Head of the Lakes United Way’s focus on education is about helping children enter school ready to learn, succeed in school, and graduate high school prepared for college, work, and life. If you have passion and commitment, consider being a Reader Tutor Mentor. You will be a guiding force in the life of a young person to achieve greater academic success! READER Volunteer as a Reader to assist pre-K through 3rd grade children with reading and literacy skills through weekly reading and literacy activities. TUTOR Volunteer as a Tutor to assist elementary and middle school students with their home work in subjects like math and reading. MENTOR Volunteer as a Mentor to lead academic activities on a weekly basis or provide career exploration activities to youth for a one-time event. HOW TO BECOME A VOLUNTEER Fill out a Reader, Tutor, Mentor application at www.volunteerduluth.org Your application will be screened and references will be checked. Based on your availability and preferences, you will be assigned a volunteer site. You’ll be invited to attend a mandatory Reader, Tutor, Mentor training. Your site will be a support system for you and provide an orientation to go over site-specific information. TRAINING OPPORTUNITIES Every volunteer will receive a training on best practices on working with youth. After your application has been submitted you will be asked what day and time works best, to attend an hour long training on working with youth. The training will be held at United Way, 424 West Superior Street, in either conference room A or B/C. VOLUNTEER SITESThe following list of the organizations have volunteer hours available. Each site is will provide unique volunteer opportunities and flexible hours. Volunteers can serve as little as an hour a week, with a minimum commitment of three months.
