Venice to Valletta Aboard Sea Cloud

Dear Members and Friends of The Metropolitan Museum of Art,

The Adriatic coast, with its dramatic cliffs and azure waters, has inspired poets from Virgil to Ezra Pound. Sail in October aboard the elegant Sea Cloud, to discover historic towns that were once centers of the Greco-Roman, Byzantine, and Renaissance worlds.

We are delighted that Stephan Wolohojian, Curator in the Department of European Paintings, will be accompanying us.

Built in 1931 for heiress Marjorie Merriweather Post, the four-masted sailing yacht Sea Cloud has hosted royalty, served her country during World War II, and sailed the world. Experience the thrill of traveling aboard this legendary ship in an ambiance of relaxed elegance and the congenial company of members of the National Trust for Historic Preservation and the Yale Alumni Association.

An optional prelude in Venice and an optional postlude in Malta are offered. This exceptional voyage has proved so popular in years past that we are offering it again.

We hope you will join us on this memorable discovery of the Adriatic.

Sincerely, Nina McN. Diefenbach

Vice President for Institutional Advancement

RAVENNA, ITALYSunday, October 16

Ravenna, capital of the Western Roman Empire from 402 to 476 A.D., is home to some of the most stunning mosaics in the world. Today’s visits include the Mausoleum of Galla Placidia and Theodoric’s two great churches—San Vitale and Sant’Apollinaire Nuovo—with their extraordinary mosaic processions of virgins and martyrs following the Magi. Return to the ship in time for a late lunch and the first lecture of our journey. This evening attend the captain’s welcome reception and dinner.

DUBROVNIK, CROATIATuesday, October 18

After a morning lecture and lunch on board, arrive in the spectacular walled city of Dubrovnik. Discover the influence of the Venetian architects in the medieval city’s main artery, Placa. View ancient manuscripts at the Franciscan Library, as well as the paintings in the Dominican and Franciscan Monasteries and the Rector’s Palace. Return to Sea Cloud for tea and an onboard performance by a folkloric a cappella choir.

KOTOR, MONTENEGRO Wednesday, October 19

Montenegro, for centuries a nest of brigands where Lord Byron was once kidnapped, today is both peaceful and scenic. Spend the afternoon in Kotor, still girded by its original walls. The city’s monuments date back to the Middle Ages and Renaissance, and its Romanesque churches are perfect examples of that simple but majestic style. Alternatively, you may wish to join an excursion to Our Lady of the Rocks Church with its 17th-century frescoes, located on an island off the coast of Perast. Return to Sea Cloud for dinner as we sail out of the Gulf of Kotor.

BRINDISI, ITALYThursday, October 20

Step ashore in the port of Brindisi. Drive past ancient olive groves en route to Lecce, a Baroque city filled with exuberantly ornamented churches, palaces, and houses carved from the honey-colored local stone. Often used for period movies, Lecce resembles an opera set. See the restored 16th-century cathedral and adjoining archbishop’s palace, seminary, and Church of Santa Croce.

AT SEAFriday, October 21

Experience the thrill of sailing during a relaxed day at sea. As Sea Cloud cruises the southern Italian coast, watch as the crew practices the art of trimming the sails by hand, or perhaps settle into a comfortable deck chair with a favorite book.

SYRACUSE (SICILY), ITALYSaturday, October 22

This morning explore Syracuse, one of the most important cities in antiquity. Discover the ancient Greek and Roman theaters in the Archaeological Zone and see the cathedral in the Old Town, built upon the ruins of the Temple of Athena. We are then invited for a private visit to the Palazzo Beneventano del Bosco. Toast a memorable voyage at the Captain’s farewell dinner tonight.

ANCONA, ITALY Monday, October 17

From Ancona, you may choose to explore the medieval walled city of Urbino, nestled on a picturesque hillside, and visit the Ducal Palace, which houses the National Gallery of the Marche, one of the most important collections of Renaissance art in the world.

Grand Canal, Venice

Grand Canal, Venice
