The Hudson Street Garage is taking shape, with most of the nine floors in place. When complete, the $40 million project will have 1,200 park- ing spaces for staff. This is a net ad- dition of 1,000 spaces to campus. The structure also will house a 5,000 square foot employee fitness center, including new cardio and weight equipment plus a 1,000 square foot group exercise room. Staff members are invited to come to the new garage to sign the walls in the fitness center area on Tues- day, June 5 from 2-3 p.m. Construction is using 1,318 non- standard “3-D” shaped precast pan- els, which require unique forms built from wood. A total of 375 pan- els have been installed to date (av- eraging 18 panels per day). The project has created 150 jobs, which will last throughout the proj- ect duration. Thirty percent of those workers are Hartford residents; and 35 percent are minority or women. Security measures are important in the new construction. There will be 32 emergency “blue light” phone stations located throughout the ga- rage, and 100 cameras inside and outside the garage to provide con- stant surveillance. There will be card access control entry gates. Environmental concerns have also been important in the project. The garage will contain charging sta- tions for electric vehicles and ener- gy efficient LED light fixtures. Rain gardens will surround the building to manage all storm water, which mitigates the demand on the mu- nicipal system and helps restore natural aquifers. The garage is expected to open in January 2013. Cedar Mountain Commons Residents Enjoy “Breakfast Club”

On May 19, students from Hartford Hos-pital’s YES program completed a service project at South Marshall Street Shelter in Hartford.

They painted the shelter’s first floor, landscaped the grounds, planted vege-table gardens, and donated a lawn mow-er to the shelter. The group also raised funds to provide books and activities for the families staying at the shelter.

The YES program is a 22-week course that helps staff members take steps to-wards their personal and professional goals by developing academic and work skills, and preparing them to continue on to college.

“We are striving to play a supportive role in the community, and it is our goal to give back,” said Leticia Colon, YES program founder and educational

coordinator. “The annual service project was a great success and many hospi-tal staff came by to support the efforts bringing diapers and other needed baby items. We are very thankful for the sup-port of so many staff members.”

Last year, the YES students complet-ed a similar service project at Thirman L. Milner School in Hartford, providing landscaping and painting.

The Cedar Mountain Commons Men’s Breakfast Club hosted Mark Dixon, WFSB meteorologist, at its May meeting.

Cedar Mountain Commons, located on the Hartford Hospital Newington Cam-pus, is one of the few hospital-supported senior living communities in Connecti-cut. Residents can choose independent living or assisted living in a service-rich environment that includes housekeep-ing, maintenance, dining, 24-hour staff-ing, transportation and an extensive cal-endar of social activities.

The Men’s Breakfast Club has been meeting monthly since 2003. Partici-pants share breakfast and conversation with guest speakers, who have included officials from the town of Newington as well as many HH employees who have shared various hobbies such as coin col-lecting, photography and fishing.

“It’s always a wonderful morning,” said Debbie Labbe, activity director at Cedar Mountain Commons.
