Dr. Gretchen Allen, Ob-Gyn

Nina Soriano, RN, North 9Antonina “Nina” Soriano, 29, a reg-istered nurse who worked on North 9, died unexpectedly from a rare heart failure on Nov. 10 at Hartford Hospital.

Nina earned her bachelor’s degree in nursing in 2007 at the University of Vermont.

She has worked at Hartford Hospi-tal for the past six years as a neuro-logical trauma nurse.

Her fervent passion for life was transcended even in her death, as she gave life to others through her organ donation.

Nina had a distinct love for her family, the holidays, cooking, event planning, and traveling to her fa-vorite place - Vermont.

She was committed to changing people’s lives for the better, and she gave as much love as she was loved. She was an optimistic, fun-ny, creative, nonjudgmental, de-voutly Catholic and radiantly beau-tiful woman, inside and out.

Nina leaves her parents, her hus-band, Dr. Jose A. Soriano, her daugh-ters Cecelia and Magdalena, her sister Rebecca Marsie and brother Matthew Marsie, her grandparents and in-laws.

Friends and colleagues at Hartford Hospital attended a memorial ser-vice for her on Friday in the Multi-faith Chapel. Nina was buried Sat-urday in New London.

Dr. Gretchen Allen (OB/GYN) passed away Nov. 11 after a heroic battle with cancer. She was 50.

Dr. Allen studied medicine at the University of Vermont and com-pleted her residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Connecticut School of Medicine. She then settled in West Hartford to practice medicine and raise her family.

She held a variety of positions at Hartford Hospital and Community Health Services.

She dedicated her life to those less fortunate and had many offers to join private practices but chose to serve those who needed it most in women’s clinics.

As a result, Hartford Hospital has created the Gretchen Allen MD Community Service Award, for out-standing patient care in under-served populations.

Dr. Allen leaves behind her daugh-ter, Rebecca; her husband, Steven Allen; her mother and father, two brothers; and a niece and three nephews. In addition, she leaves behind a legacy of caring through her wonderful friends and col-leagues, the dedicated health care professionals that studied under her and each beautiful baby that she helped deliver into this world.

Read the obituary and guest book here.

In lieu of flowers, donations may

be made to the Hartford Hospi-tal Women’s Health Program, Attn: Fund Development, 80 Seymour St., P.O. Box 5037, Hartford, CT 06102-5037.

Seeking Referrals For Holiday Baskets...Every year, the Employees’ Council col-lects holiday baskets to give to employ-ees and patients in need. If you are an employee in need of assistance, or know of a Hartford Hospital patient who is, please submit a brief paragraph to [email protected] (Employ-ee Council member) describing the cir-cumstances and how the basket would help. Include items that you would like to receive and age-specific items (e.g. adult/kids clothes, games, food items, baby items, gift cards. Please include children’s sizes and ages.) Please be specific and concise to help us provide you with the most suitable basket, and include the best way to contact you via e-mail. Please submit your written paragraph by Saturday, Nov. 30. We will keep this process confidential and as fair as possible. We cannot guaran-tee that everyone who requests a basket will receive one; it depends on the num-ber requested and the donations we re-ceive. Baskets will be available for pick-up the week of December 16.

...And Donations for Holiday Baskets If you or your workgroup would like to prepare a basket, donate individual items, or are interested in helping, please contact [email protected]. Baskets and donations will be collected until Dec. 16.
