Introduction

RunningSwissTeamsatyourclubcanbeintimidatingthefirsttimeyoudoit,butmostofyourplayerswilllovethechancetoplayinateamgameonoccasion.DuringtheGrandNationalTeamsqualifyingstageandduringJaneJohnsonClubAppreciationMonth,youcangiveoutadditionalmasterpointsbyrunningaSwiss.Youcanuseanyofyourregular,charityorupgradedclubchampionshipsandapplythemtowardsSwissTeamgames.Itisalsopossibletorunatwo-sessionSwiss,withpermissionfromtheACBLClubDepartment,byusingtwoofyourupgradedclubchampionshipstocoverthetwosessions.

There are several ways you can prepare for running your first Swiss:

♠Takeextratimetoreadthroughtheseinstructionsandfollowthemcarefully.

♠VisitalocalsectionalorregionaltournamentandaskthedirectorsifyoucanobserveandaskquestionsastheyconductaSwissTeamevent.

♠AskanexperiencedlocaldirectortomentoryouorplayinyourSwissthefirsttimeyourunit.

♥Varythenumberofteams.

♥Addnames.

♥Create“scores”andnewassignments.

♥Testasmanytimesasyoulike.

♥Whenfinished,“kill”thesectionanddeletethegamefile.

ThisguideisdesignedtowalkyouthroughsettingupalltypesofSwissmovementswithvaryingnumbersoftablesandprovidetipsonhowtohavethosegamesrunsmoothly.

Preparing for the Game

The following list includes supplies needed for running a Swiss:

♦Twosetsoftablemats♦Teamscoringtickets♦Teamscorecards♦Anextrasetofboards(dependsonsizeofevent)♦Whiteboardorlargeposterboard(forscoringand/ormakingnewassignments)

Itisbelievedthatdirectorialproblemsincreaseasthesizeofthegameincreases,butinthecaseofSwissTeams,havingeightormoreteamsactuallymakesiteasier.Eventswiththreetoseventeamsrequiredifferentanduniqueround-robinstylemovementsoeveryteamhasachancetoplayeveryotherteam.

Atypicalsingle-sessionSwissinvolvesfourmatcheswithsixboardspermatch.Thiswillvaryforthethreetoseventablemovements.Intermediate/NewcomerSwissTeamsmayonlyplayfiveboardspermatch.

Ifplayersarenewcomers,itisagoodideatohavea15-minutelessonpriortothegameonhowtokeepscore,howtocomparescoreswithteammatesandhowIMPsareconvertedtoVictoryPoints.

Considerstratifyingthegame.Stratifyingcanbedonebaseduponhighest-rankedplayerortheteamaverage.Stratifyinggivestheweakerteamsabetterchancetowinoverallpoints.

DoyourbesttoneverplayinyourownSwiss.TherearemanythingstodealwithwhenrunningaSwissTeam—scoresandassignments,caddying,changesinset-up,etc.Bynotplaying,youwillbeabletohandletheextraworkandprovidebettercustomerservicetoyourplayers.

Keepinmindthatitisbesttotrytokeepatleastonetablebetweenthetwoteamsthatwillbecompeting.Thiscutsdownonanyunauthorizedinformationthatmightbeoverheardatthecompaniontable.Acaddy(ifyouhaveone)oryouwillhavetonavigatebetweentables.Forgameswhereyouanticipatemorethan12tables,acaddycanbeabighelp.Turningthetablesona45-degreeangleincreasesthepathwaysintheroom.

Starting the Game

Afterallentriesaresold,finishtheset-upoftheroomdependingonthenumberofteamsyouhave,makeyourannouncements,helpgettheE-Wpairstothepropertablestostartandmakesuretheyshuffle.Starttheclockandletthemknowhowmuchtimetheyhavetoplay,compareandturninresults.

Oncetheteamshavestartedroundone,youshouldbeginthegameset-upinACBLscore.Youshouldpracticethisset-upafewtimessoyou’llhavetheopportunitytoseethevarietyofoptionsavailable.Ifyouaredealingwithalargegame,namesandstratificationcanbeenteredduringthesecond,thirdorevenfourthround.

There are several options available that can be very helpful:

♣F2=Sitoutsallowsyoutodealwithanyfive-orsix-personteams.Youcantrackwhenapairisnotplaying.

♣F8=Thisteamsoptionswillallowyoutoassignastationarytableforahandicappedplayer.Thisfunctioncanalsobeusedifateamwithdrawsbychangingtheendingroundnumber.

IMPswillbeconvertedtoVPsandpostedtothescreen.

17.Postthesescorestoyourwhiteboardorposterboard.Playersliketoseetheirscores,anditisagoodwaytocheckthatscoreshavebeenenteredcorrectly.

Ifyouenterascoreincorrectly,youmayrepeattheprocesspreviouslydescribed.ACBLscorewillaskifyouarecertainyouwanttodothisandmayalsoaskifyouwouldliketocancelanymatchesforthenextround.

Itmaybeappropriatetocancelthematchtomaintain“winnersvs.winners”and“losersvs.losers”inthematch-ups.IfthescorechangeisonlyacoupleofIMPs,youcanallowthecurrentmatch-uptostayasis.

18.Afterthescoreshavebeenentered,thematcheswillbeannouncedtothescreenforthenextround.Enteratablenumberandcommunicatetheassignmentusingyourwhiteboard,posterboardorteamscoreticket.

ACBLscoreisdesignedtomatchteamswiththeclosestscoresprovidingtheteamshavenotalreadyplayedeachother.Theprogramis“stratificationblind”anddoesnotmatchteamsbasedontheirmasterpoints,onlyontheactualcumulativescore.

19.Fortheremainingrounds,youwillrepeattheprocessin#16above.Whenyouenterscoresforthelastround,nonewmatch-upswillbeannounced.

20.Attheconclusionofthegame,backupyourgamefileandDBADDjustlikeyouwouldforapairgame.Youcanalsoproducearecapsheet,whichwillshowhowmanymasterpointseachplayerwonduringthegame.

Round robins for nine or more odd-numbered tablesACBLscoreset-upisthesameforagamewithodd-numberedtablesofnineormore.Withtheoddnumberoftables,ACBLscorewillautomaticallypairthethreehighestteamnumbersfortheroundrobin.

Aroundrobinisessentiallyathree-tableMitchellwiththetablesspacedapart.Setyourtablematsthatway—youcanusesomethinglikeC1,C2andC3orA11,B11andC11.

Inaroundrobin,eachtablewillhaveafullnumberofboards.Forinstance,ifplayingsix-boardmatcheswhilethoseinhead-to-headmatcheshavethreeboardsateachtable,theroundrobintableswilleachhavesix.C1wouldget1-6,C2wouldget7-12andC3wouldget13-18.

How to run the round robin:

♠Eachteamgoestoitshometable.

♠E-Wmovestothenexthighertable.

♠N-Sstaysstationaryfortwomatches.

♠Shuffleandplay.

♠Attheconclusionofthefirstmatch,thedirectormovestheboardstothenextlowernumberedtable.

♠Donotshuffle!

♠E-Wmovestothenexthighernumberedtable.

♠Startthenextmatch.

♠Theteamswillcompareafterbothmatcheshavebeenplayed.

Swiss with exactly three teamsWith three teams, you have two options:♥Playingtwomatchesof12boardseachor

Thesecondoptiongivesteamsachanceat“revenge”asthescoresforeachmatchstandontheirown.

When you reach the pairing option, select number 1 – Pair all rounds.

The matches will now be set for the entire game. You will be able to enter and post scores after each round. No assignments will be announced to the screen as they have been preset (see table below).
