SCHOOL CANTEEN
The school is changing day by day with our building works well
under way. On the weekend a temporary canteen was craned
into the quad. It will be two weeks before it is ready for use.
Canteen operations continue as usual.
A big thanks to our canteen staff, volunteers and P&C for all
their efforts in managing the move. We certainly look forward
to a new canteen being built for our school.
DEBATING
Thank you to everyone who was involved in the ice-cream day
yesterday, especially Mrs Clarkson. It was a big success and
will certainly help our debating team with costs to attend the
state championships.
WELCOME BACK MR BROWN
Next Monday we welcome Mr Brown back following his leave. I
have enjoyed filling in for him and I know the children will be
happy to see him back. Mrs Debbie Ross

HAVE YOUR SAY ON DIABETES IN SCHOOLS
Diabetes Australia is currently leading consultation to develop a
national program to better support kids with type 1 diabetes in
schools.
The new nationally consistent training program for teachers and
school staff will be targeted at every school with a student with
type 1 diabetes and this will cover the safe administration of
insulin, hypoglycemia (low blood glucose level) management,
and ‘normalising’ diabetes in schools so the students are not
stigmatised.
The program will also clarify the legal framework for diabetes
management in schools and resolve any confusion over who
can train school staff, and which school staff should be trained.
To ensure the new program meets the needs of schools,
students and parents, and builds on all the good work already
happening, we want to hear from you about what works and
what needs to be improved.
Please take five minutes to complete a survey.

NATIONAL ABORIGINAL AND TORRES STRAIT ISLANDER HEALTH SURVEY What's your health story? Tell us by taking part in the National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Survey (NATSIHS) - Interviewers from the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) are now knocking
on doors in your area, so make your story heard!
The NATSIHS collects information about the health status of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. We will ask you a range of questions face-to-face about your health and lifestyle, such as:
• visits to doctors, nurses or Aboriginal health workers • health conditions • medications • smoking • exercise
• what you eat and drink
You will have the opportunity to take part in a voluntary
hearing test and have some physical measurements taken, if
you agree (height, weight, waist and blood pressure).
For general enquiries, visit the ABS website at www.abs.gov.au/surveyinfo

This week we congratulate the whole of the Rutherford School Concert Band on
their amazing win at Bandfest 2018!
Well done all band members!
Students from our band competed in Bandfest at Lake Macquarie Performing Arts
Centre on Tuesday. Under the direction of Howard Ward the band performed three
songs to an excellent standard!
Parents and teachers alike were so proud of their performance and the adjudicator
agreed, awarding them first place in their category out of seven bands!
Thank you to all the parents who transported children to and from the event, we
know it is an experience they won’t forget!

2018 PaTCH Parents as Teacher and Community Helpers
Congratulations and a huge thanks to Belle Cedron, Sara Diamond and Sheree Clark (as well as our
little helper Olivia Clark) for your participation, and dedication to our students and teachers. Well
done.
Belle, Sara and Sheree shared in a term-long course on ways in which children first begin to learn
literacy and numeracy skills, and the ways that we can support them at home and when they come
to school. These dedicated parents came to hands-on workshops every fortnight and volunteered in
classrooms to assist students and teachers. Olivia helped by showing us what she knows about
numbers and counting, and how we can support students with their learning.
Sara, Belle and Sheree left the following comments:
“Thanks to PaTCH I’ve not only become more confident in the classroom but I feel more confident
going into the next stage of my life and pursuing a career in educational support!”
“I’m so happy that I decided to come to PaTCH. I learned a lot of new things or strategies to teach
children at home or at school. It was a great and fun learning experience.”
“Thank you so much for all that you have taught us. I hope this program continues to help others
willing to support our lovely teachers and kids. PaTCH is such a great program. It has given me all
the tools I need in being a parent volunteer, not just in my child’s class but in any class. I also liked
that I was able to bring my four year old daughter with me. PaTCH has been a great experience for
her as well when she joined in the games and learnt during the lessons we had.”
Mrs Foley hopes to run PaTCH again next year, so please let her know if you’re interested.

Class of the Week: KT
KT had a wonderful time visiting the newborn lambs last term at the high school. Mr O'Leary taught us how
the mother sheep identify their young and why the sheep have shortened tails.
Back at school, KT wrote some fantastic recounts about our visit and enjoyed sharing them with each other.
We thank Mr O'Leary and his student helpers for taking us around the farm!

Welcome back to a very busy Term 4. We are already into Week 3. Thank you to all the grandparents that visited the
classrooms on Grandparent’s Day. All of the children and teachers loved having you in their classrooms.
3A did an amazing job with their performance last Friday. Unfortunately this will be the last Stage Assembly for the year. Week
4 is the Colour Run and then, due to our building progress, we will no longer have a hall to run the assemblies in. Teachers will
present their fortnightly awards in classes every second Friday.
The end-of-year Stage 2 party will be held at Strike Bowling on Friday 14th December. Notes have been sent home, allowing
plenty of time to return notes and money to your class teacher. This is to celebrate finishing Year 3 or 4.
Class of the Week: 3T
On Thursday 25th October, 3T were extremely lucky to have
Mrs Patel come and cook some Indian food with us. We
prepared and cooked some chickpea curry and Indian pouri.
The class rated our experience and awarded Mrs Patel a 10/10
for her hard work and culinary skills. She also prepared puff,
an Indian pastry with potato filling.
Some of our class thought it was a little spicy, but overall the
food was very delicious. We loved having Mrs Patel come and
cook for us.

NEWCASTLE PERMANENT MATHS TEST
A massive congratulations to Ajay Thomas and Shreyash Karajagar who have received a District Award in the Year 6 Division of
the Newcastle Permanent Maths Test. To receive this award they have placed within the top students receiving a High

receive their award.
Drew Fullerton has also received a District Award in the Year 5 Division of the Newcastle Permanent Maths Test and will also
attend the special awards ceremony to officially collect his award.
Congratulations to all students on these fine results.
DEBATING
Massive congratulations go to our debaters who beat Booragul Public School's team, to be named regional champions in the
Premier's Debating Challenge! Out of 874 teams who entered the challenge this year, Rutherford Shields are one of the
remaining ten who now go on to compete in a three-day knockout tournament to decide State Champions for 2018! They are
looking forward to honing their skills and participating in a variety of other exciting activities at The Tops Conference Centre in
Stanwell Tops from 18 - 21 November 2018.
We wish them the best of luck!

complimented by the program coordinators on their maturity during these lessons. We hope that all students have gained

GREAT AUSSIE BUSH CAMP
Thank you and well done to Year 5 for returning camp notes so quickly. Don't forget, final payments are now overdue and need
to be paid to the office as soon as possible.
We have just over 100 campers going to Great Aussie Bush Camp in Week 5, and unfortunately our rooms/tents are full, so we
are unable to take any more students. A “reserves” list has now been formed.
If you need another note about Dietary Requirements, Camp Rules, List of Things to Pack or Souvenir List please see Mrs
Evans or Mrs Lupton.
YEAR 6 FUNDRAISER
Year 6 students will be teaming up with McHappy Day coordinators to sell bouncy balls and pens to support the work that the
Ronald McDonald House does for families of sick children. $1 from each item sold will be returned to the school and will assist
Year 6 with their end-of-year fundraising. Bouncy balls and pens will be on sale on Monday 12th November during lunch time
for both infants and primary school. Representatives from the Ronald McDonald House will be on site to assist with the selling
of these items. In the event that your child is away or forgets their money, a small collection of bouncy balls and pens will be left
at school to be sold on Tuesday.

Canberra and Snow Camp has been booked for 2019. The dates will be August 27th – 30th at this stage. We will spend one day

be between $480 - $500 per student (similar to 2018). In the coming weeks, parents of our Year 5 students can start making
payments towards the excursion if they wish, to make it a little easier to afford over a longer period.

Public School
Colour Run
This year, one of our major fundraising goals is to raise money for playground equipment and
basketball/netball courts on completion of our new build.
The Colour Run will promote health and happiness whilst raising money for the benefit of our
students. It will be an exciting and fun-filled event for the whole school community.
P-K Little Dragons and their families, as well as Rutherford Public School students, parents and
siblings (under primary school-age) are invited to join us!
The day will involve students running or walking laps of the oval whilst having brightly-coloured, non-
toxic, holi powder thrown at them. We can't wait to see Rutherford Public School in COLOUR! Be
sure to wear old clothes, preferably WHITE!
The canteen will be open for cold cans of drinks, ice-blocks, lollies and chips!
We are expecting the day to begin around 1:30pm. We will provide more details and a firm start time
closer to the event. The day will conclude at the end of our school day. Students will not return to
class when they have completed their run.
Entry fee is $10 per person. There will be no sponsorship collections required this year. Entry fees
will be the main fundraiser.
Entry forms will be sent home soon with more information. Stay tuned…..
