Why MPT?

Global trend

– Canada:

• All PT schools have implemented the MPT program.

– US:

• All accredited PT programs are at the doctoral level(DPT).

– Australia:

• Most schools have implemented the MPT program, withsome schools concurrently running the MPT and BSc PTprograms.

Why MPT in Hong Kong?

Need to increase student intake.

– Increasing need of physiotherapy service (ageing

population, increased awareness of well-being and quality

of health).

– Shortage of physiotherapists across different sectors.

– A need to increase supply of physiotherapy labor force of

promising quality in a timely manner.

MPT Vs BSc?

Two-year program

– Allows an alternative pathway to enter the

physiotherapy profession (bachelor degree holders)

– Able to produce physiotherapy graduates in 2

years

Program Curriculum

• 6 semesters in 2 years (including 2 summer

semesters)

• Professional content and clinical education hours

(more than 1,000 hours) not less than the BSc

(Hons) PT program

Entrance Requirements

Have obtained credits in each of the following pre-requisite university undergraduate-level courses before admission: Human Physiology (3 credits or equivalent).

Human Anatomy (3 credits or equivalent)

Student intake: 48 maximum

Have BSc degree

Entrance Requirements

English Requirement

If applicants are not native speakers of English, and their

Bachelor's degree or equivalent qualifications were awarded by

institutions where the medium of instruction is not English,

applicants are expected to fulfill the following minimum English

language requirement for admission purpose.

o A Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) score of 80

for the Internet-based test or 550 for the paper-based test;

OR

o An overall Band Score of at least 6 in the International English

Language Testing

Professional Recognition

MPT graduates can apply for registration with the

Physiotherapists Board of Hong Kong.

Curriculum covers all essential subject areas required

for entry level physiotherapy education

Professional Recognition

Registration with Physiotherapists Board of Hong Kong

was approved in December 2015 under the Guidelines for

Handling Applications for Registration under section 12

(1)(a) of the Supplementary Medical Professions

Ordinance. The MPT graduates are fully eligible to apply

for registration and practice in Hong Kong.

Tuition Fee

• A total of $640,000 for 2 years (4 instalments:

$160,000 each)

• Students can apply for sponsorship from NGOs.

• Students with sponsorship will have to settle the

tuition fee by themselves first, and then reimburse

from the NGO.

Sponsorship scheme in previous cohorts

• 30 students from 1st cohort graduated in January 2014. 27 students

obtained sponsorships from 20 NGOs. 3 students decided to study on

self-financed basis.

• 29 students from 2nd cohort graduated in January 2016. 27 of them

obtained sponsorships from 19 NGOs. 2 students decided to study on

self-financed basis.

• 45 students from 3rd cohort graduated in January 2019. 42 of them

obtained sponsorships from 27 NGOs. 3 students decided to study on

self-financed basis.

• At present, there are 46 active students. 41 of them obtained

sponsorships from NGOs.

Note: Successful applicants who join Training Sponsorship Scheme funded by

SWD are not eligible to apply for Extended Non-means-tested Loan Scheme

(ENLS).
