2018 TOOHEYS NEWCASTLE RUGBY LEAGUE
ROUND 3
MATT'S MESSAGE ceo matt harris
After round 2 results we see the Maitland Pickers and the Kurri Kurri Bulldogs sitting one, two on the Tooheys Newcastle RL Business Plaza ladder. This undefeated start by the two coalfield teams is also matched by 2017 premiers Macquarie. While we are only two weeks into a long season the performances of the Pickers and Bulldogs should install plenty of optimism for both clubs and their supporters.
Last weekend?s action saw Kurri prove too clinical for their arch rivals Cessnock with the away team running out 28 to 12 winners. In Sunday?s South Newcastle v Maitland clash after a scoreless first half the Pickers clicked into gear in the second half running in 26 points to the Lions 6. The current competition leaders are shaping up as serious contenders with point scoring ability across the park and a significantly improved defensive system. At Cahill Oval Lakes United produced the upset of the round with a strong 14 point win over West Newcastle. In the BarTV match of the round Central Newcastle and Macquarie battled it out for 80 minutes with the visiting Scorpions sneaking away with a narrow 15 to 12 win.
In round 3 of the Business Plaza Cup front-runners Maitland host the winless Central Newcastle Butcher Boys. Current form would suggest that a trip to the new Maitland Sportsground will be an extremely difficult task but Central have a quality team that showed last round that they will be an imposing outfit on their day. Also on the Saturday South Newcastle travel to Peacock Field hoping to avoid an 0 and 3 start. A difficult task against what looks to be another strong Scorpions outfit.
The third Saturday game, and the BarTV match of the round, is Kurri Kurri v Lakes United at Kurri Sportsground. The Bulldogs have been the surprise package so far this season and with Lakes coming off a strong round 2 win we could be in for an extremely close tussle. This game can be viewed via our website (www.newcastlerugbyleague.com.au) or Facebook page (Tooheys Newcastle Rugby League). Sunday?s lone fixture pits West Newcastle against the Cessnock Goannas. The Rosellas would be smarting after their loss to Lakes while Cessnock will be desperate to secure their first points for 2018.
This week also signifies the first of our four Friday night double header rounds. South Newcastle and Cessnock will each host two u19 matches with 6.15pm and 7.30pm start times. With great weather predicted we can
expect some exciting games from the future stars of Newcastle RL.
A reminder to keep up-to-date with everything Newcastle Rugby League including match-day scores by following us on Facebook (Tooheys Newcastle Rugby League), Twitter (@Newcastle_RL) and via our new website (www.newcastlerugbyleague.com.au).

Don't Knock The Nocks
Our first home game of 2018 saw the Lions take on the Maitland Pickers at Townson Oval. Unfortunately, the weather wasn't kind to us meaning we had to postpone reserve grade and open grade.
The day started with a great 30-0 win to the LLT girls. The under 19's then went down to a strong Maitland outfit.
After a 0-0 half time score in the main game we took a 6-0 lead early in the second half. Unfortunately, the Pickers finished stronger and ran out winners 26-6.
This week our under 19s are part of a Friday night double header. They play Macquarie on Friday night at Townson Oval at 7.30pm (with Cessnock under 19's playing Wests under 19s at 6.15pm)
The rest of our teams play Macquarie at Lyall Peacock Oval on Saturday
SOUTH NEWCASTLE LIONS
KURRI KURRI BULLDOGSThe mighty Bulldogs travelled to Cessnock to take on the Goannas in the local derby, akin to a war at times the local rivalry runs deep. The St at ion Hot el LLT team got the day off to a flyer, coach Gilmore said at times the team looked out of sorts however they were able to convert when it mattered to come away with the two points. The Mit chell Physiot herapy under 19?s did not have the same success, after a couple of fantastic training sessions the preparation was thrown into chaos with late withdrawals leaving coach Heitmeyer to shuffle his side around.
Although decimated by injury, late withdrawals and the promotion of players to reserve grade, the St at ion Hot el Open Grade continued on where they left off last week. A dominant display by the forwards made the task easy for the experienced half back Mick (rick flair) Shaw to lead the side around the park. This in-turn gave his wingman Daniel (iceman) Doyle room to frolic on the edges causing chaos for the Cessnock defence.
The Firest orm Reserve Grade team bounced back to form with a hard fought victory, led by fullback Jarom Haines and the captain Shane Baldwin. The Bulldogs looked in control for the majority of the game even after having one player dismissed from the field for a suspected Liverpool kiss. Coach Leggett was happy with the improved commitment from his charges, as methodical as the coach is he will be working hard with his group to continue on their winning ways this weekend.
The much anticipated first grade clash started with the Firest orm Bulldogs posting to early tries to the Reid Alchin, the Bulldogs went into the break with a 16 nil lead. The key message for the second stanza was to continue on the same vein as the first half. However neither side could gain ascendancy for any long periods of time in the second half. The Bulldogs posted the first try early in the second half, from there the game descended into a grind with both sides fighting for control a few errors and penalties crept into the game. Cessnock crossed the stripe before a great individual try to Sam Wooden to close out the game. Round two presented an improved performance from the Bulldogs, round three look for a continued improvement.

MACQUARIE SCORPIONS
PATRON: MR COL BURNS:
Congratulations from everyone at the Scorpions to Nathan Cantor #103 First Grade games today
A mixed bag for the Scorpions last weekend against Central with the First grade and Reserve grade coning away with strong hard fought 15-13 and 22-6 wins, unfortunately the Open grade could not follow on from their excellent performance against Lakes the previous week and were defeated 26-6.
The Under 19s again showed what they could do late in the second half to only go down 18-16 but they must perform at that level for the entire game and they will wins games of footy. The Under 19s are away this weekend against South Newcastle and it is hoped they can come away with their first win. Player Auction points for the Under 19s against Central were 3 points Jack Jordan, 2 points Jason Edwards, 1 point Sam Abraham.
The Open grade also started poorly and unfortunately did not improve during the game with poor ball handling and mistakes proving costly and a better performance is expected this week at home. Player Auction points for Open grade last week were 3 points Josh Walker, 2 points Pat Sharkey and 1 point Zac Plummer.
The Reserve grade were again very strong with many standouts in an all round quality performance in wet conditions. Player Auction points went to 3 points Jayden Rosberg, 2 points Nick Worthington and 1 point Adam Swadling.
The First grade followed on from the reggies and recorded their 2nd win of the season against the fancied Butcher Boys. The Scorpions were behind 12-6 at the halftime break but kept Central scoreless in the second half due to some great defence and also a superb kicking game from Scott Briggs ensuring the game was played in the Central half. Player auction points went as follows 3 points Todd Hurrell, 2 points Jordan Noble and 1 point Scott Briggs.
Just a reminder to all our supporters that the very successful 300 club will be held again this year with tickets going on sale from this week from any committee member. As in 2017 proceeds will be going to Nova Women and Children.

Round 2 saw The Maitland Pickers Head to Townsen Oval to take on South Newcastle, and there was plenty of wet weather footy action.
The Ladies went down against a very strong Souths Outfit, while U19?s got the win in very tough conditions wich than saw Open grade and reserve grade called off. First grade kept their winning ways with a great second half, scoring 26 winning Points, That?s a total of 62 points to 6 in the first two rounds of the competition.
This week U 19?s will head back to Townsen Oval for the First Friday Night double header of the season as the take on Central Newcastle. We hope to see many Pickers Supporters there Cheering the boys on.
Saturday we return to Maitland Sports ground where the remaining 4 grades will be keen to get the win at home against Central, with Ladies League Tag Kicking off at 11:45, followed by Open Grade, Reserve grade & First grade at 3:30.

LAKES UNITED SEAGULLS
It was great to be back at Cahill oval for the 2018 season. While it was not one of our most successful days across the board with only one victory, you could not fault the effort across all 5 teams.
It would be fair to say that 1st grade went in as under dogs, we would not have it any other way. After the early grind, the boys got on top and never looked like losing as they came away with a 20-6 victory.
Now to Kurri, on May 6, 2000 at Kurri Kurri Sportsground the home crowd went crazy when two tries in the last six minutes through Rick Ryan and Leo Dynevor got Steve Crowes side their fourth win in a row to propel them to the top of the ladder. Seagull coach Rip Taylor admitted the crowd was a factor but was more concerned with the possible broken cheekbone suffered by his top second rower Paul Jeffries. Good Luck to all teams this weekend.
Thank you to all of our Sponsors, we appreciate your ongoing support
