The increase in the number of learners enrolling at Paardekraal Primary School has forced the school to introduce a new policy regarding the payment of admission fees.

However, the new rules are not going down well with the parents, who accuse the school authorities of “going against the rules of the South African Schools Act.” Phistos Mnisi, the chairperson of the Paardekraal Crisis Committee, told Leseding News that parents and guardians have been told to pay R380 per child in admission fees.

Mnisi, whose committee has since written a letter to authorities at the Bojanala District of Education offices, says the admission fees are too steep for most of the parents.

“Previously, parents and guardians used to play R100 per child in admission fees. The new payments are too high and they go against the laws of the South Africa Schools Acts,” said Mnisi.

Under the provisions of the Act: “…No learner may be refused admission to a public school on the grounds that his or her parent (a) is unable to pay or has not paid the school fees determined by the governing body…”Mnisi said most learners have been forced to drop from school because of the new rules regarding admission fees.

“This has led to many learners failing to go to school. The problem is that there is a shortage of classes because there now many students, around 1000. “We have raised our complaints with the department of education in Bojanala but we have not received

a response. Most of the parents are not working and cannot afford the admission fees,” Mnisi added. He further alleged that parents are being asked to fund the construction of new classroom blocks to accommodate the swelling number of learners.“It is compulsory for children between 7-15 years to go to school. It is wrong for the parents to fund the building of the additional classes,” Mnisi said. Pualine Mokhutle, an official at the Bojanala Department of Education told Leseding News that the issue is being dealt with by the North West Department of Education.

“You email is forwarded to Mr B Setswambung and Mr B Mmolotsi Mokhutle (from the North West Department of Education),” wrote Mokhutle, in her response to an enquiry by Leseding News.

The North West Department of Health has cited cable theft as one of the reasons why the New Tlhabane Community Health Center has not yet opened its doors to the public.

In the 29 January, 2014 edition of Leseding News, we revealed how Tlhabane community members were unhappy with the delay in the opening of the

health facility. Allegations of shoddy workmanship and infrastructural defects were also cited by insiders and leaders of civic society movements as being one of the reasons why the center cannot open its doors to the public. Initially expected to be completed before the start of 2010 Fifa World Cup, the new facility is not yet

operating. This development that has not gone down well with residents living in the area and the nurses working in the old, congested clinic next to where the new center is being built. Explaining the delay in the construction process, the North West Department of Health cited the theft of electricity cables as one of the reasons.

The Department also added that the company initially contracted to oversee the construction process ran out of funds. “The North West Department of Health acknowledges the challenges that were faced in the construction of Tlhabane Community Health Center,” the Department said in a statement. “However, it is important to equally state that efforts have been made to resolve the challenges and have the project completed.”“It (the project) was initiated as a turnkey project, however, the initial contractor ran out of funds, was declared insolvent, sequestrated and blacklisted. “This is the main reason why the project stalled because doing away with the initial contractor meant a lot of delays and legal implications that needed to be followed. “A number of other challenges like theft of electrical cables contributed to the project delay,” the Department added. The Department of Public Works Roads and Transport has since appointed a new contractor to complete the project. “The new contractor is on site and work has begun to finalize outstanding work. The envisaged completion of the project is May

2014,” the Department of Health statement concluded.

A visit by Leseding News to the construction site of the new health center confirmed that work towards the completion of the facility was in progress. Site supervisor Alfred Phango and his team of workers were busy working on the floor and the roof of the main building.

Tlhabane Community Policing Forum (CPF) is concerned that a North West MMC’s property is being used as a hideout for criminal activities.House number 3 Spriut Street in Rustenburg North belongs to the Member of Mayoral Committee (MMC), Dodo Baloyi. Baloyi is the MMC for Agriculture and Rural Development.Following the discovery of stolen goods on the property, Easy Maimane, chairperson of the CPF, told Leseding News on Monday that the house is a “cause for concern” and is hindering the forum’s fight against criminal activities in the suburb.

To Abdul, a ward councilor in the area, the house is a headache. “I don’t sleep because of this house,” a visibly frustrated Abdul told Leseding News.Gomolemo Seleka, a caretaker, said he tried to talk to Baloyi to evict the foreigners occupying the property but all he has received are “empty promises”. “He keeps promising but nothing happens,” Seleka said. In the latest incident that came to the attention of Leseding News, properties belonging to Rebecca Van Wyk of Karlien Park were found hidden at the house.

This was after her son broke into her bedroom before stealing R22 000, a television set and a DVD player. The incident, which occurred on 31 January at around 03h00, has been confirmed by the police. “They go around stealing things that they exchange for drugs. We are very concerned because the drugs are being sold by people who mill around the MMC’s house,” said Van Wyk. The property has 20 rooms, mostly occupied by foreign nationals. The rental ranges from R1 000 to R1 500. Our editor, Levy Mokwele – who is also a resident of Rustenburg North – paid Baloyi’s house a visit and this is what he discovered:

If you happen to have taken a walk along Thabo Mbeki Street on 14 February (Valentine’s Day) then you might have noticed a tall man, dressed in a white suite, white shoes and wearing a “bunny hat”.This person was shouting “Happy Valentine’s Day!” and other humorous chants to anyone dressed in red and black.

Occasionally, he would pose for a picture with anyone who so wished before continuing with his funny routine. People who know this man are now accustomed to his antiques each year on Valentine’s Day. For Christo Mpanza (27), dressing up on Valentine’s Day and entertaining virtually everyone he comes into contact with has become a very important occasion since 2009. “I started dressing up for Valentine’s Day four years ago. I enjoy it because I make people laugh and it makes me feel good about myself,” Christo told Leseding News. “Valentine’s Day is a day of love and we must celebrate it. It is a day for lovers. If I can make people enjoy the day, then I will also feel good about myself.”

Christo cannot complete his statement as he has to attend to one of the many customers that regularly visit his shop along Thabo Mbeki Street. His shop is stocked with apples, bananas, biscuits, sweets, cigarettes and many other wares. Christo said he started operating his stall two years ago. “This is how I earn my money to put food on the table,” he said. “The money I realize from my work helps me to earn a living and send my son, who is in Grade R to school…”He is forced to stop again to serve another customer who wants to buy fruit. It is clear that Christo has struck a chord of understanding with his regular customers, who all come from various backgrounds. “You have to be friendly to everyone. This is important in life and in my line of business. When my customers are happy, then I am also happy,” he chuckled.Christo travels to the Rustenburg Central Business District every day from Boitekong, where he lives.

PLATINUM PEOPLE

Born on October 13 1985 in the Ledig Village of the North West, Molebogeng Thekiso – better known as Melebza de’Dj – is a multi-talented artist. A DJ, entertainer, entrepreneur, MC and motivational speaker, Malebogeng developed a keen interest in the entertainment industry at the age of 10. Soon after completing her matric in 2003, she followed her dreams and went on to study TV and Radio Broadcasting at Damelin College before undergoing further training at the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC). She developed an amazing love for spinning the discs and decided to go for lessons. In 2007, she eventually fulfilled a huge part of her dreams by becoming a “Disc Jockey”. She also wrote her own piece of history by becoming the first female resident Dj at the Siyangcoba NGO, which takes care of disadvantaged children from Zandspruit. Her manager, Jabulani Dhladhla, said she did not seek any payments for her services. “As another token of giving back to the community, she played for free at their thanks giving events, birthday and Christmas parties and so forth.“As time progressed, she got another opportunity to become one of the resident Dj’s who played at one of the clubs in Kempton Park, and that’s where she was spotted by one of the Kwaito stars in South Africa, Brickz “Mabrigado”,” Dhladhla explained.“She then got invited by him to come and play at a gig in Lehurutshe Stadium. She went there, she played and made the crowd dance like crazy. From then, she started playing for Brickz at his gigs,” he said. In 2010, she moved back to the North-West to pursue her trade. This was largely due to numerous requests by her fans, who had already got used to her entertaining displays at night clubs, parties and college and corporate events. More exciting opportunities came through in 2013. She co-hosted an Afternoon Drive Time Show on Radio Mafisa, and also appeared on Soweto TV, on a music show called Street Radio. Malebza de’Dj is determined to be counted amongst South Africa’s top lady Dj’s and is determined to achieve this dream. It is also her dream to impart some of her knowledge and

experience to the upcoming DJs in Rustenburg and surrounding areas. Among one of her ambitions, is to be involved in the second edition of the Rustenburg Music and Lifestyle Festival, which is expected to be held sometime this year. The festival – which the Rustenburg municipality will become a major feature on the city’s arts and entertainment calendar – brings together established and upcoming artists for a three-day fest of musical celebration. Molebogeng will be eager to showcase her skills in the “Battle of the DJs” event of the festival, which last year included the likes of Phat K, Liquideep, DJ Nation, Ralf Gum and HHP.

Sirovha’s book seeks to transform lives

Tidimalo’s inaugural book a must read

The Municipal Manager of the Bojanala Platinum District Municipality, Innocent Sirovha, gave a motivational talk at Iteko Special School in which he urged teachers, students, guests and other members of the community never to give up on their dreams – even if they are facing seemingly insurmountable obstacles. The talk, held on 12 February, was supported by Standard Bank with the intention of inspiring people to realise their goals through hard work, dedication and a spirit of perseverance. Drawing from his life experiences, which are captured in the book Forging Ahead - Principles of Success, Sirovha narrated how he managed to overcome the overwhelming challenges he faced while growing up in Limpopo.Sirovha said true fulfilment comes in helping others, especially the needy and less fortunate.“Some of us do not deserve to be where we are today. I was written off like a car that was

badly damaged in an accident,” Sriovha said, explaining how he had to repeat Grade 12 on two occasions before eventually passing.“Never allow the opinion of someone to determine your life. Do not worry about a person who does not like you, show that person love and smile at him,” he explained.“I also encourage you to feed the hungry, support the needy and the weak so that you will be able to make a difference in someone’s life.” Sirovha said he is motivated by some of the life changing experiences of the people he has touched, through his book. “One lady came to me and said she was about to commit suicide just before she decided to read my book. She read the book and she decided not to take her life. “These are some of the stories that inspire me. I am emotional and I cry when I am told of such stories. As long as I touch and change the life of one person, then I will be happy. “In life we all need people who motivate us to reach or goals and objectives,” he added. Sirovha advised people aspiring to reach their goals to make use of their time by being

productive and to associate with the kind of people who will assist them to achieve their objectives in life.He explained that while the process of turning around one’s situation can be very painful, one has to have an aggressive attitude and never give up.“There has to be pain for you to turn around your situation. The way to success is very painful. Life remembers people who are willing to take some risks to achieve what they are aiming for,” he said. He added, “You must learn to associate yourself with people who will add value to the dream that you have. It is also important to manage your time wisely. “Do not be comfortable with where you are, always aim to go higher,” he concluded. Forging Ahead - Principles of Success has been described by Professor Thornhill as “a one of a kind book in motivational literature” which is “recommended for readers of all ages looking for support in facing life’s daily challenges.” The book is available at a price of R150 at local bookstores.

Tidimalo Manyaapelo’s debut novel – A Bus Ride Home: A Journey of Women, of Friends, of Relationships – was launched in Mafikeng on 18 February. The book is about a seemingly lost young romance that is reignited in adulthood. This sets Tlotlego, the protagonist, on a long, reflective journey. The setting of the novel is a bus in Lesotho, where the protagonist is travelling to take part in a three-day walk she hopes will help her reflect on her life. According to Tidimalo, the release of the book is timeous, given that February is generally regarded as the month of love. The book is an intriguing read that generally addresses issues of love, relationships and marriage. These themes are brought out through the story of Tlotlego and her three friends – Kgopolo (whose divorce forces her to downgrade her lifestyle), Amantle (who is nursing an ungrateful, HIV positive husband) and Pelontle (an eccentric and adventurous soul with a fear of marriage). While the book does not place itself as an inspirational or motivational book, it is definitely a must read for both men and women, regardless of their age. The story of the four women is a story of every woman, regardless of where in the world they may be or what their status may be. It is a story of love and relationships that transcends social status. For more information on the book, you can call Td Concepts at 018 3816712/ 082 950 1940 or send an e-mail to [email protected] in Driefontein, Tidimalo’s storytelling and love for drama began after her role as Judas Iscariot in a church drama. She started experimenting by re-writing stage

dramas that she had watched and performing them with her peers at her church. She then started creating her own scripts. After her first acting role in radio, she wrote drama for Radio Mmabatho and later for Motsweding FM. She has also written educational programmes for SABC Radio. She also worked as a reporter for North-West Mirror, where she had her own column – Think about it. Tidimalo later joined the Mafikeng Local Municipality where she produced both the internal and external publications. As manager for external communications for the North-West Department of Health, she produced an external newsletter, Boitekanelo, and during that time she used to be a guest writer for Lucky Mazibuko’s ‘Just Call Me Lucky’ column, which was published in the Sowetan.

SPORTSPORTPrimary schools from across South Africa are being urged to register for the 2014 Danone Nations Cup tournament, which will start in April this year. The tournament, which is the biggest youth football competition in the world, is open to u/12 teams. The South African leg of this worldwide competition will start in April and schools have until 27 March to get their entries in.The competition is organised with the support of the South African Schools Football Association (SASFA) with games starting at cluster level. The winners will progress to the regional finals of the tournament, culminating in the nine provincial winners playing in the National finals to determine the winners. With winning the tournament comes the honour of representing South Africa at the Danone Nations Cup World Finals in Brazil later this year, together with 31 other champion schools from across the world.Last year’s world finals were held in London

with Mpumalanga’s Daniye Primary School representing South Africa. This year, the school will also be among one of the competing teams. Speaking about his team’s experiences in London, Yenzani Ernest Mabunda, the principal of Daniye said, “They gained a lot of confidence. They came back as different people. The attention they received made them feel that they matter and that they are important too.” One of the members of the team, Njombo Aden Mabunda, said he will never forget about his experiences. “We learned a lot. We got to learn about healthy eating and after we met all these countries we went back to school and started asking our teachers to teach about them. “So we learned during the trip and even after the trip,” he said. For their achievements, Daniye was named the 2013 Developing School of The Year at the SA Sports Awards and Mabuna said it was a huge honour to be recognised in that way.
