How do you source your rugs?We attend High Point and Atlanta markets.

Some of our favorite sources are StarkCarpet, Nourison, ABC Carpet & Home,Dash & Albert and certain antique rugdealers. For custom rugs, Stark has beenextremely helpful in transferring our ideasand sketches to a finished product.

How and when do you determine thecolor of the rug?

There are no hard and fast rules to play byhere. Each rug chosen is selected accordingto the taste of the client, i.e., some clients willlet us push the envelope, where others opt fora more predictable look. We do like to mixthings up to make a space inviting and tocreate fluency. We respect the rules, but wetry and always be open to invention.

Do you have a favorite fiber or style?For the fiber, our favorite is always wool; as

for style, we keep our options open.

Have you ever used a rug consultant?Yes, if we are looking for a particular type

of antique rug with a definite color palette,or perhaps we’ve seen an unusual rug in apublication that we know is not a currentone, we look to a consultant to search for onein her/his travels.

What about the size of the rug in rela-tion to the room and furniture?

In a large room that will function for entertaining crowds, we go for drama in size. In acozy space, much thought is given to the scale of the rug to entice one to sit, enjoy, andfeel almost enveloped in the surroundings.

What markets do you attend?I regularly attend the Dallas Market and also

attend the bi-annual Business of Design BestPractices Network, where meetings travel allover the United States. While visiting, we visiteach Design Center to see the latestproducts available for our discriminatingclients. Lately I have been to Las Vegas,Denver, and New York City, with my nexttrip planned for February in Scottsdale.

Do you have any favorite sources? I am always on the lookout for

sustainably designed and manufacturedsources. This is still a bit of a challenge tofind U.S.-made sustainable sources. Welove working with Tufenkian rugs fortheir beautiful and unique designs.

We love natural fibers, such as wool andsilk, and are now seeing more silkalternatives to provide more pricecompetitive products. Bamboo silk is oneof the fibers we’ve been specifying lately.

Do you lean toward one style of design?

Our design aesthetic tends to gravitate toward a more modern and clean palette.Tufenkian offers many options in this arena.

Do you use the internet?Although the internet has opened up the world and really puts it at our fingertips, we

prefer seeing pieces in person, before making our purchases. Once we know the qualitylevel from a supplier or vendor, we feel more comfortable with using their online catalog.It is common for us to additionally order a sample to show our clients for their finalapproval.

What about custom?Often times, when the timing will allow, we do custom weave rugs to provide exactly

the size, color and fiber that meets the specific design for the particular space.

What markets do you attend?I do attend every Las Vegas Market, and

of course High Point once a year.I do not shop on the internet, as I want to

support my trusted resources. If I am onthe internet, I am looking at the websites ofmy favorite suppliers. I prefer tosee the rugs in person and thenrefer to the catalogs and photo filethat I take and file with detailednotes, while the markets are open.

How and when does color en-ter the design project?

I select the area rug after themain furniture pieces and colorscheme have been determined. Tome, it’s treated just like a piece ofart to enhance and further definethe space and the personalities ofthe owners.

What about custom rugs? Or “green” rugs?

I do buy custom rugs fromSurya, Jaipur and Creative Accents. These manufacturers all have rugs with a modernappeal that most of my clients are looking for. Creative Accents will make the rugs to yourcolor and size order in a fairly short lead time. I also use Surya quite a bit and have beenknown to use a local tradesman to “bind” more than one rug together to get the size Ineed quickly.

I don’t specifically look for a “green” area rug unless the client is requesting it. If I havea choice between two that are similar and one is green, I will buy it. However, I mustadmit, I am on a mission to find the perfect piece for most of my clients, and “green” isnot the first consideration.

Do you have a favorite style or fiber? I love New Zealand wool rugs for the durability and sheer variety for most of my

modern clients. I am also quite fond of cowskins that are stamped with other designs likezebra, etc., for a touch of whimsy and natural texture. However, like most designers,when I am searching for a perfect accent piece like a fine rug, I am open to all styles andfibers in the area rug, if they will make the space sing!Want to see more?
