Hi Everyone, I do hope you are enjoying the lovely sunshine we are getting between the heavy downpours. This augurs well for some lovely “Front Gardens in Bloom” in Kingsdown & Ringwould later in the year. It’s good to see that the Garage Safari was so successful again this year and I was delighted to learn that along with the
Kingsdown Church and Kingsdown Rocks the Rural Roundup can be looking forward to receiving a donation. Thank you so much Rex & Rita. To continue on with the subject of the Churches, I was surprised to learn how much money it takes to maintain the lovely buildings we have in our Parishes. I hope you all read Cathy’s very comprehensive, extended article this month explaining exactly how much money it takes and where it all goes. Although I am not actually a regular ’Church-goer’ I can sympathise with the struggle it must be to keep these Churches going and I’m sure you will all agree with me that we should, if we are able, support Cathy by each giving a small donation to help towards her predicament and make sure we don’t lose any of our Village Churches. Dear Friends Will YOUR Parish Church be here in 5 years’ time? I believe YOUR Parish and Church Matters. Following a couple of comments that I have received lately, I would just like to try and dispel a few myths and put forward some facts regarding your local parish church – whether you live in Ringwould, Kingsdown, Ripple or Sutton – the facts are the same.
St. John’s Church, St. Nicholas Church, St. Mary’s Church and St. Peter & St. Paul’s Church are YOUR churches. They belong to everyone. The basic structure of our present parish system was developed in the tenth century and survived both the Viking invasions and the Norman Conquest in 1066. In the middle of the 13th century, the Church of England became an organised body containing some 9,500 parishes under the control of the Bishops.
As parish churches we do not receive any funding – either from the Government or the Church of England.
Each year, each parish is asked to pay to Canterbury Diocese what is called its “Parish Share” to pay for the costs of training, paying and housing the clergy and providing them with a pension and also to provide support and advice to the parishes. A complex formula is used to calculate the amount each parish pays but it includes the numbers on the church electoral role, the numbers attending services and whether the parish is in an area of deprivation. This year, the parishes have to pay the following amounts: Ringwould - £19,368; Kingsdown - £31,824; Ripple - £3,900 and Sutton - £8,448. In addition, the PCCs (Parochial Church Councils) – the equivalent of the Board of Directors of a company – also have to maintain, heat, light and insure the buildings.
In addition, last year at St. John’s, we installed new heating at a cost of just over
£60,000. We are also having work carried out to repair the building – in particular the stonework and stained glass windows, in addition to which all the guttering needs to be replaced. Likewise we need to carry out repairs to the tower at Ringwould – an estimated £20,000 for the tower itself and some £50,000 to carry out repairs to the bells. Repairs are also being carried out at Ripple following subsidence when a drain collapsed – the amount is approximately £10,000 and at Sutton we will shortly begin major drainage works which will again cost some £10,000. At the same time we are carrying out work to Studdal Hall.
These are huge amounts to find and those who worship in the churches cannot raise these amounts on their own. This is why we have fund raising events – to ensure that these buildings continue to exist for future generations. Organisations such as “The Friends of St. Nicholas” and “St. John’s Heritage Association” exist to try and raise money to preserve the buildings – which in church speak is called “the fabric” for future genera-tions. The “fabric fund” is simply a fund where monies raised are kept or “ring fenced” to pay for the repair of the structure and building of the church. I often hear the comment “the church is always asking for money!” Well, last year St. John’s Kingsdown spent some £111,355 which works out to £2,141 per week! The parish had to raise this amount – although we were fortunate in receiving grants of £30,000
from charitable trusts. (continued on page 9)

Continued from page 7 - So yes, we are always trying to raise money, but it is to ensure that your buildings are preserved for you and for future generations to enjoy. So that couples can continue to be married in “their” parish church, so that babies and adults can continue to be baptised and to ensure that there is a place where relatives and friends can say their final farewells to loved ones, many of whom are laid to rest in one of the parish churchyards, which are also maintained by the parish.
Some of you may have seen the latest episode of “Rev” where the church was closed. Well, the simple fact is that unless the buildings are kept in good order and supported then eventually they will close on grounds of health and safety if we can’t find the funds to keep the buildings in good order. My hope and prayer is that each parish will want to keep its parish church at the heart of the community – not only now but for future generations.
As a Christian I believe that “All things come from God, and of God’s own do we give Him.” If you would like to help support your local church there are a number of ways; by becoming an active member of the church, by supporting fund raising events, by making a one-off gift payment, by placing a regular standing order or perhaps including a legacy in your will. Please do something today to help preserve your local parish church for today’s and tomorrows’ generations. Walmer Horse & Dog Show 2014 – Sunday 15 June 2014 This year will be the 37th running of the Walmer Horse & Dog Show in the lovely grounds of
Walmer Castle. We are very fortunate to be able to hold our Show there with kind permission of
English Heritage. The Show is run to give local riders and owners the opportunity to partake in a
larger show ground than is available for many of the other local events. We invite competitors and spectators to witness an exciting day of equestrian and canine competition, serious and not so
serious.
The Show is run also to raise funds for charity and this year we have selected our charities
for personal reasons. Firstly, we are supporting the Kent Air Ambulance Trust. This charity is well known to all of us and the Show has worked with the Trust in the past. Our link this year concerns
the sad case of a promising young triathlete who was killed earlier this year on the Dover-Deal road.
Many of you will be familiar with the sad details of this event.
Our second charity is actually a trust fund set up by the family and friends of a riding instructor Natasha Lowe who died of a heart attack. The trust is to provide financial assistance for
her two year old daughter who suffers from the same congenital heart defect as her mother.
Our third charity is The Royal Marsden Hospital Melanoma and Sarcoma Research Fund.
Sarcoma is an aggressive cancer which led to the death of the father of one of the Show directors. The melanoma and sarcoma unit at The Royal Marsden is the largest in Europe and one of the
largest in the world.
Finally, we are supporting Chancepixies Animal Welfare, the dog rescue charity in West
Hougham. Chancepixies is committed to solving the cause of animal abandonment, mistreatment and abuse at source - irresponsible ownership and breeding - in all its forms.
This year the securing of sponsorship has been a challenge. Work and personal commit-
ments have affected the committee’s time to organize the Show. The Show organisers will welcome

Kingsdown continues……………………...
A very big thank you from Julie and the family of the late Brian Powell.
As you may know by now my dear husband Brian Powell lost his most bravely fought battle against advanced lung cancer, and passed away here at home, on Easter Monday, 21st April. He had been a very fit man up to April/May 2013 when we heard he had been struck down by advanced lung cancer, out of the blue! True to character he fought it and was very positive throughout until the dreaded cancer won the battle. At his memorial service in St John’s Church, Kingsdown, following the private cremation, on 1st May, my family and I were quite overwhelmed by the number of people who attended the service, the church was overflowing with people! After this was the wake at Kingsdown Golf Club where once again many people came to join us in our celebration of his life. He had supported Teenage Cancer Trust for many years, having completed many sponsored walks in aid of the charity – Hadrian’s Wall, Ring of Kerry, Cornish Coastal Path and others, raising many thousands of pounds. During his battle against the cancer he commented several times that he now knew what young people were going through when they too found out they had various forms of cancer. He requested that at his funeral any donations should be to that very worthy charity. During the church service, over £1553 was donated, and more cheques are still being received by the funeral directors, E.B. Cavell in Deal. He would have been so delighted if he knew how kind people have been to make such donations. On behalf of our family, I would like to thank all of our friends and neighbours for all the beautiful cards of condolence and wonderful letters we have received. Julie Powell
KINGDOWN BEACH CLEAN Saturday 26th April 2014
A really big thank you to the 30 or so people who, despite the very wet and windy conditions on the morning, turned up to clean the beach. We collected rubbish in the area from the sea to the road, and Oldstairs Bay to Boundary Road. We finished with about 50 large orange sacks, which Dover District Council collected very promptly after the event (although some large pieces of fishing net and an old fire extinguisher, found in the bushes, still need collecting.) Our willing volunteers offered a few observations which we hope will be acted upon by the Parish Council, Dover District Council, and the organisers of future similar events. The area from the lifeboat house to Walmer needs to be included in another clean-up; there was a lot of fishing tackle including fishing hooks, found abandoned on the beach; the boat plot owners need to be asked to tidy up around their boats, (some old collapsing boats and sails need to be disposed of), and the campaign saying ‘there is no such thing as the poo fairy’ needs to be repeated, because volunteers found nappies plus dog and human excrement on the beach. If any other local groups would like to contact us, we can save them some ‘behind the scenes’ organisation. We have prepared a risk assessment and have all the contact numbers of the waste collection services of Dover District Council. Thank you again to those who braved the weather, and we hope everyone enjoys our litter free beach now the summer is coming!

Last month we received a letter from Michael Wilshaw, Her Majesty’s Chief Inspector, regarding an interim assessment on our school that had been undertaken by Ofsted. In summary the letter states that whilst Ofsted Inspectors haven’t visited the school since 2011 they feel our high standards and performance have been sustained. As a result of this they have decided to defer our next Ofsted Inspection until the summer term of 2015 at the earliest. We will of course continue our drive towards
school improvements, working hard to maintain high standards and good education for all our children.
Sporting Achievements for 2013 – 2014
This has been another busy and successful year for sport at Kingsdown School. We have run two boys and two girls’ football teams throughout the season. The boys did well in their league and got to the Final in the cup, played on Wednesday 21st May. The girls’ team were unbeaten in the league and won our schools “Triad” cup. We entered a Year 3 and a Year 4 team in the Dover/Deal schools tennis tournament at the Deal Indoor Tennis Centre. Each of the teams was unbeaten and had to play against each other in the final. Congratulations go to our year 3 team (Tom, Charlie, Lewis and Wallace) who will now represent this area in the Kent Finals. The Swimming team entered the Deal/Dover Schools gala and finished a very creditable 3rd overall. Congratulations go to Evie who won the Gold Medal for the 25m Breaststroke. In the Northbourne Park schools Cross Country event, 36 teams took part and we finished 9th overall. Jo Hygate

Save the Children is grateful to everyone at Kingsdown and Ringwould CEP school for welcoming Sarah Spong of the local branch to the school so that she could talk to the pupils about the work of the charity in the six months that has passed since Typhoon Haiyan struck in the Philippines. The pupils have previously raised money for Save the Children, so Sarah explained how that money had been used to help children affected by the disas-ter. Save the Children has delivered 400,000 litres of drinking water to the most affected areas. Many people survive disasters but would otherwise be made unwell by drinking contaminated water. We have delivered 31,300 'hygiene kits'. These kits contain items such as toothbrushes, shampoo, soap, towels namely items essential to ensuring that families stay clean and healthy. We sent 12 Doctors to the islands and they have been travelling the islands in mobile health clinics providing access to healthcare, to the most remote areas. The situation is still precarious in that more than 500,000 homes have been washed away as well as schools, clinics and roads. Save the Children know that a child has the capacity to recover from the most ex-treme trauma if provided with the appropriate support. Save the Children has provided 'Child friendly spaces' ie spaces for children to play. So far they have been used by 16,712 children. We are also involved in rebuilding schools and have been working closely with the Department of Education in providing equipment for children to re-start school. We have made great progress in the six months since the disaster but much more needs to be done. Just £3 can buy life saving antibiotics that will save a child's life. Some comments arising from Sutton-by-Dover Parish Council Meeting
At the Annual General Meeting on the 6th May Barbara Merriman was elected as our new Chairman after the resignation of Carolyn Clews who temporarily held this position. Congratulations were given to Barbara by the Parish Councillors.
There is a vacancy for a Councillor on the PC and anyone who is interested in becoming a Councillor please would they contact the Parish Clerk with a short CV by email or letter at the address above.
Mrs Knight explained that a group of people in the parish are to set up an online scrap
book for Parishioners to send in local historical photos and literature so that an interesting archive of the parish can be made. The Parish Council intend to provide a link for the online scrapbook on the Parish Council website. Material for the online scrapbook can be emailed to [email protected] .
A Memorial bench is to be purchased by Mr Odell and the PC in memory of Mrs Barbara Odell. It will be placed on the picnic site at Jacks Bush.
Ron Little is looking for Ashley Allotment holders and residents to make the changes in the allotment orchard which were suggested by the Wildlife Conservation Association to enhance the wildlife. Please contact Mr Little if you can help.
The PC said it was sorry to hear that the Spectrum Club had had to close for the time
being due to the lack of children. Spectrum Club is an after school club for primary school children held in Studdal.

SUTTON PARISH SCRAPBOOK – 2014.
Old photographs of our neighbourhood attract a lot of interest when they appear in local newspapers. I noticed this particularly when some photos of Sutton village were published recently in “The Mercury”. I assume the owner of the pho-tos had allowed the Newspaper to make copies so that we could all share his reminders of our village history. There must be many more old and interesting photos and other documents among the 300 households in the Parish, items which many would interested to see.
A small group of us plan to have a computer and scanner at Sutton Fete on Saturday June 21st this year [2.00pm to 4.00pm]. We would like to make copies, while you wait, of any photos, newspaper cuttings or other details of general Parish interest that Fete visitors care to bring us; there will be no need for the owners to part with their treasures for more than a few minutes.
In the meantime if anyone has suggestions or items to include please send me details using the email address – [email protected]

Why is it that we suffer from very high winds just as the young plants and seedlings start to put on some growth? And why is it that we have to have that wretched stuff called Bindweed put on tremendous growth and not be affected by anything that is thrown at it?
Just a couple of things that make us a nation of gardeners, whether we are amateurs or professionals and isn't it fun!! There is (or was by the time you read this), a tall weed at the back of my borders with white flower heads that gave the garden a lift on some dark wet days. Sorry I don't know the name of it!! So there is a place for some weeds in the garden. We only call them weeds when they grow in the wrong place. But not Bindweed!! There will be a lot of rescuing of shrubs and plants during the next few days.
A very big thank you to everyone who contributed, helped and bought at the Plant sale, and the committee of the Garage Safari, whom we would also like to thank for allowing us to hold it on the same day as their event. We had a very good day even if it was windy and over cast. The programmes for the Annual Show which is on Sunday 31st August are on sale for £1 in the P.O. There is no fee to enter any of the classes this year and we hope that you will take part.
The speaker for the meeting on Monday 30th June will be Neil Arnold telling us about Creepy Kent. Please come along as all are welcome. Membership is £7 for the year and £1 for visitors. Susan Martin - Chairman

WI Meeting May This meeting was our Resolutions Meeting in which two members put forward their arguments for and against a Resolution which is voted on at each branch. The Resolution this year covered the subject of whether one should discuss with the family one’s wishes on organ donation. This prompted a very lively debate. The Resolution was unanimously carried in favour of discussion with family members. We then enjoyed our tea with cakes galore! We are looking forward to a conducted tour of Dungeness Nature Reserve early next month and have also arranged a coach trip to the Detling Show in July. Two theatre trips have also been booked – to CATS in June and to HAY FEVER in September, both at the Marlowe Theatre, Canterbury. Our next WI meeting will be held on June 9th at 2.00 p.m at Ringwould Village Hall and the speaker will be Sue Watson on the subject of “Songs of Kent”.

A ‘Tribute’ to Kingsdown Following two lovely recent articles re ’the kindness of strangers’, I am moved to come full circle in wanting to express my thanks to ‘the kindness of Kingsdown’. Having lost my mother in early February, my wife Jacqueline (Jaky) Elizabeth Dalrymple was admitted to hospital on the 19th February, and tragically passed away on the 18th of March, aged just 63. In the three months that have since passed by, the amount of support and unselfish generosity afforded to me has been truly beyond belief. X. Folk have left me food parcels and done shopping for me. So many people visited Jaky in hospital, and have sent me emails, cards, text messages and flowers etc by way of love and affection. I had a great deal of help too with the funeral and reception arrangements, and for Jaky’s farewell evening too. Donations were invited for the ‘Brain-Research-Trust’ for Jaky, and such plea raised a total of £3,120 (£2,500 of which came from the people of Kingsdown). The village has been just quite amazing and I thank each and every one of you for your kind support and friendship. I couldn’t have made it this far without you all. X. Finally, I would like to thank Reverend Cathy Sigrist for her immense contribution following Jaky’s death. The people of Kingsdown are indeed ‘special’, none more so than Cathy, and we are lucky to have such a wonderful and committed person at the very helm of our community. My thanks to you all again. Tea and Chat in Ripple…Tea and Chat met in Ripple Village Hall on May 12th to enjoy the tea, sandwiches, cake, and, of course, chat. The afternoon also included a Quiz which received the usual reception – delight for the known answers, derision for the unknown. The next meeting will be on Monday, June 9th at 2.00pm in the Village Hall.
Ripple Parish Council… At the Annual General Meeting held on May 8th, Councillor Daphne Lee was elected to serve as Chairman for a further year.
The Council discussed at length the proposed housing development off Station Road in Walmer. Although this application does not directly affect Ripple Parish, councillors had grave concerns regarding the increase in traffic, both in Walmer and the surrounding villages. With Ripple being just one of the parishes being used as a ‘rat-run’ it was felt that the volume of traffic would increase considerably.
Further speed checks have been carried out in the village recently and it is believed that several vehicles were caught over the speed limit, although no further details are available at present.

In May KCG members were some of the first visitors to the South Foreland Lighthouse to experience going out onto the scaffolding platforms. Hard hats and high-vis jackets were the order of the day, and it was a spectacularly clear evening for seeing the coast of France. In contrast the ‘early birders’ experienced wet and very windy weather on the Dawn Chorus walk, and even the birds kept sensibly under cover. Our thanks go to the Zetland for ‘drying us out’ and giving us breakfast at 8am and of course to Ken Chapman (SBBOT) and Sarah Roantree (KCG) who listened and identified the birds.
Following the favourable comments we received after planting bulbs around the village KCG has offered to sponsor hanging baskets for the businesses in Upper Street this summer. These should be in place in early June and we hope they will help to make the village look even more attractive. The recipients will be The Post Office, Del’s, The Kings Head, the Oxtail and the hairdressers.
Once again thanks go to Rex and Rita Martin who did a fantastic job organising the Garage Safari which must have had a record attendance this year and raised over £1,000 for the village.
