Break-inThere is never a more important period in the life of yourengine than the period between 0 and 500 km (300 mi).For this reason, you should read the following materialcarefully.Since the engine is brand new, do not put an excessiveload on it for the first 500 km (300 mi). The various partsin the engine wear and polish themselves to the correctoperating clearances. During this period, prolonged full-throttle operation or any condition that might result inengine overheating must be avoided.

Operating your snowmobile for the first timeStart the engine and let it idle for 15 minutes.

0–160 km (0–100 mi)Avoid prolonged operation above 6,000 r/min.

Riding your snowmobile

Getting to know your snowmobileA snowmobile is a rider active vehicle, andyour riding position and your balance arethe two basic factors of maneuvering yoursnowmobile.Riding your snowmobile requires skillsacquired through practice over a period oftime. Take the time to learn the basic tech-niques well before attempting more difficultmaneuvers.Riding your new snowmobile can be a veryenjoyable activity, providing you with hoursof pleasure. However, it is essential tofamiliarize yourself with the operation ofthe snowmobile to achieve the skill neces-sary to enjoy riding safely. Before operatingthe snowmobile, read this Owner’s Manualcompletely and understand the operationof the controls. Pay particular attention to the safety infor-mation on pages 3-1–3-3. Please read allwarning and caution labels on your snow-mobile. Also, read the Snowmobiler’sSafety Handbook that is supplied with yoursnowmobile.

Learning to ride your snowmobile Before you ride, always perform the pre-operation checks listed on pages 8-1–8-4.The short time spent checking the condi-tion of the snowmobile will be rewardedwith added safety and a more reliablesnowmobile. Always wear the proper cloth-ing for both warmth and to help protect youfrom injury if an accident occurs.Become familiar with operating your snow-mobile at low speeds, even if you are anexperienced rider. Do not attempt to oper-ate at maximum performance until you are

7-

totally familiar with the snowmobile’s han-dling and performance characteristics.

Set the parking brake and follow theinstructions on pages 7-1–7-2 to start theengine. Once the engine has warmed up,you are ready to begin riding your snow-mobile.

To start out and accelerate1. With the engine idling, release the

parking brake. 2. Apply the throttle slowly and smoothly.

The V-belt clutch will engage and youwill start to accelerate.

WARNING@

The operator should always keep bothhands on the handlebar. Never put yourfeet outside the running boards. Avoidhigh speeds until you have becomethoroughly familiar with your snowmo-bile and all of its controls. @

BrakingWhen slowing down or stopping, releasethe throttle and apply the brake gently—notsuddenly.

WARNING@

Many surfaces such as ice and hard-packed snow require much longerstopping distances. Be alert, planahead, and begin decelerating early.

Improper use of the brake can causethe drive track to lose traction, reduce control, and increase thepossibility of an accident.

E_8fp.book Page 4 Tuesday, March 28, 2006 4:35 PM

Turning

For most snow surfaces, “body English” isthe key to turning. As you approach a curve, slow down andbegin to turn the handlebar in the desireddirection. As you do so, put your weight onthe running board to the inside of the turnand lean your upper body into the turn. This procedure should be practiced at lowspeeds many times, in a large flat areawith no obstacles. Once you have learnedthis technique, you should be able to per-form it at higher speeds or in tightercurves. Lean more as the turn getssharper or is made at higher speeds.Improper riding techniques such as abruptthrottle changes, excessive braking, incor-rect body movements, or too much speedfor the sharpness of the turn may causethe snowmobile to tip.If your snowmobile begins to tip while turn-ing, lean more into the turn to regain bal-ance. If necessary, gradually let off on thethrottle or steer to the outside of the turn.Remember: Avoid higher speeds until you are thor-oughly familiar with the operation of yoursnowmobile.

7-

Riding uphill

You should practice first on gentle slopes.Try more difficult climbs only after you havedeveloped your skill. As you approach ahill, accelerate before you start the climb, and then reduce the throttle to preventtrack slippage. It is also important to keepyour weight on the uphill side at all times. On climbs straight up the hill, this can beaccomplished by leaning forward and, onsteeper inclines, standing on the runningboards and leaning forward over the han-dlebar. (Also see “Traversing a slope.”)Slow down as you reach the crest of thehill, and be prepared to react to obstacles, sharp drops, or other vehicles or peoplewhich may be on the other side. If you areunable to continue up a hill, do not spin thetrack. Stop the engine and set the parkingbrake. Then pull the rear of the snowmo-bile around to point the snowmobile backdown the hill. When the snowmobile ispointed downhill, mount your snowmobilefrom the uphill side. Restart the engine, release the parking brake, and descendthe hill.

WARNING@

Side hills and steep slopes are not rec-ommended for a novice snowmobiler. @

4

Page 49: RX10RTRW RX10MW RX10MSW RXW10W - Yamaha …€¦ · owner’s manual snowmobile rx10rw rx10rtrw rx10mw rx10msw rxw10w lit-12628-02-53 8fp-28199-12 printed on recycled paper printed

E_8fp.book Page 5 Tuesday, March 28, 2006 4:35 PM

Riding downhill

When riding downhill, keep speed to a min-imum. It is important to apply just enoughthrottle to keep the clutch engaged whiledescending the hill. This will allow you touse engine compression to help slow thesnowmobile, and to keep the snowmobilefrom rolling freely down the hill. Also applythe brake frequently, with light pressure.

WARNING@

Use extra caution when applying thebrake during a descent. Excessivebraking will cause the drive track tolock, causing a loss of control. @

Traversing a slope

WARNING@

Traversing slopes is not recommendedfor a novice snowmobiler. @

Traversing a slope requires you to properlyposition your weight to maintain proper bal-ance. As you travel across the slope, leanyour body to position your weight towardsthe uphill side. A recommended ridingposition is to kneel with the knee of your

7-

downhill leg on the seat and the foot ofyour uphill leg on the running board. Thisposition will make it easier for you to shiftyour body weight as needed.Snow and ice are slippery, so be preparedfor the possibility that your snowmobilecould begin to slip sideways on the slope. Ifthis happens, steer in the direction of theslide if there are no obstacles in your path.As you regain proper balance, graduallysteer again in the direction you wish totravel. If your snowmobile starts to tip, steer downthe hill to regain balance.

WARNING@

If you are unable to maintain correctbalance, and your snowmobile is goingto tip over, dismount your snowmobileimmediately on the uphill side. @

Ice or icy surfaceOperating on ice or icy surfaces can bevery dangerous. Traction for turning, stop-ping, and starting is much less than that onsnow.

WARNING@

When you have to operate on ice or icysurfaces, drive slowly and cautiously.Avoid accelerating, turning, and brakingrapidly. Steering is minimal and uncon-trolled spins are an ever-present dan-ger. @

E_8fp.book Page 6 Tuesday, March 28, 2006 4:35 PM

Hard-packed snowIt can be more difficult to negotiate onhard-packed snow as both the skis anddrive track do not have as much traction aswhen the snowmobile is operated on freshsnow. Avoid rapid acceleration, turning, and braking.Operation on surfaces other thansnow or iceOperation of your snowmobile on surfacesother than snow or ice should be avoided.Operation under such conditions will dam-age or result in rapid wear of the ski run-ners, drive track, slide runners, and drivesprockets. Operation of the snowmobile onthe following surfaces should be avoided atall times:1. Dirt 2. Sand 3. Rocks 4. Grass 5. Bare pavement

Other surfaces that should be avoided forthe sake of drive track and slide runner lifeare:1. Glare ice surfaces 2. Snow mixed with a lot of dirt and sand

All of the above surfaces have one thing incommon in regard to drive track and sliderunners; little or no lubricating ability. Drivetrack and all slide rail systems requirelubrication (snow or water) between theslide runners and the slide metal. In theabsence of lubrication, the slide runnerswill rapidly wear and in severe cases, liter-ally melt away, and the drive track will besubject to damage or failure. Also traction aids such as studs, cleats, etc., may cause further track damage orfailure.

7-

WARNING@

Drive track damage or failure couldresult in loss of braking ability andsnowmobile control, which could causean accident. Always check the drive track for

damage or maladjustment beforeoperating the snowmobile.

Do not operate the snowmobile ifyou find damage to the drive track.

@

CAUTION:@

Ride on fresh snow frequently. Operat-ing on ice or hard-packed snow will rap-idly wear the slide runners. @

Maximizing drive track lifeRecommendations

Track tensionDuring initial break-in, the new drive track will tend tostretch quickly as the track settles. Be sure to correct thetrack tension and alignment frequently. (See pages8-32–8-34 for adjustment procedures.) A loose track canslip (ratchet), derail or catch on suspension parts caus-ing severe damage. Do not overtighten the drive track, otherwise it may increase the friction between the trackand the slide runners, resulting in the rapid wear of bothcomponents. Also, this may put an excessive load on thesuspension components, resulting in component failure.

Marginal snowThe drive track and the slide runners are lubricated andcooled by snow and water. To prevent the drive track andslide runners from overheating, avoid sustained high-speed usage in areas such as icy trails, frozen lakes andrivers that have minimal snow coverage. An overheatedtrack will be weakened internally, which may cause fail-ure or damage.

Off-trail ridingAvoid off-trail riding until there is sufficient snow cover-age. It generally takes several feet of snow to provide agood overall base to properly cover debris, such asrocks, logs, etc. If snow coverage is not sufficient, stay ontrails to avoid impact damage to the drive track.

Studded trackIn general, track life will be shortened when studs areinstalled. Drilling stud holes into the drive track will cutthe internal fibers, which weakens the track. Avoid spin-ning the drive track. Studs may catch on an object andpull out of the track, leaving tears and damage aroundthe already weakened area. To minimize possible dam-age, consult your stud manufacturer for installation andstud pattern recommendations. Yamaha does not recommend track studding.

Checking the spark plugsThe spark plug is an important engine component and iseasy to inspect. The condition of the spark plug can indi-cate the condition of the engine. Check the coloration onthe white porcelain insulator around the center electrode. The ideal coloration at this point is a medium to a lighttan color for a snowmobile that is being ridden normally. If a spark plug shows a distinctly different color, therecould be something wrong with the engine. For example,a very white center electrode porcelain color could indi-cate an intake track air leak or carburetion problem forthat cylinder. Do not attempt to diagnose such problemsyourself. Instead, take the snowmobile to a Yamahadealer for inspection and possible repairs. You shouldperiodically remove and inspect the spark plug becauseheat and deposits will cause a spark plug to slowly breakdown and erode. Consult a Yamaha dealer before chang-ing to a different type of spark plug.

Specified spark plug: R CR9EB (NGK)

E_8fp.book Page 8 Tuesday, March 28, 2006 4:35 PM

Spark plugs are produced in several different threadlengths. The thread length or reach is the distance fromthe spark plug gasket seat to the end of the threadedportion. If the reach is too long, overheating and enginedamage may result. If the reach is too short, spark plugfouling and poor performance may result. Also, if thereach is too short, carbon will form on the exposedthreads resulting in combustion chamber hot spots andthread damage. Always use a spark plug with the speci-fied reach.

Before installing any spark plug, measure the electrodegap with a wire thickness gauge and adjust to specifica-tion.

When installing the spark plug, always clean the gasketsurface. Wipe off any grime from the threads and tightenthe spark plug to the specified torque.

CAUTION:@

Make sure that the spark plug caps are securelyinstalled. Otherwise the spark plug caps could bedamaged due to engine vibration. @

Adjusting the high-altitude settingsOperating at high altitude reduces the performance of agasoline engine about 3% for every 305 m (1,000 ft) ofelevation. This is because there is less air as altitudeincreases. Less air means less oxygen available for com-bustion.Your snowmobile utilizes an electronic fuel injection sys-tem that delivers the optimal air/fuel ratio required by theengine. Therefore, the fuel injection system does notneed to be adjusted, even for operation at high altitude.

Remember: Less air at higher altitude means there is less horse-power available, even with the optimal air/fuel ratio.Expect acceleration and top speed to be reduced athigher altitudes.

To overcome operating with less power at high altitudes, your snowmobile may also require different settings forthe drive chain gears and V-belt clutch to avoid poor per-formance and rapid wear. If you plan to operate yoursnowmobile at an altitude different from the area whereyou bought it, be sure to consult a Yamaha dealer. Thedealer can tell you if there are any changes necessaryfor the altitude where you plan to ride.

CAUTION:@

The drive chain gears and V-belt clutch should beadjusted when operating above a high altitude of900 m (3,000 ft). Consult a Yamaha dealer. @

10-STORAGELong-term storage requires some preven-tive procedures to guard against deteriora-tion.1. Cleaning

Thoroughly clean the snowmobile, insideand out, to remove the corrosive salts andacids that can accumulate. Use YamahaMud, Grease, and Engine Cleaner, or anequivalent product, to loosen mud, grease, and grime. Wash with mild soap, then rinseand dry completely.

2. Lubrication Lubricate moving parts, suspension link-age, and pivot points. Use the grease orlubricant specified in the MAINTENANCEsection, or Yamaha Lube-Zall general-pur-pose lubricant. Proper lubrication fightscorrosion while it reduces friction.

3. Fuel system Add Yamaha Fuel Stabilizer and Condi-tioner, or an equivalent stabilizer, to thefuel tank to help prevent fuel oxidation andgum and varnish deposits, and to inhibitcorrosion in the fuel system and injectors. In areas where oxygenated fuel (gasohol)is used, consult a Yamaha dealer.

4. Engine Proper storage of the engine is essential toprevent costly rust and corrosion damageto internal engine components. This ismore important in areas where oxygenatedfuel (gasohol) is used, because the alcoholcontent in the fuel increases the chance forwater to enter the engine. Use YamahaStor-Rite Engine Fogging Oil, or an equiva-lent fogging oil, to protect both the com-bustion chamber and crankshaft fromcorrosion. An alternate method is to

remove the intake silencer and squirt oilinto the throttle bodies while the engine isrunning.

CAUTION:@

Do not attempt to store the snowmobileby simply starting the engine occasion-ally during the storage period. This cancause more harm than good! Moistureand acids form during combustionwhich can actually increase the chancefor corrosion damage during the stor-age period. @

5. Surface protection Apply a coat of wax to painted surfaces.Apply suitable protectants to the exterior ofthe engine, drive track, and to other metal, plastic, and rubber parts.

6. BatteryRemove the battery from the snowmobile.Store it in a cool, dry place that is above0 °C (32 °F), but less than 30 °C (90 °F).Check the condition of the battery once amonth, and charge it as necessary.

WARNING@

Never smoke around the batterywhile it is being charged. Sparksmay ignite the hydrogen gas createdby the battery.

Never connect the battery to or dis-connect it from the snowmobilewhile it is being charged. Sparksmay ignite the hydrogen gas createdby the battery.

Make sure that the battery terminalsare tight.

E_8fp.book Page 2 Tuesday, March 28, 2006 4:35 PM

CAUTION:@

Always keep the battery charged.Storing a discharged battery cancause permanent battery damage.

To charge a sealed-type (MF) battery,a special (constant-voltage) batterycharger is required. Using a conven-tional battery charger will damagethe battery. If you do not haveaccess to a sealed-type (MF) batterycharger, have a Yamaha dealercharge your battery.

Do not charge the battery quickly.Charge the battery for 10 hours at1.2 amperes.

@

7. Drive trackLoosen the drive track and block up thechassis so that the track is suspendedabove the ground.

8. V-belt Remove the V-belt and store separately.

9. Storage Store the snowmobile in a dry, well-venti-lated place out of direct sunlight. Put a fab-ric cover over the snowmobile, preferablyone that is designed for it. Do not use aplastic or vinyl cover—condensation couldbe trapped underneath which couldincrease the chances of rusting.

Returning to service after storageWhen returning your snowmobile to ser-vice, install the V-belt and battery andadjust the drive track. Remove the spark plugs and clean orreplace them if necessary. Perform allother pre-operation and seasonal mainte-nance checks listed in the periodic mainte-nance chart.

NOTE:@

Before installing the battery, have aYamaha dealer inspect and fully charge it. @

For peak performance, it is recommendedthat you have your snowmobile checkedand tuned by a Yamaha dealer. The dealerhas the experience and training to help youget the maximum performance and use outof your Yamaha snowmobile.
