PART 2: RUSSIAN ALPHABET AND SOUNDS.

The Russian alphabet doesn’t use Latin letters as the English alphabet. It uses Cyrillic letters and that’s why it

is called Cyrillic alphabet. There are 26 letters in our alphabet. But the Russian alphabet has 33 letters.

PART 3: RUSSIA ON THE MAP.

Russia is the largest country in the world. It stretches from Eastern Europe through Northern Asia. About ¼ of

Russia is located in Europe and the rest is in Asia. The capital of Russia is Moscow. Another famous city (2nd

largest) in Russia is called Saint Petersburg. The colors of the Russian flag are: white, blue and red from the

top.

2. FACTS ABOUT RUSSIA

Russia stretches from Eastern Europe through Northern Asia.

Russia is the largest country in the world.

About ¼ of Russia is in Europe, the rest is in Asia.

Russia is almost twice as big as the United States of America.

Moscow is the capital of Russia.

Moscow is in the European part of Russia.

Moscow is the biggest city in Russia and Europe with the population of over 11 million people.

The second largest city is Saint Petersburg.

The Russian flag has three horizontal stripes: (from top) white, blue and red.

The ruble is the currency of the Russian Federation.

The Ural mountains separate the European and Asian parts of Russia

The most popular Russian souvenirs are: samovar, balalaika, Matryoshka, Icons, ushanka, Faberge eggs.

PART 4: COGNATES.

Russian cognates are words that sound similar to English words and their meaning can be guessed.

Since Russian uses a Cyrillic alphabet you need to sound a word out in order to hear it to guess what it means.

For example: парк in Russian is in English park
