The winter

bluesWell, winter’s here. It seems early or is that just me? I can’t believe we’ve had our first fire already. I just love a wood burning fire and it was too hard to resist, even though the flue needs a clean.

Our big feature this month is on Lockwood Smith’s Woodleigh Belgian Blues. Get outta here… they’d have to be the next big hit on the menu, at Tokyo’s top restaurants at least! Forget Wagyu at US$250+ per fillet. Joking aside, they are truly magnificent beasts and it looks as though they live a privileged life at Woodleigh. A fascinating story. It must be a pleasant respite for Lockwood breeding these beasts after a hard day at the ‘office’.

Grant McKechnie’s story on landscaping has really got us thinking. He has some great ideas - a ha ha

instead of a fence would work well on our land. Now we need an article on how to install one...

You’d be right in thinking, why doesn’t a fine publication like this have a column on all things equine? Well, at last we have a horse column, and writer Sandy Reid has years of experience to draw on. If you have any horsey questions let us know and we’ll put them to Sandy and post the answers on our website.

Lastly, our health feature is on a topic I’ve been curious about for a while – are those automatic insect dispensers safe? Some disturbing new evidence suggests they’re not, for young children at least.

Don’t forget to remember Rodney’s Rural Lifestyle Magazine, as a great many of you do, when you’re talking with advertisers – it really helps. Thanks in advance.

Ever since I laid eyes on Lockwood Smith’s beautiful Belgian Blues at the Helensville A and P show in 2006 I’ve been fascinated by these magnificent animals, my favourite being Woodleigh Omen.

Looking for this 1374kg blue bull at the Kumeu Show this year I found his competing days are over, but in his place was a splendid line-up of younger Belgian Blues, all of which won ribbons on the day. At the end of the competition, of the four winners vying for the coveted Supreme Champion award, three were Belgian Blues from Woodleigh and it was Omen’s replacement, Woodleigh Louis, who took out the coveted top prize.

The judge’s analysis of the qualities of the Belgian Blue bull calf who won his section gave onlookers an indication of

why the Woodleigh breed do so well in competition – “an outstanding, athletic younger bull with impeccable structure and exceptional growth, a picture of the breed with excellent muscling at the back, lovely stretch, a nice high end, good back length, depth and volume and a good set of testicles.” Needless to say Lockwood, his wife Alexandra and the three Woodleigh handlers present all appeared very pleased with the day’s successes.

Wanting to know more about these animals I arrange to visit Woodleigh, the 900 acre farm where Lockwood Smith was born and raised, and which he now shares with Alexandra. My bloke Keith comes along for the ride and, after a night sleeping in a cosy KP railway carriage at a Dargaville camping ground, we make our way to Ruawai for the interview.

SEE US AT THE FRANKLIN A&P SHOW FEB 19-21, 2010Coming up the Smith’s winding driveway we’re struck by

the beauty of the landscape – lush green paddocks as far as the eye can see, dotted with scatters of contentedly grazing Belgian Blues. We’re chuffed that our visit begins with a tour of the house and gardens - extensive renovations have just been completed and the results are stunning – and then, while Keith and Alexandra continue to talk gardening, I get down to the business of finding out about the Belgian Blues. Where did they originate, how did Lockwood get into breeding them, what value do they have as a business proposition and why does he compete in agricultural shows year after year when, as MP for Rodney and Speaker of the House of Representatives, his diary is so full?

I learn that the breed originated in Belgium. Initially called ‘Central and Upper Belgian’, the cattle produced were the result of mixing the genes of red pied and black pied cattle of central Belgium with those of Durham (Shorthorn) bulls. Along the way a genetic mutation occurred, and it is selection of this mutation that set the path for breeders in the years to come.

It goes like this. Every mammal carries a gene that encodes myostatin, a protein that performs the function of inhibiting muscle growth and enables the mammal to maintain a balance between their muscles and their skeleton. Because the Belgian Blue mutation deactivates this gene the cattle’s muscle growth is uninhibited, while their fat growth is inhibited, resulting in production of the massive lean muscle that has become known as ‘double muscle’.

To the untrained eye the result of this selective breeding is not pretty, something I learn when Lockwood shows me a couple of brochures featuring Belgian Blues in their original home country. There’s something grotesque about their build and stature which, when enhanced by the fact that the rumps and shoulders are shaved to show off the massive muscles, is eloquent testament to why these animals have been famously called ‘a freak of nature’ and ‘the bovine version of The Incredible Hulk’. In Bigger Stronger Faster, a 2008 documentary about the devastating effects of steroid use, a Belgian Blue is shown as an example of the naturally attained muscle mass that body builders can only dream

Belgian Blues grazing at Woodleigh.

of. Will copycat genetic alteration of the bodies of aspiring body builders be the next big thing after steroids, the commentator muses?

Lockwood tells me he began breeding Belgian Blues when he returned to the family farm after completing his PhD in agricultural science at Adelaide University and working as New Zealand Dairy Board’s marketing manager for Central and South East Asia before entering politics. Years earlier, Woodleigh had been run by his father as an Angus stud. Lockwood decided that, as he couldn’t make a difference to that breed, he would set himself the “fascinating challenge” of perfecting a different breed and fitting it for local conditions. After careful consideration he chose the Belgian Blue as his target.

While the Belgian Blue was first brought to New Zealand in the 1980s, interest in the breed here wasn’t high because their massive shoulders inevitably made for difficult calving, resulting in the necessity of a caesarean birth. In addition, while they’re cubicle farmed in Europe, their leg structure, sloping pelvis, reduced intestines and small rumen made them unsuited to grazing our hill country.

Undaunted, Lockwood harnessed his interest in genetics and set up a breeding programme to eliminate these problems, introducing selected Belgian Blue semen into an Angus/Friesian based herd. Beginning his quest in 1988, in 7 generations he had produced the beautifully streamlined,

polled Belgian Blues Woodleigh is known for today. Once an animal is 15/16 Belgian Blue it can be registered as purebred, Lockwood tells me.

Other interesting facts I learn about Belgian Blue genetics include that, in spite of the name, the cattle can range in colour from black through to white. Those that appear blue have the roan (Rn) gene, which mixes dark and white hairs on the coat to give the appearance of blueness. Also of interest is that genetic modifications around myostatin are now being closely studied and trialled by scientists, with a view to finding treatment for muscle diseases in humans.

While as a politician his time is pretty much spoken for, Lockwood makes it his business to find time for competing. Whenever there’s an agricultural show on (and Woodleigh has competed in several so far this year) the Smiths and their helpers get up at 2.30am, load the cattle onto the truck and set off from Ruawai at 4am for an 8.30am start. Once they arrive, the cattle are washed and brushed to look their bovine best for the judges.

An encyclopaedic memory enables Lockwood to recount the results from each show, including details about which animals his were beaten by and why. In terms of prizes, Woodleigh never comes away empty handed - after winning the Supreme Champion award at the Kumeu show this year the judge warmly congratulated Lockwood and his staff for achieving what he’d aimed for in his breeding programme.

But while he is immensely proud of his competition successes in the mixed classes, selection of individual cattle for breeding is based not on show results but on performance (for example calf size), which is carefully tracked using the Beef Plan computer programme.

In terms of the revenue generated by the Woodleigh breeding programme, I’m told that some local farmers purchase Woodleigh bulls as terminal sires with a view to getting meaty, well-muscled offspring to be sold for the table, and that a meat company supplies supermarkets with Belgian Blue meat for part of the year.

In Lockwood’s view this is “the meat of the future”. Good structure in an animal means a long life and consequently, long productivity. The meat is a healthy choice because it is very lean and so tender it requires little cooking (90 seconds on each side for a steak, for example). The mild flavour may not be to everyone’s taste, but Lockwood assures me the addition of subtle herb or fruit induced flavours produces a delicious result.

The business, then, has huge potential, but at present is deliberately kept small. “My dilemma is in not being here,” says Lockwood, “there’s no use building a brand if you can’t supply all year round, so growing the business is a project for the future.”

Meanwhile, there’s plenty to do managing the breeding programme and gathering the accolades – as we go to press the news is in that at April’s Royal Easter Show Woodleigh won places in every class they were entered, including the Royal Champion Special Progeny W F Smith trophy (Louis with a son and daughter) and the Senior Bull Camveray Cup, more evidence that these Belgian Blues are a great cattle breeding success story.

We’ll make quick work of the tallest gorse on steep, hard-to-reach sites.

Steep gullies and hillsides are often left for gorse to overtake because it’s too difficult to control. Spraying requires a lengthy die-off period and still leaves the problem of removal. Burning can promote rapid re-growth and can damage non-target vegetation. With our new 22.5tonne machine and its fixed tooth

mulching head we go where no others have before. We’ll turn gorse-ridden land into productive farm land quickly and efficiently. You’ll save on spraying costs and re-vegetation or re-sowing can start immediately. Any gorse regrowth can then be more easily managed and maintained.

Book a dental assessment for your horse for just $30 and make sure your horse is ready for winter (only until 31 May 2011).

Winter Special – Dental Checks just $30!

If your horse has a heavy coat and you are not going to clip it for hunting or winter shows, you will probably just need a canvas cover with a light wool lining, or a synthetic rug with a light fill of 200gm.

If you plan to clip your horse it would be wise to add another layer of warmth. Horses’ winter coats are not usually set until May, so waiting until then to clip may be better than having to do the job all over again in another month’s time.

Check your old winter covers towards the end of summer to see if they’re in need of repair. Rips and tears can let in a lot of water. You also need to check straps and clips are in good order, as a broken strap can lead to nasty accidents. I have at times come home to find a horse with a cover hanging around its neck. Sometimes they do stand quietly until help arrives, but if you don’t check them regularly, or have youngsters not used to covers, there can be disastrous results.

It’s very easy to overheat your horse, and this is actually worse than their not having a cover. Changing the cover during the day is advisable, but if you are working this is not always possible. Having some trees or shelter in their paddock helps the horse stay cool when the days are warmer.

Check whether your pasture has enough grass for the winter. A horse eats the same quantity as two cows, so the optimum grazing ratio is one horse per hectare. The energy and nutrient value of grass drops though winter and the amount of grass needed depends on your horse’s temperament and breed. You have to be careful with thoroughbreds (or other hot-blooded horses, like Arabs) and take into account the amount of work they are given. If you just plan to ride in the weekends, your thoroughbred will need only medium pasture (avoiding clover and rye pastures if possible) and plenty of hay. Feeds I recommend are beet (soaked), oaten chaff and copra meal and hard feed such as grain. Oats can be added for energy.

Late Autumn is upon us and by now you will have noticed your equine friends have pretty much grown their winter coats. If you intend covering them for the winter, there are a few things you need to know.

Being wi th Horses

Client Based Training and Instruction in

Client Based Training andInstruction in Natural Horsemanship

Spring and Autumn growth flush can bring out the mycotoxins in grass and this can result in all kinds of strange behavior in horses, with nerve and muscle tension causing spooking, and making the most well-behaved horse a nervous wreck (as well as the rider)! Adding binding agents to the feed daily has made a huge difference with my horses, however they are all individuals and you may have different results.

Feedback? Given this is our first equine column, please take a moment jump onto our website and let us know what you would like to see in future or email/post us your thoughts. Ed.

Remember the golden rule, “feed according to the work being done.” If you are not going to ride for a week, lay off the hard feed and supplement with hay.

Good quality hay is important too. Hay stored for a long time loses much of its nutritional value. You can recognize good quality hay by the way it parts easily in slices, is not dusty and stuck together and has smells sweet. It’s a bonus if you can see the pasture your hay comes from. Make sure it is free of ragwort (poisonous to horses), which can occasionally occur in hay. If the hay is not good, more than likely your horse will turn his nose up at it even if he is hungry - our equine friends are fussier eaters than cattle.

In the next issue I will talk about care of horses’ feet in winter, good places to ride and activities to enjoy during the colder season.

Happy horsin’!

Our children at that stage were 18 months and 3 ½ yrs and naturally we didn’t want them being bitten my mosquitoes at night, especially during the summer months.

We considered the option of wall-mounted dispensers, which send a regular burst of insecticide spray to combat the many flies, mosquitoes, ants and other insects invading our home. But we were concerned about the potential damage the pyrethrin and other chemicals sprayed repeatedly from these dispensers might have on our kids’ developing brains.

Pyrethrin is derived from seed cases of the perennial plant pyrethrum (Chrysanthemum cinerariaefolium, pictured above), and is grown commercially, mostly in Kenya, for worldwide distribution. Pyrethrin is combined with another chemical, piperonyl butoxide (PBO) in automatic dispensers to increase their insect killing ability.

Initially, my mind was put at rest when I read Consumer Magzines’s report on the safety of dispensers, “Are automatic insect sprays safe? 2 Mar 2009 [1]. The report was published in response to a reader’s concerns about having these sprays operate continuously in her home: "I have a 2 1/2-year-old,” she wrote, “and I need to know how safe these repellents are." Consumer’s response was that “Automatic sprays are safe to use, provided you follow the instructions on the can.” and “ these two chemicals have been approved by the Environmental Risk Management Authority for use at

A while back my wife and I were thinking about the pros and cons of using automatic insect dispensers in our home.

the concentrations and frequencies emitted by this type of device.”

Late last month I was reading Investigate Magazine’s story April 2011 [2] about the latest findings on the potential neurotoxicity of these compounds, so I followed up the references for more detail.

The first study of its kind, published February 11, 2011 by the American Academy of Pediatrics [3] examined the effects of these compounds on humans, particularly with respect to prenatal exposure and this study represents the first evaluation of their potential toxicity to children.

The study explained that scientists of the Columbia Center for Children’s Environmental Health at Columbia University’s Mailman School of Public Health have determined a significant link between PBO and delayed mental development at 36 months [4]. Megan Horton of Columbia University’s Mailman School of Public Health and the lead researcher reports, "This drop in IQ points is similar to that observed in response to lead exposure,” and added, “While perhaps not impacting an individual’s overall function, it is educationally meaningful and could shift the distribution of children in the society who would be in need of early intervention services".

The study clearly suggests the effects of these chemical compounds could be neuro-toxic to the foetal brain and delay the mental development of young children.

So are these compounds present in dispensers here… ?

Most certainly they are. In the several brands I examined at time of print, all contained PBO.

Even though our children are now older, and we know they weren’t exposed prenatally to these compounds, there is strong suspicion in my mind that repeated and long term exposure could pose significant risk. The obvious conclusion for me is that it is not worth the risk, and that dispensing with our dispensers and seeking alternative means like fly screens on the windows and doors is the safest thing to do.

Landscaping a rural

part twoblockBy Grant McKechnie

The numbers of plants needed, the mature size of the plants and the size of the areas to be landscaped are all likely to increase – sometimes significantly.

Preservation of views is also more likely to be an issue in rural landscapes. There might be a bush back-drop to keep, a long vista out over surrounding countryside, or a lovely

Last month I talked about how landscaping a rural property can require a shift in thinking if you are more accustomed to urban gardens.

view down to the pond at the bottom of your garden. Or maybe you want to be able to sit on your deck and survey your own paddocks and the sleek animals they contain.

Lack of thought when it comes to plant placement – or perhaps lack of knowledge of how big plants are going to get and how quickly – will soon see views obliterated.

If you have a view at the end of the garden, the right planting will not only preserve it, but can enhance it by framing the view.

An easy way to do this is to have a decent-sized tree each side of the lawn,

with your view in between.

A more elaborate way to frame the view will see you plant a border down each side of your lawn. It could be very formal, with perfectly straight edges defined with immaculately clipped hedges.

Alternatively, but still formal, you could create an inverted crescent of border gardens each side of your lawn, once again perfectly defined with clipped hedges. If you prefer a less formal look, plant borders with nice, flowing curves down each side. You could also put ‘full stops’ at the end of your border and frame the view

with two good-sized trees, preferably matching. I can picture a pair of Japanese maples here, for instance, or liquidambars if size is not a problem.

At the end of a lawn, a fence often interrupts the view. If the lie of the land permits, you may be able to do away with a fence and construct a ha-ha instead. A ha-ha is a retaining wall that does two jobs: it acts as a barrier to keep stock out and provides a hidden edge to the lawn. The idea is that your lawn runs out to the top edge of the retaining wall, which then drops down into the paddock, negating the need for

a fence and giving you an unhindered long view across your lawn and beyond.

Having a bigger garden can allow room for destinations – places to visit for a purpose, such as a seat under a shady tree or tucked away in a nice nook, where you can sit, reflect or enjoy the view.

If you want to create a bit of mystery about your destination, form a path leading to it via a wooden archway, or clip an archway within a hedge. People won’t be able to resist the urge to see what’s down the path and through the arch.

And on the other side of the arch, have a surprise waiting for them. It could be a water feature, a petanque court, a veggie patch, a potager garden or maybe a walled-in garden full of white flowering plants.

If you have the space, a woodland makes a great destination. During summer, a path through a leafy woodland of deciduous trees makes for a cool retreat – maybe a perfect place for a seat or hammock. And during autumn and early winter, you and your visitors can stroll down the path to admire the autumn colour on the trees and the leaf fall on the ground.

Plant your woodland trees close together (3m to 5m apart) so they grow together quickly and smother most grass growth. As the trees mature, the woodland will pretty much maintain itself and you won’t have to mow round the trees.

While we’re talking about planting, it’s probably a good time to remind you that May to September are generally accepted as the best months for planting, so your new plants have a chance to get their roots down and established before the next summer dry comes along.

Happy planting.
