    Introduction

    By

    C. R. Follett

This publication covers a part cf the East Texas oil field and adjacentarea in the northwestern part of Rusk County, and is supplemental t . ?nethat was released for the entire county by the Texas Board ef Water Engineerson September 25, 1937. It contains records of 161 wells., drillers' logs of81 wells, and results . f chemical analyses of water from 121 wells in RuskCounty, Texas"

It also includes a map, showing the location of the wells, each wellbeing given a number on the map corresponding ti the number assigned tcit in the records. A part ef the records are c.pied fr in the 1937 publica-tion but iiiost of them were collected during 1941 and 1942. Th3field work■was done in connection with a state-wide program of ground-water investi-gations in Texas conducted by the State Board of Water Engineers in coopera-tion i«ith the United States Department of the Interior, Geological Survey.

The water analyses were made by W. W. Hastings, Chemist of the Qualitycf Water Division of the Federal Geological Survey, and by chemists employedby the Work Projects Administration under the supervision of Mr^ Hastings, and Dr. E. P. Schcch, Director cf the Bureau cf Industrial Chemistry of TheUniversity of Texas. The results cf the analyses, which relate only tothe mineral constituents in the water, and net t- its sanitary character, are tabulated in parts per million on pages 46 t- 55, For the convenience;vf those who prefer a different ferm of expression the analyses of 19samples are given in milligram equivalents per liter en page 56.

The records serve as a guide t: land owners, officials of industrialplants, well drillers and others who need information regarding wells, thodepth to ground water in different parts of the county, and the quantityand chemical character of water yielded by the wells.

A limitednumber -f copies of this release ar:; available for freedistribution. They may be obtained by addressing a ronuest to Mr- C. SClark, Chairman, Texas State Board of Water Engineers, 302 West 15thStreet, Mstin, Texas.
