1RSYC MAGAZINE JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2013

Dear Fellow Members

How time flies! We are greeting

another New Year and the start of our

187th year as a club. On behalf of all

members of the RSYC Committee, may

I wish each and every one of you good

health and good fortune in 2013.

At the start of the New Year, we are

focused on the completion of the

new wing to the Marina Lodge which

is just a few months away. Latest

estimate is sometime in mid-May

2013. More details can be found in the

Development Update on page 8.

In the new wing, I do want to highlight

that five rooms on Level Two will be

set aside for members’ exclusive use.

We welcome your suggestions on

usage, along with the roof-top level

of the expanded Marina Lodge which

gives a lovely view of the surrounding

area.

Sailing-wise, we have kept up our

tradition of running the RSYC Regatta

for the 13th consecutive year last July.

This has always been a great challenge

to management as power-boaters

continue to dominate the boating

scene and genuine sailors fight hard to

keep their numbers from diminishing.

We are still looking for volunteers on

the organizing committee for Regatta

2013, so if you can spare the time,

please inform our General Manager

Mr Trachsel.

A sailing event that deserves

highlighting is the inaugural Inter-Club

Twilight Races held at the Marina

Bay area on three evenings during

the last quarter of 2012. Organised

by Singapore Sailing Federation to

promote competitive keelboat sailing

among SSF member clubs, the RSYC

is pleased to donate the Chinta

Challenge Cup 1928 from our trophy

collection as a perpetual cup for

annual competition.

In a tightly fought last race on 7

December, the club that accumulated

the best points and was declared

2012 winner was Raffles Marina. We

congratulate our friends there for their

achievement.

Our club’s long history has always

fascinated me and I am pleasantly

surprised to hear that the children

and grandchildren of past expatriate

members living abroad, do contact us

from time to time to enquire about our

Club. One such case is the grandson

of a founder member of the Group of

32 that revived our Club in July 1919,

and who is planning to visit on 16

February 2013. The illustrious founder

member was affectionately known as

“Daddy” Stevens, or to give his full

name, Hildebrand William Havelock

Stevens (1852-1942). We hope to learn

more about “Daddy” Stevens from his

grandson!

Before I close this message, may I

once again urge Members to come

more often to the Club and give it your

fullest support. These coming weeks

will see some fine events planned for

your enjoyment. Notably on Monday

11 February and Saturday 16 February,

you will see an award-winning team of

lion dancers perform at the Club. Their

acrobatic skills will amaze you! On

that happy note, I wish all our Chinese

friends Gong Xi Fa Cai.

I look forward to seeing you all at the

Club.

3RSYC MAGAZINE JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2013

Dear Members,

A new year is a new beginning. It is the time for everyone to make resolutions and plans for the year.

This also applies for the Club. In 2013, we will have the dry stack available for the full year and adding new rooms and Member facilities by end of May. This will have a positive impact on the financial results of the Club. Naturally, membership growth remains the most important target we will work towards to.

Aside from improving the financial situation of the Club, we will in 2013 embark on a drive to enhance the quality of our services. We conducted a contest among our staff to suggest slogans that would encapsulate this aim towards service excellence. I am happy to inform you that we selected a slogan that was a combination of the suggestions by Molly Tan, our Rooms & Housekeeping Manager, and Suleiman Bin Eman, our Manager at the Bridge Restaurant.

The final slogan that we have chosen is Passion for PRIDE, with PRIDE standing for Personal Responsibility In Delivering Excellence. To inculcate this aim for service excellence and Passion for PRIDE, we will be conducting contests, surveys, exercises and increased training for our staff members. We will also call on Members to participate and contribute to this drive, be it by measuring our performance, by contributing suggestions and by themselves setting a good example for our staff.

The beginning of the year is also, of course, the season to celebrate Lunar New Year. Join fellow Members at the Club and bring your family to the many special offers we have arranged for you, especially the award winning team of lion and dragon dancers.

For the romantic, there is Valentine’s Day to look forward to with a delightful dinner at the Bridge. Enjoy a beautiful evening with candle light and a surprise for your loved one.

We are also changing our approach in the Mess to bring more Members to visit. In the past months, we offered many price-driven promotions that, unfortunately, did not succeed in turning the bar into a buzzing outlet. Going forward, we move towards activity-based evenings. Come and bring your buddies for a game of darts, pool or balut on various nights.

You will find more information on our forthcoming events and activities in this magazine.

This leaves me to wish all of you who celebrate Chinese New Year, a happy and prosperous Year of the Snake.

Best wishes,

Werner TrachselGeneral Manager

6 REPUBLIC OF SINGAPORE YACHT CLUB

MARINA NEWS

Dear RSYC Members,

My name is Foo Say Juan and I am the new marina manager at the Republic of Singapore Yacht Club. I have worked in the marine industry for more than 25 years and have developed a unique set of skills and qualities that I believe will greatly assist the Club and bring it to the next level.

I began my career in the marine industry as a marine engineer where I developed skills that allowed me to specialise in the handling of sailing yachts, cruisers and dinghies maintenance. Following which, I held the positions of national sailing coach, operations manager and programme executive at Singapore Sailing Federation (SSF).

At SSF, I had to devise teaching and training programmes for sailing courses and clinics that had to be engaging and inspiring to the younger sailors. This has taught me the importance of having good structures and systems in place and one of the new systems I intend to implement at the Club is the ‘Launching & Recovery of Boats through SMS’. With this new system in place, members with boats on the dry stack will no longer have to worry that the phone lines are engaged or no one is attending to it, and the

efficiency of our berthing system will improve.

Not so long ago, I was also the marina manager at ONE°15 Marina Club. There, I was responsible for all aspects of marina operations and management of 270 wet berths and 11 mega-yacht berths. Some of my responsibilities included service and maintenance, organising special events, the management of the berths and the development of new business. In particular, I had to learn to be innovative and creative in developing new business while retaining current revenue.

As the marina manager at RSYC, I hope to apply the vast range of skills and expertise that I have obtained to help the Club achieve its desired goals. Ultimately, my goal will be to provide the best possible service I can to all the members and boaters. However, in addition to this, I would also like to fill the wet and dry berths and inject more life and fun into the Club. In order to achieve this, I intend to hold a Boaters’ Night where I would meet up with the boaters to

bring forward the sea sports calendar and implement a feedback box so that members and boaters will be able to provide constant feedback on the things they would like to see improved.

I look forward to meeting and talking to you all in theNew Year.

Yours sincerely,

Foo Say JuanMarina Manager

We are starting 2013 with a new team and new programs in our Marina operations. First, we would like to introduce our new Marina Manager, Mr Foo Say Juan, a veteran in the marine industry for close to three decades.

In his introductory message, we want to highlight two important things: his new Launch and Recovery through SMS at 9855 3841 and his first Boaters’ Night at RSYC on Friday 25 January.

Second, we want to introduce some staff who have just joined us last month, and giving support to Marina Supervisor

Anselm Pang and Marine Admin Officer Sarah Mercado.

Here is our full team and their designations on page 7. We hope to embark on a new program of improved service to all our boaters,

and ask for your continued feedback. Thank you.

DEVELOPMENT UPDATE

The construction of the new wing for the Marina Lodge is expected to be completed by the middle of May 2013. The building super structure is largely completed as we go to press. We are now evaluating the tender for the furnishing works. Work is expected to start around end January and completed by March 2013.

The Gymnasium on Level 1 will be expanded to include the space presently occupied by the Children’s Room.

The new Children’s Room will be relocated to the present Mahjong/Card Room, and this room will then be relocated to

Level 2 of the new wing and occupy one or two rooms of the 5 exclusive rooms for members’ use.

We have yet to decide what is to be the best use for the roof-top of the Marina Lodge. We are open to suggestions from members for ideas as to what activities can lay the best claim, for the benefit and enjoyment of members and their families. If you have any suggestions, please write to the Secretary RSYC. We appreciate your feedback and suggestions.

With the opening of the Marina Lodge in May 2013, members can expect some attractive soft-opening rates for members with plans to stay at the Marina Lodge. Keep a watch out for this!

Final 2 races on7 December settled the bragging rights

The final series of the Inter Club Twilight Series got underway on Friday, 7 December within scenic Marina Barrage. Much to the delight of the sailors and spectators, the weather and sailing conditions were pleasant, with steady easterly winds blowing between 8 to 12 knots. The first race of the day kicked off at approximately 5.30pm and the competition saw full-throttle action among the seven teams who participated; Raffles Marina,

The inaugural Inter-Club Twilight Series, organised and hosted by Singapore Sailing Federation, kicked off to a fine start at Marina Bay on 19 October 2012. Eight teams took part, representing various educational institutes, yacht clubs and sea sports centres in Singapore. The aim is to promote inter-club relationships and to attract more people to adopt sailing as a recreational activity.

The series of races use identical boats (a fleet of SB20s) with 3 or 4 sailors per yacht sailing at

Marina Bay. The series of six races were held over three Friday evenings, on 19 Oct, 16 Nov and 7 Dec last year. The ultimate overall winning team gets its name on the perpetual challenge trophy -- The Chinta Challenge Cup 1928 -- donated from the RSYC Trophy Collection. The eight teams in the inaugural series were Changi Sailing Club, ONE 15 Marina Club, Constant Wind SSC, RSYC, MOE SSC, SMU, Singapore Polytechnic and Raffles Marina.– The Editor

Singapore Management University, ONE15 Marina Club, Constant Wind Sea Sports Centre, Republic of Singapore Yacht Club (RSYC) and Singapore Polytechnic. The team from MOE Sea Sports Centre could not compete and hence, were scored DNC (did not compete).

Each team put up a magnificent performance in bid to claim victory, as well as the highly coveted Chinta Challenge Cup. Doing extremely well for races five and six was the substitute team from Changi Sailing Club, who were represented by the formidable trio – Tan Wearn Haw, Stanley Chan and Joshua – who all decided at the eleventh hour to race on behalf of CSC.

And it was without a doubt a brilliant move as the two wins that they comfortably secured, eventually brought them back into the top three spots on the leaderboard. At the end of the day, after the points were tabulated, CSC managed to bag home the Runner-up trophy with an incredible 16 points – beating Constant Wind SSC, who had 19 points.

All eyes were on the team from Raffles Marina, who confidently led throughout races 1 – 4, but eventually, due

to a couple of factors such as the absence of their regular skipper, Jeremy Chase, and racing against the formidable team from CSC – they did not manage to maintain their lead in both races 5 and 6, and had to settle for 2nd place.

Despite all the challenges that were thrown their way, the team from Raffles Marina still managed to claim victory for this inaugural event, thanks to the consistent wins they

achieved during the first two series of the competition.

Raffles Marina will be the first club with the bragging right to stamp their club’s name on the coveted Chinta Challenge Cup – the 84-year old prized trophy from RSYC’s collection of historical sailing trophies - which was last awarded to a sailing team in 1962.

Special thanks to the Commodore of RSYC, Mr Tan Kay Toh for gracing the event, and symbolically handing over the Chinta Challenge Cup

to Singapore Sailing Federation’s President, Dr Ben Tan, who later presented the trophies to the top three winning teams.

HERITAGE

The Chinta Challenge Cup and its donor,Mr E.W. SlightThe Chinta Challenge Cup 1928 is one of the prized trophies kept in the display cabinet of the Republic of Singapore Yacht Club (RSYC) for many years. It is listed in “Three Burgees” (page 216) as one of 80 important trophies in our possession. There is no other reference to the cup in the book, except that it was donated by Mr E.W. Slight, an active sailing member who later became Commodore of RSYC in 1939 and 1940, and again in 1946, after Singapore was liberated from Japanese Occupation (1942-45). Mr E.G. Holiday was commodore in 1941.

Raced for during 1929 to 1962, the Chinta Cup of sterling silver was won by about two dozen different yachts, a few of them winning it several times. The winners’ names are inscribed on the rear of the trophy. The first winner in 1929 was “Betsy” and the last inscribed winner was “Athene” in 1962. As a challenge cup, it remained in the possession of RSYC to this day.

If the trophy could talk, it would have a wonderful tale to tell. According to the “Three Burgees” – a history of the RSYC published in 2010 – the Club’s trophies and other possessions were deposited in the vaults of the Mercantile Bank of India during the WWII years. They were first deposited in September 1939, but three months later were retrieved “when it was realized that Singapore was at no imminent threat of attack.” However, they were hastily re-deposited in 1941 after the first Japanese attacks in late December 1941. The last RSYC meeting, an SGM, was held on 14 Dec 1941

(exactly one week after Pearl Harbour). Singapore fell in February 1942.

When Singapore was liberated in September 1945, the handful of RSYC members headed by Henry Worham, the last Honorary Secretary of RSYC before WWII, quickly set to task the re-opening of RSYC by organizing an EGM on 9 November 1945. At that meeting Worham proposed E.W. Slight to be commodore which the meeting unanimously agreed. The trophies were recovered and taken out of the bank vaults after the RSYC was re-opened officially on 13 January 1946.

At the first post-war AGM in 1947, Commodore Slight stood down in favour of Mr P.A.B. (later Sir Patrick) McKerron, then Colonial Secretary and OAG (officer administering the government) of Singapore, the highest ranking government official at that time.

By a special arrangement between the RSYC and Singapore Sailing Federation, the Chinta Challenge Cup is revived in December 2012 as a perpetual cup for competitive keelboat sailing in the Inter-Club Twilight Series at Marina Bay. RSYC is the oldest yacht club in Asia, having been founded in 1826 as the Singapore Yacht Club.

24 REPUBLIC OF SINGAPORE YACHT CLUB

Saturday 17 November 2012 started as a sunny morning, almost a perfect day for the 28 young participants in the RSYC Charity Cruise, a traditional annual event of our Club for many years. By 8.30am about a dozen RSYC members and other volunteers had arrived for the morning briefing on safety procedures and the program for the day.

Shortly thereafter came the youngsters and their six chaperones from the Canossaville Children’s Home and the Salvation Army’s Haven Children’s Home, all eagerly waiting for the start of a day of fun and games in their outing to popular Pulau Hantu. They

were warmly welcomed to the Club by our General Manager Mr Trachsel.

After donning their life jackets and grouped according to the boats manifest, the children were introduced to the skippers of the 12 boats. An important 13th boat, the Beluga, carried all the logistics, food and beverages, and games equipment. And off they went, arriving as a group at their destination by 10am.

The morning was spent playing several rounds of team-building games, and competing for prizes donated by the sponsors. There was plenty of laughter and excitement as the two groups

mingled and enjoyed themselves immensely, till it was time for lunch. The serving for lunch was generous: there was seafood noodles, chicken chops, fish, mashed potato, mixed vegetable, fruit platter and a cold dessert of ice-cream on a stick.

Then came the highlight of the day – the arrival of five jet-skis! The thrill of riding these speed-machines with their owners was palpable. Almost every child jumped at the opportunity, including the faint-hearted. But alas, the weather was rather unkind. Before long, menacing rain clouds had gathered at the picnic venue, and the excitement came to an abrupt end.

The rains came in torrents, and the organizers had to beat a hasty retreat by 2pm.

Upon arrival at the Club, almost everyone was soaking wet! But the children and the members and the staff took it in their stride. The important thing was that they all arrived safely back at the club that afternoon. After the children had changed and put on their dry clothes, they were given a warm cup of Milo and light snacks. The fun continued with the kids receiving their goodie bags and the prizes they had won at the games segment of the picnic.

At the end of the day, the children from the Canossaville Children’s Home presented their hosts with a song to express their gratitude. And so ended the 2012 Charity Cruise at 4pm.

Following are some verbatim expressions from the children’s “Reflection Log”:

• Thank you! We have fun today• Dear RSYC, Thank you for the fun! And the boat ride, jetski ride.• Nice lunch• 2 things I like: The jetskis. The game to rescue the person standing behind the white line.• It was so fun!! I really enjoy it. Thank you!! I really like the boat ride, jetskis, the game you all plan for us and the food that was cooked.• 2 things I like: The motor boat. The food• 2 things I like: I like to swim. I like the jetskis• 2 things I like: I like the powerboat. It was very fun because the rain keeps on slapping at us.• 2 things I like: It is very windy. Chatting with friends.• 2 things I like: Powerboat. Playing games & swimming

THANK YOU BOATERS, VOLUNTEERS & DONORSWe thank all the Members, volunteers and donors who contributed, in one way or another, to make the

2012 Charity Cruise possible for the enjoyment of the children from the two beneficiary homes.

On the morning of 1 December 2012, 80 members with family and guests headed off to Johor in two coaches, filled with chatter and excitement. It was a much awaited trip to visit the newly opened Legoland Malaysia!

We had initially planned for 40 to go in one coach, but the response was overwhelming numbers kept coming in, and in order not to disappoint and dampen the spirit, especially of the children during the holiday season, we booked a second coach! We are very glad that we were able to accommodate so many requests, and it was a fun-filled day for the families and friends. We also apologize to those whom we were not able to accommodate because the two coaches were full.

Legoland, of course, was the highlight of the day! We also visited a chocolate outlet - Cocoa Rich - to see the process of chocolate-making. The children were thrilled while the adults bought uniquely crafted and flavored chocolates to bring home.

SHOPPING!To meet requests for different preferences, one coach headed to Jusco Tebrau while the second coach to Johor Premium Outlets (JPO). It couldn’t have been a better timing for those who headed to JPO... It was their first anniversary celebrations! Pony rides, caricature, strolling jazz band, roving street magicians and balloon sculpture clowns... There was entertainment for everyone - both young and old!

The day-trip ended with a sumptuous 8-course Chinese dinner at Zhen Bao Seafood Restaurant.
