Dear RunMinnesota Readers,At the last MDRA Board Meeting, about a month ago, I volunteered to write the opening letterto this issue of RunMinnesota. Seemed like a simple enough task. Maybe write something about theslowing of the 2012 racing season, the Polar Bears running group and what MDRA means to me.

But, then the real world hit MDRA in ways that can’t be fixed by simply going for a run. First, we lostformer MDRA President Jeff Winter to cancer. Jeff’s legacy encompasses MDRA, Twin Cities Marathon andhis signature race, the City of Lakes. Then we lost former board member Colin Farbotko to ALS.

It has been a rough month, and the MDRA family is grieving, while our hearts, thoughts and prayersare with Jeff’s and Colin’s families. I cannot do justice to what Jeff and Colin have meant to MDRA orhow fortunate I feel to have known them both. There is nothing I can write to fill the void they have left behind.

In a confluence of coincidence, the first time I met Colin and Jeff for the first time was at a City ofLakes around 2006. I can’t remember what my volunteer duties were that year, but it was importantenough that I had to meet with Jeff in advance (Jeff likes his ducks in rows and all stones turned). Andsomehow I had to coordinate what I was doing with Colin.

So, when I think of City of Lakes, I think of Colin and Jeff. In their own unique way, each was very nononsense, which is one of the most appealing things about the sport of running. A course. A stopwatch.People to race against. No frills. No excuses. Jeff was certainly no frills, and Colin personified no excuses.

The last week or so I have been thinking of both of them and how it fits into my own running. I got intorunning in high school in the late 80s in south Texas, because it wasn’t football. That was pretty much myoriginal reason for running, and then I happily found out I was good at it.

Back then, cross country was still a rebel sport outside of the mainstream. We busted our butts inanonymity for a weird sport no one cared about, and we liked it that way. And actually there were peoplewho cared: other runners.

When I look back to what running and racing was back then, I think of Jeff. Jeff wasn’t selling an expe-rience in his races. He was selling you a challenging course, with accurate results and a competitive field. That’s the simplicity that welcomed me to the sport of running in high school. No frills.

And then there is Colin. I ran with him on the MDRA race team in 2008. One of his arms was alreadynotable for its atrophy. But, Colin never complained about it. He never expressed worry about it (he was-n’t sure if the atrophy would progress into ALS at the time). He just ran. And when he could no longerrun, he stayed true to who he was, with a trademark biting wit and creative, warm spirit that never wa-vered. No excuses.

As we move forward as an organization, we will remember what Jeff and Colin brought to the lives ofthose that knew them and our running community as a whole. We recognize our own health and don’ttake for granted the next run is as far away as where we last left our running shoes.

And we will remember the simplicity of running. And we will continue to build a welcoming commu-nity of runners who take the sport seriously but also use the sport to make and build friendships.

If MDRA as a whole, including all its members, can foster that vision, then we will honor the legacy ofJeff and Colin more than any one runner can. We run for so many reasons, and community is one of them. Our community is strong because of Jeff and Colin, and will be stronger as we remember them.

Dear RunMinnesota,When Jeff Winter passed away last Saturday, the running com-munity lost a man whose vision, skill and tireless labor created the foundationupon which the Minnesota Distance Running Association has grown. I am surethat you probably have received countless letters and comments about Jeff’sterrific talent for organization and how important his work was to today’s or-ganization. While he is being remembered as a leader in the running commu-nity, I hope he will also be remembered for his character.

I ran with Jeff nearly every day and for thousands of miles back in the 1970s.In 1975, Jeff was the race director for the Land-o-Lakes Marathon that was

run on a course around Bald Eagle Lake in the first week of October. The racestarted in the middle of the day, because cool temperatures were anticipated. It was about 90 degrees. Jeff warned everyone about the heat and the need totake water. He told us all to be careful out there.

I was 24, in excellent condition and planned to run a fast race. As things de-veloped, I went out with the leaders in the race. We had excellent splitsthrough more than half of the race. Unfortunately, I was not keeping my fluidsdown. By mile 17, Jeff, who was out on the course watching out for partici-pants, realized that I was running fast, but knew looked awful. He told me Iwas in trouble. “Your eyes are funny.”

He actually tried to pull me off the course. I slipped out of his grip and con-tinued. At mile 20, Jeff was positioned a short way down the road. I decided todrop before I got sick. I spent the next three days in the hospital on IVs withheat exhaustion.

Jeff came to the hospital every day and checked in to see if I was getting bet-ter. After confirming that I was getting better, he gave me my daily scolding.

The MDRA did not thrive simply because Jeff was a terrific organizationalman. MDRA thrived because Jeff cared deeply about his friends, the runners.

Cost is $5.00 for the entire series. This is above and beyond the race entry fees, and is a one-time fee paid to

the MDRA. GP scoring will include only GP registrants who are registered finishers of a GP race. No retroactive registration; runners registering after Irish Run Saint Paul, for example, will not be counted in Irish Run Saint GP results even if they ran it.

2. Entrants must be MDRA members. 3. Runners score according to their finish place out of all GP registered finishers each race. The first GP runner

in each race will score 1,000 points. All others will score based upon the percentile in which the runners finish such that the middle finisher will always score 500 points. Points are awarded without regard to age or sex. In scoring races we use USATF rules (thus gun time is used rather than chip time)

4. There are 13 GP races. A runner may compete in as few or as many of the races as they choose; however, results from only 10 races will count. If a runner runs more than 10 races, only their 10 highest scores will count. Anyone running in 10 or fewer races will have all of their scores included.

5. Scores are tallied within age division for each sex. Runners do not change age divisions during the year. A ivision is set according to his division on the day of his first GP score. For example, a runner

turning 50 on April 1 would be scored all year in the 45-49 bracket if she runs Irish Run Saint Paul as a GP registrant, but would score all year in the 50-54 bracket if her first GP score is after April 1.

6. Age groups for both male and females are 0-34, 35-39, 40-44, 45-49, 50-54, 55-59, 60-64, 65-69, 70-74, 75-79, 80-84, 85+. In order for an age group to exist, it must have at least two participants, and each participant must complete 2 races. In addition, in order for an individual to win an age group they must run in at least 2 races.

7. Grand Prix standing information will be included in RunMinnesota, on the MDRA website @ runmdra.org, and e-mailed to all participants.

8. There will be awards for each age group winner, which will be presented at the MDRA annual party held in January 2014. Also, MDRA will present a special award to anyone who participates in all 13 races. In addition, anyone participating in at least 10 of the races will get an nice MDRA technical shirt

9. The dates listed above are the probable dates, but should be reconfirmed as race day approaches. Questions? Jeff Winter, an icon of Min-nesota running for 40 plusyears, passed away peacefullyat home, October 13. Jeff hadmelanoma removed from hisarm earlier in the spring that atthe time seemed rather in-nocuous. He kept a busyschedule throughout the sum-mer as he always did.

R E M E M B R A N C E S

JEFF WINTER, 1943-2012BY HEIDI MILER

Jeff being a creature ofhabit, he stuck with his 6:00a.m. workouts at Lifetime Fit-ness on Cedar Lake Road, earlymorning “office” sessions atDunn Bros. coffee shop, ninehole golf outings, beloved mo-torcycle trips, Twins gamecheck ins, People for Parks(president of the board) busi-ness and preparing for the up-coming thirty-first edition ofthe MDRA City of Lakes 25K.

Saturday, August 18, Jeffwas brought to the ER afterbeing slow to respond thatmorning. He was diagnosedwith three metastaticmelanoma tumors in the frontallobes of his brain stemmingfrom the spread of themelanoma. At that point on, Jeffwas in a battle for his life. Henever left the hospital or recov-ery facility again except to gohome for hospice care.

Jeff leaves a legacy to run-ners throughout the state inmany aspects. He was awardedwith a lifetime achievementaward at MDRA’s Fiftieth An-niversary party two years ago.Jeff was President of MDRA dur-ing four critical years of growthfrom 1977 to 1980 when mem-

bership skyrocketed from 300 to3,000 members. This proved to bean important period of history asMDRA was capturing the new run-ners from the maturation of therunning boom.

Thanks to Jeff’s organizationalskills the train didn’t run off thetracks. With his leadership, the in-creased work load did not phaseor panic the board, even thoughmost of the work was done by thevolunteer board and officers, in-cluding printing a bi-monthlynewsletter, putting on races andhandling the huge increase inmembership.

One of Jeff’s signature eventshe founded and directed is theMDRA City of Lakes 25K. Justcompleting its thirty-first year, this race was developed from aWinter directed and founded racecalled the City of Lakes Marathon(from 1972 to 1974, this race wasat Bald Eagle Lake and named theLand of Lakes Marathon).

1975 brought a new locationfor the MDRA sponsored Land ofLakes Marathon to Minneapolison Jeff’s beloved lakes course. This event was now co-producedby MDRA and the MinneapolisPark and Recreation Board. TheLand of Lakes sponsorship was

lost, and in 1977, the race was re-named the City of Lakes Marathonuntil the last running in 1981.

This marathon was the precur-sor to the MDRA City of Lakes 25Kwhich began in 1982 and is still runtoday. Jeff wrote the history of theLand of Lakes Marathon retrospec-tive that ran in the September/Oc-tober 2003 issue of RunMinnesotaand can be found at www.city-oflakes25k.com.

As long time race director, Jeffwas an advocate for the runner. He made race directing an art andinstilled a higher degree of pro-fessionalism, including creatingpossibly the first timing companyin the state: Start to Finish RaceManagement.

Jeff was a perfectionist, some-times to my great chagrin! I spentcountless hours out on the RonDaws 25K course with him in nastyMarch weather as we had to assessthe yearly construction changesand new course possibilities. Hewas relentless in making it a truechallenge just as it was back in theday when Daws, Hoag, Jeff and oth-ers traversed the course for theirBoston Marathon training.

Jeff would get out the measur-ing wheel and go over and overcertain sections until he was con-fident his beloved 25K distancewas as close to true as he couldmake it. I know many a runnerwill miss his pre-race meeting(lecture) in the church gym thatgave the history of the race, thehistory of the race’s name sakeand also rather stern instructionson being safe out there alongwith the “updated” course wewere going with in any given year.

Jeff was ahead of his time insome respects. He was among

the first race directors to offershirts to finishers in the 1974Land of Lakes Marathon. Lateron in 1979, he was lamentingthe lack of creativity of race di-rectors as the t-shirt had be-come the ubiquitous finishermemento. Reading through the1979 fall edition of the Min-nesota Distance Runner maga-zine (forerunner to Run-Minnesota), Jeff was advocatingfor more low key races with a noshirt, lower fee option and usinga fresh approach to producingraces instead of the “currentmonkey-see-monkey-do ap-proach” of finisher t-shirts. Pos-sibly where the long standingtradition of the City of Lakes 25Kfinisher mug was born!

Jeff Winter was one of akind, his legacy of five decadesof service and volunteerism torunners will never be forgotten.I, personally, will always re-member his unfailing dedica-tion to the sport of running andto MDRA. My last conversationwith Jeff was the week hepassed. I was at his bedside, and he could barely manage awhisper. He was interested inhearing about the 2012 runningof the City of Lakes 25K that oc-curred a few weeks earlier. Helooked pleased to hear we hadincreased our numbers again, and the race had some reallyfast times, including a newwomen’s course record. In avery soft voice, Jeff whispered,“Good show.” His legacy leavesus with many examples of howto put on a “good show.” I hopewe at MDRA can make himproud carrying on his traditionof excellence.

This one of a kind obituary for Colin Farbotko was

shared by Colin’s widow, Marney Olson. Colin was instru-

mental in bringing MDRA into the digital age. It was with

some kicking and screaming, but he wasn’t about to take no

for an answer. He was the driving force behind a larger web

presence and designed many of the earlier webpages with

which MDRA was experimenting. There was rarely a meet-

ing Colin didn’t draw up a new logo or singlet design for the

board to consider. He was super creative and will always be

remembered for his sense of style, sense of humor and love

of running.

Colin Yurek Farbotko, 34, suc-cumbed to ALS October 15,2012, after six years of valiantlyfighting the debilitating effectsof this vile disease.

Colin was born August 13,1978, to George and Janet Far-botko. Surprisingly, to anyonewho knew him later in life,Colin was a mild mannered andwell behaved child, especiallyin contrast to his rebelliousyounger sister, Anna. His form-ative years instilled in him adrive for creativity and out-of-the box thinking.

Upon graduation from Hon-onegah High School in Roscoe,Illinois, Colin entered Luther Col-lege in Decorah, Iowa, for fouryears of typical adolescent maledebauchery. During college, heand his father sculpted giantworks of snow art, placing incompetitions as far away asSwitzerland. Graphic artistry, drinking, naked soccer and other(thankfully clothed) sports occu-pied much of his time.

It was at Luther where Colinmet great friends Kevin Franz,Pete Schoenebaum and manyother good Luther friends. He

also met a young lady, MarneyOlson, who would someday be-come his wife. Colin graduatedwith degrees in Art and Commu-nications and moved to Min-neapolis, Minnesota, to pretendto be a grownup.

Colin provided creativegraphic, web and video designwork for Target and Inscape Pub-lishing and also did freelancework. He was an unapologeticMac snob. He spent much of hisbachelorhood biking and runningaround Minneapolis lakes andparks and entering local races. He participated in and completedthe Wisconsin Ironman Triathlon.During the Lifetime FitnessTriathlon in 2004, he re-met Mar-ney when she recognized andcheered for him during the race. They began dating immediatelyand were married April 1, 2006(no joke).

Colin loved Marney and hisfamily and friends, good local craftbeer (especially Surly), the FourFirkins, whiskey and gin, everykind of seafood and edible deli-cacy such as caviar, fois gras andtongue. Colin also enjoyed grillingon his back deck with friends, run-ning, biking, skiing, double enten-dres, the Simpsons, The Jayhawksand other music, the Internet andbeing creative. He disliked baddrivers, people who talk in movietheaters and ALS.

In lieu of flowers, memorialsare preferred to The ALS Associa-tion MN/ND/SD Chapter, 333North Washington Avenue, Suite105, Minneapolis, Minnesota55401.

PRESIDENT POSITION (one candidate running for one open position)

Michael Iserman1. I have been running and participating in organized road races for wellover ten years. Each year, I run 10-15 races at distances ranging from 10Kup to full marathons. To date I have completed 36 marathons including:Grandma’s Marathon (11), Twin Cities Marathon (10), MinneapolisMarathon, Big Sur International Marathon, Chicago Marathon, Las VegasMarathon, Denver Marathon, Disney World Marathon, and many others.

2. I have been a member of the MDRA since 2002. I have served two yearsas an at-large member of the MDRA Board and I am currently completing asecond one-year term as the President of the Board. I have 20 years of ex-perience working in fitness and personal training. Currently, I am the Direc-tor of Personal Training for the National Exercise Trainers Association(NETA) – overseeing NETA’s national Personal Training certification, relatedcontinued education course development, and presenting nation-wide certi-fication workshops. Previously, I spent over 8 years as the Director of Per-sonal Training for the YMCA’s of Greater Twin Cities. In that role, I providedoversight and support to the 22 local branches of the YMCA with regard topersonal training and fitness programming. I have also participated as aSubject Matter Expert (SME) on NETA’s Personal Training Role DelineationCommittee and have served as the Chair of NETA’s Board of Certification. Inaddition, I have also been a SME for the American Council on Exercise examdevelopment team and had served a two-year term on ACE’s Fitness Indus-try Advisory Panel. I hold professional certifications from the American Col-lege of Sports Medicine, the National Strength & Conditioning Association, the National Academy of Sports Medicine, and the American Council on Ex-ercise. I am a graduate of the University of Minnesota with a Bachelor ofScience degree in Kinesiology and currently in pursuit of a Master of Educa-tion degree in Applied Kinesiology.

3. As President, I would like to continue engaging the Board and MDRAmembers to become more actively involved in both the growth and im-pact of MDRA within the local running community. Nearly two years ago, Ichallenged to the MDRA Board of Directors to reverse the trend of declin-ing membership and to increase MDRA membership to at least 2,500. Iam pleased to report that we have achieved that goal with an overallgrowth of nearly 300 members since the end of 2010! Moving forward, Iwill strive to lead continued growth in MDRA membership; to increaseparticipation in MDRA race events and programs; and to educate the run-ning community regarding the mission and initiatives of MDRA.

VICE PRESIDENT POSITION (one candidate running for one open position)

Norm Champ1. I ran since high school, cross country and track. After that more offthan on until the Marathon bug bit in’ 86. Post Grandma’s the joys of ac-tively running and competing were a major part of who I was for 20 years.I found a great camaraderie with runners, in addition to the great physi-cal and mental cleansing that exertion brings. If you’re reading this youknow what I’m talking about. Although running can be a huge part ofyour life, most runners need to realize at some level, there is life afterrunning. Seeing others run down the parkway, or going to WATCH a race, gradually becomes less and less painful and more and more fun. I joinedthe Board in 2004, serving as Vice President the past two terms.

2. I am committed to the sport and the mission of MDRA. Perhaps my bestqualification is I show up. I (again) urge MDRA members to give back to theorganization. Volunteer at a race! It is really fun and you get to see the otherside of the events you participate in. MDRA can always use help putting outwater or treats to support our running programs. As a volunteer driven or-

We have worked hard to add members, now we need to get more members involved beyond sending in theiryearly dues and waiting for the race calendar.

TREASURER POSITION (one candidate running for one open position)

Josh Jacobson1. My running career started more by accident than anything else. As afreshman in high school I was more of a husky kid and was out for Trackand Field as a thrower (Shot Put and Discus). One of the coaches stoodup as we were pulling into the meet and asked if anyone wanted to runan 800 on the 4x800. And as the saying goes, “The rest is history.” Sincethat first exposure to running in high school, I ran competitively in highschool and then used running as a way to cross-train while I swam com-petitively in college. Since college I have been running to both keep inshape and to challenge myself with some races (10k to Marathon), tryingto better my times each race.

2. First I have had a passion for fitness and running since high school. Myundergraduate degree was in Exercise Science from St. Olaf College. Thisled me into the fitness industry as a Personal Trainer for 7 years before Ibegan the next phase of my professional career. I have also received anMBA from Hamline University and currently work in Corporate Financewith experience in both for-profit and non-profit finance.

3. First and foremost, as the role of Treasurer, I would like to continuewith the predecessors’ work, keeping the MDRA a financially strong andrelevant non-profit organization. Secondly, I would like to continue togrow MDRA’s influence in Minnesota and the running community as thego-to organization for runners statewide. Runners as a whole, regardlessof ability or experience, have a thirst for knowledge to improve theirhealth, fitness level, and performance and are looking for a group or or-ganization where they will find camaraderie in these goals. I would liketo help the MDRA grow into what these runners are looking for.

BOARD MEMBER ELECTIONS(eight candidates running for six open positions)

Kate Bomsta1. I started running long distance on a dare. One week before the 2010Minneapolis Half Marathon, my friend didn’t think it would be wise forme to run as I had only ran a couple of 5/10k’s. For research I turned toFacebook and asked what I needed to do in preparation. Taper was every-one’s response and taper I did not.

That hot June morning I suited up in my cotton tank, cotton socks andmy old, ill-fitted, grass-stained, lawn mowing shoes. Our carbo-loadingparty the night before was a success, plus my friend gave me somethingcalled a GU right before the race. I was set.

My original goal was to finish, and I did, but I also found a hobby anda community that led me to MDRA. You see, I am also a mother of 2, I

work full-time outside the home, and am married to a man who workslong hours and collects graduate degrees as his hobby. I was in desper-ate need of an outlet that fit my family’s schedule and kept me connectedto something other than work and family.

I’m not the fastest and obviously not always the wisest runner, but I’velearned it’s something I enjoy and that’s all that really matters. In somany ways, running has positively impacted every part of my life. Notonly do I have a new hobby I have a new obsession.

2. Yes, I have run a few marathons, a couple of half marathons that haveturned into 10-milers and even some trail races. I have also served on acouple of boards with success. Professionally I manage projects by lever-aging my strengths and building partnerships. I accomplish this by listen-ing, observing and assessing the needs of the business and ouremployees. In my current role, my focus is to build a strategy to deliver acompetitive product that’s sustainable and sets the stage for profitablegrowth. I am also a former Marine so I can be pretty bossy, but I can followand give directions as well. Bottom line, I think what you need to know isthat I am passionate about the MDRA community and I am a hard worker.

3. My goal is to keep MDRA relevant and build upon our strengths. Weare the largest and oldest running organization in Minnesota! We are nota fad; we are a community of runners and friends. In all honesty, I don’tfeel it’s fair to lay out a specific plan without learning more about our or-ganization and the direction we are headed. My focus, however, wouldbe on advocacy and promotions.

Darrell Christensen1. I began running in about 1998, after retirement, and ran my firstmarathon in 2000 after running the inaugural TC 10 mile in 1999. My sec-ond marathon, in 2003, qualified me for Boston and really got me intothe running scene. 2012 has been a series of injuries, but hope to returnto full race schedule in 2013.

2. I have created many friends and new runners through running clubsand volunteering at races, expos and general activities.

3. The race committee is interesting because I am involved, whenhealthy, in running nearly all of the events. I would be interested in at-tending more secondary races as a representative of MDRA to help pro-mote the organization to those that continue to be unfamiliar with us.Perhaps in lesser of a role than we get involved with now at the largerexpos. I think that often some of these smaller venues may have runnersthat are not into the big events yet and they may be somewhat easier toenroll. Each board member could choose a secondary race or 2 to recruitnew members.

Jim Delaplain1. Using the term “running” loosely, I started running in 2005 at age 46.It was my wife’s fault. She was a runner and had been asking me foryears to start. I had stopped smoking and decided to be healthier. Sincethen I have run 13 marathons (with a P.R. last year of 3:58, 3 minutesfaster than Paul Ryan) and 8 half marathons. This includes Twin Cities(2x), Chicago, St. George Utah (2x), and Grandma’s (8x). I have beentraining with the MDRA Spring and Fall Marathon Training Programs since2007, and was a Team Leader with the MDRA FMTP this last fall. I justcompleted certification as a running coach through the Road RunnersClub of America.

2. I have been serving on the Board for the past year, and am on the Pro-grams Committee. I serve on one other Board also, so I have some famil-iarity with the Rules of Order and procedures under which the Boardoperates. I am an attorney in private practice for the past 15 years

3. I have been on the Programs committee for the past year and am inter-ested in continuing to serve on that committee, overseeing transitionsoccurring in the MDRA Marathon Training Programs, with the hope ofkeeping those programs vital and relevant to the running community.

David Hong1. I started running Cross Country in Junior year of high school and havebeen an avid runner ever since. In May 2011 I successfully completed myfirst marathon in Eau Claire, WI. In spring 2012 I set a goal to qualify forBoston, and I’m happy to recently have qualified during this fall’s TwinCities Marathon! (I’ll be running Boston in 2014.) I run regularly with theCalhoun Beach Running Club as well as compete in the USATF team cir-cuit on the Foley & Mansfield Racing Team.

2. I have led numerous company-wide projects in my career as an Engi-neer at St Jude Medical, and I enjoy organizing and leading new cross-functional initiatives. These skills will allow me to successfully contributeto the board through leadership of new or existing programs. I also hadthe honor of captaining the St Jude Medical Twin Cities Marathon corpo-rate team, through which I experienced the challenges and rewards thatcome with organizing running events and promoting running within alarger community.

3. I would like to participate in race organization or promotion activities. Iam open to helping out wherever needed, but would most enjoy the op-portunity to expand MDRA’s race offerings or to improve the promotion ofthe organization to young adults.

Mary Johnson1. I’ve been running all my adult years. 5K and 10K were my favoriteraces. When I was approaching 50, my son persuaded me to tackle thelonger distance. I began training for and running half marathons andmarathons. Today my most enjoyable distance is the half-marathon andmy goal is to keep moving.

2. My qualifications for the MDRA board are simply my love of runningand my belief in this organization.

3. For the past three years on the board I have been involved in promo-tions. That is where I would like to continue. MDRA is an organization thatwelcomes all ages, all paces. Anyone who wants to run a 5K to a marathoncan train with MDRA and reach the finish line. I’ve been successful runningwith MDRA, have made many great friends and have had a lot of fun. wantto invite others to join MDRA and have a similar experience.

Heather Kick-Abrahamson1. I ran in track and cross-country in junior high and high school in NewPrague, MN and at St. Cloud State. I have completed 26 marathons and25 ultras-including 8 races over 100 miles. I have also done 10 tris (Sprintto Half-Iron Distance). I also have coached runners of various ages andlevels from beginners to runners training for ultras.

2. I have been a runner for over 20 years. I have organized and coachedbeginning to intermediate running programs for MDRA the past two

years. I would like to continue work with new coaches to expand our pro-grams in other areas of the metro.

3. I would love to help with program committees, as well as continuecoach classes.

Michael Nawrocki1. My background is varied, in a getting slower and just running for funsort of way. I have been running since middle school and ran competi-tively in high school and college. Then I raced recreationally. Now I jog....sometimes. But some things that has been a constant: I love running, being around runners, and talking about running. So even though mycompetitive running days are well behind me, I still love this sport, theMinnesota running scene, and being a part of MDRA.

2.I have served on the board for two terms. During that time I havestarted a new Thursday night running program that is only one year old.I have coached several marathon training classes. Also, with the help ofother MDRA coaches and board members I helped build our Polar Bearruns into a signature MDRA program. Lastly, through coaching and over25 years of running (15+ in the Twin Cities), I have gotten to know somany different types of runners. We all come to the sport for differentreasons and with different expectations, and the more the board can rec-ognize the diversity of our organization’s members, the better.

3. I want to continue to build the Thursday night runs and am consideringmaking these runs track workouts (with some hill workouts) for all comers. In 2012 I had ran the group with Ryan Albu, who was great to work with, soI am always looking for members to partner with for our programs. Anotherprogram I would like to explore is having a marathon training class forBoston qualifiers and anyone else running an early spring marathon.

Eve Stein1. I started running in High School and did my first citizen 5k in 1985, aHalloween Run in Madison. My running continued with 5k, 5 mile, and10k races until the early 1990’s when I ran my first half marathon. I rantwo full marathons in the late 1990’s. When I moved to Duluth, I startedtrail running and got off of roads. I now run many trail halves, typically 4each fall. My involvement in the running community also involves volun-teering, taking pictures, writing articles and a blog, race creating and di-recting, timing, and officiating at races. I take all the pictures for our localtrail series up here in the spring and the fall, help some at Grandma’smarathon events , write articles for Silent Sports Magazine and officiatethe MN state cross country races.

I coached running and nordic skiing with Northwest Club Run for fiveyears and coordinated the nordic program also. Recently I created a Zilchto 5k running group, Trails 101, and most recently Xtraining 101 in Duluth. The running experience I am most proud of is when I pushed my dad up amountain in a wheel chair during a half marathon at altitude in Arizonalast year!

2. I have so many special talents and experiences to contribute to theboard! My background in race directing, participation, timing, and moreare all things I am able to contribute to the already very talented andknowledgeable board! I would also like to get a couple of MDRA seriesraces in Duluth along with more members up here.

3. I would like to work on the race committee, help at an expo or two, andany other opportunities that I can get to!

N U T R I T I O N

I like to run, and I like to eat. The two seem to compliment each other. The moreI run the more calories I need to take in. Both my wife and I are avid runners, and we spend a good portion of our disposable income on running relateditems, so we try to limit our spending on food while still eating healthy. Un-fortunately, eating healthy is not cheap. According to a 2007 Universityof Washington study, the average cost of 1,000 calories of “healthy”food was $18.76, while 1,000 calories of “junk” food was $1.76.

When I run 50 miles in a week, in order to maintain my weight at 155 lbs, Ineed to consume about 22,000 calories. According to the University of Wash-ington study, if I ate “healthy” foods, my weekly grocery bill would be about$418.00, while I could sustain myself on “junk” food for about $39.00 a week.

How does a runner get the calories they need while striking a balance betweencalorie dense “junk” food and nutrient dense “healthy” food? There are several an-swers for the budget conscious runner.

My wife and I eat a lot of whole grain cereal and drink a lot of milk. An eightounce glass of two percent milk contains 130 calories and contains protein, carbohy-drates and fat that help maintain caloric needs at a minimal cost. At around $3.00for a gallon of milk, the cost per 1,000 calories is a paltry $1.44, which is evencheaper than “junk” food calories. Whole grain cereal, at around $3.00 per box (orless when buying store brands), costs only $1.75 per 1,000 calories.

Another way I supplement my caloric intake while eating healthy is with smooth-ies using Greek yogurt. Then, I can get nutrient dense foods like blueberries, ba-nanas and spinach, into a low fat but energy dense smoothie. A quart of ChobaniGreek yogurt is a little pricey at around $6.00, but with 23 grams of protein per serv-ing, it costs $9.33 per 1,000 calories, which is half the average of other “healthy”foods.

I also buy a lot of frozen fruits and vegetables. Often, frozen fruits and veggiesare flash-frozen right out of the field. They contain as much or more vitamins andminerals as their fresh counterparts. Buying them frozen means they last longer andare often less expensive than buying fresh. I also keep food costs low by buyingdried legumes and bags of rice. When I make chili, I can get ample protein and car-bohydrates while still staying within budget.

Eating healthy and eating on a budget need not be mutually exclusive. A well bal-anced diet can include both energy dense foods, like peanut butter and milk, andnutrient dense foods like whole fruits and vegetables. The key is to be mindful whengrocery shopping, look for sales and eat foods you enjoy.

Most Minnesotans like to run in cool temperatures. As the old saying goes, “Becareful what you wish for.” Runners who lined up for the thirty-first Twin CitiesMarathon (TCM) Sunday, October 7, were greeted to a 28 degree thermometerreading. It was the third coolest temperature at the start in the history of therace. And, perhaps just a little bit too cool for some of the elite runners whotraveled to the event from places quite a bit further south.

20 1 2Twin Cities MarathonRace Recap

MarathonIn the men’s open division, Christo-pher Kipyego, age 38, of Kenyawon the marathon with a 2:14:53.Kipyego, the 2010 Grandma’sMarathon winner, reportedly de-scribed the marathon pace of thelead pack as very slow into the first10 miles due to the cool tempera-tures. The Kenyan pulled away fromthe pack at mile 21 and sustained alead to the remainder of the race.

Chasing Kipyego to the finishwere Berhanu Girma, 25, ofEthiopia who took second placewith a 2:15:04 and Sean Quigley,27, of Boulder, Colorado, at thirdwith a 2:15:06. Girma is the 2012Grandma’s Marathon winner andQuigley finished in sixteenth placeat the 2012 Olympic marathon tri-als in January.

Taking the lead at mile 23,American Jeannette Faber, 30, ofPortland, Oregon, won thewomen’s open division with a2:32:37, a personal record (PR)and more than four minutes fasterthan her time at the 2012 Olympicmarathon trials where she finished

in twenty-first place. TCM wasFaber’s thirteenth marathon andthirteenth consecutive PR.

Hirut Guangul, 20, of Ethiopiafinished in second place with a2:34:02, and Melissa Johnson-White, 31, of Lake Orion, Michigan, came in third with a 2:34:02.*Johnson-White earned a victory inthe Twin Cities earlier this fallwhen she took first place at theCity of Lakes 25K with a 1:28:27.

In the USA Masters MarathonChampionships for runners overage 40, Ulrich Steidl, 40, of Seat-tle, Washington, won the men’stitle in 2:20:59. Nuta Olaru, 42, ofLongmont, Colorado, won thewomen’s masters in 2:36:57.

Decorated wheeler Saul Men-doza, 45, of Wimberley, Texas, wonhis fourth USA Master’s Title with a1:47:26. It was also Mendoza’sninth victory in the Twin Cities, mak-ing him the most winning athlete atTCM. For females, the win went toTracy Tabaka, 31, of Rogers, Min-nesota, at 2:58:59. It was Tabaka’ssecond consecutive win at TCM.

The cooler temperatures seemed

to agree with many of the runners. The average finish for marathonerswas 4:16:41, quite a bit faster than2007 when the starting temperaturewas a much warmer 62 degrees.During that recent “hot” year, theaverage finishing time was 4:47:54.In addition, there were 9,041 run-ners who finished the marathon thisyear, which is the highest number inthe event’s history.

10 MilerThe USA 10 Mile Championships fea-tured an equalizer option for the sec-ond time, this year giving the womena 6:31 minute head start over themen. The equalizer was added in2011 to add some excitement be-tween the men and women runnersas they approach the end of therace. The finish turned out to mirrorlast year’s race with both the menand women defending championsrepeating their victories. Mo Trafeh,27, of Duarte, California, finishedwith a 46:56, catching Janet Baw-com, 34, of Rome, Georgia, in thelast mile. Bawcom’s time was 53:43.

In the men’s race, Ben True, 26,of Portland, Maine, repeated as

the men’s second place finisherwith a 47:19. Jacob Riley, 23, ofRochester Hills, Michigan, wasthird in 47:22.

For the women, Olympian KaraGoucher, 34, a Duluth native andcurrently Portland, Oregon, resi-dent, came in second at 53:56. Al-isha Williams, 30, of ColoradoSprings, Colorado, took third at54:08. Goucher holds the TC 10Mile course record of 53:16, whichshe set in 2008.

There were 7,752 finishers forthe 10 mile event.

2013Looking ahead to 2013, there is onequestion that has drawn a lot of in-terest from local runners. Wherewill the marathon and 10 mile startnext year given the plans for thenew Vikings stadium? Some localnews reports indicate that prelimi-nary plans show construction willbegin in the fourth quarter of 2013,which brings the timeline right upto the October 6, 2013, TCM date.

According to a TCM spokesper-son, in 2013, it is likely that theHHH Metrodome will be used forthe Sunday start of the races withany change to occur in 2014. How-ever, it is always a good idea tovisit the TCM website for the latestinformation about the course.

*Finishing times are calculated to thetenth of a second and rounded up to thenearest full second in road races. Guangulcrossed the finish ahead of Johnson-White, albeit by a slim margin.

Long distance running is not a lonely activity whenyour training partners include 120 runners and nine team leaders in theMDRA Fall Marathon Training Program. Starting at the end of June, andcoached by Denny Jordan, Sheila Becker and Gloria Jansen, the group meton Tuesday evenings and Saturday mornings for 16 weeks. As if hill work-outs, half mile repeats and long runs weren’t grueling enough, training inheat and humidity, windy and cold weather, plus a Saturday morningthunderstorm in Bryant Lake Park, ensured everyone would be preparedfor anything and everything on race day. Not to complain, the drought of2012 also provided plenty of dry and comfortable days that made running

with a group of friends totally enjoyable. Races on October 7 were the main focus with a majority of class par-

ticipants running in the Twin Cities Marathon and TC 10 Mile races and an-other 12 MDRA runners lining up to run the Chicago Marathon.

Runners from the fall class also prepared for marathons in Mankato,Michigan, Iowa, Wisconsin, New York and Dublin, Ireland. Several others pre-ferred to test their fitness on trail races, including the North Face 50K, NorthFace 50 Miler and the Lean Horse 50 Miler. Not to be outdone, Rochelle Chris-tensen warmed up by swimming 4,224 yards and biking for 112 miles beforestarting her marathon at Ironman Wisconsin, September 9.

Special Guests: Meghan Krause and Kori Fitschen stopped by the MDRA Board meet-ing to give a short presentation on Girls on the Run and some of the background ofthat program. A flyer they gave out gives the following information: Girls on the RunTwin Cities, Inc. inspires girls in the 3rd to 5th grades to be joyful, healthy and confi-dent by combining training for a 3.1 mile race with important lessons about bodyimage, healthy living, friendship and more.

Secretary’s Report: The minutes of the July 9 meeting were approved.

Treasurer’s Report: Jody Kobbervig presented the Treasurer’s report. MDRA’s budgetperformance remains on track. The income was slightly behind projections but ex-penses are also down a similar amount. Advertising revenue is down in 2012 due todecreased ads from national sources (i.e., Running Network).

Office Manager’s Report:

Membership: 2011 2012

New Members 26 18

Renewals 56 48 (includes 9 two-year renewals)

Membership Total 2,184 2,484 (prior month: 2,485)

Membership totals for each month include online registrations that aren’t paid foruntil the following month. Those new members and renewals are then included inthat months membership chart.

RunMinnesota: Currently working on the September/October issue. That issue willbe the first that board members will write the President’s letter column. We willneed to think of a catchy new title for that column that runs in the front of the mag-azine each issue.

Volunteers: Still looking for volunteers to pitch in at upcoming races including theWomen’s Half Marathon, MDRA Victory Labor Day Races and the MDRA City ofLakes 25K.

COMMITTEE REPORTSAdvocacy: No report.

Club Administration: Board member Jim Delaplain brought a proposed amend-ment to the MDRA Bylaws regarding board elections. His proposal revised and up-dated section 4.8 which deals with Election of Directors. He will have his final draft of this pro-posal for the board to vote on at the September meeting.

Programs: The Fall Marathon Program now has over 100 paid participants with newrunners joining weekly. There was some discussion to add a paid support positionto the coaching staff as it is a great deal of work to put out water stops at many lo-cations each week and focus on coaching. Many thanks to Rob Lundquist for hisvolunteer services as he currently handles much of these water stop duties but isn’talways available.

Promotions: MDRA will have a booth at the Lady Speed Stick Women’s HalfMarathon and the Twin Cities Marathon, possibly Mankato Marathon as well.

Publications: It is time to start putting the 2013 edition of Running Minnesota to-gether. Editor, Barb Leininger has sent an email survey to all previous race listings. The deadline to get this information in is September 30. There are links to the sur-vey on our website and www.runningventures.com.

Race: MDRA rented equipment to 10 races since the last equipment report. Thetotal income was $705.00. MDRA also used the equipment at 3 MDRA races. TheMDRA 15K was this past weekend on Sunday, August 12. The 15K had excellentnumbers while the 5K was much smaller than last year.

Race: All the Victory races were well attended, and the City of Lakes 25K (COL) andthe MDRA 15K were tremendously successful.

COL is under review by the board. Discussion points include the possibility of anew race director, a different distance, an alternate race date, partnering with an-other race group to share the work of directing the race, and increasing MDRA pres-ence in the race. To aid the discussion, Drew Plackner is reviewing the budget, aswell as the financial and participant history of the race.

28 NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2012

O n the Shady RoadLake-loop of theRon Daws 25Kroute this late Oc-tober Sunday

morning, well before dawn, niceand cool much like the Aprilweather of that Spring race butnow ending the year; its Fall. Ikept recalling Jeff Winter as Imade way around quiet roads likeDominick, his iconic truck parkedlike a friend at check-points, mile-markers along with his drive-bysalways in touch with the runners, problems, the pace.

This year as he passed meearly on, he pulled ahead, parked, hopped out and saidrace-hellos, good-to-see-you,then with a wave, took off again.Later, on his counter-clockwisewrap-up while I ran the Birch-wood Road squiggle-route beforelanding on Baker Road, he wavedagain in passing.

Later that morning, showerspersisting and as happens in therear-with-the-gear where I findmyself, those behind my posi-tion—those few probably—giveup. No matter the place in a foot-race, front or back, one is eithertrying to catch someone to passor working to stay ahead of achaser from behind. I was pursu-ing a runner ahead by some dis-tance occasionally fanaticizing Imight be gaining. Nearing theCross of Glory Baptist Church inHopkins, the traditional gatheringspot for this event, beginning thelast five-mile loop, she dropped.

The distance to the next run-

ner is unknown to me as I saw noone for the remainder of the race .. . except for the finishers walkingthe several blocks from the finishline to the church. I jokinglyasked several to “Come on, addanother 5-miles, what the hey,”but that didn’t inspire anyone.

I emailed Jeff of my finish onMonday, April 9, putting all the posi-tive spin I could muster on the fact Imade it after all the stakes werepulled up. “Jeff, just for the unoffi-cial record, made it across the lineas the last finisher of the race butcertainly not last place (‘150th fin-isher of the 200 entrants,’ hereplied, nicely avoiding pointing outmany of the 200 didn’t show).

I couldn’t quit—it wouldn’t re-spect the race’s namesake, RonDaws—nor could I just stopthough my pace was an apparentstruggle. But, I didn’t really fret it.I finished when others didn’t,benefited from a great time, andenjoyed this route, too.

I’ve liked (all of the routes forthis race); perhaps it’s nice just tosee you holding what looked tobe the ‘old’ sign with the wackyarrows and directions; and yourcomments in the pre-meeting‘They built new sidewalks, we’regonna use ‘em’ was the correctsentiment, too.

Thanks again for your effortsfor this race.”

He added in his email reply,“Phillip, got your note andwanted to get a belated delayback to you (April 12, just threedays later; he was very good onthose details). You had the look of

someone who intended to finish.Glad you were able to do so andexperience the original terrain ofthe ‘old’ course. Many seemed toenjoy the challenge of the ‘PukesPeak’ by two (as the course loopsup-and-down that Bren Roadtriple-level hill twice; makes onewonder if the residents of some ofthose posh residences know theclassic name of their mount—‘Welive at the corner of Vista andPukes Peak’—extends back to theDaws Olympic Marathon trainingdays of the 1960s that Winter, PatLanin, Steve Hoag among othersran together.)

The race course sign you sawdates back to the mid-late nineties. All my personal best to you. Thanksfor your follow-up note. With mybest regards, Jeff Winter”

I interviewed Jeff a few yearsago at his home. Jeff, like manywith important accomplishments,

pursued many interests outsideof his race management duties(that also includes the brimming-with-history City of Lakes 25K).

He really perked-up talkingabout his interest in motorcyclesand engines, excitedly showingme a display piece used in ashow. I write a column on themedia coverage of professionaldrag racing where there is awhole class of bikes, so we talkedmore about his motorcycle knowl-edge than anything.

Now, both the namesake of theRon Daws 25K and Jeff, the race-di-rector with the forward vision to re-name his throwback competition inhonor of his friend, are “RunningFree Forever” together as Daws’marker reads at his entombment.
