the 2005 Open Cup end abruptly, as tournament upstart Minnesota Thunder overcame a Jason Kreis hat trick – the only 3-goal performance in RSL history in all competitions, prior to Robbie Findley‟s effort in April „09 – to post a wild 6-4 upset in a Third Round match the USL First Division side took to a 30-minute added time session thanks to an 88

th minute

equalizer …

U.S. OPEN CUP QUARTERFINAL – RSL @ FC DALLAS – TUESDAY, JULY 12, 2011

NO REPEAT FOR RIOT ROMP OVER REVS: Real

Salt Lake had enjoyed unparalleled success in recent years against the New England Revolution … RSL romped the visiting Revs in each of the last two visits to Rio Tinto Stadium, 6-0 in 2009 and 5-0 in 2010, the two largest margins of victory in RSL history … Monday‟s dramatic, come-from-behind 3-3 draw was certainly marred by the 3‟ Nat Borchers red card and the trio of Revolution goals scored on set pieces (PK, direct free kick and indirect free kick) … All-time, RSL is now 6-4-4 against the Revs, after dropping the first two meetings back in 2005 … Aggregate scoreline in the 14 games: 28-18 … July 4 marked the 200

th regular-season MLS match for RSL, the team

posting a 64-79-57 mark through its first six-and-a-half seasons, being outscored -10 on goal +/- (255/265) …

TWO-GOAL COMEBACKS: Real Salt Lake emerged

with a point on July 4 for the sixth time in club history after spotting the opposition a two-goal lead … Four of the six 2-goal comebacks have occurred at home, with three of the four happening as precursors to the Independence Day or Pioneer Day fireworks shows … This week‟s NE comeback was the second to occur on July 4, as former captain Jason Kreis tallied a 90‟ PK v NY to salvage a 2-2 draw … In last year‟s regular-season finale at rival Colorado, Saborio scored twice in second-half stoppage time to retain the Rocky Mountain Cup for holders RSL … The only win of the six came against Dallas … In 2009, RSL stormed back from a 0-2 deficit at halftime to visiting Dallas on Pioneer Day to score four in an incredible second half, which saw GK Nick Rimando stone a Jeff Cunningham PK and Yura Movsisyan notch a 2

nd-half

brace … The list:

7/4/2005 v NY: T 2-2 RSL: Trembly (78) Kreis (90);

MET: Razov (44) Magee (48)

10/8/2005 @ SJ: T 2-2 RSL: Novak (64) Williams (73);

07/24/2009 v DAL: W 4-2 RSL: Movsisyan (55,90) Findley (62) own goal (88);

DAL: Cunningham (13) van den Bergh (21)

10/23/2010 @ COL: T 2-2 RSL: Saborio (90,90);

COL: Cummings (16) Casey (50)

07/04/2011 v NE: T 3-3 RSL: Johnson (24) Saborio (56) Espindola (83);

NE: Lekic (4) Tierney (16) Joseph (63)

WIN OVER DALLAS MAKES SIX STRAIGHT:

Real Salt Lake‟s win Saturday enabled the team to extend its unbeaten run to six MLS games, the current streak marking the club‟s third-longest stretch without a loss in team history … The only longer streak occurred last year, when single-season runs of 10 and 14 games for Jason Kreis‟ team without a loss, the latter extended to 18 with its hot regular-season start this year:

TEAM STK START END

RSL has already reached seven unbeaten in all competitions, winning its 2011 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup debut on June 28 with a 2-0 win over the visiting Wilmington Hammerheads … RSL travels to Dallas on July 12 for the Open Cup QuarterFinal at Pizza Hut Park …

YELLOW-CARD PERIL NOW A CONCERN: Now is

the time of the season when yellow-card caution accumulation is added to injuries and national team duty as reasons to force lineup shuffling, with RSL MF Will Johnson one caution away from the first suspension threshold (5 yellow cards) … By staying out of the officials‟ book July 4 vs. NE and Saturday vs Dallas, Johnson is eligible to earn the League‟s “Good Behavior” incentive, which slashes one caution from his total … Should Johnson go three consecutive MLS games without a yellow card (July 16 @ VAN will complete the trifecta), he will see a caution scrubbed from his record … DF Chris Wingert, DF Robbie Russell and M/F Jean Alexandre are each TWO cautions away from suspension …

BORCHERS RETURNS AFTER 3’ EJECTION: Nat

Borchers‟ ejection in the 3‟ of the July 4 game was the earliest red card in RSL team history, five minutes ahead of the Jack Stewart ejection back on August 26, 2006, at Giants Stadium in NY … In that game, RSL made it to halftime tied 0-0, but allowed an Edson Buddle hat trick in a 21-minute span of the 2

nd half, with another three goals

scored during the final 45 minutes …

Page 9: RSL-GameNotes_07-12-11@DAL_LHUSOC.pdf

U.S. OPEN CUP QUARTERFINAL – RSL @ FC DALLAS – TUESDAY, JULY 12, 2011

OTHER RED CARD MISCELLANY: In its history, RSL

has never played with just nine men due to disciplinary issues, and has now scored SEVEN short-handed goals (Jason Kreis, 7/4/05 v. NY; Chris Klein & Kreis, 9/16/06 v. DAL; a Chris Leitch own-goal on 7/3/09 v. SJ; Nelson Gonzalez late goal on 5/28/11 v. SEA; and the Johnson/Saborio goals Monday) … All-time, RSL now has been victim of 30 red cards, succumbing to a -9 goal difference in a total of 632 minutes playing a man down … Incredibly, SIX of those nine goals came in one game, the 0-6 loss @NY in August 2006 when DF Jack Stewart was tossed in the 8

th minute

SEEING RED, BUT TO LITTLE ADVANTAGE:

Back on May 7, Real Salt Lake saw an opponent hit with multiple red cards for the third time in the team’s now 200-game MLS regular-season history, with the 65-minute span with at least a one-man advantage the longest in club annals … For an incredible amount of 49 minutes, RSL enjoyed a TWO-MAN advantage over Chivas USA, playing 11-v-9 in deadlocked fashion prior to Will Johnson’s victory-clinching goal in the 87

th minute … On only one

prior occasion – Oct. 18, 2008, in the 2nd

-ever game at Rio Tinto Stadium – had RSL enjoyed a 2-man advantage over its opponent, but that was just for stoppage time of the team‟s 3-1 victory over FC Dallas, a game known primarily for Johnson‟s 2008 MLS Goal of the Year blast … On 25 occasions, RSL opponents have been subject to ejection, giving the Claret-and-Cobalt a total of 424 minutes with a man-advantage … During those minutes, RSL has seen a +9 goal difference …

REVS’ HISTORIC TRIFECTA: According to the Elias

Sports Bureau, New England‟s trio of goals on July 4 marked the first time in 48 games that RSL had allowed more than two goals, the longest streak in MLS history … RSL had not conceded three or more goals to a league opponent since Sept. 26, 2009 in an 0-3 loss at Dallas … The previous time RSL allowed three goals at home to an MLS side? … A span of 56 regular-season games dating back to October 6, 2007, in a 2-3 loss to Chivas USA, that year‟s Western Conference #1 seed …

RSL “BRACING” FOR SUCCESS: With FW Alvaro

Saborio‟s two-goal „brace‟ on June 28 vs TOR, RSL has now seen 19 of its 29 multi-goal performances occur at home in its 201-game MLS regular-season game, 12-game CCL and 12-game Open Cup histories … The multi-goal game was Saborio‟s 6

th cross all competitions, ahead

of Jeff Cunningham (5) and Javier Morales‟ tie with Robbie Findley with four “braces,” while Yura Movsisyan and Jason Kreis each had 2, ahead of Paulo Junior, Will Johnson, Kyle Beckerman, Atiba Harris, Chris Brown and Fabian Espíndola, who have each also scored 2 or more times in a game … When an RSL player scores 2 or more goals in a game, the team has posted a 20-3-4 all-time mark … Besides the 4-5 loss at Cruz Azul in CCL play and the 4-6 loss at Minnesota in Open Cup action, when was the lone MLS loss? … June 17, 2007, when Chris Brown‟s brace @LA was wasted in a 2-3 loss: G Player Date Opponent Result

U.S. OPEN CUP QUARTERFINAL – RSL @ FC DALLAS – TUESDAY, JULY 12, 2011

DEFENSE STILL DOMINATES … : Led by GK Nick

Rimando, the 2010 MLS Best XI center-back pairing of DF Nat Borchers and DF Jamison Olave and Captain Kyle Beckerman, the vaunted RSL defense has allowed one goal or fewer in 14 of its 17 MLS games this season, allowing 12 goals thus far, including three on PKs … Last year, RSL allowed just 20 goals in the 30-game regular season, setting a new standard in MLS annals and breaking the 2007 Houston Dynamo record … Rimando recorded his 82

nd career shutout on July 9 vs

DAL, 46 of which have now come in the RSL Claret-and-Cobalt … Rimando has eight of RSL‟s nine MLS clean sheets in 2011 (Reynish, April 9 @ NE), trailing Dallas‟ total of 10 (Kevin Hartman) … Rimando also had two shutouts in CONCACAF play earlier this year at Columbus and v Saprissa, while Reynish tallied the clean sheet in the 2011 Open Cup debut against Wilmington …

ATTACK PICKING UP STEAM: Due to the onslaught

of injuries, suspension and Gold Cup duty, and despite scoring multiple goals in their last three games, RSL has still scored only 14 goals in the 11 games played since MF Javier Morales went down, after scoring a league-high 45 goals in 2010 …

Kreis has continually praised FW Fabian Espíndola for stepping up and assuming the team‟s creative mantle in the absence of teammate and close friend Morales since the RSL talisman‟s devastating injury … On June 18 vs. D.C. United, Espindola tallied his team-high fourth goal of the season with a 38‟ PK after a United handball in the box … The goal was Fabian’s 20

th of his RSL career,

vaulting him into sole possession of 2nd

place in the RSL scoring annals with Jeff Cunningham, now 9 behind leader Robbie Findley (29) … After tacking on goals in RSL‟s last two contests – a late equalizer in the 3-3 draw with New England (July 4) and the added-time insurance tally in a 2-0 win vs. FC Dallas (July 9), Espíndola has equaled his career season-high total of six goals in just 12 contests, nearly halving the 22 games it took to accomplish the same total last season … The feisty Argentine scored twice in nine appearances during RSL’s 2010/11 CCL run, and had a blistering effort to open last year‟s MLS Cup Playoffs at Dallas, his only career postseason goal in 8 appearances …

LATE DRAMA PART OF RSL DNA: MF Will

Johnson‟s 87‟ game-winning goal vs. Chivas way back on May 7 marked the 16

th all-time go-ahead scored by RSL in

the final 15 minutes of a regular-season MLS or CCL game … Two of the three RSL goals scored prior to that – Espindola‟s 93+ game-winner v COL and Morales‟ late equalizer at Monterrey – also meet the dramatic criteria … All-time lists for equalizers and GWG (active players in bold):

TIME FOR A NEW STREAK: In Major League

Soccer‟s 16-year history, there have been 25 double-digit unbeaten regular-season streaks for its teams … Real Salt Lake’s historic 2010 season saw the squad amass runs of both 10 and 14 games, with the mid-April win vs. Colorado extending the latter streak to 18 games without a loss, one of the top three streaks in MLS history, just one game shy of matching the League standard … A year ago, FC Dallas matched the Columbus Crew’s 19-game run by not losing for 4 ½ months, then saw it crash to a halt by dropping an 0-2 decision at Rio Tinto Stadium … Dallas had the last laugh, however, ousting RSL in the teams‟ first-round MLS Cup Playoff matchup with a 3-2 aggregate win in October … The list:

MORALES A MARKED MAN IN MLS: Argentine

playmaker Javier Morales has played 116 games for RSL (93 MLS regular-season, 8 playoff, 3 Open Cup, 12 CCL) … During that time, he has been the most-fouled player in the League (reg. season only), an indicator of the target on his back by opposing defenses … The list (from 8/29/07 to 5/7/11): Player FS

talismanic Argentine Javier Morales‟ arrival on the Wasatch Front, RSL has played 37 MLS regular-season/playoff, CCL or Open Cup games without its playmaker, posting a 15-10-14 overall mark … Head Coach Jason Kreis‟ team has gone 11-9-12 in MLS reg. season play, 0-0-1 Playoff, 3-0-0 in CONCACAF and 1-1-1 in Open Cup sans Javi … Since the beginning of the 2009 season, that record is 13-7-11, including a surprising ability to score 2+ goals in 15 of those 31 games without Javier … The breakdown: DATE OPP. U.S. OPEN CUP QUARTERFINAL – RSL @ FC DALLAS – TUESDAY, JULY 12, 2011

ROAD OPTIMISM: Despite the late collapse at

Columbus and the difficult start at Philadelphia, Real Salt Lake – once the worst road team in the history of MLS – has earned points in 15 of its last 18 road games – the equivalent of an entire season – dating back to May, 2010 … The road forays have been low-scoring, as RSL has outscored opponents 14-12 goals in that span – while Jason Kreis‟ team has dropped just six of its last 28 overall if you include CONCACAF and MLS Cup Playoff road matches (and one loss, April 5 at Saprissa, still clinched the series for RSL) …

This recent advent of road success places the squad‟s all-time regular season road mark at 16-57-25 (.260; 89 GF / 164 GA) … Since Kreis took over, RSL‟s MLS road mark is 12-33-20, with the four road wins in 2010 doubling the two earned in each of the 2007-09 seasons … Seven games down (2-2-3, 9 pts), 10 to go in 2011 …

MAYDAY, MAYDAY: 12-MONTH RUN OF

SUCCESS ON MULTIPLE FRONTS: Despite the pair

of difficult 0-1 losses vs. Monterrey and at Portland in the final week of April, Real Salt Lake performed exceptionally in the 45 games played between May 1, 2010 and April 30, 2011, losing only six times in that stretch, the rough equivalent of a season-and-a-half … Across MLS regular season, MLS Cup Playoff and CONCACAF Champions League games, Jason Kreis‟ team posted an impressive mark of 26-6-13 and outscored opponents 75-33 since May 1, 2010 … RSL would have earned 91 points in this stretch … The MLS equivalents: (reg.-season games only) TEAM GAME 1 GAME 45 PTS

Los Angeles Galaxy 7/04/1997 9/02/1998 95

D.C. United 5/21/2005 7/22/2006 91

Chicago Fire 6/04/2000 9/01/2001 90

Prior to last April 30 at Portland, the lone MLS losses both came on the road at Dallas on July 17 and Oct. 30, sandwiched around the bizarre 4-5 loss at Cruz Azul … The fourth loss was the 1-2 decision at Saprissa which enabled RSL to advance to the CCL Final … RSL then dropped the 0-1 home game to Monterrey to snap the 37-game “all-competition” Rio Tinto Stadium streak …

* RSL advances 3-2 on aggregate

HOW DOES RSL GET BACK IN?: RSL probably

won‟t play another international side – exhibition or otherwise – until the 2012/13 CONCACAF tourney, which it could only qualify for through the following domestic-based mechanisms: U.S. Open Cup winner, 2011 MLS Supporters Shield winner, or MLS Cup 2011 participant … Had RSL defeated Dallas in last year‟s MLS Cup Playoff series, or even had Los Angeles advanced in place of Dallas to MLS Cup – RSL would have qualified for this year‟s CONCACAF Champions League due to LA essentially owning “dual” slots (Supp. Shield / Cup participant) and RSL finishing #2 in last year‟s overall MLS table …

RSL’S INTERNATIONAL HISTORY: With the late

April 0-1 loss to Monterrey in the 2010/11 CONCACAF Final, RSL is now 12-7-6 all-time in international contests, with a positive goal differential (43 goals for / 33 goals against) … In meaningful int‟l competition, RSL is now 6-3-3 (26 GF / 17 GA) … In the Jason Kreis era, RSL falls to 8-3-2 vs. visiting international squads (does NOT include Toronto FC league matches; however, DOES include CCL games vs Columbus) …

KREIS CONTRACT EXTENDED THRU 2013: On

March 24, RSL President Bill Manning and GM Garth Lagerwey announced that the club has extended by two years the contract of current Head Coach Jason Kreis, keeping the youngest MLS Cup-winning manager in League history on the RSL sideline through the completion of the 2013 season … All-time, Kreis now owns a 54-44-37 mark in MLS regular-season, playoff and CONCACAF Champions League play …

Under Kreis‟ leadership, RSL became the first-ever MLS team (and one of just three non-Mexican teams) to win a CONCACAF group, posting a 4-1-1 mark and becoming the first-ever MLS side to advance CCL Final … The former striker‟s 2010 side was also the second-highest-scoring team in CONCACAF‟s group stage, with 17 goals in six games (2.83 goals/game) … During MLS play in 2010, the following numbers established by RSL set or tied new single-season league standards:

fewest goals allowed (20)

overall goal differential (+25)

total home points (37)

fewest home losses (0)

fewest home goals allowed (7) In addition to those league benchmarks, last year‟s edition set franchise-high records in

wins (15)

goals (45)

scoring output (1.50/game)

points (56)

shutouts (15)

road points (19)

road goal differential (+1)

VICTORY … ERR, EQUALITY GOLD KITS?: RSL

wore its so-called “Victory Gold” 3rd

kits for the fourth time in team history at Dallas on May 22, earning road draws on each occasion … Last year, RSL drew 1-1 @ KC and 1-1 @ PHI in a pair of August games in the Real Gold uniforms, while in this season‟s lone previous display of sartorial splendor, Jason Kreis‟ team drew 2-2 at Monterrey in the first leg of the 2010/11 CCL Final … For the first time ever, the uniforms lived up to their name, RSL winning 2-0 at home on June 28 over Wilmington … Expect to see the “Equality Gold” kits continue on in Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup play and perhaps on the late September trip to New York and Washington, D.C. …

FORTRESS STOOD STRONG FOR FORTY-TWO:

With RSL‟s 1-2 loss at home May 28 against Seattle, the team saw its MLS home unbeaten streak perish at 29 games … Just a month earlier on April 27, the 0-1 CCL loss to Monterrey (MEX) last week snapped the club’s overall home unbeaten run at 37 games across MLS, CCL and exhibition play … While those two losses in a one-month span dropped RSL to 5-1-0 at home in CONCACAF play, the team remains 23-1-11 in MLS regular season, 1-0-1 playoffs and 2-0-1 in international exhibitions … The aggregate scoreline in those games?: 88-26 …

Including the recent 29-game MLS unbeaten streak at Rio Tinto Stadium, RSL has dropped just 5 of its last 65 home games (41-5-19) across MLS regular season / playoff and CONCACAF / Open Cup play dating back to the start of 2008 … Prior to that, RSL was 15-19-13 on Utah soil in MLS competition, with a -5 goal differential (60 GF / 65 GA) from 2005-07 … The 2010 RSL side was just the 2

nd MLS team to remain

unbeaten at home in an entire season, joining the 2005 SJ Earthquakes (9-0-7) … Since June „09, RSL is 20-0-8 at home in regular-season play, the longest such run in League history: TEAM # START STOP
